What can I do to inherit the kingdom of God?
¿Qué puedo hacer para heredar el reino de Dios?
This is the question that navigates the Gospel of
today’s reading. In that case what is needed to be taken
into consideration is the message of the first reading wisdom. The word wisdom, “Sophia” as is translated in
the Greek language and “hochma” in Hebrew is
personified in Sacred Scripture as a divine figure that
comes from God to guide us. “I prayed says the Wisdom
of Salomon, and understanding was given to me, I called
on God, and the Spirit of God came to me”. Our tradition
teaches us that wisdom must be valued above all human
gains or possessions because it is the eternal treasure, the
fruit of prayer, deep reflection and humility. This kind of
wisdom and knowledge are the general requirement to
follow Jesus who called to us to discipleship.
Every human is called to seek that wisdom to
enter into a genuine relationship with God. The story of
the rich young man in the Gospel really is a great example
of the tension and emotion deep inside of us in our effort
to respond to Jesus’ call. My personal inclination
convinced me that this young man was a good person as
we can see he has followed and being faithful to the
commandments all his life but only one thing is missing,
faithfulness, not success. This young man has been
challenge by Jesus in his most vulnerable part of his
comfort zone: the love and his attachment to his
possessions. “Go and sell your possessions and follow me
said Jesus”. The Gospel says when the man heard Jesus
response he was sad because he valued his possessions
over Jesus call. My dear friends to be a disciple mean
everyday faithfulness not successfulness. A disciple is
called to trust God unconditionally. “We are not meant to
walk by Jesus side full of pride rather we meant to walk
full of God energy”.
We cannot confess the
overwhelming of God richness without detaching
ourselves from everything we possess. To renounce of
our wealth is not an end in itself but merely a prerequisite
for becoming a disciple of Christ.
Each one must
give up what prevents respond to this invitation: "Come
and follow me."
What does this reading mean to us? Where do we fit in
this Gospel today? We are all rich and poor alike called to
be Jesus’ disciple and to work with Him in his vineyard.
We are all men and women called to set the world on fire
with the message of love. But the crucial question for us
individually is: what it is my personal possession that I
need to sell to be free and able to make this conscientious
decision to be a faithful follower of Christ?
Esta es la pregunta que navega en la lectura del
Evangelio de hoy. En ese caso, lo que se necesita tomar en
cuenta es el mensaje de la primera lectura: la sabiduría. La
palabra de sabiduría, “Sophia” como se traduce en la lengua
griega y "Hochma" en hebreo se personifica en la Sagrada
Escritura como una figura divina que viene de Dios para
guiarnos. "Oré dice la sabiduría de Salomón, y se me dio la
comprensión, llamé a Dios, y el Espíritu de Dios vino a mí".
Nuestra tradición nos enseña que la sabiduría debe ser
valorada por encima de todas las ganancias o posesiones
humanas, ya que es el tesoro eterno, el fruto de la oración, la
reflexión profunda y la humildad. Este tipo de sabiduría y
conocimiento son los requisitos generales para seguir a Jesús,
que nos llamó al discipulado.
Cada ser humano está llamado a buscar esa sabiduría
para entrar en una relación genuina con Dios. La historia del
joven rico del Evangelio es realmente un gran ejemplo de la
tensión y la emoción profunda que hay dentro de nosotros en
nuestro esfuerzo por responder a la llamada de Jesús. Mi
inclinación personal me convenció de que este joven era una
buena persona, como podemos verlo: ha seguido fielmente los
mandamientos toda su vida, pero sólo una cosa se le faltaba,
la fidelidad y no el éxito. Este joven ha sido tocado por Jesús
en su parte más vulnerable y confortable: el amor y su apego
a sus posesiones. "Ve y vende tus posesiones y sígueme le dijo
Jesús". El Evangelio dice que cuando el hombre oyó la
respuesta de Jesús se puso triste porque valoraba sus
posesiones más que la llamada de Jesús. Mis queridos amigos
ser un discípulo requiere fidelidad cotidiana y no éxito. Un
discípulo está llamado a confiar en Dios sin condiciones. "No
estamos llamados para caminar al lado de Jesús llenos de
orgullo, sino caminar llenos de la energía de Dios". No
podemos confesar la inmensa riqueza de Dios sin apartarnos
de todo lo que poseemos. Renunciar a nuestras riquezas no es
el fin en sí mismo, sino simplemente un requisito previo para
convertirse en un discípulo de Cristo. Cada uno debe
renunciar a lo que le evita responder a esta invitación: "Ven y
sígueme".
¿Qué significa esta lectura para nosotros? ¿Dónde
encajamos en este Evangelio de hoy? Todos somos ricos y
pobres de la misma forma, llamados a ser discípulos de Jesús
y a trabajar con Él en su viña. Somos todos, hombres y
mujeres, llamados a encender en llamas el mundo con el
mensaje de amor. Pero la pregunta crucial para nosotros
individualmente es: ¿cuál es mi posesión personal y que tengo
que vender para ser libre y capaz de tomar esta consiente
decisión para ser un seguidor fiel de Cristo?

500TH ANNIVERSARY OF SAINT TERESA OF ÁVILA – EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION…
This year, along with the Holy Mother Church, the Discalced Carmelites are celebrating the 500th birth centenary of
their founders, St. Teresa of Ávila, Doctor of the Church.
Our Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito has graciously agreed to preside over the Eucharistic Celebration on October 15th,
at 6:30 p.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Parish. Pre-Mass videos and Religious Life with a Choral Presentation of “Nada Te
Turbe” begins at 6:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served following the Mass.
