It is better for you to enter into life maimed than with two hands and to go to Hell, into the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better for you to enter into life crippled than with two feet to be thrown into Hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out! Better for you to enter into the Kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes and to be thrown into Hell, where ‘the worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched!’” Mark 9:38-48 Contrary to popularly held belief, Jesus does speak repeatedly in the Gospels of what will happen to those individuals who ignore God and his law. All too, too many in recent years, have ignored Jesus’ direct and clear teaching about sin and its consequences. In two words, “Eternal Damnation!” Denial of sin and its consequences is an easy road to travel and many are traveling on this path. Jesus in this Gospel passage above greatly exaggerates his point, but he does so purposely to make it clear to his listeners what he is talking about. Sin has consequences and ultimately if left unchecked it will bring “Eternal Death” to its adherents. Moreover, we as his disciples are called to eliminate sin from our lives, to walk in holiness, to follow his footsteps and to be good. This process starts with a clear recognition that some actions and behaviors are sinful, intrinsically evil and can never be engaged in by a disciple. This is a simple message, but a message that is increasingly ignored by many, even among the so called “faithful!” Let me explain, all too, too many individuals these days when they wander into the confessional, it is somewhat surprising to me that they even wander into the confessional, but they will preface their confession with questions like, “Father, is it a sin, … ?“ Or “Father, do you think what I did was bad?” Or rationalizations like; “I just did what everyone else was doing? My general response to all this “malarkey” thrown at me by people is “Come on! What do you think? What are the Ten Commandments, or should we just ignore them!” So, many people today, and I am talking about Church goers are all too easily caught up with the general thinking of the day, which promotes the idea that “anything goes” and “nothing really matters!” . Again this philosophy of the age is all rot, but if this cancer is not examined under the light of the Gospel, many end up terminal because of it Key to walking in holiness, following in Jesus’ footsteps is clearly seeing what sin is and doing something about it, disengaging from the bad behavior and substituting for the bad behavior, substituting for the sinful behavior, acts of holiness. To become a “True Disciple” we need to follow explicitly what Jesus told us to do in the course of his ministry; “Feed the hungry, visit prisoners, etc.” Case in point, many individuals these days bring into the confessional a “problem” with internet pornography. It seems to me so, so surprising, how these computer savvy individuals seem to have no knowledge of “Firewalls” when it comes to porn. I gently, but clearly explain that the remedy for this problem remains the same as it always has, get rid of it, all of it, delete and or eliminate all pornographic videos that are on you devices, and install “Firewalls” to eliminate obtaining future porn. Key to dealing with this sin, like all sin, is by disengaging from it. Taking to heart the message of the Psalmist: I will set no wicked thing before my eyes.” So, today as a community let us soberly take to heart Jesus clear and passionate message, let us walk in holiness and strive to be saints. Sincerely, Father Paul Do I really want to be looking at this? I wish I didn’t see it in the first place.
