Make October Count
Hagan octubre significativo
October is an important month for us in the
Church, it is the month for us to stand up and to be
counted! During this month, the number of
participants will be counted at each and every Sunday
Mass in every Church in the Archdiocese including
Resurrection. And in subsequent months this “October
Count” will be used by the Archdiocese to assess the
health of its parishes, for good or for bad. It is used to
determine priest and deacon assignments as well as
future consolidations or parish closures. This past month
as a representative on the Priest Senate, I witnessed first
hand the consequences of parishes with low “October
Counts”. Three out of three parishes considered for
closure were indeed closed. Sadly, one of them was St.
Mary Magdalene Parish where I lived from 1983-85 as a
Franciscan. It was closed after a run of 100 plus years, a
tragic loss. Only 30 years ago this was vibrant and
dynamic parish, with a school, a large healthy Sunday
congregation and much more.
In the last three years we as a parish have made
some very positive progress with the number of people
attending Sunday Masses and with the number of families
using envelopes, but I know that we can become so much
more. With how densely populated our neighborhood has
become over the last eight years, there is no reason why
we cannot have an “October Count” of over 2,000! On a
given Sunday I’ll recognize many of our families seated in
the congregation and notice the conspicuous absence of
certain family members. When I ask where is “so and so”
today and I usually get the response “Sleeping In”. How
sad that some people will end up losing out on salvation,
not because they are murderers or thieves, but simply
because they are lazy or too tired to go to Church!
This month let us take to heart the message from
Saint Peter in his first letter: “Let us stay sober and alert,
with the knowledge that the devil is a lion, waiting to
destroy.” And let us MAKE THIS OCTOBER COUNT!
THIS COMING SUNDAY LET US MAKE A DETERMINED
EFFORT TO GET ALL OF OUR FAMILY MEMBERS TO
CHURCH. LET US GET EVERYONE ON BOARD WITH
REGULAR, WEEKLY MASS ATTENDANCE!

El mes de octubre es muy importante para
nosotros en la Iglesia, ¡es el mes de decir presente y
ser contados! Durante este mes, se contara todo los
participantes en toda las Misas de los domingos en
cada Iglesia de la Arquidiócesis incluyendo Resurrección. Y
en subsiguiente meses la “Cuenta de Octubre” se usara
por la Arquidiócesis para evaluar la salud de sus
parroquias, por el bien o por el mal, y de determinar las
asignaciones de los sacerdotes/diáconos, así como de
consolidaciones/clausuras de parroquias. Este mes pasado
como representante del Senado de Sacerdotes, yo fue
testigo de primera mano de lo que paso cunado una
parroquia tiene una baja cuenta en las “Cuentas de
Octubre” Tres de las Tres parroquias que fueron
consideradas para cerrar, fueron cerradas. Tristemente, la
parroquia María Magdalena donde yo vivía desde el 198385 como Franciscano después de estar abierta por más de
100 años. Una perdida trágica como solo 30 años atrás
esta era una parroquia vibrante y dinámica; con una
escuela, una congregación grande los domingos y mucho
más.
En los últimos tres años como parroquia hemos
progresado positivamente en los números de personas
asistiendo a misa los domingos, con los números de
familias usando los sobres, pero yo sé que podemos
convertiros en mucho más. Como densamente poblado
nuestra vecindad se ha convertido en estos últimos ocho
años, ¡no hay ninguna razón por la cual nosotros no
tendremos una “Cuenta de Octubre” más de 2,000! En un
dado domingo yo reconozco a muchas de nuestros
miembros de familia sentados en la congregación y notable
ausencia de ciertos miembros de familia. Y cuando yo
pregunto dónde está esta x personas hoy, usualmente la
respuesta es “Me que Durmiendo”. Es triste que algunas
personas se perderán la salvación, no porque son asesinos
o pillos, pero ¡simplemente por la razón de ser vagos o
están muy cansados para ir a la Iglesia!
Este mes vamos a tomar de corazón es mensaje
de San Pedro en su primera carta: “estemos sobrio y
alerto, con el entendimiento que el diablo es un león,
esperando a destruir.” Y ¡VAMOS A SER QUE ESTA
CUENTA DE OCTUBRE CUENTE! ¡VAMOS A
ENFORCARNOS EN ESTOS DOMINGOS QUE LLEGEN
TODOS NUESTRO MIEMBROS DE FAMILIA A MISA Y A
QUE TODOS ESTEN ASISTIENDO A MISA !

Starting this Sunday, October 4,
Francisco Ocaña III and a group of his family
and friends will be volunteering their services to
provide music for our 7:00 pm Sunday Mass. If you
recall a few years back, the Ocaña family regularly
provided the music for the 12:30 pm Mass on
Sunday, and then Paquito ended up moving to
Florida for a while and his group went South,
literally!. Paquito has a new job at this point in time
here in Chicago, and now available and willing,
with the assistance of family and friends, to take on
this new responsibility. Matthew Richert, the
parish’s professional musician will assist Paquito in
this new endeavor, providing most musical and
liturgical input for the proper celebration of Sunday
Mass. So, let us welcome Paquito Ocaña and crew
as our newest choir.

suministraba la música para la misa de las 12:30pm
los domingos y entonces Paquito se había mudado
para Florida por un tiempo y su grupo se fue hacia
el sur, literalmente. Paquito tiene un trabajo nuevo
aquí en Chicago, y desea ayudar y está disponible,
con la ayuda de su familia y amistades para tomar
