ronx native Norman Gay sat
calmly in the office of Career
Gear, an organization that provides
professional attire, mentoring and
career development aid to lowincome men.
A participant in Career Gear’s services
for more than two years, Gay was asked
to assemble with five other clients on the
morning of Tues., Jun. 17th, to receive a new
suit as a gift.
All were in for a huge surprise.
What the men didn’t realize is that several
New York Yankees players — Derek Jeter,
Jacoby Ellsbury, Alfonso Soriano, Hiroki
Kuroda and Brian Roberts — would soon
arrive to personally help outfit them with
a DKNY suit, and spend time chatting with
them.
As the players entered the room, the jaws of
the participants dropped in amazement.
So much for staying calm.
“I thought I just came in here for a suit,”
an emotional Gay would later remark. “I’m
trying to keep it together right now.”
“I was shocked when the players walked
in,” said participant Dion Thompson. “I never
even dreamed about something like this.”
The Yankees were there as part of their
annual HOPE Week initiative. Each year
since 2009, the team dedicates an entire week
to performing community outreach, and
assisting families or organizations worthy of
recognition or support.

This year, the team selected Career Gear,
which has assisted more than 40,000 men
since 1999, as one of the honorees.
“All of the men we work with are living at
or below poverty,” said Gary Field, Executive
Director and Founder of Career Gear. Many
are rebounding from drug addiction or
incarceration, and most are unemployed when
they first connect with the Manhattan-based
firm.

Field said the goal is to make the men selfsufficient, so they can eventually become role

as opposed to a handout,” said Career Gear
participant Rodney Whaley.
“It’s bettered me personally, professionally
and socially.”
“For many of the guys who come in here,
they’re wearing a suit for the first time,” said
Field.
“It builds their self esteem — you can see it
on their faces.”
Yankees captain Jeter agreed.
“You have better clothes on, you feel good
about yourself,” he said. “This is something
that can be life-changing.”
Field said that getting a suit is just the first
step — his organization helps with resume
writing and interview tips so clients can
enter the workforce. Through weekly peer
workshops and mentoring sessions, they build
the confidence to continue their personal
development.

hroughout his career, Grammy
Award-winning Latin jazz
flutist Dave Valentín has been well
known for assisting fellow artists
and generously supporting local
organizations.
It comes as little surprise that in Valentin’s
own time of need, so many people would
look to return the favor.
On Tues., Jul. 1st at the Hostos Center for
the Arts and Culture, a benefit concert for the
artist will take place. The show features a roster of Latin jazz
luminaries including ten-time Grammy
winner and pianist Eddie Palmieri, AfroLatin Jazz Orchestra leader Arturo O’Farrill,
percussionist and arranger Bobby Sanabria,
bassists Rubén Rodríguez and Andy
González, Bronx-based pianist Valerie
Capers, ‪trombonist and band leader Papo
Vázquez and flutist Eddy Zervigón of
Charanga group Orquesta Broadway.
Valentín, a lifelong Bronx resident, suffered
a stroke in March 2012 and has been unable
to perform since.
Entitled “Para Ti” (For You), the concert
will raise money to defray the costs of
Valentín’s medical bills and assist with the
musician’s living expenses.
“Dave was always kind to everyone,”
said ‪Robert Sancho, Vice President of
Development and External Affairs at BronxLebanon Hospital Center, one of the show’s
organizers.

for performing various benefit shows and

Valentín would also play at street festivals
and music workshops for children, for no
compensation.
“The Bronx is so important to Dave,”
remarked Richie Bonilla, Valentín’s longtime
friend and manager. “He would always talk
about it during his stage show.”
Born in 1952 to Puerto Rican parents,
Valentín’s love for music started at an early
age — he played bongos and congas before
he was 10 and worked in Latin clubs by age
12. While at Bronx Community College,
Valentín switched to playing flute. He
appeared on his first recording in 1977 with
Ricardo Marrero’s group. Valentín later became the first musician to
be signed to the popular GRP recording label,
where he released over fifteen albums. Bonilla called the flutist an innovator in the
Latin jazz genre.
“When Dave first started out, the flute was
not the primary instrument in Latin jazz; it
wasn’t very common,” explained Bonilla. “He brought the flute to the forefront,” said
Bonilla. “Dave was groundbreaking in that
regard.”
In 2002, Valentín won a Grammy Award,
along with vibraphonist Dave Samuels
and saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera, for the
Caribbean Jazz Project’s recording The
Gathering. In addition to leading his own groups,
Valentín also served as musical director for
Tito Puente and his Golden Men of Latin Jazz.

Prostate Cancer:
What Every Man Should Know
Risk Awareness, Early Detection and
Treatment are Key to Survival

and it is important that we
make time to discuss prostate
cancer, the second leading cause
of cancer among men in the
Unites States, second only to skin
cancer.
I must reiterate that prostate cancer is not
a “death sentence”, if detected and treated
early. Nearly 100% of the cases are curable
when diagnosed and treated during the local
and regional stages of the disease, before
the advanced or metastatic stage.
Every year, approximately 233,000 new
cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed
around the nation, according to the
American Cancer Society (ACS) and the
Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF). About
1 man out 7 will be diagnosed during his
lifetime.
Risk factors include family history of
prostate cancer, aging (the disease mainly
affects men over age 40, with most cases
striking after age 65), certain concurrent
medical conditions such as Hepatitis C, and
ethnicity. African American men are 56%
more likely to be diagnosed in comparison
to Caucasian and Hispanic men, statistics
show.
The challenge in diagnosing and treating
prostate cancer is that the disease normally
doesn’t show symptoms until its distant
stages. This is why it is recommended
that every man talk to his doctor about
undergoing screenings starting at age 50 or
earlier if there is a family risk. Screenings
are in the form of a rectal exam to detect any
enlargement or abnormality in the prostate,
or a blood test to measure the prostatespecific antigen (PSA).
Some advanced stage symptoms include
slowing and hesitancy of urination,
sensation that the bladder has not emptied,
and back pain, among others. These
symptoms must be checked immediately,
although they are not necessarily indicative
of prostate cancer, as they are the same

s part of our ongoing BFP
series highlighting the
various favorite spaces, things
and people in our borough,
we turn to Nilka Martell,
who continues to explore her
hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter,
sister, mother of three beautiful
Bronx babies, photographer,
writer and motivator,” says
Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years
until December 2010, she has
since been dedicating her time to
exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are
indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow
residents aware and informed of
how lovely our borough is, what it
offers, and how to lend a helping
hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life,
Martell says, “I have never felt so
alive.”
I never learned how to swim.
As a result, I made certain to get my
children involved in swimming at a very
young age.
My youngest daughter is an avid
swimmer, who has swum every school day
for the past four years as part of her physical
education. We were fortunate enough to find
a high school that had functioning pools,
right here in the Bronx.
Her swimming instructor, Raluca Gruin,
is one of a kind.
Gruin, from Austria, is an international
aquatic teacher working at the Theodore
Roosevelt Educational Campus. She is
the recipient of 2011 New York State
Association of Health, Physical Education,
Recreation and Dance’s Amazing People in
Aquatics award, nominee for 2013 Teacher

On Fri., Jun. 20th, Gruin arranged for the
school to host a “World’s Largest Swimming
Lesson” (WLSL) to build awareness about
the importance of teaching children how to
swim.
WLSL is a global event where tens of
thousands of individuals participate in the
swimming lesson at the same time.
This year, over 800 water parks, pools and
aquatic centers registered to host lessons.
Locations included 48 states in the United
States and 26 different countries. According to WLSL’s statistics, drowning
is the leading cause of accidental death for
children aged 1 -5 and the second leading
cause for kids under age 14.
Last year there were 32,450 participants.
In this, the fifth Guinness World Record
attempt, WLSL was expecting over 40,000.
The information is still be compiled – we’ll
keep you posted as soon as the final results
are in.
At the Roosevelt campus, 25 Bronx
students participated.
Friday’s event began with an overview of
water safety awareness messages. Warning
and safety signs should always be read
and followed. The information posted near
pools, swimming areas and aquatic centers
serve as a tool in saving lives.
Students where taught to properly signal
for summoning help and to use a rescue
tube. Other parts of the lesson included safe
entry into water, breathing techniques, body
control, front and back floating, strokes and
basic locomotion.

accidental en niños de 1 a 5 años de edad y la

El año pasado hubo 32,450 participantes.
En éste, el quinto intento de récord mundial,
WLSL esperaba más de 40,000. La información
sigue siendo compilada, los mantendremos
informados tan pronto como los resultados
finales se anuncien.
En el campus Roosevelt participaron 25
estudiantes del Bronx.
El evento del viernes comenzó con una visión
general de los mensajes de sensibilización
sobre la seguridad en el agua. Las señales de
advertencia y de seguridad deben ser leídas
y seguidas. La información colocada cerca de
albercas, zonas de baño y centros acuáticos
sirven como una herramienta para salvar vidas.

tubo de rescate. Otras partes de la lección
incluyen entrada segura en el agua, técnicas de

such a brutal winter, what could be better than looking
forward to a bit of sunny rest and relaxation? But lest you think
that your kids have to put learning on hold, there are a number
of tools and games that they can still access – using your
smartphone – as they make their way through the season. Research shows that summer can often
bring about learning loss for many students.
Some schools, such as Inwood’s own The
Equity Project Charter (TEP), are even
experimenting with varying the schoolyear calendar to evade this trend.
And the fact is that children enjoy using
technology. In a 2012 Scholastic Parents
and Child Readers Panel survey, 69%
of the 2-5 year olds surveyed can use a
mouse. How to turn this phenomenon to
our advantage? The trick is to find ways
to use the smartphone apps for learning,
and making it fun, rather than making
technology an adversary. Set boundaries
on usage and time; discuss the goals with
your children ahead of time and establish
rewards.

what’s best for your child’s reading level,
talk to your child’s teacher before the
break, to your local librarian, and to other
parents. Don’t forget to talk to your child
as well. While reading on a small screen
might prove a bit of a challenge, you can
choose books with small chapters for the
younger set. In other instances, consider
using your tablet or borrowing a friend’s
for a weekend. You can also just grab your
library card and take out a couple of books.
Above all, read with your children. It is one

of the most important things you can do to
sustain your child’s literacy levels during the
summer.

Whatever method you choose, take time to
consider how you can ward off the summer
learning loss that undermines the strides
your child makes during the academic year.
Using technology is only one way. Making
a reading list and gathering a few of your
child’s schoolmates for a summer book club
– with rewards that include a trip to a local
amusement park or to the pool – is another.
Ask administrators or teachers in your child’s
school for workbook pages for the grade your
child will go into next year; you can work on
fractions or algebra while taking a break from
building sand castles.
But just make sure to do something.
Taking up such activities establishes early
on the truth that learning is a life-long process
not determined by the calendar – and that it is
fun any time of the year.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
encourage public housing authorities and private
owners of federally assisted multi-unit housing to adopt
smoke-free policies. Recognizing the health risks posed
by exposure to secondhand smoke, many housing
providers of low and affordable housing support voluntary
smoke-free policies for their buildings to prohibit smoking
anywhere on the premises (including within individual
apartments and common indoor areas) to protect
residents’ health and improve their quality of life.

Recently, Westchester LLC announced that their entire
housing stock will become smoke-free. The voluntary

part of Westchester LLC’s efforts to promote healthy and
sustainable growth for Bronx communities.
Secondhand smoke is a trigger for heart attacks and
especially asthma. It is also linked to a variety of lung
ailments, including lung cancer. A smoke-free building
protects the health of its tenants and encourages
residents to quit smoking.

Back to the future
Summer series focuses on 60’s

his summer, the Bronx
Documentary Center (BDC) is
looking back at the 1960’s with its
summer film series, “A Decade of
Change.”
A collection of documentary
films will spotlight
people and events of
the era considered one
of the most turbulent
and
transformative
times in American
history.
The BDC, a nonprofit gallery and
exhibition space, is
located in a striking
brick
building
on
the corner of Courtlandt Avenue and East
151st Street. The center was created to
share photography, film and new media
presentations with a community organizers
considered underserved.
Michael Kamber, who co-founded the
space in 2011 along with Danielle Jackson,
said that the goal is to stimulate dialogue
around social issues. “We’re basically interested in activism and
social justice,” explained Kamber. “We’re hoping to inspire people.”
That connection to activism made it natural
to highlight the 1960’s, Kamber said, as the
decade gave rise to the civil rights movement.
Currently on display at BDC is an exhibition
of photos by East Harlem-born photographer
Ben Fernández, who documented the 1960’s
with his camera and was a personal friend of
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Lining the BDC walls are
Fernández’s poignant blackand-white images depicting
scenes such as civil rights
marches and war protests.
Kamber said that the
display has been wellreceived, and has even been
used as an educational tool.
“We’ve had hundreds of
school kids in here with

BDC, una galería y espacio de exposición
sin fines de lucro, se encuentra en un llamativo
edificio de ladrillos en la esquina de la avenida
Courtlandt y la calle 151 este. El centro fue
creado para compartir fotografías, cine y nuevas
presentaciones de medios con organizadores
comunitarios considerados desatendidos.
Michael Kamber, quien co-fundó el espacio
en 2011 junto con Danielle Jackson, dijo que
el objetivo es estimular el diálogo en torno a
cuestiones sociales.
“Básicamente estamos interesados en el
activismo y la justicia social”, explicó Kamber.

En el Bronx, es un mercado de agricultores
completo.
El comercio estaba en auge en el último
oasis verde que surgió en el condado este
pasado sábado, 14 de junio.
Localizado en la Calle 138 entre las
Avenidas Willis y Alexander, el mercado
fue fundado por Roseanne Placencia y Lily
Kesselman. El dúo estaba comprometido a
revivir lo que era un desierto con poco acceso
a productos frescos – a pesar de estar al lado
del Mercado del Terminal de Hunts Point,
donde se transportan miles de libras de comida
todos los días. El mercado se inició con un
subsidio del Comité de Ciudadanos de Nueva
York y es dirigido por ‘City Farms Markets’, una
red de mercados de agricultores dirigido por la
comunidad.
Entre algunos de los visitantes el sábado
se encontraba la Portavoz del Concejo de la
ciudad Melissa Mark-Viverito y el chef Baron
Ambrosia nacido en el Bronx, como también
Gardenia Vizcaino.
Vizcaino estaba feliz de encontrar te de

Se dice que el te de ortiga es bueno para
la diabetes, así es que Vizcaino, quien es prediabética, quería tratarlo.
Vizcaino dijo que el mercado, con
sus hierbas frescas y vegetales, fue
un acontecimiento de bienvenida en la
comunidad.
“Aquí hay mucha gente enferma, y esto
ayuda”, dijo ella.
Mili Bonilla, quien vive en Parkchester, supo
del mercado en Twitter y fue preparada con
fundas reutilizables.

Dijo que los productos en su tienda de
alimentos local están por debajo de lo que es
satisfactorio.
“Sus productos, son de lo peor. Parece que
lo que nadie desea lo envian a nuestro camino”,
dijo.
“Iba a comprar col rizada. No puedes conseguir
una buena en el supermercado”.
Dijo que estaba feliz de saber que ya no
tendría que viajar hasta Union Square para
alimentos locales y frescos.
El Mercado de Agricultores del Sur del Bronx
debutó con tres casetas, pero los organizadores
esperan que crezca durante el verano, y hay
planes de incluir alimentos de la finca local del
vecindario, La Finca del Sur.
Wassaic Community Farms fue uno de los

Habiendo crecido en el Bronx, la fundadora
Placencia, experimentó directamente la falta de
productos frescos.
Cuando decidió ser vegetariana, tenía que
hacer viajes a fincas en la parte alta de Nueva
York para vegetales y frutas. Esas excursiones
abrieron sus ojos.
“Yo sabía que había una diferencia”, dijo ella.
“Pero una vez supe que había opciones, me di

Un poco después de mediodía, Wassaic
Community Farms vendió todos sus rábanos,
acelgas, ‘swiss chard’, ‘burdock root’ y col rizada,
y su menta, los teces de ‘sassafras’ y ‘burdock’
también se fueron.
La mayor demanda lo fue por el te de ‘burdock
root’, el cual sabe un poco a tierra. Se dice que el
te estabiliza las azúcares en la sangre.
“Mas personas lo están comprando aquí por
sus saludables beneficios”, dijo Ben Schwartz,
quien dirige Wassaic Community Farms.
Sin duda alguna fue para esas ventajas que

a ayudar con su eczema.
“Funciona”, dijo. “Ahora necesito muchos
vegetales”.
Jilberto dijo que estaba contenta de no tener

como normalmente hace.

Museum hit a home run this
past Sun., June 15th, with over 200
people in attendance to celebrate
dad with a Father’s Day “Baseball
Match”. Re-enactment actors

The event featured the New York Mutuals
– re-enactment actors from Old Beth Page
Village Restoration – who put on an exhibition
baseball game with 1864 rules, including balls,
bats, and uniforms.
But no helmets or gloves.
Following the game, kids joined in the fun
with a game of rounders, a child-friendly
version of baseball, with the Mutuals team
members.
The day also included free house tours of
Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum and a raffle for
the game ball.

Pero sin cascos ni guantes.
Después del partido, los niños se unieron a la
diversión con un juego de rounders, una versión
infantil del béisbol, con los miembros del equipo
Mutuals.
El día también incluyó visitas gratuitas a la

Valentín’s music director, pianist Bill
O’Connell, will organize the music for the
benefit concert.
Sancho remarked that Hostos Community
College was the ideal setting for the event,
due to Valentín’s longtime relationship with
the school.
Hostos President Dr. Félix V. Matos
Rodríguez said that Valentín “performed
on Hostos Center stages on many occasions
since our opening, and donated his talents
when needed for scholarship fundraisers and
other functions.”
He added, “We are honored and delighted
to host this musical tribute and fundraiser for
him.”
According to Bonilla, Valentín’s speech
and ability to walk have been impaired, but
have greatly improved from when the stroke
occurred two years ago. Valentín plans to appear at the benefit
concert, and go onstage to thank the artists
and audience.
“Dave is really appreciative of what
everyone is doing and he wants to express his
gratitude,” said Bonilla. “We hope that one day he’ll be up there
again, able to perform.”

Winners of the “Respect Our Block” Poster
Contest were announced this past Mon., Jun.
23rd by Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr.
The competition invited individual students
or groups of students to create a poster urging
neighbors to “Respect Our Block.”
The contest encouraged Bronx students to
keep their neighborhoods clean, and was open
to students of all ages across the borough.
Part of the borough’s ongoing centennial
celebration, “Respect Our Block” was
launched in March in response to concerns
regarding litter, pet waste and other issues.
Hundreds of students throughout the Bronx
submitted posters.
Of those submissions, two students were
chosen as winners: Aliya Victor, a kindergarten
student at P.S. 121 The Throop School, near
Allerton Avenue, and Marielys Pérez, a fifth
grader at P.S. 100 in the Soundview area of
the Bronx.
“We saw so many great posters as part of
this contest,” said President Díaz. “These two
posters showcased the community spirit we
want our students to embrace in The Bronx,
and were worthy of extra recognition.”
In addition to a public press conference, the
celebration included lunch with the borough
president, and each student also received a
Barnes & Noble e-reader and a large-scale
rendering of her poster.

After the Yankees players arrived for the
HOPE Week event, they sat in a circle and
listened to participants share their success
stories.
Coss Marte told the group that he was once
a drug kingpin, earning about $2 million
annually.
But Marte was arrested outside his Bronx
home and served numerous years in prison.
He explained how he turned his life around,
and that Career Gear helped him get back on
his feet after his release from jail.
Gay shared that he once struggled with
drug addiction, but is now clean, working
as an accountant and reconnecting with his
family.
Frequently, men aided by Career Gear
return to serve as mentors for new participants
— the six clients honored during HOPE Week
have been doing just that.
“You have the ability to not just sympathize,
but to help others get where they need to go,”
said Thompson.
“It’s like a support system — it’s therapeutic
to be around other people like yourself,”
remarked Gay. “Everyone comes in here with
a struggle, but they leave on a high note.”
For a lifelong baseball fan like Gay,
who grew up in the South Bronx, the thrill
of meeting the players was a powerful
experience.
“I can’t believe that Derek Jeter just fitted
me for a suit,” he said.
Gay reminisced about his childhood, and
how he’d walk the three miles to Yankee
Stadium with his siblings to watch Mickey

days,” he said. “Baseball is my first love.”
While the Career Gear clients were floored
by their brush with famous professional
athletes, the Yankees seemed equally touched
by the encounter — all players sat riveted as
the men told their individual stories.
“It was moving and inspirational at the
same time,” Roberts said.
“I’m happy for these men,” added center
fielder Ellsbury. “They look great. Hopefully
with the new suit, it will make them feel
confident going into a job interview.”
After helping participants pick out a new
shirt, tie and shoes to go with their suit,
infielder Roberts revealed that not everyone
on his team is skilled at putting on a tie.
“On road trips, I’ve helped teammates tie
their own before,” he joked.
The Yankees also donated $10,000 to Career
Gear to assist other men in the transition to
self-sufficiency. Yankees General Partner and
Vice Chairperson Jennifer Steinbrenner was
on hand to present a check to Field.
That evening, the six participants and
Career Gear staff were guests of honor at the
Yankees’ home game versus the Toronto Blue
Jays.
The Career Gear crew also got the chance
to step on the field after the game to high-five
the victorious Yanks, who dropped the Blue
Jays that night, 3-1.

the chance to get out and help the community
during HOPE Week.

The short documentary film Saving
Central, which tells the story of an all-black
high school in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was
screened. Central High School, a once-flourishing
integrated school, experienced re-segregation
in 2000 when the school board divided it into
separate schools.
The film was followed by a discussion
featuring
Nikole
Hannah-Jones,
an
investigative reporter for ProPublica, a nonprofit corporation focused on investigative
journalism, and Pedro Noguera, the Peter L.
Agnew Professor of Education at New York
University and Executive Director of the
Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity
and the Transformation of Schools.
The event also featured a display of
photographs by Tuscaloosa high school
students. Hannah-Jones said that while many people
still think of the South as racially backwards,
it’s far more integrated than other areas of the
country considered to be more progressive.
“The most segregated school district in the
nation is New York City,” said Hannah-Jones.
“The fight now is to keep the South from
looking like New York City.”
While Noguera was unable to attend,
Jeffrey Garrett, Principal at The Urban
Assembly Bronx Academy of Letters, was
present.
His school is a South Bronx school for
grades 6-12 that focuses on developing
communication and writing skills across
disciplines.
Garrett commented on the challenges
facing urban students of color.
“Black students in high poverty areas tend
to get the least experienced teachers and
weaker curriculums,” he said.
Two Tuscaloosa students — Camri Mason
and Darian Madison, both high school
sophomores — attended the BDC event. As
participants in a ProPublica-sponsored
project, they were tasked with taking pictures
documenting race and identity through their
eyes.
“The pictures show how people perceive
themselves to be,” said Madison.
Three films remain in BDC’s summer series.
Freedom Summer, a film by Emmy awardwinner Stanley Nelson, will be shown on Sat.,
July 12, followed by a panel discussion with
veterans of the 1964 Freedom Rides.
On Sat., July 19, a film about the life of
social justice activist Grace Lee Boggs will
be featured.
On Thu., Aug 7, the BDC will present
Gimme Shelter, the landmark documentary of
The Rolling Stones’ infamous 1969 Altamont
concert. Director Albert Maysles will be in
attendance.
“We chose films that we thought would
resonate with audiences,” said Kamber.
“Hopefully young people learn something
about an era that they missed.”

Dear Dr. Collymore,
Last month, we
took my 6 month
old niece, Regina,
to the ER because
she was wheezing
and coughing. They
said she probably
had a cold or virus
but to keep an eye
on her. Since then,
she’s gotten better
but I still notice
her wheezing and
sometimes I think
she may be having
trouble breathing.
My sister doesn’t
want to keep taking
her to the doctor, but
I’m scared maybe
she has Asthma. My
sister has Asthma
too and she smokes.
How do we know if
Regina has Asthma?
Do infants get
Asthma?

Dear Wanda,
Yes, unfortunately, infants
can have Asthma. Although
the cause of Asthma is
unknown, we believe that
some people are genetically
predisposed to it. If your
sister has Asthma and you’ve
noticed that your niece is
coughing and wheezing
with regularity, then there’s a
pretty decent chance that
she also has Asthma. Even
second hand cigarette
smoke can trigger lifethreatening
Asthma
attacks, so it’s essential that
your sister quit smoking—
if not for herself than for
her daughter.
While the causes of
Asthma are unknown,
there are known triggers
for Asthma attacks. In
addition to smoke, other
triggers
include
dust
mites,
mold,
aerosol
sprays and car pollution.
Even the common cold or
respiratory illness that your
little niece had when you
originally took her to the ER
could have triggered the
larger chronic condition of
Asthma.
Urge your sister to
bring Regina to one of
