I
t pays to keep moving.
With the National Basketball Association
(NBA) poised to kick off its season on
October 28th, it was time to get in the dunks
and dribbles.
Earlier this month, the New York Knicks
teamed up with the Coca-Cola Foundation
and the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO),
a division of Catholic Charities Community
Services of the Archdiocese of New York, for
a basketball clinic at Mount Saint Michael
Academy on Murdock Avenue.
The clinic was part of a three-year initiative
intended to tackle childhood obesity and to
shake up sedentary lifestyles by increasing
fitness activity among youth. Thousands of
children throughout the Archdiocese of New
York have made a commitment to take part.
“This is meant to inspire youngsters in
the CYO organization,” explained Josh
Gold, Director of Brands and Business
Communications at The Coca-Cola Company.
“Coca-Cola is committed to supporting
initiatives to make kids active.”

Kevin Sullivan, Executive Director of
Catholic Charities, Assemblymember Carl
Heastie and Councilmember Andy King.

importance of nutrition.
“Eat right,” he urged. “Make sure you don’t
put junk in your body.”
Starks, who played with the Knicks from
1990 through 1998, was the first player in
NBA history to make 200 three-pointers in
one season. He currently holds the Knicks’
all-time record in three-pointers.
But he admitted that he was not always so
mindful. As a child, he indulged in fried foods
too frequently. But as he got older, though, he
came to realize that fast food was “no good.”
“In order to perform at a high level, I had
to put all the right nutrients in my body,” said
Starks, adding that it takes discipline to stay
active and in shape.
And even professional athletes can fall off
the wagon.
After retiring, Starks said he reverted back
to less-than-stellar habits.
“That’s it, I don’t have to work out
anymore,” he thought then.
That lack of attention caught up to him. In
just one month, he went from 185 pounds to
230. He did not feel good about the weight
gain.
So, he made a 180-degree turn, changed his
diet and began exercising regularly. He shed 30 pounds in three months. “You can let yourself go,” he noted. “But
you can always get back on track.”
In May 2013, the Coca-Cola Foundation
awarded a three-year grant to Catholic
Charities Community Services to support
the CYO Fitness Challenge, which enhances
schools’ athletic programs by providing
nutrition education and fitness assessments
to 24,000 participants. The program will
eventually be implemented at 225 schools,
and aims to involve 35,000 children.

Con la Asociación Nacional de Baloncesto
(NBA por sus siglas en inglés) a punto de iniciar
su temporada el 28 de octubre, es hora de volver
a las clavadas y las gambetas.
Los Knicks de Nueva York se asociaron con
la Fundación Coca-Cola y la Organización de
la Juventud Católica (CYO por sus siglas en
inglés), una división de servicios comunitarios de
Caridades Católicas de la arquidiócesis de Nueva
York, a principios de este mes para una clínica de
baloncesto en la Academia Mount Saint Michael
sobre la avenida Murdock.
La clínica es parte de una iniciativa de tres
años destinada a hacer frente a la obesidad
infantil y a sacudir los estilos de vida sedentarios,
aumentando la actividad física entre los jóvenes
de la ciudad de Nueva York. 18,000 niños de
toda la arquidiócesis de Nueva York se han
comprometido a formar parte de las actividades

“Para tener un rendimiento de alto nivel tuve

Re-birth of North Central’s delivery ward

T
he Bronx celebrated the arrival
of its own special little bundle
of joy this past Thurs., Oct. 9th as
the North Central Bronx Hospital
launched the re-opening and $2
million renovation of its labor and
delivery ward.
Bronx mothers, white-coated doctors and
nurses, local elected officials, and hospital
administrators gathered on the seventh floor
at 3424 Kossuth Avenue for the ribboncutting ceremony, the culmination of a yearlong fight to bring the much-loved ward back
to the community following its closure due to
staff shortages. “Today is a rebirth of this service,” said
LaRay Brown, Senior Vice President at New
York City’s Health and Hospitals Corporation
(HHC), the network that oversees 11 New
York hospitals including North Central Bronx
Hospital. “It’s a rebirth of HHC.”
North Central Bronx Hospital was the
maternity ward of choice for approximately
1,400 expectant mothers each year before
closing August 2013.

care but has since recruited new healthcare
professionals.
“We have come a long way for all the
babies in the Bronx,” Brown said, adding the
hospital hopes for even more births at the new
facility.
The renovation features eight private
birthing suites, a 26 bed post-partum unit on
the 8th floor as well as a new post-anesthesia
Care Unit.
Comforts such as new fold-out sleeper
chairs and flat-screen televisions complement
new windows, floors, lighting and bright
colored walls in the suite.
“I’m overwhelmed because this is what
we’ve waited for,” said Councilmember
Ritchie J. Torres, who spearheaded a $600,000
contribution from City Council funds towards

the millions needed to modernize the ward.
North Central Bronx Hospital

The issue “brought the best out of elected
officials,” said Councilmember Torres said
as he stood amid other local representatives
including Congressman Charles Rangel,
Assemblymembers Jeffrey Dinowitz and
Mark Gjonaj, and Councilmember Andy
King.
“The birth of an innocent child is something
fantastic,” said Rep. Rangel, who served as the
primary sponsor of the Affordable Care Act in
the House of Representatives, and maintained
the importance of quality healthcare.
“If you’re not here and you’re not well, you
can’t even get a beginning,” said Rep. Rangel.

community support proved to be the
transformative key to gaining momentum for
the ward’s re-opening.
Such neighborhood efforts were a labor of
love for local moms such as Eileen Markey,
who took to the streets to spread word of the
unit’s closing. “This time last year was grim,” said
Markey, who lives in the Norwood area and
had her second child, Hugh, at the hospital in
2010.
“To those of us in the neighborhood, it felt
like something had been stolen,” she added.

For the sixth straight year,
KidCinemaFest, a film festival geared
specifically to children and their families, is
back in New York City.
Designed
to
heighten
children’s
appreciation for filmmaking and cultural
diversity, this year’s festival includes more
than 40 films from over 20 different countries.
KidCinemaFest 2014 will be held from
October 22 through October 31 at venues
such as The United Palace of Cultural Arts,
Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center, Casita
Maria in the South Bronx and uptown public
schools.
The event is free of charge and open to all
ages.
The films chosen this year are made for
children, and reflect the strong cultural and
social identities of the cities where they
were created, explained Armando Guareño,
Founder and Director of
KidCinemaFest.
“This year’s festival
differs from previous
years in that we have the
opportunity to show a
film from every continent
in the world,” remarked
Guareño. “We will also be
more interactive with the
kids this year, as we want
to know their thoughts on
the films and the festival in
general.”
KidCinemaFest
presents feature films,
documentaries, animation
and short films that are
suitable for children,
adolescents, young adults
and their families.
The festival is sponsored by Cine Art
Entertainment Productions, in collaboration
with Councilmember Ydanis Rodríguez,
Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center, and
Catholic Charities.
This marks the first year that KidCinemaFest
has screened films in the Bronx.
Guareño remarked, “Families can learn
about different cultures without having to
leave New York City.”
The festival kicks off on October 22 at
United Palace with a screening of Ernest
and Celestine, an Academy Award nominee
for Best Animated Feature, that tells the
story of an unlikely friendship between a
bear and a young mouse.
The festival closes on October 31 at
Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center
with the Dominican film Los Super. This
superhero movie depicts a former Olympic
champion who joins forces with a street
hustler and a radio technician, with the
intention of becoming inventors after a
crime wave hits their neighborhood.
Other
screening
highlights include: Caído
del mapa (Off the Map),
an Argentinean comedy;
Welcome to the Space Show,
a Japanese animation film
by Koji Masumari; La
Montaña (The Mountain),
a Dominican documentary;
and the Venezuelan family
film El Manzano Azul (The
Blue Apple Tree).
Several other shorter
length films will be shown
as compilations, including
Kid Flix Mix, a collection
of short films suited for
children as young as four.
“I strongly believe that
the festival has been helping [local youths]
to see the world from a different perspective
and learning more about other children’s
lifestyle from around the world,” said
Guareño.
The 6th Annual KidCinemaFest Film
Festival takes place from October 22 to
31, 2014 at various locations in Northern
Manhattan and the Bronx.

KidCinemaFest, un festival de cine
dirigido específicamente a niños y
sus familias, está de vuelta en la
ciudad de Nueva York.
Diseñado para aumentar
el aprecio de los niños por el
cine y la diversidad cultural, el
festival de este año incluye más de 40
películas de 20 países diferentes.
KidCinemaFest 2014 se llevará a cabo del 22
al 31 de octubre en lugares como el United Palace
de Artes Culturales, el Centro Cultural Alianza
Dominicana, Casita María en el sur del Bronx y
escuelas públicas del norte del condado.
El evento es gratuito y abierto a todas las

BCC hosts the second annual “Conference on Sustainable Energy and Design”
Last month, 300,000 marched through New York City calling for action on climate change.
This month, environmental experts from around the world will converge on Bronx
Community College and answer that call. On October 16th and 17th, the Conference on
Sustainable Energy and Design returns to the BCC campus, where the latest advances in
green technology, business, and urban planning will be discussed and displayed.
Front and center at the symposium will be plenty of “gee whiz” science, accessible to fans of Cosmos or
the New York Times science section — from packaging made of mushrooms to buildings with algae walls
to solar panels deployed by the computer that won on Jeopardy. The event, presented by BCC’s Center
for Sustainable Energy, will feature a stellar line-up of speakers and panelists will include:
• Jonathan D. Trent, Ph.D., NASA Scientist and the inventor of a system that uses algae to produce fuel,
electricity and heat while cleaning water and corralling carbon dioxide — he’s done a Ted Talk about it.
• Adam Siegel, a management consultant on energy and national security who is much sought after for his
expertise on how to convert new technology into a start-up business with public and private funding.
• Emily Wheeler, deputy director of the New York City Accelerator for a Clean and Resilient Economy,
which marshals the wisdom of entrepreneurs, international companies, and local businesses to concoct
solutions to climate and energy crises facing our city.

who continues to explore her
hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter,
sister, mother of three beautiful
Bronx babies, photographer,
writer and motivator,” says
Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years
until December 2010, she has
since been dedicating her time to
exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are
indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow
residents aware and informed
of how lovely our borough
is, what it offers, and how to
lend a helping hand in our
environment.”
Of this new time in her life,
Martell says, “I have never felt
so alive.”
After I was laid off from work in
December 2010, I decided to discover
my birth place, my home, the Bronx. This
decision afforded me the opportunity to
meet some amazing folks - in particular,
Bronx historian Morgan Powell.
Some of my articles have been based on
information I learned through his public and
private walking tours, and from some of his
research.
We soon became friends, and he mentored
me in countless ways, from research and
fact checking to helping structure our notfor-profit and planning and assisting in
many of our volunteer events.
There were several days that I woke up to
find Morgan tending flowers we had planted
on our block. Other days he would knock on
my door to drop off a plant, a book or a new
piece of research. I especially enjoyed our
“day dates” when we spent countless hours
walking the Bronx together.
He was a gentleman with a huge heart that
did for others without expecting anything in
return.
I was shocked to learn about his recent
passing.
I last saw Morgan in late August during
a private walking tour in the Hunts Point/
Longwood area. It was only four of us,

including Morgan. His public tours were
always well attended, but I was spoiled by
his private tours. I enjoyed the smaller setting
because it allowed me to ask questions.
During this last tour he shared with us
how he became interested in Bronx history.
As we walked from the AME Church on
Faile Street to the next location of the tour,
Morgan explained that during his days at the
New York Botanical Garden he would often
eat lunch by the Bronx River. One afternoon
he noticed a plaque, and he discovered it
was placed to honor poet Joseph Rodman
Drake.
He took an interest and researched the
poet. He found out that Drake spent much
of his childhood at the Hunt property (now
Hunts Point). In 1820, he was laid to rest in
the Hunt family plot. The family cemetery,
which includes the tombstones of the Hunt
and Leggett families, is named Joseph
Rodman Drake Park.
That single discovery changed the course
of Morgan’s life. His love and passion for
local history lead him to conduct extensive
research, specifically recording African
American and Latino history in the Bronx.
He left us with numerous videos on
YouTube and extensive blog postings

While it will never replace experiencing
one of his tours, his research is available to
all.
There is a longing to see my friend again,
a restlessness to hear his voice just one more
time.
Morgan had the brightest and most
genuine smile. He gave freely, sharing his
knowledge with all who listened. He was an
articulate and poised man, and someone who
you can count on for just about anything.
My dear friend Morgan, may you rest
in power and peace. You will never be
forgotten.

the half-century anniversary of the Hispanic
Heritage Day Parade, which celebrates over
2.4 million residents of Hispanic heritage
in New York. Over 20 countries from Latin
America were represented along the route.

to drink from rivers. In carnival settings, the ropes are used to draw
attention and signify power. “We let the people know we are here,”
Núñez said. “That is our tradition.” 10

Mark Kator, President and
Chief Executive Officer of
Isabella, said the “Raise the
Roof” gala is the center’s most
important annual event.
“Not only is it essential to our fundraising,
but it’s an opportunity to celebrate what our
organization and staff do,” explained Kator.
“We also get to recognize certain people
who are doing good work in healthcare.”
This year’s gala will give recognition to
three honorees — David A. Gould, senior
advisor to United Hospital Fund, for his
service to healthcare in New York; Optum,
Inc., for creating a managed care program for
nursing home residents; and Mark Lipton, for
his contributions and leadership
as the outgoing chairperson of
Isabella’s Board of Trustees. Founded in 1875, Isabella
provides services out of a main
campus on Audubon Avenue
and two additional locations,
both on Broadway — one
near 169th Street and another
at 216th Street. The Audubon
site features a 705-bed nursing
home, adult day health care,
rehab services and a children’s
daycare.

cancer-related death among women in New
York State. In 2011, the most recent year for
which data is available, more than 15,000
women were newly-diagnosed with breast
cancer in New York, with more than 2,600
women dying from the disease.
In addition to the national recognition, Governor
Cuomo proclaimed October as Breast Cancer
Awareness Month in New York State.
New York State Health Commissioner Dr.
Howard Zucker said, “We’ve achieved incredible
advances in the fight against breast cancer,
yet estimates show that one in eight women
will still face this challenge in their lifetime. It is
imperative that women understand that early
detection is crucial to successful treatment.
I urge all New York women to get screened
regularly to help prevent this tragic disease from
taking more lives.”
The causes of breast cancer are still unknown,
but several factors may increase a woman’s risk
for breast cancer,
including:
•Advanced age
•Being younger
than 12 years
of age at the first
menstrual period
•Starting menopause at an
older age
•Never giving birth or having
delayed giving birth to a first child
until age 30 or older
•Not breastfeeding
•Having a personal or family history (on the
mother’s or father’s side) of breast cancer, or
carrying certain gene mutations such as BRCA
1 or BRCA 2
•Being overweight or obese
•Being sedentary
•Having a history of radiation exposure to the
chest
•Taking hormone replacement therapy for an
extended period of time.

illian Roberts, directora ejecutiva
del Consejo Distrital 37 (DC 37 por

El popular restaurante en el 20 de la Avenida
Burnside es un destino para los amantes del

But women in the neighborhood felt very
strongly about retaining the maternity ward
at the hospital. Markey said that people
were prepared to fight for the unit, given the
intimate, spiritual process of birth, and the
ward’s midwife operation gave women a
special reason to battle to bring it back.
“Today is a win. It’s not often a win,” she
said. “Today is a win for babies of the Bronx.”
Markey’s neighbor, Elisabeth von Uhl,
strolled her three-year-old son Dax Shuffield
through the facility where he was born.
Dax had his own celebration on Tuesday,
which was his third birthday. The family lives
nearby and continued the tradition of having
breakfast at the hospital café.

n Wed., Oct. 8th, the town
hall meeting of Bronx school
District 12’s Community Education
Council (CEC) featured guest
visitor New York City Schools
Chancellor Carmen Fariña.
At the meeting, held at P.S. 214 on West
Farms Road, parents heard updates from
Fariña regarding Department of Education
(DOE) projects, and had the opportunity to
ask the Chancellor questions.
P.S. 214 is considered a DOE “partner
school” that collaborates with other public
schools to share best practices.
Community school District 12 comprises
25,820 students across 54 schools in grades
pre-K through 12.
“Our goal is to see our children empowered,”
said Ilka Rios, President of District 12’s CEC.
The CEC meeting came days after the
Chancellor announced the details of a new
school rating method, which abandons the
previous “report card” system of letter grades
in favor of a more detailed performance guide.
Fariña explained that the new system would
include more useful information for parents
and be less focused on test scores.
“We think the old system punished a lot of
schools unfairly,” Fariña commented. The issue of bullying was discussed —
Fariña told the audience about one Bronx
school that uses a “bullying box,” where
students can leave an anonymous note about
harassing behavior they witnessed.
“The principal checks it every day, and then
informs teachers to keep an eye out for certain
behavior,” said Fariña. “The kids don’t feel
like they’re tattling.”
Ultimately, the Chancellor said, family
involvement is needed to curtail bullying.
“Schools cannot do everything,” remarked
Fariña. “Parents have to be more engaged.”
Fariña said that it was essential for parents
to show an interest in their child’s education,
and actively ask them questions about their
school experiences.
“A lot of our kids don’t feel like they have
someone to talk to,” said Fariña. “Be sure
to ask your kids about their day and what’s
going on in school.”

done right, it can be

Recapturing the Scenic Wilds
The exhibit, “Recpaturing the Scenic
Wilds” is inspired by the naturalist legacy
of Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919), a
former resident of Wave Hill House who
had a lifelong passion for discovering and
collecting specimens for public exhibit.
It seeks to investigate and complicate the
notion of the natural history display. In the
1870’s, when Roosevelt was 11 and 12 years
old, his family spent two summers at Wave
Hill, and the burgeoning naturalist developed
his ardent interest in birds, taxidermy and
the study of nature.This attraction to natural
history and its display is shared by the nine

Each artist responds in various ways to
this type of artificially “organic” exhibit,
where the experience of the natural world is
transformed into a tightly controlled scene,

its very core,” said Dr. Eric Redlener, a cochair of this year’s gala. “People’s lives are truly enhanced by the
staff’s giving spirit and generous approach.”
The gala, which attracts about 300 people
each year, is an opportunity for the local
community to return some of that generosity. The artists featured are Alexa Hoyer,
Liselot van der Heijden, Dana Levy. Mark
Dion, Richard Barnes, Lori Nix, Ruth
Marshall, Jessica Segall and Hugh Hayden.
“Recapturing the Scenic Wilds” will be on
display until Sun., Dec.7th at Wave Hill’s
Glyndor Gallery.

Kator said that fundraising efforts are more
important than ever in the heathcare industry.
“It’s a greater challenge to maintain
services in an era of budget cuts and increased
costs,” he explained.
In addition to the Tribeca party, Kator said
he is excited for the opening of Isabella’s
state-of-the art rehabilitation center, which is
scheduled to debut this November.
“It’s an amazing facility,” said Kator.
“We’re very proud of it.”
Isabella’s “Raise the Roof” Gala 2014 will
be held on Thursday, October 16 at Tribeca
Rooftop, 2 Desbrosses Street in Manhattan. Cocktails are at 6:30 p.m.; dinner and

to the town of Trujillo where she is from.
“Because we love our country and love our
culture,” said Besantes, “we want everybody
to know about it and see what we really are.

parade because she wanted her two daughters, Ariella,
12, and Leilani, 2, to appreciate their Colombian
heritage. “I want them to stand strong in who they
are, and where they from and to always be proud,”
said Rivera.

“Hispanics are making up a higher and
higher percentage of New York City and
State,” said Victor Lazarte, who moved to
the States at the age of 5 from Bolivia. He
has attended the parade for several years
and considers it an important tradition,
especially for his younger siblings.
They were born here, he said, so it is an
opportunity to reconnect with the traditions
of home. “Back in Bolivia, you could see
someone get your meat for you,” Lazarte
noted. “Here you can go to the supermarket,
but you’re not really sure where it’s coming

Dear Arnetta,
Children as young as six
months can, and should, receive a flu vaccination.
Approximately
20,000
children under the age of 5
are hospitalized each year
due to pneumonia and other
complications from the flu.
The younger the child is, the
more dangerous the flu can
be. Other populations that
are vulnerable to flu complications include pregnant
woman, the elderly and chil-
dren and adults with health
issues such as asthma, diabetes and chronic lung disease. It’s equally important
that the loved ones and/or
caretakers of people who
are vulnerable to flu complications receive their flu
shots.
If you were vaccinated
last year, when you were
pregnant, your son may still
have some immunity. However, different strains of flu
pop up all the time, so you
should both receive another
vaccination this year. Other
than some possible soreness
at the injection site,
the vaccination has
few known side effects. Very young
children who have
never been exposed
to the flu may feel
achy and tired for a
couple of days; still,
the benefits of being vaccinated far
outweigh the risks,
especially for these
little ones.
The flu shot should
be included among the
vaccines that your baby receives at his 6 month checkup, but just to make sure,
you should ask your pediatrician. At Acacia’s Family
