Located in Washington, D.C., the University

Gospel (Mark 7: 31-37)
Again Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the
district of the Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech
impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from
the crowd. He put his finger into the man's ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he
looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, "Ephphatha!"--that is, "Be opened!" -And immediately the man's ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he
spoke plainly. He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the
more they proclaimed it. They were exceedingly astonished and they said, "He has done all
things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak."
Brief commentary
In last week’s gospel we heard the debate between Jesus and the Pharisees about what constitutes cleanliness and
uncleanliness. Jesus emphatically sided with integrity of heart over ritual purity as the basis of holiness and by so doing
broke a ritual barrier that represented a cause of division. In today’s gospel we find Jesus the barrier-breaker who goes
into the Gentile district of Tyre and Sidon and the Decapolis, breaking down barriers based on religion, geography, gender
and ethnicity. Today’s first reading and psalm illumines the meaning of Jesus’ saving ministry in both Jewish and Gentile
territories: “Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God; he comes with vindication; with
divine recompense he comes to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the
lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing” (Isaiah 35:4-5). Jesus, the Son of God, comes to all responding to
the many needs and troubles that assail the people, and does so with saving mercy. This is the Christian good news.
Without incantations like other healers accustomed, Jesus comes with the power of his touch and of his command to liberate
people from what holds them bound. He liberates in ways that according to the prophet only God has the power to do. The
deaf man with a speech impediment of today’s gospel is brought to Jesus, and Jesus frees him from deafness so that he could
hear; and from his speech impediment so that he could speak plainly. Jesus frees us from our constraints in order to free us
for something wonderful.
When many of us were brought to be baptized as children, an optional prayer called the ‘Ephphetha’ (“Be Opened!”) could
have been prayed by the priest or deacon. In that prayer, which follows the lighting of the baptismal candle, the ears and
mouth of the baptized are touched with the words, “The Lord Jesus made the deaf hear and the mute speak. May he soon
touch your ears to receive his word, and your mouth to proclaim his faith, to the praise and glory of God the Father.” And
like the letter of James tells us, this faith is to be proclaimed by being actively lived. Like Jesus who “did all things well,”
Christians are called to open the eyes of the blind to truth and the ears of the deaf to hear the good news of God’s merciful
love for them. God’s love will enable them to “leap for joy” and “sing” the praises of the one who has come to free us from
what binds us so that we may be free to trust and hope, and live according to the life-giving power of love.
As the people of God who journey through the desert of
this world we do not depend on our own strength, but on
the grace of the One who journeys with us and leads us
toward the fulfillment of all of God’s promises.
♦ Jesus did not allow barriers to hinder him from reaching
out to everyone and treating people as people. In our own
families, parishes, communities, work-places, and nation,
we too must be barrier-breakers announcing the Gospel
of Jesus Christ.
♦ Jesus has come to free us from what is evil and free us for
what is good. We need to be open to receive his healing
touch and his liberating command, so that we can live
according to the Word of God every day of our lives.
♦ In and through the Church Jesus extends his healing,
liberating, and empowering mission to all people. We can
participate in the Church’s mission through the many
numerous lay ministries, as well as the religious life and
the priesthood.

1. In the Responsorial Psalm we sang the praises of the
Lord, who “gives sight to the blind, raises up those
who were bowed down, loves the just and protects
strangers.” How can you, as a disciple of Jesus
Christ, do the same in our world?
2. Make it a custom to pray the Ephphetha for your
children, so that, more than hearing the dominant
message of the market-culture and becoming
spokespersons for its values, they may be open to
hearing God’s Word, sharing it with conviction, and
living according to it throughout their lives. What
else can you do to enable others to hear the Word of
God and put it to practice?

mundo para hacerlos ricos en la fe y herederos del Reino?

Evangelio (Marcos 7, 31-37)
Se marchó de la región de Tiro y vino de nuevo, por Sidón, al mar de Galilea, atravesando la
Decápolis. Le presentan un sordo que, además, hablaba con dificultad, y le ruegan imponga la
mano sobre él. El, apartándole de la gente, a solas, le metió sus dedos en los oídos y con su saliva le
tocó la lengua. Y, levantando los ojos al cielo, dio un gemido, y le dijo: “Effatá”, que quiere decir:
“¡Ábrete!”. Se abrieron sus oídos y, al instante, se soltó la atadura de su lengua y hablaba
correctamente. Jesús les mandó que a nadie se lo contaran. Pero cuanto más se lo prohibía, tanto
más ellos lo publicaban. Y se maravillaban sobremanera y decían, “Todo lo ha hecho bien; hace
oír a los sordos y hablar a los mudos.”
Comentario breve
En el evangelio de la semana pasada oímos un debate entre Jesús y los fariseos sobre lo que constituía la pureza e impureza.
Jesús enfáticamente opto por la integridad de corazón sobre la pureza ritual como la base de la santidad, y así rompió la
barrera ritual que daba causa de división. En el evangelio hoy encontramos a Jesús, el rompedor de barreras que entra a los
distritos gentiles de Tiro y Sidón y la Decapolis, rompiendo barreras basadas en religión, geografía, género y etnicidad. La
primera lectura de hoy nos ilumina el significado de el ministerio salvífico de Jesús en ambos territorios, de judíos y gentiles:
“Decid a los de corazón intranquilo: "Ánimo, no temáis! Mirad que vuestro Dios viene vengador; es la recompensa de Dios, él
vendrá y os salvará. Entonces se despegarán los ojos de los ciegos, y las orejas de los sordos se abrirán. Entonces saltará el cojo
como ciervo, y la lengua del mudo lanzará gritos de júbilo” (Isaías 35:4-5). Jesús, el Hijo de Dios, viene a todos, respondiendo a
las muchas necesidades y dificultades que azoten al pueblo, y lo hace con misericordia salvífica. Esta es la buena nueva
cristiana. Sin magia, como acostumbraban otros curadores, Jesús viene con el poder de su contacto y palabra para liberar al
ser humano de todo lo que le ata. Jesús libera de maneras que de acuerdo al profeta solo Dios tiene el poder para lograr. El
sordo y mudo es llevado a Jesús, y Jesús lo libera de su sordera para que pueda oír; y de su impedimento en hablar para que
pueda hablar libremente. Jesús nos libera de lo que nos ata en orden que seamos libres para algo maravilloso.
Cuando muchos fuimos traídos como niños al bautizo, una oración opcional llamada el ‘Éfeta’ (“Ábrete!”) pudo haber sido
rezada por el sacerdote o diacono. En esa oración, que le sigue el alumbramiento de la vela bautismal, los oídos y boca del
bautizado son tocados con las palabras, “El Señor Jesús hizo oír a los sordos y hablar a los mudos. Que pronto toque tus
oídos para recibir su palabra, y tu boca para proclamar su fe, para la alabanza y gloria de Dios Padre.” Y como nos dice la
carta de Santiago, esta fe tiene que ser proclamada viviéndola activamente. Como Jesús quien “todo lo ha hecho bien,” los
cristianos son llamados a abrir los ojos de los ciegos a la verdad y los oídos de los sordos a la buena nueva del amor
misericordioso de Dios. Dios los hará saltar de gozo y cantar las alabanzas del que ha venido a liberarnos de lo que nos ata
para que seamos libres para confiar y esperar, y vivir de acuerdo al poder vivificador del amor.
Como el Pueblo de Dios que peregrina por el desierto
de este mundo, no dependemos de nuestras propias
fuerzas, sino en la gracia Del que peregrina con
nosotros y nos guía hacia el pleno cumplimiento de las
promesas de Dios.
♦ Jesús no permitió que las barreras lo impidan a extenderse a todos,
para tratar a todos como personas con dignidad. En nuestras
familias, parroquias, comunidades, lugares de empleo, y nación,
también nosotros cruzar barreras anunciando el evangelio de
Jesucristo.
♦ Jesús ha venido a liberarnos del mal y liberarnos para el bien.
Necesitamos abrirnos a recibir su toque sanador y su palabra
liberadora, para poder vivir diariamente de acuerdo a la Palabra de
Dios.
♦ En la Iglesia, y a través de ella, Jesús extiende su misión sanadora y
liberadora a todos. Podemos participar en la misión de la Iglesia a
través de numerosos ministerios laicos, o en la vida religiosa
consagrada o el sacerdocio.
Para la reflexión comunitaria:
Después de una pausa breve para reflexionar en
silencio, comparta con otros sus ideas o sentimientos.
1. ¿El profeta Isaías anuncio la buena nueva de la venida del mesías, y la
multitud en el evangelio de hoy no podían contenerse de proclamar las
grandes hazañas de Jesús. ¿Como puedes ser un testigo convincente del
reino de Dios inaugurado por Jesús; y anunciando con el profeta, “Sed
fuerte! Aquí está tu Dios que viene a vindicar” ¿Como puedes traer esta
esperanza y consolación a los que la necesitan?
2. En el salmo responsorial cantamos las alabanzas del Señor que, “da vista a
los ciegos, levanta a los caídos, ama al justo y protege al forastero.” ¿Como
puedes tú, como discípulo/discípula de Jesucristo, hacer lo mismo en
nuestro mundo? Acostúmbrate a rezar el ‘Éfeta’ por tus hijos, para que,
más que oigan el mensaje popular del comercio (y que se conviertan en
portavoces de sus valores), lleguen en vez a abrirse a la palabra de Dios, a
que la compartan con convicción, y vivan de acuerdo a ella a lo largo de sus
vidas. ¿Qué mas puedes hacer para posibilitarles a otros a oportunidad de
oír la palabra de Dios y ponerla en práctica?

EE.UU. situada en Washington, D.C.

de 4,000 estudiantes que disfrutan de una excelente

2015”. Esta es una de las actividades principales
