2016 Archbishop’s Charity
and Development Drive (ABCD) Begins
As we begin the 2016 year, let us reflect on the many
blessings in our lives. When we truly believe that all
we have is a gift from God, then we must be willing
to give up some things so that we can share our
blessings as God intended. Living a stewardship
lifestyle means not only being responsible for our
own life, but the lives of others as well.
Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one
another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people
like to hear. We think it means that we must give up
something that we want. However, the literal
meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the
words of “sacer” meaning sacred and “facere”
meaning to make. In other words, we make our lives
holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.
Soon we will be asking you to make a contribution to
this year’s ABCD, please take this time to
prayerfully consider what sacrificial gift you will be
able to place at God’s service.
If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all
and the servant of all. Mark 9:35.

Dynamic Catholic. He will be speaking on the
subject of marriage. This is a wonderful opportunity

Gospel reading ( Luke 3: 15 - 16, 21 - 22)
The people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John
might be the Christ. John answered them all, saying, “I am baptizing you with water, but one
mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize
you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had
been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him
in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you
I am well pleased.”
Brief commentary
The Eastern Church considers several events in the life of Jesus to be ‘epiphanies’ or ‘manifestations/revelations’ of
Jesus’ true exalted identity and mission. Among these are the epiphany to the magi (which the Church celebrated last
Sunday), the epiphany of Jesus’ first miracle of turning water into wine at the wedding of Cana (which we will
remember next week), and the epiphany to Jesus and about Jesus, which took place during Jesus’ baptism at the River
Jordan. As Jesus’ baptism marked the end of his “hidden years” and the beginning of his public ministry, with this
Sunday the final week of the Christmas season also closes and the Ordinary Time of the liturgical calendar begins. In
today’s gospel we once again find the figure of John the Baptist, as we had found him in the Advent readings. Today the
precursor’s announcements gives way to their fulfillment as Jesus arrives to be baptized. John must have been a very
important figure in first century Palestine, and he must have led a very successful conversion movement characterized
by repentance, asceticism, and wholehearted commitment to the coming kingdom of God. The break with the past and
the embracing of a new life and earnest preparation was signaled by an immersion (a baptism) in the waters of the
Jordan, which was a river that reminded Jews of their ancestors’ liberation from slavery into the freedom of the
Promised Land. Fervent messianic expectations must have been palpable as John announced the coming of the one who
would cleanse the world with the “Holy Spirit and fire” and bring about God’s own sovereign order. In this desert
wilderness Jesus comes to hear John and to associate himself with his urgent message about the coming reigning of God.
And while praying – and Luke is the gospel that most features Jesus in prayer – Jesus has a defining experience that
would inspire his ministry until its completion. Jesus, empowered and inspired by the Spirit, heard the voice of God the
Father confirming his unique divine sonship. As Christians we find here a deeply mysterious revelation of the one true
living God, the Trinity. As Christians we receive a baptism different from John’s, one in which we are immersed into the
sacramental participation (and identification) in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This too marks a
defining moment in our lives, for we receive the “Spirit of adoption” and are reborn as filii in Filio (children in the Son)
who cry out to God, “Abba!” “Father.” At our baptism we become “new creations in Christ,” are incorporated into his
Body (the Church), are called to follow Jesus Christ, and are empowered for the mission of announcing his Gospel with
words, deeds, and life. It is thus very fitting that at the beginning of ordinary time we are confirmed in our new
baptismal identity as Christians, filled with the Spirit, following Jesus Christ as adoptive children of the one God and
Father of all, chosen before the foundation of the world to accomplish the mighty works of God.

Church’s liturgical calendar its commemoration marks the
end of the Christmas season and the beginning of Ordinary
Time, characterized by an assiduous following of Jesus

Jesus Christ already begun at the defining moment and
turning-point of our own baptism in Christ.
♦ John the Baptist’s witness and message galvanized crowds,
who sought to prepare themselves for the coming reign of
God. Jesus confirmed John’s message by associating himself
with his movement, but also by becoming its definitive
fulfillment.

En aquel tiempo, el pueblo estaba en expectación, y todos se preguntaban si no sería Juan el
Mesías; él tomó la palabra y dijo a todos: “Yo os bautizo con agua; pero viene el que puede más
que yo, y no merezco desatarle la correa de sus sandalias. Él os bautizará con Espíritu Santo y
fuego. “En un bautismo general, Jesús también se bautizó. Y, mientras oraba, se abrió el cielo,
bajó el Espíritu Santo sobre él en forma de paloma, y vino una voz del cielo: “Tú eres mi Hijo, el

amado, el predilecto.”
La Iglesia oriental considera varios eventos en la vida de Jesús como ‘epifanías’ o ‘manifestaciones/revelaciones’ de la
verdadera y exaltada identidad y misión de Jesús. Entre estas están la epifanía a los magos (que la Iglesia celebro el

evangelio de hoy de nuevo nos encontramos con la figura de Juan Bautista, tal como lo habíamos encontrado en las
lecturas de Adviento. Hoy el anuncio del precursor da paso a su cumplimiento al llegar Jesús para ser bautizado. Juan
debe de haber sido una figura importante en la Palestina del primer siglo, y el debía de haber dirigido un movimiento
exitoso de conversión, caracterizado por el arrepentimiento, ascetismo, y compromiso profundo al reino de Dios
entrante. El corte con el pasado y la acogida a una vida nueva con una asidua preparación fue señalada por una
emersión (un bautizo) en las aguas del Jordán, rio que les recordaba a judíos la liberación de sus antepasados de la
esclavitud a la libertad de la Tierra Prometida. Expectativas fervorosas mesiánicas debían de haber sido palpable
cuando Juan anunciaba el que había de venir a purificar al mundo con “el Espíritu Santo y fuego” y a inaugurar el
orden soberano de Dios. En el desierto Jesús viene para oír a Juan y para asociarse con su mensaje urgente sobre el
entrante reinado de Dios. Y mientras orando – Lucas es el evangelio que mas presenta a Jesús orando – Jesús tiene una
experiencia impactante que inspirará su ministerio hasta su cumplimiento. Jesús, inspirado por el Espíritu, oyó la voz de
Dios Padre confirmando su filiación divina y única. Como cristianos aquí encontramos una revelación profunda y
misteriosa del único Dios viviente, la Trinidad. Como cristianos hemos recibidos un bautismo diferente al de Juan, uno
en que somos sumergidos en una participación sacramental (e identificación) en la muerte, entierro, y resurrección de
Jesucristo. Esto también marca un momento señalado en nuestras vidas, porque recibimos el “Espíritu de adopción” y
renacimos como filii in Filio (hijos en el Hijo) quienes claman, “¡Abba!” “Padre.” En nuestro bautismo nos convertimos
en “nuevas creaciones en Cristo,” fuimos incorporados en su Cuerpo (la Iglesia), somos llamados a seguir a Jesucristo, y
somos apoderados para la misión de anunciar el Evangelio con palabras, obras y vida. Es muy apropiado que al
comienzo del Tiempo Ordinario seamos afirmados en nuestra identidad bautismal como cristianos, llenos del Espíritu,
siguiendo a Jesucristo como hijos e hijas adoptivos del único Dios y Padre de todos, ‘elegidos desde antes de la fundación
del mundo para anunciar las obras poderosas de Dios’.
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes:
♦ La Iglesia – tanto como los evangelios – considera el
bautismo de Jesús como un momento destacado de la vida y
misión de Jesús. En el calendario litúrgico de la Iglesia su
conmemoración marca la conclusión del tiempo navideño y
el comienzo del Tiempo Ordinario, caracterizado por un
asiduo seguimiento de Jesucristo. Hoy también nosotros
somos llamados a una vida nueva en Jesucristo ya
emprendida en el momento destacado de nuestro propio
bautismo en Cristo.
♦ El testimonio y mensaje de Juan Bautista galvanizó
multitudes, quienes buscaban prepararse para la venida del
reinado de Dios. Jesús confirmó el mensaje de Juan
asociándose con él y con su movimiento, pero también en
siendo su cumplimiento definitivo.
Para la reflexión comunitaria:
Después de una pausa breve para reflexionar en silencio, comparta
con otros sus ideas o sentimientos.
1. ¿Cuáles relatos de los evangelios para mi más revelan o manifiestan la
identidad y misión de Jesús?
2. La experiencia poderosa de Jesús le llegó cuando oraba. La oración es la
marca distintiva de las personas de fe. Las personas de fe oran. ¿Oro con
fervor? ¿Es la oración el respiro de mi vida cristiana? ¿Estoy abierto(a) al
Espíritu Santo en mi vida?
3.
¿Cómo comprendo a mi bautismo? ¿Hasta qué punto considero mi
bautismo como una identificación y participación en la muerte, entierro y
resurrección de Jesucristo, y como una nueva identidad y misión con
Cristo? ¿Cómo puede tal (re)descubrimiento llevar a un compromiso
más radical con la causa del Evangelio?

DONACIONES DE SANGRE
17 DE ENERO DE 2016
El Oneblood estarán en St. Agnes el próximo
domingo 17 de enero para recoger donaciones de
sangre. El horario es de 8:30 AM a 3:30 PM y de 5:00
PM a 10:00 PM. Cuando donas sangre estás
ayudando a vivir a cuatro personas más. Si estás sano
y puedes, comparte el don de la vida donando sangre.
Comienza la Campaña de Caridades
y Desarrollo del Arzobispo (ABCD) 2016
Al comenzar el año 2016, reflexionemos sobre las
muchas bendiciones que tenemos en nuestras vidas.
Cuando realmente creemos que todo lo que tenemos es
un regalo de Dios, entonces debemos estar dispuestos a
renunciar a algunas cosas para poder compartir
nuestras bendiciones como Dios manda. Vivir la vida
según el estilo de la mayordomía significa no sólo ser
responsables de nuestra propia vida, sino de las vidas
de los demás.
Jesús nos enseña que estamos llamados a servirnos los
unos a los otros. “Sacrificio” no es una palabra que a
mucha gente le gusta oír. Creemos que esto significa
que debemos renunciar a algo que queremos. Sin
embargo, el significado literal de sacrificio es
“santificar”, hacer que algo sea santo, y proviene de las
palabras latinas sacer, que significa sagrado, y facere,
que significa hacer. En otras palabras, hacemos que
nuestra vida sea santa compartiendo nuestros dones al
servicio de Dios.
Pronto les pediremos que hagan una contribución al
ABCD de este año; por favor, dedique este tiempo a
considerar en oración qué donativo sacrificial será
usted capaz de poner al servicio de Dios.
