Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the
desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they
were over he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone
to become bread.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, One does not live on bread alone.” Then he
took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant. The devil said to
him, “I shall give to you all this power and glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I may
give it to whomever I wish. All this will be yours, if you worship me.” Jesus said to him in reply,
“It is written: You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.” Then he led
him to Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the
Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written: He will command his angels
concerning you, to guard you, and: With their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot
against a stone.” Jesus said to him in reply, “It also says, You shall not put the Lord, your God, to
the test.” When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.
Brief commentary
Today is the first Sunday of the holy season of Lent. Christians everywhere are beginning a forty-day
journey into the „desert‟, a time of asceticism and spiritual battle, of conversion of mind, heart and life, a
time of repentance and self-denial. Lent is a time of a more conscious rejection of sin and of a deeper
recommitment to following Christ in whose life, passion, death and resurrection we are baptized. It will be
characterized by acts of self-denial, prayer, alms to the poor and charity, with traditions such as fasting,
the Stations of the Cross and a greater recourse to the Sacrament of Penance, with the goal of a more
profound conversion in Jesus Christ. For those preparing to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the
Easter Vigil, it is the final and more intense journey of preparation for their immersion into the Paschal
Mystery of Jesus Christ through the “bath of rebirth” (Titus 3:5). In the Sacraments they will participate
in Jesus‟ death and resurrection and be reborn as members of his Church, empowered by the Spirit to
participate in his mission in the world. Baptized Christians during Lent will too relive their
catechumenate, which includes a firm renunciation of sin, so as to renew their baptismal vows of new life
in Jesus Christ; thus identifying with his Gospel and his mission more closely. In today’s gospel reading we
find the story of Jesus‟ temptation in the desert. The desert is a place of contrasts: of beauty and austerity,
of tranquility and of testing. There the Israelites were put to the test for forty years and often failed in their
faith and fidelity. Jesus in contrast was led into the desert by the Spirit for forty days where he was
tempted by the devil and prevailed both in faith and fidelity. As such, he is the culmination of Israel’s call
to trust God, fidelity toward God and holiness of life in imitation of God. In the power of the Spirit and
with the knowledge and a correct understanding of the Scriptures, Jesus decisively prevails against
temptations to become self-serving, to opt for self-aggrandizement and power, and toward a false kind of
faith in God. Jesus counters each man-centered interpretation of Scripture with a God-centered
interpretation. This temptation story reveals that life often put Jesus to the test, and that there were
temptations to become a type of political – even militant – messiah, such as what his contemporaries
desired and would have enthusiastically supported. Instead, Jesus decided to take the more counterintuitive route and chose to redefine the very meaning of messiah. His ideas would prove to be far more
innovative, more ground-breaking and radical than anything anyone else had conceived, and they would
have an immensely far-reaching influence in the hearts of more people than any other kind of messianism
could. Jesus opted for the much harder and mysterious, but true, „way of God‟. At the end of the story we
are told that, after putting Jesus to the test, the devil “departed from him for a time.” This implies a return,
perhaps on a number of occasions, but most especially at the decisive moments before his arrest at the
garden of Gethsemane and passion. The New Testament “letter” to the Hebrews tells us that Jesus is able
to empathize with our plight, because he was tested in every way, yet did not sin (Heb 4:14-16). The
temptations both show us the humanity of Jesus and they inspire us with him as the exemplar and
“pioneer of our faith.” So Lent offers us an opportunity for cleansing in preparation for renewal. Hosea
the prophet, using the imagery of the desert, a place of few distractions (no cell phones, iPods, iPods,
laptops, video games, television, parties, malls) and of a need for reliance on God‟s providence, envisions
God alluring his unfaithful spouse – the people of Israel – into the desert where they had first become
God‟s people in order to renew with them their relationship and ties of covenantal love: “Therefore, I will
allure her now; I will lead her into the wilderness and speak persuasively to her. I will make a covenant for
them on that day...I will betroth you to me forever: I will betroth you to me with justice and with
judgment, with loyalty and with compassion; I will betroth you to me with fidelity, and you shall know the
LORD” (Hosea 2:16; 20-22).
Today’s reading offers significant message:
Lent offers Christians opportunities for an assiduous battle against sin in all its
forms, so as to prepare to be renewed in our life in Jesus Christ, through the
liturgical participation in his Paschal Mystery.
Life put Jesus to the test, and each time he affirmed his unyielding trust, fidelity and
devotion to God. Jesus both empathizes with our weakness and with his example
and grace calls us to follow him in his full dedication to doing God‟s will.
The biblical imagery of the desert offers each Christian a rich and multifaceted
symbol of self-renunciation, of solitude for a deeper Christian spirituality, a call to
return to what is most essential, and an invitation to draw near to God in trust,
fidelity and devotion.
Evangelio (Lucas 4, 1-13)
En aquel tiempo Jesús, lleno del Espíritu Santo, volvió del Jordán y, durante cuarenta días, el Espíritu lo fue
llevando por el desierto, mientras era tentado por el diablo. Todo aquel tiempo estuvo sin comer, y al final
sintió hambre. Entonces el diablo le dijo: “Si eres el Hijo de Dios, dile a esta piedra que se convierta en pan.”
Jesús le contestó: “Está escrito: “No sólo de pan vive el hombre.” Después, llevándole a lo alto, el diablo le
mostró en un instante todos los reinos del mundo y le dijo: “Te daré el poder y la gloria de todo eso, porque a
mí me lo han dado, y yo lo doy a quien quiero. Si tú te arrodillas delante de mí, todo será tuyo.” Jesús le
contestó: “Está escrito: “Al Señor, tu Dios, adorarás y a Él sólo darás culto.” Entonces lo llevó a Jerusalén y
lo puso en el alero del templo y le dijo: “Si eres hijo de Dios, tírate de aquí abajo, porque está escrito:
“Encargará a los ángeles que cuiden de ti,” y también: “Te sostendrán en sus manos, para que tu pie no
tropiece con las piedras.” Jesús le contestó: “Está mandado: “No tentarás al Señor, tu Dios.” Completadas
las tentaciones, el demonio se marchó hasta otra ocasión.
Comentario
Hoy es el primer domingo de la santa Cuaresma. Los cristianos mundialmente comenzamos una jornada de
cuarenta días por el „desierto‟, un tiempo de asceticismo y batalla espiritual, de conversión de mentalidad, de
corazón y de vida, y tiempo de arrepentimiento y abnegación. La Cuaresma es un tiempo de un rechazo más
consciente del pecado y un compromiso más profundo en siguiendo Cristo en cuya vida, pasión, muerte y
resurrección hemos sido bautizados. Sera caracterizado por obras de abnegación, ofrendas a los pobres y
obras de caridad, con prácticas como el ayuno, la practica del Vía Crucis, y un recurso más grande al
Sacramento de Reconciliación – todo con la meta de una conversión más audaz en Jesucristo. Para los que se
preparan a recibir los Sacramentos de Iniciación en la Vigilia Pascual, la Cuaresma es la última y más intensa
porción de su jornada de preparación para su inmersión en el Misterio Pascual de Jesucristo por el “banyo de
renacimiento” (Titos 3:5). En los Sacramentos ellos participaran en la muerte y resurrección de Jesús y
renacerán como miembros de su Iglesia, apoderados por el Espíritu a participar en su misión en el mundo.
Cristianos bautizados también revivirán su catecumenado a lo largo de la Cuaresma, que incluye una firme
renuncia del pecado, para así renovar sus promesas bautismales de nueva vida en Jesucristo – así,
identificándose más íntimamente con su Evangelio y misión. En el evangelio de hoy encontramos el narrado
de la tentación de Jesús en el desierto. El desierto es un lugar de contrastes: de belleza y austeridad, de
tranquilidad y de prueba. Allí los Israelitas fueron probados por cuarenta años y frecuentemente fracasaron
en su fe y fidelidad. Jesús, en contraste, fue conducido al desierto por el Espíritu por cuarenta días donde fue
tentado por el diablo, y prevaleció en su fe y fidelidad. De esa manera, Jesús es el cumplimiento del llamado a
Israel a confiar en Dios, a ser fiel a él y a una vida de santidad en imitación a Dios. En el poder del Espíritu y
con el conocimiento y comprensión correcta de las Escrituras, Jesús prevaleció definitivamente contra las
tentaciones de ser egoísta, de optar por autoengrandecimiento y poder, y de optar por una falsa fe en Dios.
Jesús contrarresto cada falsa interpretación de la Escritura, centrada en el hombre, con interpretaciones
centradas en Dios. El narrado de la tentación revela que la vida frecuentemente puso a Jesús a prueba, y que
había tentaciones de adoptar un mesianismo de tipo político – y quizás hasta militar – como sus
contemporarios deseaban y hubieran apoyado entusiásticamente. En vez, Jesús decidió tomar una ruta más
contra-intuitiva y escogió redefinir el significado del concepto de „mesías‟. Sus ideas probaron ser mucho más
originales y radicales, más originales y revolucionarias, que cualquiera idea que se había concebido. Y
tuvieron sus ideas una influencia más inmensa y más universal en más corazones que cualquiera otra clase de
mesianismo hubiese tenido. Jesús opto por el mas difícil y misterioso, pero verdadero, „camino de Dios‟. Al
final del relato se nos dice que, después de haber puesto a Jesús a prueba, el demonio “se marcho hasta otra
ocasión.” Esto implica un retorno, quizás en varias ocasiones, pero especialmente en momentos decisivos
como antes de ser arrestado en el jardín de Getsemaní y pasión. La „carta‟ del Nuevo Testamento a los
Hebreos nos dice que Jesús es capaz de sentir empatía con nuestra condición difícil y frágil como seres
humanos, porque fue tentado en muchas maneras, pero no peco (Hebreos 4:14-16). El relato de las
tentaciones nos demuestra la humanidad de Jesús y nos inspira en el quien es nuestro ejemplar y “pionero de
nuestra fe.” La Cuaresma nos ofrece la oportunidad para purificarnos en preparación para ser renovados. El
profeta Oseas, usando la imagen del desierto – lugar de pocas distracciones (no hay o no trabajan los teléfonos
celulares, iPads, computadoras, juegos de video, televisión, fiestas y tiendas de compras), y es un lugar de
dependencia en la providencia de Dios – se imaginaba a Dios atrayendo a su esposa infiel (el pueblo de Israel)
al desierto donde primeramente se habían convertido en el pueblo de Dios, para así renovarlos en la alianza de
amor: “Por eso, ahora voy a cautivarla: me la llevaré al desierto y le hablaré con ternura. Yo te haré mi esposa
para siempre, y te daré como dote el derecho y la justicia, el amor y la compasión. Te daré como dote mi
fidelidad, y entonces conocerás al SEÑOR” (Oseas 2:16; 20-22).
La lectura de hoy nos presenta una idea importante:
Los
cristianos son – como los primeros discípulos – llamados a asociarse
con la continua misión de Jesucristo en el mundo. Cada cristiano debe ir en
busca y descubrir las maneras en que puede participar en la vida y misión
de la Iglesia, y comprometerse con esa vida y misión.
Como
los primeros discípulos, también nosotros necesitamos dejar atrás
algo para poder seguir a Jesús mas completamente y auténticamente. Esto
varía de persona en persona. Quizás lo debemos dejar atrás podría ser el
confort, el control, el temor, la seguridad o la inseguridad, el resentimiento
y enojo, la indiferencia y apatía, los valores materiales, la complacencia, y
mucho mas. El resultado sería ser libres de lo que nos impide seguir a Jesús
– aunque sea algo bueno – para poder ser libres para seguirle y participar
en su misión.

Biblical Reflection: Lk 4:14-21
The unique and altogether singular even of the Incarnation of the Son
of God does not mean that Jesus Christ is part God and part man, nor
does it imply that he is the result of a confused mixture of the divine
and the human. He became truly man while remaining truly God.
Jesus Christ is true God and true man. During the first centuries, the
Church hqd to defend and clarify this truth of faith against the heresies
that falsified it. (CCC 464)
By embracing in his human heart the Father’s love for men, Jesus
“loved them to the end,” for “greater love has no man than this, that a
man lay down his life for his friends” (Jn 13,1; 15:13). In suffering
and death his humanity became the free and perfecgt instrument of his
divine love which desires the salvation of men. Indeed, out of love for
his Father and for men, whom the Father wants to save, Jesus freely
accepted the Passion and death: “No one takes my life from me, but I
lay it down on my own accord” (Jn 10:18). Hence the sovereign
freedom of God’s Son as he went out to his death. (CCC 609)
… The Resurrection above all constitutes the confirmation of all
Christ’s works and teachings. All truth even those more inaccessible to
human reason, find their justificationif Christ by his Resurrection has
given the definitive proof of his divine authority, which he had
promised. (CCC 651)
On Judgement Day at the end of the world, Christ will come in glory to
achieve the definitive triumph of good over evil whioch, like the wheat
and the tares, have grown up together in the course of history. (CCC
681)
The Son of God… worked with human hands, he thought with a
human mind. He acted with a human will, and with a human heart he
loved. Born of the Virgin Mary, he has truly been made one of us, like
to us in all things except sin. Gaudium et spes, 22,2. (CCC 470)
Questions for discussion:
 What words of Jesus have impacted me most?
 Which Jesus’ miracle I like most?
 If I would have the opportunity of meeting Jesus, what would I
have said to him? What would I have asked from Him?

Reflexión Bíblica: Lc 4, 14-21
El acontecimiento único y totalmente singular de la Encarnación del Hijo
de Dios no significa que Jesucristo sea en parte Dios y en parte hombre,
ni que sea el resultado de una mezcla confusa entre lo divino y lo
humano. Él se hizo verdaderamente hombre sin dejar de ser
verdaderamente Dios. Jesucristo es verdadero Dios y verdadero hombre.
La Iglesia debió defender y aclarar esta verdad de fe durante los primeros
siglos frente a unas herejías que la falseaban. (CIC 464)
Jesús al aceptar en su corazón humano el amor del Padre hacia los
hombres, “los amó hasta el extremo” (Jn 13,1) porque “nadie tiene mayor
amor que el que da la vida por sus amigos” (Jn 15,13). Tanto en el
sufrimiento como en la muerte, su humanidad se hizo el instrumento libre
y perfecto de su amor divino que quiere la salvación de los hombres…
En efecto aceptó libremente su pasión y su muerte por amor a su Padre y
a los hombres que el Padre quiere salvar: “Nadie me quita la vida, yo la
doy voluntariamente” (Jn 10,18). De aquí la soberana libertad del Hijo de
Dios cuando Él mismo se encamina hacia la muerte. (CIC 609)
…la Resurrección constituye ante todo la confirmación de todo lo que
Cristo hizo y enseñó. Todas las verdades, incluso las más inaccesible al
espíritu humano, encuentran su justificación si Cristo, al resucitar, ha
dado la prueba definitiva de su autoridad divina según lo había
prometido. (CIC 651)
El día del juicio, al fin del mundo, Cristo vendrá en la gloria para llevar a
cabo el triunfo definitivo del bien sobre el mal que como el trigo y la
cizaña, habrán crecido juntos en el curso de la historia. (CIC 681)
El hijo de Dios… trabajó con manos de hombre, pensó con inteligencia
de hombre, obró con voluntad de hombre, amó con corazón de hombre.
Nacido de la Virgen María, se hizo verdaderamente uno de nosotros, en
todo semejante a nosotros, excepto en el pecado. Gaudium et spes, 22,2.

 ¿Qué palabras de Jesús me han impactado más a mí?
 ¿Qué milagro de Jesús me atrae o me gusta más? ¿Por qué?
 Si yo hubiera tenido la oportunidad de conocer a Jesús, ¿qué le
habría dicho? ¿qué le hubiera pedido?
 ¿Hubiera sido yo capaz de seguir a Jesús hasta el pie de la cruz?
 En el silencio de tu corazón responde a esta pregunta… ¿Qué le
pedirías a Jesús en este momento de tu vida? Esta respuesta no es
para compartir con el grupo.
 ¿Crees que Jesús ha escuchado tu petición de la pregunta
anterior? Comparte tu fe y confianza en que Jesús te oye y te
tiende la mano para ayudarte.

with the Lord. Join the Prayer and Life Workshops!
The Prayer and Life Workshops are a form of a New
Evangelization, alive with a great positive vision on
living the Christian life. It offers a vibrant and vivid
presentation of Jesus, as well as relevant applications to
the needs of our present day. The Workshops’ emphasis
is on love’s transforming power rather than on fear and
punishment. It is a liberating and healing 15 weeks
Workshop made possible through the knowledge of God
and oneself. You will learn to progressively enter into a
personal relationship with the Lord by practicing a
different prayer method each week. It will guide you
from the simple steps of Prayerful Reading through the
depths of Contemplative Prayer.
These workshops will be offered at Our Lady of
Guadalupe Church, 11691 NW 25th St, Doral, Fl 33172,
Room #6 and will start on Wednesday, February 17 at
