Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of
heaven is at hand.” As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee,
he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his
brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were
fishermen. He said to them, “Come after me, and I will make
you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed
him. He walked along from there and saw two other
brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their
nets. He called them, and immediately they left their boat and
their father and followed him. He went around all of Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the
kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the
people.
Brief commentary on the Gospel
As with each liturgical cycle, the gospel readings of the first Sundays of
Ordinary Time (following the Nativity of the Lord) begin to trace the
basic narrative plot of the gospels. Following his baptism Jesus begins
his public ministry. The gospels concur that Jesus returned to Galilee in
the power of the Spirit, he began preaching in the synagogues,
proclaiming the ‘good news of the kingdom’ of God, and healing the
sick. Matthew aptly points to Isaiah’s grand vision that the once
humiliated region of Galilee would be the land where the ‘light of the
nations’ would arise for al l. For Matthew, Jesus is not only the true ‘king
of the Jews’, but as we witnessed with the epiphany to the foreign magi,
he has come to be the light of all peoples. At first Jesus comes to a
‘people sitting in darkness’, a mostly peasant people under the dominion
of Roman imperial might. Caring for them, he ‘cures the people of every
disease and illness among them’. In contrast to Roman dominance, he
announces a ‘kingdom’ of God imbued with justice and compassion, and
whose values Jesus would detail in teachings like the ones gathered in
Matthew’s ‘ser mon on the mount’. Jews had hoped for a great deliverer,
the messiah, who would liberate people from oppression and right the
wrongs in society. And many would- be messiahs had offered the people
some hope. But with Jesus something new happens, the kingdom is
revealed as something far more fundamentally interwoven in human
existence with the power to transform that existence. The kingdom is
much more far-reaching, more universal, more integrated in this world
than we think. Yet, the kingdom of God also transcends all social,
political and ec onomic systems; and to participate in it requires a new
openness by the people to God. And although Jesus will one day be
crowned with thorns to be ridiculed, it wou ld reveal that the God of the
Jews and of all the world has something far greater in mind than a
temporal earthly rule. Yet, Jes us does not venture into this great project
alone; instead, he enlists disciples from all walks of life. Men and women
begin to follow him and to become part of his expansive liberating and
life-giving movement. Today we read about the call his first
disciples – mostly fishermen who plied the waters of Lake Galilee – who
leave everything behind so as to follow him. At the beginning of this
liturgical year we too are called to leave behind whatever is preventing us
from following Jesus’ call with greater self-donation and boldness. At
the beginning of this year Jesus calls us to shine the light of God’s love
expressed in the gospel power to transform lives and the world. We are
to shine his light to the people today liv ing in the darknesses of sin and
death, drugs and violence, loneliness and despair, injustice and poverty.
In Matthew’s gospel Jesus will call his disciples to be the light of the
world. This year let us truly live in Christ, who is the light, so that we can
reflect his light for others.

Al enterarse Jesús de que
habían arrestado a Juan,
se retiró a Galilea.
Dejando Nazaret, se
estableció en Cafarnaúm,
junto al lago, en el
territorio de Zabulón y
Neftalí. Así se cumplió lo
que había dicho el profeta
Isaías: “País de Zabulón y
país de Neftalí, camino
del mar, al otro lado del
Jordán, Galilea de los
gentiles. El pueblo que habitaba en tinieblas vio una luz
grande; a los que habitaban en tierra y sombras de muerte,
una luz les brilló.” Entonces comenzó Jesús a predicar
diciendo: “Convertíos, porque está cerca el reino de los
cielos.” Pasando junto al lago de Galilea, vio a dos
hermanos, a Simón, al que llama Pedro, y a Andrés, su
hermano, que estaban echando el copo en el lago, pues eran
pescadores. Les dijo: “Venid y seguidme, y os haré
pescadores de hombres.” Inmediatamente dejaron las redes
y lo siguieron. Y, pasando adelante, vio a otros dos
hermanos, a Santiago, hijo de Zebedeo, y a Juan, que
estaban en la barca repasando las redes con Zebedeo, su
padre. Jesús los llamó también. Inmediatamente dejaron la
barca y a su padre y lo siguieron. Recorría toda Galilea,
enseñando en las sinagogas y proclamando el Evangelio del
reino, curando las enfermedades y dol encias del pueblo.
Reflexión Dominical
Así como con todo ciclo litúrgico, las lecturas del evangelio de los primeros domingos del Tiempo Ordinario
(siguiendo la Nav idad del Señor) comienzan a trazar el esquema narrativo básico de los evangelios. Siguiendo
su bautismo Jesús comenzó su ministeri o público. Los evangelio concurren que Jesús regreso a la Galilea en
el poder del Espíritu, comenzó a predicar en las sinagogas, proclamando la ‘buena nueva del reino’ de Dios, y
sano a los enfermos. Mateo aptamente recuerda la gran visión de Isaías que la antiguamente humillada region
de Galilea será la tierra donde la ‘luz de las naciones’ amanecerá. Para Mateo, Jesús no es solamente el
verdadero ‘rey de l os judíos’, pero como vimos con la epifanía a los forasteros, el es el que ha venido para ser
luz de todos los pueblos. Primeramente Jesús vino a ‘los que Vivian en tinieblas’, mayormente los pobres
bajo el dominio del imperio romano. Preocupado por ellos, el ‘los cura de toda enfermedad y aflicción’. En
contraste al dominio romano, el anuncia un ‘reino’ de Dios infundido con justicia y compasión, y cuyos
valores Jesús detalla con sus enseñanzas como las que Mateo colecta ‘el sermón de la montaña’. Los judíos
esperaban un gran liberador, el mesías, quien los liberara de la opresión y corrigiera los males en la sociedad.
Y muchos que se proclamaban candidatos mesiánicos habían ofrecido alguna esperanza al pueblo. Pero con
Jesús algo nuevo ocurre, y el reino es revelado como algo mucho más fundamentalmente trenzado en la
existencia humana con poder de transformar esa existencia. El reino es mucho más extendido y universal, y
más integrado en este mundo de lo que pensamos. Sin embargo, el reino de Dios transciende todo sistema
social, político y económico; y participar en el requiere una nueva apertura por el pueblo de Dios. Y aunque
Jesús un día seria coronado de espinas y ridiculizado, será revelado que el Dios de los judíos y de todo el
mundo tiene algo en mente mucho más grande que un reino terrenal temporal. Sin embargo, Jesús no se aven tura en este proyecto solo,
sino enlista discípulos de todas áreas de la sociedad. Hombres y mujeres le siguen y llegan a participar en su movimiento expansivo,
liberador y vivificante. Hoy leemos sobre el llamado a sus primeros discípulos – mayormente pescadores que surcaban las aguas del lago
de Galilea – quienes dejan todo para seguirlo. Al principio del año litúrgico también nosotros estamos llamados a dejar atrás todo lo que
nos inhibe seguir al llamado de Jesús más generosamente e intrepidez. Al principi o de este año Jesús nos llama brillar la luz del amor de
Dios expresado en el evidenciado en el poder transformador del evangelio en nuestras vidas y mundo . Hemos de brillar su luz a todos
viviendo en la oscuridad del pecado y la muerte, de las drogas y violencia, de la soledad y desesperanza, de la injusticia y pobreza. En el
evangelio de Mateo Jesús llama a sus discípulos a ser la luz del mundo. Este año vamos a vivir en Cristo, quien es la luz, para poder
reflejar su luz para los prójimos.
