Pastor’s Corner
F
irst of all, I want to welcome everyone to our 2016 Lomita Fair. I
hope that all, young and old, will enjoy the experience. Secondly, I want to thank our Lomita
Fair Board, the hundreds of volunteers and
thousands of participants—all who have made
this year’s Lomita Fair a great success. Thirdly,
last but certainly not least, I want to thank God
for the good weather and for His ever-watchful,
ever-merciful Divine Providence for providing
for our parish so beautifully over
the years.
Over the summer I took a
break from writing this weekly article, entrusting the task to our
own Fr. John Palmer for the
month of July and Fr. Marinello
Saguin for the month of August.
Would you believe that in my previous three years here at SMM I
wrote more than 150 articles?! I
was glad that my two brother
priests gave me a breather—they
did not disappoint with their wellwritten and inspiring articles.
Thanks guys! With this effort, I
will be writing this column once
again.
Having had a chance to reflect on life in
general and the current state of the world I
would like to offer you all, over the next month
or so, my reflections, of which the following is
the first:
Not only our weather, but our whole
world seems to have gone crazy. Who hasn’t
wondered recently whether some suicidal madness has seized our times? We act against our
own best interest. We are contracepting and
aborting our future, breaking faith with the past,
and killing each other and poisoning ourselves
in the present.
We seem to disdain nature’s laws and
God’s revelation. If we heed no warnings
whether human or divine, we may well wonder
how human history can possibly avoid a tragic
ending. Thinking such thoughts, we might be
tempted to ask, “Is it time to despair yet?” In
other words, is it time for us to just throw up our
hands and surrender to our fate? The short answer is, “No.”
We live in a fallen world, that is, the
same old fallen world as ever. By
that answer I don’t mean to say,
“Cheer up! It’s not that
bad!” ,because I really think it is that
bad. But, truth to tell, it’s always
been that bad. Since our first
parent’s banishment from Eden,
there has been an unbridgeable
gap between us and the good that
God made us for—which is Himself.
But there is a reason for our HOPE,
which we will reflect upon next
week.
One last thing, this is the anniversary of 9/11. Let us never forget all
our brothers and sisters who lost
their lives that day. May our Merciful
God protect us and guide us as a
nation during this Year of Mercy.

Our 48 pilgrims all arrived home safely from our pilgrimage to World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland. The journey was long but we

THIS WEEK IN SMM HISTORY
September 13,1950 - St. Margaret Mary School officially opens with 207 students. Because of a carpenter's strike, the building was not finished. For
four months, schools was held in the church, the
rectory backyard and parishioners living rooms.
September 15, 1968 - The parish bid farewell to
Sister Rita, who served the parish and school a
record eleven years as school teacher, CCD
teacher and principal.
September 15, 1987 - 550 parishioners attended
Mass in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum celebrated by Pop John Paul II. Parishioners also volunteered throughout the Pope’s two day visit, including singing in the choir.
Thanks to our Volunteers, Donors and Parishioners for this past year's support. We also remember our long time assistant with making our
schedules, Ted Lising who went to the Lord. Nora
we share your loss.
We will close in September for inventory. Please
return those DVD's you put off or forgot to get

ACCW Southwestern District Meeting
The Southwestern District of the Archdiocesan
Council of Catholic Women will have a District
Meeting on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at St.
James Church 415 Vincent St (PCH & Vincent)
Redondo Beach in Kavanaugh Hall, next door to
the Church.
The day begins at 9;30 with Registration and Refreshments. The meeting begins at 10:00 Guest
Speaker will be Linda Montoya, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Her subject is
“Responding to Adult Children who are not Practicing their Catholic Faith”. Following the speaker, we will have Mass at 12.00 in the Church.
Immediately following Mass, Luncheon will be
served in the Hall. The meeting adjourns at
about 2:00 P.M.

LA TERNURA DE DIOS Y LA GRANDEZA DE SU PERDON

El evangelio de hoy nos cuenta las tres conocidas parábolas de la misericordia de Dios: la oveja perdida, la moneda extraviada y el hijo prodigo. Las tres parábolas llaman e invitan a la alegría porque Dios es tan bueno que está dispuesto a perdonarlo todo. Historias como las contenidas en estas parábolas nos suceden a nosotros
con frecuencia: se nos pierden las cosas; hijos
que se salen de su casa, a veces por culpa de los
papás; nosotros parecemos andar perdidos en
nuestros negocios, enredos, mentiras, sentimientos e ideas; necesitamos que Dios nos busque y nos encuentre.
Todos necesitamos conversión y perdón. Los
cristianos somos especialmente afortunados
porque pedimos perdón no a un Dios enojado
sino a un Dios que por amor a su Hijo Jesús tiene tanta prisa por perdonarnos que no quiere
escuchar excusas ni razonamiento. Este amor
de Dios se nos reveló en Jesús que nos amó tanto que abrió sus brazos y murió por nosotros en
una cruz. Como alguien dijo, la grandeza del
cristianismo y de una iglesia, se mide por los
brazos abiertos que tiene.
El padre bueno de la parábola recibe a su hijo
arrepentido sin imponerle condiciones o restricciones, como con frecuencia lo hacemos nosotros.
El hijo pródigo tuvo la suerte de tener un padre
tan bueno; tuvo suerte hasta cuando las cosas
fueron mal y quedo hambriento, ya que si hubiera prosperado materialmente, lejos de la casa
de su padre, quizás jamás se hubiera arrepentido y no hubiera regresado a su casa. Aquel joven tuvo todavía mayor suerte al no haberse encontrado con su hermano mayor, antes de llegar
a la casa paterna. Este hermano mayor (como
quizás muchos de nosotros
y cristianos
“devotos”) seguramente le hubiera echado en
cara y recriminado su pasado, y acusándolo, insultándolo y amenazándolo con la ira de su padre (¡Ya verás lo que te va a decir tu padre, prepárate!) de modo que podría haber quitado las
ganas de volver a su casa. Aquel padre bueno no
quería ni esperaba nada de su hijo, ya que solamente quería y esperaba al hijo a quien nunca
había dejado de recordar y amar cada día, y al
que vio regresar aún cuando el hijo estaba lejos
de la casa. El hijo menor tampoco había perdido
la memoria, y aquel recuerdo de la casa paterna
fue lo que lo movió a volver.
El hijo menor regresó porque se moría de hambre; el hermano mayor, el obediente y rutinario fariseo se moría de rabia porque no entendía
nada del amor y del perdón paterno. El padre,
que había esperado con paciencia al hijo menor,
tuvo que salir a invitar al mayor, al verdadero
rebelde, para abrirle los ojos para que viera la
situación como la veía su padre, para que se
uniera a la fiesta de toda la familia.
El hijo pródigo, en cuanto hombre sin ley pero
sensible a lo injusto, es figura de pecadores y
paganos; el hermano mayor endurecido, en
cuanto hombre observante y escrupuloso pero
carente de misericordia, representa a los fariseos; y el padre misericordioso es, naturalmente, Dios, la figura principal de la parábola, seguida por el hermano mayor y finalmente, la del
hijo pródigo. Los tres tienen actitudes distintas.
El hijo menor reconoce su error, el hermano
mayor condena a su hermano, y el padre derrocha alegría con acogida, el banquete y la fiesta.
En resumen el evangelio de hoy nos habla de la
alegría del retorno a Dios. El Señor nos presenta
dos ejemplos. Uno es el del pastor que está tan
feliz cuando encuentra a una oveja extraviada.
El otro es el de una mujer que se pone a gritar
de contenta porque dio con una moneda que
había perdido. La alegría de ese pastor y de esa
mujer nos dicen algo de la alegría de Dios cuando volvemos a él.
Reflexión
Nuestro mundo sigue lleno de personas que se
consideran perdidas, y siempre hay alguien que
las está esperando; es necesario que nos preocupemos por ellas para que vuelvan a entrar con
nosotros en la casa de nuestro Padre

Registration for 2016-2017
Classes begin Saturday, September 24th, 2016
The Religious Education Office is currently accepting registration for new and returning students
preparing to receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation/First Communion. Registration forms
can be picked up and returned to the Religious
Education office when completed.
The completed form, and a copy of the child's
Baptismal certificate are required.

SMM YOUNG AT ♥ CLUB
Catholic Seniors age 50 plus:
ARCHDIOCESAN CULTURES MASS
The annual Archdiocesan Cultures Mass will be celebrated
on Sunday, September 17th at 9:30am
at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels
The theme of this years celebra on is,
“God’s Mercy Unites All People”
Each year this celebra on reminds us that all races of the
world from one human race is Jesus Christ, that we are all
brother and sisters and children of God.
Men, Women, Married, Single,
Widowed or Divorced
Young at hearts 50+, married, single, divorced - all
are welcome. Come, bring a friend and be a part of
our active 50+ community. We meet the first and
third Saturday of the month at 6:30pm in the Parish Center Lounge.
We are planning to go on a Sunday Brunch and a 2harbor cruise (Long Beach and San Pedro) on Sunday, 9/18 at 10am. Reservations are required by
Thursday 9/15.
