GETTING AWAY FROM IT ALL
PART 2
A
s I mentioned in last week’s bulletin, we occasionally need to get away from our normal routine in our spiritual life so that we don’t become bored, tired, or stuck doing the same thing
for months or years without any variation. Trying something new (such as attending a religious
conference or going on a retreat) can refresh us, and give us renewed vigor and energy. We are
blessed because there are many Catholic conferences and retreats in Southern California for us to
participate in.
or example, Mary & Joseph Retreat Center in Rancho Palos Verdes offers many retreats
and conferences, including: (1) a conference on August 29 called “A Pattern of Love and Forgiveness” with Cheryl Wunsch, who shares her faith journey to forgive the man who murdered her
mother; (2) a retreat on September 19 that teaches participants how to use a labyrinth for contemplative prayer; (3) a retreat on September 26 called “Discovering the Landscape of Your Soul”; (4)
a weekend healing retreat from 7 pm on October 2 to 1:30 pm on October 4 called “Blessing &
Burden” with Fr. Michael Barry; (5) a conference on October 4 called “Faith Support on Our Cancer Journey” with Sr. Laura Gormley; (6) a retreat on October 17 called “SoulCore Experience,”
which pairs core-strengthening exercise with reflection on the life of Christ through the prayers of
the rosary; and (7) a conference/retreat on October 31 called “Centering Prayer: An Introduction
and An Experience.” To register or obtain more information, go to www.maryjoseph.org or call
310-377-4867.
ther Catholic retreat and conference centers include: (1) Sacred Heart Retreat House in
Alhambra (www.sacredheartretreathouse.com; 626-289-1353); (2) Holy Spirit Retreat
Center in Encino (www.hsrcenter.com; 818-784-4515); (3) Serra Retreat Center in Malibu
(serraretreat.com; 310-456-6631); and (4) Loyola Institute for Spirituality in Orange
(www.loyolainstitute.org; 714-997-9587), which has both English- and Spanish-language programs. Please visit the websites or call the telephone numbers for more information about specific programs and offerings.
inally, the biggest annual Catholic conference in the world is the Los Angeles Religious
Education Congress, which will be held February 25, 2016 (Youth Day) & February 26-28,
2016 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim. The Congress will offer over 300 workshops
(in both English and Spanish), 18 liturgy and prayer experiences, lunchtime entertainment and
evening concerts, a film showcase, over 265 exhibitors, Sacred Space, Art Exhibit, live Internet
Arena events, and so much more. The Registration Guidebook, which will list all of the speakers,
workshops, liturgies, and the complete daily schedule, will be available in mid-October. To register or receive a Guidebook when it is available, please go to www.recongress.org and click on the
“Register” tab; or call 213-637-7348.
n the coming months, why not try something new by participating in a Catholic conference or
retreat? Doing so may lead to unexpected graces and blessings, including the renewal of your
spiritual life.

ALEJÁNDOSE DE TODO (PARTE 2)
C

Visiting the Holy Land
The Church of the
Transfiguration
Mt. Tabor
We celebrate the Feast of the
Transfiguration on
Thursday. Though biblical
scholars question whether or
not Mt. Tabor is the actual
site of the Transfiguration, a
succession of churches and a
monastery were built here
from the 4th century. Mt. Tabor is mentioned in Hebrew
Scripture, but is not named
in the New Testament.
The present buildings were
constructed in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries.
The Catholic Church of the
Transfiguration stands
among ruins of a Benedictine
monastery. Its entrance is
flanked by chapels dedicated
to Moses and Elijah. The
Transfiguration is depicted
above the main altar in the
central apse.
FAITH SHARING MEETING
August 13th 7:00-9:00 PM
In the Gospel of John, Jesus proclaimed, “I am the living bread…
whoever eats this bread will live forever.” Imagine the crowd’s
confusion as they questioned, “How can this man give us his
flesh to eat?”
Today, as Catholics, we almost take those words spoken by Jesus
for granted. Not in a bad way. We have the advantage of the
New Testament and 2000 years of church doctrine to help us
understand their meaning. But do we truly understand their
meaning?
How deeply do you embrace the Real Presence of Jesus in the
Eucharist?
Share your thoughts and listen to those of others at our next
Faith Sharing meeting in the Saint Margaret Mary Parish Center. We’ll reflect upon the readings for the Twentieth Sunday in
Ordinary Time:
Proverbs 9:1-6
Ephesians 5:15-20
John 6:51-58
To confirm your attendance and for the meeting location, call or email
Roy and Carole Hardinge at 310-539-6027 or [email protected].
Don’t miss this opportunity to share your faith journey with others!
Mark your calendars today!
GOD'S WORD TODAY
Today we hear a continuation of the "Bread of Life Discourse" from
the sixth chapter of John's Gospel. We should try to place ourselves
once again in the crowd that has been following the Lord. They just
experienced the astounding miracle of the loaves and fishes. The Lord
tells them that the bread of God will give life to the world. We can imagine ourselves being inspired by this saying and prompted to respond
as Jesus' followers did: "Sir, give us this bread always." Isn't this the
real motivation behind coming to Mass week in and week out? Here,
we find the very presence of Christ--in the word and in the Eucharist.
Here we find the bread of life. Here we find the One who promises that
whoever comes to him will never hunger and will never thirst. Let us
allow this reality to sink in today as the word of God comes alive in our
presence.

OUR FAITH IN ACTION
August 7
A Message from Archbishop José H. Gomez
I would like to share with you two announcements made by
the Holy See this week of great importance to our Archdiocese. First, Pope Francis has accepted the retirement of Bishop Gerald Wilkerson, Auxiliary Bishop for the San Fernando
Pastoral Region, upon reaching the retirement age for bishops, which is 75 years old.
Bishop Wilkerson has been serving the Archdiocese of Los
Angeles as a priest for 50 years, and as a bishop since 1998.
He has fulfilled his ministry with zeal and dedication, and we
are very grateful for the many things he has done for the people of God in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. We are also
grateful because we know that even in his retirement, his
health and energy will allow him to continue his ministry
among us.
The Holy Father has also named Msgr. Joseph V. Brennan
and Msgr. David O’Connell from our Archdiocese along with
Father Robert Barron from the Archdiocese of Chicago as
auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. It is with
great joy that we welcome the announcement of our three new
auxiliary bishops. I believe each of them will help us in our
mission here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles — the beautiful mission we have of sharing the love of God and the message of Jesus Christ and promoting human dignity and mercy
and justice in our society.
The Archdiocese has created a special webpage with information on the announcement of our new auxiliary bishops,
including the video of the presentation of the bishops-elect,
their statements and special articles from The Tidings. I invite
you to visit this page at http://archla.org/20150721.
Please join me in praying for them.

PRAYER
Descriptions of prayer
are abundant throughout
Christian history. “True
prayer,” wrote St. Augustine, “is nothing but love.”
Prayer should arise from
the heart. “Prayer,” said St.
John Vianney, “is the inner
bath of love into which the
soul plunges itself.”
“Everyone of us needs
half an hour of prayer each
day,” remarked St. Francis
de Sales, “except when we
are busy—then we need an
hour.” Definitions of prayer are important, but insufficient. There is a huge difference between knowing
about prayer and praying.
On this issue, the Rule of
St. Benedict is clear, “If a
man wants to pray, let him
go and pray.”

PROTEGIENDO July
A NUESTROS
a crecer.

PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN
Children and internet: tips for the summer
Summer vacation is here and time away from
school could mean extra time online for children—a lot of it happening when you’re not
there to supervise. Here are some tips to help
keep children safe. 1.Talk to children about internet predators and whether they have ever
been approached online. 2.Keep the computer
in a common area of the home. 3.Establish
rules for when children are allowed to use their
cell phone.

In light of the recent revelations concerning the disturbing activities
relating to Planned Parenthood, it is important to support those
involved in Pro Life with greater fervor. It was revealed by a leader
of Planned Parenthood that she intended to profit, at the expense of
unborn innocent lives, in order to obtain a “Lamborghini.”
A babies life is priceless in the eyes of God.
