The threat of gossip
The tongue, tittle-tattle and gossip are a weapons that threaten the human
community every day, sowing envy. jealousy and the longing for power.
With these one can even reach the point of killing a person. Therefore talking
about peace also means thinking of all the evil one can do with one’s tongue.
Resuming his custom of celebrating Mass in the Chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae the morning of Monday 2 September, in his homily Pope Francis proposed a profound reflection.
The Pope draw inspiration from the narrative of Jesus’ return to Nazareth as it is told in Luke (4:16-30) in one
of the most “dramatic” Gospel passages in which, the Pontiff said, “we can see what our soul is like”, and how
the wind makes it turn from one side to another. In Nazareth the Pope explained, “all were waiting for Jesus. They all wanted to meet him. And he went to meet his people. He was returning to his village for the first
time and they were waiting for Jesus because they had heard of all he had done in Capernaum, the miracles.
And when the ceremony began, as usual they asked the guest to read the Book. Jesus did so and read the Book
of the Prophet Isaiah which was more or less a prophecy about him, and it was for this reason that he ended
his reading with the words: ‘today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’”
The first reaction, the Pope explained, was really lovely, they all appreciated him. Then, however, the worm
of envy began to gnaw at someone’s mind and he began to say, “but where did this man study? Is not this Joseph’s son? And we all know who he is related to. But what university did he study in?” And they began to
clamour for him to do a miracle: only then would they believe. “They wanted”, the Pontiff explained, “a spectacle. ‘Work a miracle and we will all believe in you!’. But Jesus is not a performing artist.”
However Jesus did not work any miracles in Nazareth. On the contrary he stressed the little faith of those who
asked for a “spectacle”. They were all so angry”, Pope Francis noted, “that they stood up and led Jesus to the
brow of the hill that they might thrown him down headlong and kill him”. What had begun joyfully threatened
to end with a crime, the killing of Jesus “out of jealousy, out of envy.” Yet this was not only something that
happened 2,000 years ago, the Bishop of Rome pointed out. “It happens every day”, he said, “in our heart, in
our communities”, whenever we welcome someone speaking well of him the first day and then ever worse of
him, until we descend to such gossip as almost to “banish him”. The person in a community who spreads rumors against a brother ends by wanting to kill him”, the Pope emphasized. “The Apostle John”, the Pope said,
“in chapter 3 of his First Letter, in verse 15, tells us this: anyone who hates his brother is a murderer”. And the
Pope immediately added: “we are used to gossip, to the spread of rumors”, and we often transform our communities as well as our family into “hell” where this kind of crime that leads “to killing one’s brother and sister with one’s tongue is manifest.”
“The Bible”, the Pope continued, “says that the devil came into the world through envy. A community, a family, is destroyed by this envy that the devil teaches in the heart and causes one to speak ill of the other”. And
referring to what has been happening in these days, he stressed the need to think also of our own daily weapons: “the tongue, gossip, tittle-tattle.”
So how should a community be built? the Pope asked himself. “Like heaven”, he answered; just as the word
of God proclaims: “the voice of the Archangel comes, the sound of God’s trumpet, the day of the Resurrection. And after this he says: 'And so we shall be with the Lord for ever’”. Therefore, “in order that there may
be peace in a community, in a family, in a country, in the world, we must start by being with the Lord. And
where the Lord is there is no envy, there is no crime, there is no jealousy; there is brotherhood. Let us ask this
of the Lord: never to kill our neighbor with our tongue, and to be with the Lord just as we shall all be in heaven.”

"Donde está Dios
no hay odio,
envidia o celos"
Tras un descanso en verano el 2 de septiembre el Papa
Francisco volvió a celebrar la Eucaristía con los grupos en
la Capilla de la Casa de Santa Marta. El Santo Padre ha
dicho que "donde está Dios no hay odio, envidia o celos y
no hay conversaciones que matan a los hermanos".
El encuentro de Jesús con sus compatriotas, los habitantes
de Nazaret, como lo relata el Evangelio de San Lucas
propuesto por la liturgia del día, ha sido la parte central de
la homilía del Papa. Los nazarenos admiran a Jesús –
observa el Pontífice- pero esperan de él algo asombroso:
“querían un milagro, querían un espectáculo” para creer en
él. Así Jesús dice que no tienen fe y “ellos se enfadan mucho. Se levantaron y empujaron a Jesús hasta el monte para
despeñarlo, para matarlo”:
“Pero mirad como cambió la cosa: comenzaron con belleza,
con admiración, y terminan con un crimen: queriendo
asesinar a Jesús. Esto es por celos, por envidia, todas estas
cosas… Esto no es algo que pasó solo hace dos mil años.
Esto sucede cada día en nuestros corazones, en nuestras
comunidades. Cuando en una comunidad se dice: ‘Qué bien
este que ha venido nuevo’ Se habla bien de él el primer día,
el segundo no tanto; el tercero se comienza a murmurar y
se termina despellejándolo”. Así los nazarenos “querían
asesinar a Jesús”.
“Los que en una comunidad hablan de los hermanos, de los
miembros de la comunidad, quieren matar: ¡lo mismo que
estos! El Apóstol Juan, en la primera lectura, cap III,
versículo 15c, dice esto: ‘el que odia en su corazón a su
hermano, es un homicida’. Estamos acostumbrados a los
cotilleos, a las murmuraciones. Pero ¡cuántas veces nuestras
comunidades, incluso nuestra familia, son un infierno
donde se da esta criminalidad de matar al hermano y a la
hermana con la lengua!”.
“Una comunidad, una familia –prosiguió el Papa- es
destruida por esta envidia, que siembra el diablo en nuestro
corazón y hace que uno hable mal del otro, y así se
destruya”. “En estos días –destacó- estamos hablando
mucho de la paz”. Vemos a las víctimas de las armas, pero
es necesario pensar también nuestras armas cotidianas: “la
lengua, los cotilleos, las murmuraciones”. Cada comunidad
–concluyó el Papa- debe vivir con el Señor y estar “como
en el Cielo”.
“Para que se dé la paz en una comunidad, en una familia, en
un país, en el mundo, debemos comenzar así: estando con
el Señor. Donde está el Señor no hay envidia, no hay
criminalidad, no hay odio, no hay celos. Hay hermandad.
Pidamos esto al Señor: nunca matemos al prójimo con la
lengua, que estemos con el Señor como estaremos en el
Cielo. Que así sea.”

SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS
On August 14th, students and families were welcomed back to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary School by
attending the 5:00PM Mass with Father Abner and the St. Genevieve School Choir. After Mass, Father
blessed the OLHR faculty and staff. Principal Sister Remedios reminded everyone that we were on the
eve of the feast of our Holy Lady and that Mass was in honor of the Holy Spirit and we should ask for this
blessing. Also, that if we keep God as the center of our lives,
then everything else will fall into place. After Mass, students then
went to meet their teachers for the 2013-2014 year as Father
Abner visited each classroom to bless the OLHR school

ANUNCIOS DE LA ESCUELA PARROQUIAL
El 14 de agosto, los estudiantes y sus familiares fueron recibidos en
Nuestra Señora del Santo Rosario asistiendo a una misa
especial a las 5:00pm con el Padre Abner y el coro de la escuela
de Sta. Genoveva. Después de la misa el Padre bendijo a los
profesores y empleados. La Directora quien es la Hermana Remedios recordó a todos los presentes que
estábamos en la víspera de la fiesta de Nuestra Madre Santísima y que la misa era en honor del Espíritu
Santo el cual deberíamos pedir su bendición. También agrego que si mantenemos a Dios como el centro
de nuestras vidas todo lo demás caerá en su lugar. Después de la misa los estudiantes fueron a conocer
a sus maestros para el año 2013-2014 mientras el Padre Abner visitaba cada clase para bendecir a las
familias de la escuela parroquial.
