ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA www.stleofairfax.com Dear Friends, When Jesus came as Man, he did not present to the world a book. Rather, he spoke a word of invitaon, “Come follow me”. Throughout the Gospels the Lord invites people to gather around him. This “gathering” is the origin of the word “church”. In its most basic meaning, “church” is simply the community of persons, invited by the Lord, gathered as one around him living his life by grace and connuously being transformed by grace. The Church is also instuonal. It is necessarily so. From the earliest moments of the Lord’s preaching and gathering, the community he formed had to deal with the praccal realies of living as one in relaonship with each other and with him. The Gospels relate, for example, that it was Judas who kept the “purse” and acted as treasurer (I wish I could come up with a more inspiring example right now). St. Paul frequently and more clearly is concerned with the proper ordering of the Chrisan family - the Church - as it follows Jesus as is evidenced in much of his wring. For the common good and for the sancficaon of each member, each follower of Jesus had received a special and parcular roll to play in service to the others. One such roll of service was that of “teacher”. The Lan word for “teacher” is “magister” which is the origin of the word “magisterium”. The words of Jesus to his Apostles, “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven” were recognized immediately by the early Chrisan community as the Lord giving to the Apostles and to those who followed them, the responsibility of teaching authoritavely. In the Acts of the Apostles we see the Apostles deciding not only quesons of the irreformable essence of the Chrisan faith but also making praccal judgments regarding ways of living which, while not seen as definive for all me, were nevertheless to be adhered to for the good of the community. From the beginning, faith in Jesus was inseparable from the acons of living in community with other men and women of faith. I will connue this next week but I want to conclude for now with a couple of quotes from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. “The Magisterium of the Pastors of the Church in moral ma.ers is ordinarily exercised in catechesis and preaching, with the help of the works of theologians and spiritual authors. Thus from generaon to generaon, September 15, 2013 under the aegis and vigilance of the pastors, the ‘deposit’ of Chrisan moral teaching has been handed on, a deposit composed of a characterisc body of rules, commandments, and virtues proceeding from faith in Christ and animated by charity. Alongside the Creed and the Our Father, the basis for this catechesis has tradionally been the Decalogue (The Ten Commandments) which sets out the principles of moral life valid for all men.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #2036) “The law of God entrusted to the Church is taught to the faithful as the way of life and truth. The faithful therefore have the right to be instructed in the divine saving precepts that purify judgment and, with grace, heal wounded human reason. They have the duty of observing the constuons and decrees conveyed by the legimate authority of the Church. Even if they concern disciplinary ma.ers, these determinaons call for docility in charity.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #2037) In Christ, Rev. David A. Whitestone, Pastor Welcome Home Are you, or someone you know, questioning or struggling to accept some aspect of Church teachings? Are you unable to participate in the Sacraments of the Church? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for bringing into the Catholic Church both those who have never been baptized and those who were baptized in a non-Catholic church. RCIA is also the best way for adult Catholics who have never been confirmed to prepare for the final Sacrament of Initiation. Every September, a new RCIA class begins at St. Leo the Great and we invite any adult who would like to join the Catholic Church, be confirmed, or who is simply interested in learning about the teachings and customs of Catholic Christianity to come and join us. While classroom work is part of the process, RCIA is more than a class; it is a gradual introduction to the customs, beliefs, practices, and devotions of Catholicism. There is no obligation, only an opportunity to learn! RCIA meets on Tuesdays from 7:30pm - 9:00pm in the Guadalupe Room beginning on September 17.
