ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH
FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA

Dear Friends,
Many of the issues we face as both cizens and
members of the Church are complex and o!en contenous.
One such issue is immigraon. Each of us is called to reflect
upon the teaching of the Church concerning the rights and
obligaons of individuals and the “State” and to apply,
according to conscience, those teachings to the parcular
realies of a given place and me. This is o!en a messy
process since, while the teaching of the Church may be more
or less clear, the reading of the current real situaon in
society is open to mulple interpretaons. At this me I
simply wish to present paragraph 2241 of the Catechism of
the Catholic Church in the interest of promong sincere
reflecon on the part of people of faith and good will.
Minimal commentary on my part other than stang that we
need to read the text in its enrety. Perhaps it is the “canon
lawyer” in me that is sensive to the balancing of "rights and
dues and obligaons" as well the “theologian” that is very
aware that the embracing of one aspect of the truth to the
exclusion of another dimension of the truth leads to heresy.
"The more prosperous naons are obliged, to the extent they
are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security
and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his
country of origin. Public authories should see to it that the
natural right is respected that places a guest under the
protecon of those who receive him.
Polical authories, for the sake of the common
good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise
of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical
condions, especially with regard to the immigrants' dues
toward their country of adopon. Immigrants are obliged to
respect with gratude the material and spiritual heritage of
the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist
in carrying civic burdens."
What do these words from the catechism mean?
How do we understand them? How do we begin to apply
them to the concrete situaon of this me and this place?
Men and women of good will can and do come to different
conclusions in arculang parcular policies. We all need to
respect that. To be completely honest, we need to completely
honest – there is no one “Catholic” answer which is binding
upon the consciences of all the faithful. Our bishops and
other members of the clergy are engaged in the same
dynamic process as all the faithful when they consider this
and other issues. While we are called to consider their
judgments concerning the praccal applicaon of the faith
with a sincere openness, their praccal prudenal judgments
are not binding on the consciences of the faithful. What is
binding is that we make these praccal policy decisions
always from the perspecve of faith and in conformity with
September 27, 2015
the teachings of Christ and always at the very same me with
a respect for those whose conclusions differ from those of our
own.
In Christ,

is a process for bringing into the Catholic Church both
those who have never been baptized & those who were
baptized in a non-Catholic church. RCIA is also the way
for adult Catholics who have never been confirmed to
prepare for the final Sacrament of Initiation, Confirmation.
Every September, a new RCIA process begins at St. Leo.
We invite any adult who would like to join the Catholic
Church, be confirmed, or who is simply interested in
learning about the teachings and customs of Catholic
Christianity to come and join us. While classes are part of
the process, RCIA is more than a class; it is a gradual
introduction to the customs, beliefs, practices, and
devotions of Catholicism. There is no obligation, only an
opportunity to learn! RCIA meets on Tuesdays, from
7:30-9 pm in the Guadalupe Room.
Adult Confirmation Adults who wish to receive the
Sacrament of Confirmation need to attend the RCIA
classes on Tuesday evenings. Classes have begun and
will continue through March, 2016. Adult Confirmation will
take place at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in
Arlington, on May 14 & 15, 2016.
For more information about any of the above, please contact
