September 30, 2012
Dear Friends,
In a li&le over a month we will go to the polls to
elect our naonal and state leaders. It is a moral
imperave for every Catholic to seriously consider the
issues facing our naon and state in light of the teaching of
Jesus Christ. True discipleship does not permit a
compartmentalizaon of God’s truth from our human
experience and civic responsibility.
The Virginia Catholic Conference is offering on its
website a voter educaon document, “Civic Responsibility:
A Resource for Catholics in Virginia.” The two-sided, easyto- print document contains excerpts from a two-page
summary of the U.S. bishop’s November 2007 statement
Forming Consciences for Faithful Cizenship. This resource,
available at, includes seven key
themes of Catholic social teaching that should guide
Catholics as they ponder their role in public policy
decisions. In the coming weeks, the Conference will also
distribute other materials to help Catholics pracce faithful
cizenship, including “Know the Posions of the
Presidenal Candidates,” a side-by-side look at the two
major party candidates on 10 issues important to Catholic;
a 10-queson response chart to the Conference’s survey of
Virginia’s two U.S. senatorial candidates; and a preelecon le&er by Bishop Loverde and Richmond bishop,
Francis DiLorenzo highlighng the importance of many
issues, the differences in moral gravity among issues, and
the call to parcipate in the polical process. All resources
will be available at
I want to remind all individuals and groups that it is
Any persons doing so will be
considered to be trespassing and appropriate acon will be
taken. Addionally, all literature le@ in Church regarding
the elecons and any and all voter guides of any kind must
be approved by me before hand. The only materials which
I permit to be placed in the Church are those published by
the Virginia Catholic Conference and the United Stated
Conference of Catholic Bishops – there are no excepons
at all to this rule.
As we get closer to Elecon Day, emoons, which
tend to be inflamed during any campaign season, will
perhaps be even more so this year due to the
unprecedented seriousness of the issues facing our naon.
Recognizing this, it is important to remain rooted in Christ

through prayer, respecul of the consciences of others,
and obedient to the parameters set by our Bishops
regarding the Church’s obligaon to present her moral
teaching, to make judgments concerning current issues
concerning the fundamental rights of all persons and their
sacred dignity, and at the same me not to endorse
parcular candidates.
