FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK – DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PARROCO “Joseph’s need for reassurance that the child was the fruit of the Holy Spirit doesn’t diminish his fatherhood but rather enhances it as ‘You must name him Jesus, because He is the One who is to save His people from their sins’ (Mt 1:21). In other words, thanks to his extraordinary fatherhood he, himself accepted and permitted the realization of God’s promise to reside amongst His people. Joseph’s great faith helps us to comprehend that faith assumes a new importance in the most intimate things that belong to us. We are reminded today that everyone of us has received our ‘apostolic mission’ to ‘obtain the obedience of faith’, and to profess our faith in Jesus Christ (cf Rm1:1-7). In all of these events we see the great mission that Mary undertook as a privileged instrument in the hands of God. It is thanks to her that God found His home amongst men, as she became that first resting place of the Word: ‘Today O Mary you became the book in which our rule is described. In you today is written the wisdom of the Eternal Father.... O Mary, my sweetest love, in you is written the Word, from whom we have life’s doctrine. You are the table on which that doctrine rests. I see this Word that is written in you, who is not without the holy desire of the cross. Immediately that he was delivered to you, the desire of dying for the health of men, for whom he was incarnated, was grafted and placed in Him.’” (St Catherine of Siena) (Excerpt from Advent and Christmas by Jennifer Gregory Miller and Darden Brock) These two paragraphs capture the spirit of Advent and Christmas. ARE YOU THINKING OF A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR YOUR PARISH THIS YEAR? This is how you can help: As we approach our Centennial, 100 years of grace and tradition, we would like to beautify and preserve the legacy we have received, both in the church built of stones and the living church, which is us. We have at least two main projects at hand: the Sanctuary Project –altar and sanctuary floor- that is underway. There’s an architect working on it at this time, and we have already received a couple of donations and saved some money towards it. We will have more details soon. The second important project is our STAIN GLASS WINDOWS. They are original and amazingly beautiful but are not in good shape. Yes, it is a big project to undertake, but before they shatter on us we need to do something about it. The whole project is expensive but we can start now with your help! I have sought approval from the Art and Environment Committee from the Diocsese of San Jose and have also worked with three companies to give us estimates. The good news is that we will start the project to have three of the stain glass windows repaired, which costs about US$ 24, 000. I have enough money for two at this time, but we count on your generosity to make it to three or four. The more windows we do at once the less expensive it will be. The south wall on West San Fernando Street is the worst, and the water from rain coming in is damaging the building as you can see, therefore we will start on that side. If a family wants to adopt a window –about US $ 8, 000-, or half a window, their names will be on a plaque under that window. All other donors’ names will be placed on a larger plaque in the church. If you feel you can help at any level, please, make your checks during the month of December payable to St Leo the Great Church. Memo: Stain Glass Window Project. You can place your check in the collection baskets, mail them or bring them to the parish office. We are also working on a matching grant through a local institution. HELP US MAKE SAINT LEO LOOK AS BEAUTIFUL AS IT CAN BE. GOD BLESS YOU. LaserCom Express Cover Page ST. LEO THE GREAT SAN JOSE, CALIF.
