children safe
this Fourth of
July weekend

Fourth of July weekend is al­
ways special when it comes to
making memories with loved
ones; however, it is important
to remain safe when doing so.
La Prensa recently spoke to
Dr. Sebrina Perkins, a pediatric
emergency doctor at Method­
ist Children’s Hospital, who
shared a few valuable tips to
keep children away from the
emergency room during the
festive holiday.
Sun safety. Heatstrokes are
especially common amongst
children in the summer so it is
best to limit the amount of sun
between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
“We have already had children
from the Fiesta parade come
in with a heatstroke,” said Dr.
Perkins. “At any point, you
want to have the head covered
and protect their feet from
sunburn.

As America celebrates 240
years of freedom, La Prensa
celebrates 27 years of distrib­
uting a bilingual newspaper
to the San Antonio com­
munity.
La Prensa de San
Antonio cel­
ebrates an­
other year of
existence to
a community
that is ready
to read in
English or
Spanish every Wednesday
and Sunday.
La Prensa officially
launched their newspaper in
1913 until 1959 with Span­
ish only content. Thirty years
later, the newspaper was
revived by Tino and Millie
Duran, who were prepared
to publish a newspaper with
bilingual based content. At
first, Tino and Millie strug­
gled to get their publication
out to the public and on July
5, 1989, Millie successfully
gave birth to La Prensa de
San Antonio.
Since the beginning,
crime was never seen
through the pages.
For Millie, giv­
ing c riminals
the voice
and power
is something
that is not
worth
the time discussing or writ­
ing about. Putting their focus
on positive news by tying in
community based issues was
a main priority for the power
couple.
In those 27 years, La Pren­
sa has had many ups and
downs including a fire that
nearly destroyed the newspa­
per in 1998. Instead of giving
up, The Durans decided to go
back to work and published
the paper on time without
any setbacks.
If there’s a family who is
not going to let negativity get
in their way, it is the Durans.
They keep moving forward
as a team of writers and edi­
tors and a newspaper. Keep
in mind that for the Durans,
it was not only important to

so we have seen trends around

children have gotten into cars
without the parents’ permis­
sion,” Chief Hood told La
Prensa. “Children getting into
cars that were unlocked to get
a toy or to play inside usually
get stuck because of the child
lock and die while the parents
lost sight of them.”

a child or animal in a hot

hot, flushed skin, rapid breath­
ing and heartbeat, weakness
and dizziness, and a body
temperature of 105 degrees or
higher. A heat stroke requires
immediate emergency medical
care and can be fatal.
It is recommended to keep
the children hydrated and ap­
ply sunscreen every hour to
two hours.
Sparkler danger. Sparklers
are always a favorite, but
according to Perkins, many
underestimate its potential
risk for high burns and injury.
Families must remember to
light only one sparkler at a time
because any more than that
could cause a severe burn. Any
burn that destroys the top layer
of the skin should be looked at
by a doctor.
If there is a burn, please do
not use ice, butter, or ointment
and seek medical attention.
Blisters may occur and should
never be popped because they
help protect from infections.
Choking hazards. Lastly,
it is imperative to pay close at­
tention to any choking hazards
as a child’s trachea (windpipe)
is approximately the size of a
drinking straw. Children under
the age of 5 are at greatest risk
for choking injury and death.
According to Perkins, at least
one child dies from choking
on food every five days in the

United States, and more than
10,000 children are taken to a
hospital emergency room each
year for food-choking injuries.
The foods that can cause
choking include many Fourth
of July favorites including: hot
dogs, popcorn, chips, pretzel
nuggets, hard candy, cherries,
cheese cubes and many others.
Foods eaten when a child is
walking, riding in a car or play­
ing can be especially hazard­
ous. Families should become
familiar with life-saving tech­
niques such as child cardio­
pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
and the Heimlich maneuver.
Keep these tips in mind to
enjoy a safe time with friends
and family during this Fourth
of July weekend.

Heat safety...
stroke) is the leading cause
of non-crash, vehicle-related
deaths among children and
occurs when the body is not
able to cool itself quickly
enough. Young children are at
a higher risk for heat strokes
than adults because their bod­
ies heat up three to five times
faster.
The Department of Me­
teorology and Climate Science
recently stated that in 2016,
16 children have died from
heat stroke deaths in a hot car,
and three of them were from
Texas. To prevent the death of
kids and animals in hot cars,
there are solutions to keep
them at a cooler spot.

One precaution to take is
to teach children to not play
in hot cars by locking doors
and keeping car keys beyond
a child’s reach. It is also im­
portant to teach your children
that when weather becomes
extreme, it is not safe for a car
to be a place to play.
The first thing many should
remember is the acronym
A.C.T. To “avoid” heat stroke,
parents should never leave a
child in a hot vehicle and make
sure that all cars are locked, so
a child cannot sneak in.
Parents are recommended to
“create” reminders. Since chil­
dren or animals are usually in
the backseat, adults can place
a purse or an item necessary in
the backseat to get reminded,
especially if they are going to
a different direction than nor­
mal. Finally, if you see a child
stuck in a hot car, that is when
you “take action.”
In that case, adults must
immediately dial 911 to reach
emergency personnel because
they are trained to respond
to these situations and are
trained to evaluate and check
for signs of a heat stroke. It
is important to know that
one phone call can save a life
because every minute counts.

restart a heart and resusci­
tate the body, but the brain
is going to suffer irreparable so this is a message to make

Comentarios... Un día triste para los inmigrantes
Algo no
está bien
c u a n­d o
unos cele­
bran el do­
lor de mi­
llones. Ese
Jorge Ramos
es un día
muy triste. Vi a muchos políti­
cos aplaudir la decisión de la
Corte Suprema y a familias
enteras llorar de enojo, de ra­
bia, de frustración, de miedo.
Aplaudieron que miles de
padres y madres podrían ser
deportados y separados de
sus hijos.
El 23 de junio, los ocho
magistrados de la corte se
estancaron con respecto a la
legalidad de la acción ejecu­
tiva del presidente Obama en
2014 que habría permitido a
más de 4 millones de padres
indocumentados de hijos
nacidos en Estados Unidos
obtener permisos y ser prote­
gidos de la deportación. Con
una votación de 4 a 4, los
magistrados efectivamente se
lavaron las manos del tema.
Más adelante ese día, en con­
ferencia de prensa de la Casa
Blanca sobre el fallo, Obama,
con apariencia sombría, res­
pondió que, legalmente, él no
podía hacer nada ya.
Todo queda pendiente.
La pregunta es ¿qué vamos
a hacer con los 11 millones
de indocumentados que hay
en Estados Unidos? Obama,
cuando podía hacer algo en
el 2009 no lo hizo, y ahora
ya está demasiado tarde. A
la Corte Suprema le falta
un juez y habrá que esperar
hasta que el nuevo presidente
o presidenta elija al noveno
miembro. Pero ese es un
proceso legal largo e incierto.
Esto nos deja con el Con­
greso en Washington donde
todo se atora. Tirarse al piso y
sentarse hasta que se apruebe
una ley como hicieron varios
congresistas demócratas re­
cientemente tampoco fun­
ciona. Si no funcionó para
limitar el uso de armas de
fuego, tampoco servirá para
legalizar a 11 millones.
¿Entonces? Entonces nos
quedan los Dreamers. En
e­llos sí confío.
Confío en su honestidad y
en sus estrategias. Ellos saben
presionar a los congresistas
y senadores hasta que los
oigan. A veces se meten en
sus oficinas y no se van hasta
ser recibidos. Otras, hasta los
persiguen a los restaurantes.
Unas más los bombardean
con llamadas y mensajes en
las redes sociales. Sus tácticas
no son muy tradicionales,
pero funcionan.
¿Por qué lo hacen los
Dreamers? Porque no tienen
nada más que perder. Sus
papás pueden ser deportados
en cualquier momento, y si
Donald Trump llega a ser
presidente, ya prometió can­
celar las órdenes ejecutivas
de Obama. Eso los dejaría
en un limbo migratorio. Los
Dreamers están acostumbra­
dos al riesgo y han aprendido
que lo primero es perder el
miedo.
Su misión es convencer al
líder de la cámara de repre­
sentantes, el republicano Paul
Ryan, de hacer lo que John
Boehner, cobardemente, no
se atrevió desde el 2013: po­
ner a votación una propues­ta
de reforma migratoria. Si eso
ocurre, el Senado se vería
obligado a actuar también.
El problema es que los re­
publicanos en el Congreso no
piensan como la mayoría de
los norteamericanos.
A pesar de la retórica anti­
inmigrante de Trump, el 75
por ciento de los estadouni­
denses estaría dispuesto a
que los indocumentados se
quedaran, si cumplen ciertas
condiciones, de acuerdo con
una encuesta del Centro Pew
del pasado mes de marzo.
Solo el 23 por ciento no los
querrían aquí.
Entiendo, sin embargo, que
estas cifras no han servido de
mucho. A veces parecería que
nos estamos enfrentando a un
asunto totalmente irracional.
Desde que llegué a este país
en 1983 nunca he sentido
tanto odio como ahora.
El efecto Trump, sin duda,
ha sido muy nocivo en la
percepción que hay sobre los
inmigrantes. Si un candidato
presidencial insulta a mexica­
nos y musulmanes ¿por qué
sus seguidores no van a seguir
su ejemplo? Mitt Romney,
el excandidato presidencial
republicano, le llamó a esto
trickle-down racism (o la
promoción del racismo desde
arriba hacia abajo). Comen­
tarios que antes solo se decían
en la cocina o en la recámara
ahora se han vuelto virales.
El odio se ha democratizado.
La decisión de la Corte
Suprema ocurrió, por pura
casualidad, el mismo día que
Gran Bretaña votó por salirse
de la Unión Europea. Hay
días en que el miedo gana.
La xenofobia puede voltear
cualquier elección y a eso está
apostando Trump.
Espero que esta ventana de
odio se cierre pronto y que Es­
tados Unidos, que tan gene­
rosamente me ha tratado,
haga lo mismo con los que
llegaron después de mí. Pero
si no es así, las votaciones
del 8 de noviembre podrían
corregirlo casi todo. Por cada
indocumentado habrá, por lo
menos, un votante hispano.
Y los latinos suelen recordar
a quien los acompaña en sus
días más tristes.

Just a Thought: Fourth of July
Tomorrow
is the Fourth
of July, a fed­
eral holiday.
Variously
known as
the Fourth of
Steve Walker July and In­
dependence
Day, July Fourth has been a
federal holiday in the United
States since 1941. The tradi­
tion of Independence Day
celebrations goes all the way
back to the 18th century and
the American Revolution
(1775-83).
According to history, in
June 1776, representatives of
the 13 colonies, then fighting
in the revolutionary struggle,
wrote a resolution that would
declare their independence
from Great Britain.
Ironically, Great Britain
declared independence from
the European Union just over
a week ago, June 23. Amaz­
ing how history repeats itself.
On July 2 that year, the
Continental Congress voted
in favor of independence, and
two days later, its delegates
adopted the Declaration of
Independence, a historic
document drafted by Thomas
Jefferson.
From 1776 until the pres­
ent day, July 4 has been
celebrated as the birth of
American independence with
typical festivities ranging
from fireworks, parades and
concerts to more casual fam­
ily gatherings and barbecues.
Festivities, including con­
certs, bonfires, parades and
the firing of cannons and
muskets, usually accompa­
nied the first public read­
ings of the Declaration of
Independence, beginning
immediately after its adop­
tion. Philadelphia held the
first annual commemoration
of independence on July 4,
1777, while Congress was
still occupied with the ongo­
ing war.
Firing of cannons and mus­
kets were the precursor of our
modern day fireworks.
Here in San Antonio, there
will be a Fourth of July cel­
ebration at Woodlawn Lake
Park in pure red, white and
blue fashion.
There will be fireworks,
food, freedom, a kid’s zone
to drop off the little ones and
even a parade. The free event
will start at 8 a.m. at 1103
Cincinnati Avenue.
Seaworld San Antonio will
be hosting their celebration
on both July 3 and July 4.
Their parking lots will open
at 8 a.m., with the entrance
plaza opening at 9 a.m. and
the park officially opening at
10 a.m.
Seaworld is located at
10500 Sea World Drive.
Then there is the Six Flags
Fiesta Texas July 4th Fest,
17000 IH-10 West. There
will also be plenty to do at
the Alamo, from hearing the
Declaration of Independence
being read aloud, bands
playing folk songs, musket
demonstrations and even free
paletas for visitors. Free at the
Alamo, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at
300 Alamo Plaza.
Along the banks of the
River Walk, various vendors
will be displaying their hand­
made creations. This event
will feature many local art­
ists, jewelers and craftsmen
on July 2-5, from 11 a.m.-11
p.m., 110 Broadway.
At Traders Village there
will be a lot of free activi­
ties for kids including face
painting, a magician, balloon
artists, a mechanical bull and
free American Flags. The cost
is $3 from 12:30 p.m.-4:30
p.m at Traders Village, 9333
Southwest Loop 410 at Old
Pearsall Road.
The Historic Market Square
will be hosting, Freedom
Fest, or two days filled with
live music, food and activities
for the kids. It is a free event
on July 3-5 from 12-8 p.m.,
514 W. Commerce.

Convención en contra de los ideales republicanos

La convención republicana
está más para aquí que para
allá. Una gran parte del lide­
razgo del Partido Republi­
cano no solamente se ha
resistido a la fórmula política
ofrecida por Donald Trump,
sino que está realizando el
último esfuerzo para evitar
su nominación oficial en
Cleveland, Ohio.
Trump definitivamente no
profesa los ideales políticos
de las bases del Partido Re­
publicano.
El año pasado, el candida­
to del copete rojizo exhortó
que el Tratado de Libre Co­
mercio de América del Norte
(TLCAN) debería liquidarse.
“Es un desastre”, manifestó.
Sin embargo, está semana,
en una plataforma que tenía
desechos de latas de gaseo­
sas como fondo, indicó que
el TLCAN debería ser re­
negociado. Haciendo uso
de su usual y acostumbrada
forma histriónica de decir
las cosas puntualizó que los
grupos que la apoyan están
“violando al país”.
Recordemos que el Trata­
do de Libre Comercio es una
visión enteramente republi­
cana. Sus bases teóricas se
originaron sobre el idealismo
de apertura de mercados de
Ronald Reagan. Su sucesor,
George H. W. Bush (padre),
no solamente la promovió
en Estados Unidos, sino que
también logró convencer a
sus dos colegas norteame­
ricanos, Carlos Salinas de
México y Brian Mulroney
de Canadá, que firmaran
un tratado de cooperación
comercial. Eventualmente el
TLCAN se firmó en diciem­
bre de 1992 y sus políticas
se implementaron con el go­
bierno de Bill Clinton.
Así, las políticas económi­
cas clásicas de los republi­
canos se suscriben dentro
neoliberalismo, las cuales
promueven claramente la
globalización. Las políticas
económicas neoliberales
esencialmente benefician al
empresariado nacional (base
del Partido Republicano),
y van en detrimento de los
trabajadores organizados en
sindicatos (base del Partido
Demócrata).
Al no apoyar el neolibera­
lismo de los republicanos,
Donald Trump está pro­
moviendo el aislacionismo,
la imposición de castigos a
las empresas que insisten
en invertir en otros países
y la creación de barreras
arancelarias a productos
provenientes de otros países.
Lo anterior va en contra de la
ética económica republicana.
Lo mismo sucede en torno
a las políticas internacio­
nales. Ronald Reagan, su­
puesto ídolo de Trump, se
distinguió por su liderazgo al
frente de la Organización del
Tratado del Atlántico Norte
(OTAN).
A través de una estrate­
gia llamada “containment”,
Reagan obligó al gobierno
comunista de la Unión So­
viética a cambiar su postura
conflictiva en Europa. Junto
con Mikhael Gorbachev,
Reagan fue artífice de la
destrucción del Muro de
Berlín, simbolismo de la
Guerra Fría.
Trump, por su parte, en­
cuentra a la OTAN como
una organización interna­
cional caduca, sin un obje­
tivo concreto, que debe ser
bien reemplazada por otra
organización más, aparente­
mente, acorde a los tiempos
de hoy. De acuerdo a su
punto de vista, los países
que la componen abusan de
la generosidad de Estados
Unidos.
Por otra parte, la retórica
social de Trump no apunta
ni al republicanismo de Rea­
gan ni al democratismo de
Lyndon B. Johnson.
El primero firmó una ley
migratoria integral que fa­
voreció a millones de in­
documentados y el segundo
facilitó la terminación de la
segregación racial y étnica en

LINDA PACE FOUNDATION PRESENTS: RIVANE
NEUENSCHWANDER-SECONDARY STORIES — This
spring, the Linda Pace Foundation presents the Texas debut of
“Secondary Stories,” a room-sized installation by Brazilian art­
ist Rivane Neuenschwander, who has become widely regarded
for her often ephemeral work that explores narratives about
language, nature, social interactions and the passing of time.
“Secondary Stories,” as well as three video installation works, is
open at SPACE, the public gallery of the Linda Pace Foundation.
The exhibit will be on view through July 29, 2017 at Linda Pace

CONEY ISLAND AT THE MCNAY — The exhibition ex­
plores and celebrates Coney Island, the most iconic, uniquely
American Amusement Park in the United States, which has
served as national cultural symbol inspiring artists, musicians,
novelists, poets and filmmakers. From Coney Island’s beginning
as a watering hole for the wealthy, through its transformation
into an entertainment mecca for the masses, to the closing of
Astroland Amusement Park following decades of urban decline,
this first-of-its-kind exhibition uses visual art as a lens to explore

Summitt passes away at 64
Hall of Fame coach Pat Summitt, a pioneer of
women’s college basketball who guided the Ten­
nessee Volunteers to eight national titles in her
38 seasons at the university, died Tuesday morn­
ing. She was 64. Summitt led the Lady Vols to
1,098 victories -- the most in Division I college
basketball history (men or women) -- before step­
ping down in 2012, one year after announcing
she had early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type.
James skips player option
Finals MVP LeBron James will not exercise his
player option with the Cleveland Cavaliers for
the 2016-17 season. James will become a free
agent July 1 for the third straight summer. He
was slated to earn $24 million next season.
Though he has opted out, James can re-sign
with the Cavaliers and said last week he has
no intentions of leaving Cleveland again.

en la lista de jugadores invita­
dos del selectivo 2016 NBA
Draft, el pasado jueves 23 de
junio, se hizo realidad.
Los jugadores elegidos se
esmeraron en darle agradeci­
mientos a sus familiares, en­
trenadores, universidades y
colegios en los que tuvieron
oportunidades de cursar es­
tudios superiores y, a la vez,
ser parte de los equipos repre­
sentativos en las diversas con­
ferencias sancionadas por la
National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA) con sede
en la ciudad de Indianapolis,
Indiana.
La ceremonia con transmi­
sión nacional fue encabezada
por Adam Silver, comisionado
de la National Basketball As­
sociation (NBA), quien, per­
sonalmente, estuvo llamando
a uno por uno de los jugadores
que en la primera y segunda
ronda fueron seleccionados por
directivos de los 30 clubes que
integran la NBA.
La NBA fue creada el 6 de
junio de 1946 con oficinas cen­
trales en ciudad de Nueva York
y se divide en las conferencias
del oeste y este con 14 equipos
cada una, respectivamente.
La directiva de Spurs de San
Antonio, cuyo gerente general
y presidente de franquicias es
R.C. Buford, tuvo la opor­
tunidad de elegir al guardia
Dejounte Murray, quien estuvo
enlistado en la primera ronda,
escaño 29. Murray, de 19 años
de edad, nativo de Seattle,
estado de Washington, cursó
preparatoria en Rainier Beach
High School, con estudios su­
periores en University of Wash­
ington, donde jugó baloncesto
en las posiciones de guardia
tirador y repartidor. Por su
espectacular estilo de juego,
Murray en su temporada de
novato obtuvo nominaciones

En cuanto se anunció su se­

“Vaya que esto sí ha sido
una gran sorpresa para mí. No
esperaba que una grandiosa
plaza me eligiera, especial­
mente su entrenador en jefe
(Gregg Popovich), uno de los

humildad aceptó la invitación
para poder enseñarles mis
habilidades en el juego del
baloncesto. Además de que
los Spurs me estarán dando la

guntándole a Murray sobre su
opinión al respecto por haber
sido elegido por los Spurs.
“Lo digo emocionado y cla­
ro. Fui bendecido para ser
ubicado en la primera ronda.
Mi comportamiento será posi­
tivo dejándole a Dios que él
haga su trabajo conmigo”,
respondió Murray.
Pregunta: “Estás próximo
a unirte a una franquicia de
renombre, Spurs de San An­
tonio. ¿Podrías decir que será
para ti la entrada a un equipo
que es entrenado por Gregg
Popovich y que tiene en su
alineación a veteranos de la
talla de Tim Duncan, Manu
Ginóbili, Tony Parker, Kawhi
Leonard? ¿Cómo se te ayudará
para hacer tu estilo de juego?
Murray: “Ello será lo que en
mucho ayudará a mi estilo de
juego. Esos son algunos vetera­
nos que me has nombrado. Un
gran entrenador (Popovich),
probablemente, uno de los
grandes entrenadores en la
liga, por lo que me encuentro
emocionado para comenzar
con ellos, en aprender todo
lo que se pueda, sobre todo

quiere saber de tu persona”.
Pregunta: “Claro que tuvis­
te diversas emociones. Tu
presentación fue larga, pero
al fin, ellos son los Spurs, un
equipo que en cada temporada
tiene la mentalidad de ganar
el campeonato. Ello es algo
agridulce, porque estuviste
mucho tiempo en las conver­
saciones, lo que sin embargo
te hizo sentirte confortable al
final”.
Murray: “Sí, fue una larga
conversación, pero nada de
molestias. Nunca traté de
enseñar nada negativo, traté
de estar positivo y cómodo.
Tengo el presentimiento de
que voy a trabajar para una
organización de categoría en
la NBA. Como tú lo has dicho,
Spurs es un equipo que cada
año busca la forma de conquis­
tar un campeonato. Me siento
bendecido de estar en esta
posición, bendecido porque
seré parte de la organización”.

SAFC defeats OC Blues FC 3-2 in thrilling fashion

San Antonio FC (SAFC) beat
Orange County Blues FC 3-2
at Toyota Field. The team be­
fore 4,593 fans recorded their
second consecutive win after
coming from behind thanks
to goals from Michael Reed,
Franck Tayou and Milton
Palacios.
“It was a rollercoaster of a
match,” SAFC Head Coach
Darren Powell said. “The guys
can be proud of themselves
tonight. They showed great
character and scored good
goals. Those are a good three
points against a very good
team.”
SAFC opened the scoring in
the 17th minute when forward
Jacques Francois fed midfielder
Michael Reed with a throughball, who then slotted the
ball past goalkeeper Brandon
Miller.
OC Blues found the equal­
izer just minutes before half­
time with a shot from outside
the box by Roy Meeus. The
visitors added a second in
the 50th minute when Didier
Crettenand recovered the ball
in the midfield and scored
from long range thanks to a
deflection.
SAFC leveled the score yet
again in the 73rd minute when
substitute forward Franck
Tayou found a point-blank
tap-in following a square pass
inside the box from Francois,
earning his first goal for the
club. The hosts then earned the
winning goal when defender
Milton Palacios made a run
down the flank and slotted the
ball into the net in the 80th
minute after he was found by
Carlos Alvarez pass.
“I’m very happy about scor­
ing my second goal of the
season. That goal is for all
the fans and for the squad.
We’re always in it together in
the good and the bad, and we
have to keep moving forward
and working hard,” said SAFC
defender Palacios.
With the victory, SAFC have
now earned their first back-toback wins in franchise history.
San Antonio FC will return to
action on Sunday, July 3 as
they travel to Oklahoma to face
Tulsa Roughnecks FC for the
second time this season.

mes a las 8:30 de la noche
(cuando la temperatura ha
descendido) en el Arneson
River Theatre.
El festival es un gran atractivo para el público local y el
turismo al estar localizado en
la zona hotelera de la ciudad.

Becky Hammon, ex guardia
estelar, jugó durante 16 temporadas con los equipos Liberty
de Nueva York y Stars de San
Antonio, se destacó jugando de
1999 al 2006 con Liberty y del
2007-2014 con Stars.
Por su legado en la WNBA,
Hammon, recientemente, fue
incluida entre las basquet-
bolistas más destacadas que se
encuentran retiradas y activas,
ello en cumplimiento de los
20 años que tiene de fundada
la liga femenil profesional
WNBA, que se encuentra estrenando a su cuarta presidenta:
Lisa Borders, de 58 años de
edad, quien el pasado mes de
noviembre entró al relevo de
Laurel Richie.
Hammon, en el 2011 por los
quince años de la WNBA, fue
incluida en la ilustre lista de
las 15 mejores basquetbolistas
activas.
En su brillante carrera
con Stars, Hammon dejó un
banderín del oeste capturado
en la temporada 2008, el cual
se encuentra encumbrado en el
techo del estadio AT&T Center. En ese mismo lugar, desde
el sábado 25 de junio, este
banderín se encuentra acompañado por la playera No. 25
que fue retirada con todos los
honores al final del partido

Stars se discutieron defendiendo la casa, derrotando al

Fourth of July recipes for patriotic fun

Today is the day we declared
independence from the British Empire 240 years ago and
formed 13 original colonies into
the United States of America.
Many celebrate the freedom
thorough popping fireworks,
going to parades, speeches and
other American ceremonies going around the country. However, when I go home, I enjoy
celebrating my freedom with
family in the kitchen.

great recipes, courtesy of Food
Network, that will make your Independence Day more patriotic,
savory and sweet.
Ree Drummond’s Grilled
Burgers
Ingredients:
Vegetable oil, for the grill
3 pounds 80 percent lean
ground beef
Kosher salt and freshly ground
pepper
Tabasco sauce, to taste
6 Kaiser Rolls
6 tablespoons unsalted butter,
softened
Assorted toppings, for serving
(right)
Directions:
Preheat a grill to medium
high and oil the grates, place the
ground beef in a medium mixing
bowl, add 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
and 3/4 teaspoon pepper. Then,
add a few dashes of Tabasco
sauce and mix the meat and
seasoning.
Form the meat into six 1-inchthick patties and place on the
grill. Cover and cook 3 minutes,
rotate and leave them on the
same side and cook 3 more
minutes, then flip and repeat.
Meanwhile, slice the rolls
in half and spread each cut
side with 1/2 tablespoon butter. Grill the rolls until lightly
toasted and build the burgers
with assorted toppings.
Sautéed mushrooms
Melt 2 tablespoons butter in
a large skillet over medium-high
heat; add 1 pound sliced mushrooms, season with salt and pepper and cook 2 minutes. Add 2
to 3 tablespoons broth or wine
and cook 6 to 8 more minutes.
Caramelized onions
Melt 4 tablespoons butter in
a skillet over low heat. Add 2
large sliced red onions and 3
to 4 tablespoons brown sugar.
Cook until caramelized around
20 minutes.
Pico de gallo
Finely chop 5 plum tomatoes,
1/2 large onion, 3 jalapeno
peppers and 1 bunch cilantro.
Add juice of 1/2 lime and salt
to taste.
Bacon
Cook over medium-high heat
until crisp.
Stars and Stripes Cupcakes
Ingredients
For the cupcakes:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking pow-
der
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 1/2 sticks (12 tablespoons)
unsalted butter, melted
1 tablespoon pure vanilla
extract
1/3 cup milk
For the frosting:
2 sticks unsalted butter, at
room temperature
3 cups confectioners’ sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon raspberry extract
2 to 3 tablespoons milk
Red gel food coloring
1/2 cup blue candy melts
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a 12-cup muffin
pan with paper liners.
Make the cupcakes: Whisk the
flour, baking powder and salt in
a medium bowl. Combine the
granulated sugar and eggs in a
large bowl and beat with a mixer
on medium-high speed until
pale and thick, about 2 minutes.
Beat in the melted butter and
vanilla until smooth. Reduce
the mixer to low speed and beat
in half of the flour mixture, the
milk, and then the remaining
flour mixture until smooth.
Divide the batter among the
prepared muffin cups and bake
until a toothpick comes out
clean, 20 to 25 minutes. Let
cool 10 minutes in the pan,
then remove to a rack to cool
completely.
Make the frosting: Beat the
butter in a large bowl with a
mixer on medium speed until
creamy, about 1 minute. Gradually beat in the confectioners’
sugar until smooth, and then
beat in the vanilla and raspberry
extracts.
Beat in the milk, 1 tablespoon
at a time, until creamy. Transfer
half of the frosting to a separate
bowl and tint red with food
coloring.
Put the white and red frosting
in separate zip-top bags; snip a
corner of each. Snip a corner of
a larger zip-top bag; put both
frosting bags in the larger bag
and twist so that they pipe out
of the snipped corner. Pipe the
frosting onto the cupcakes.
Make the candy stars: Line
a baking sheet with parchment
paper. Microwave the candy
melts in a microwave-safe bowl
in 45-second intervals, stirring,
until smooth.
Transfer to a small zip-top bag
and snip a small corner. Pipe
twelve 2- to 3-inch stars onto
the parchment, piping double
or triple lines for stability.
Refrigerate until set, about
10 minutes. Carefully lift the
stars from the parchment and
insert into the frosting on each
cupcake.

The Cactus Pear Music Festival (CPMF) is ready for another
year to provide audiences and
musicians alike the power to
make music and celebrate an
important milestone.
20/20: 20 World Class Artists, 20 Masterpieces for the
twentieth season of Cactus Pear
Music Festival is celebrating 20
years of a vision to make South
Texas a greater musical destination. During its run from July
6 through the 17, four great
programs and 19 talented artists will join Artistic Director
Stephanie Sant’Ambrogio for
a visionary season filled with
classical chamber music.
It all started in 1997 when
Sant’Ambrogio noticed an
empty space in San Antonio
in 1997. It was difficult to understand how the city had not
recognized the importance of
classical music.
“When I moved from Cleveland to San Antonio, I noticed
two things: the sizes of the
audiences to a musical recital
in the city were a bit smaller
than what I was used to because in Cleveland, we would
be sold out in every concert,”
Sant’Ambrogio told La Prensa.
“I was also disappointed that
during the summer, there were
not any programs or recitals
with the San Antonio Symphony.”
It was at that point that
Sant’Ambrogio took matters
into her own hands and introduced San Antonio to chamber
music. Overtime, Cactus Pear
swirled into a dream come true

and this year, it will feature one
piece from various previous
festival seasons.
It will also be a festival that
will feature musicians from
the Young Artist Program
(YAP) Fellows as professionals. Sant’Ambrogio believes
strongly in giving young musicians opportunities as they
are developing their careers,
of passing the baton to the
next generation, and receiving
inspiration from these up-andcoming talented performers.
“Even though I have been
playing for three decades, I get
inspired by younger talents. I
think that it is very important to
pass the baton and not just have
one age group on stage because
it is important to have a broad
range,” stated Sant’Ambrogio.
Putting young prodigies and
experienced artists together will
elevate the festival into one of
the most historic events to include all musicians no matter
their skill level. With 20 Artists
and 20 chamber music works,
this is a seminal festival filled
with classic treasures and cutting-edge contemporary music.
“People will be surprised with
classical music that is not stuffy.
I think they will be impressed
that our concert is really fun.
We have door prizes in admission, and it’s a very powerful
fuel for fun and lightness,” said
Sant’Ambrogio. “We, in return,
acknowledge and appreciate
what people are doing. If you
are intimated by classical you
need to check out the festival
because it will open the door
to a genre of music you were
not expecting.”
The festival is based at
CPMF’s San Antonio concert
venue, Coker United Methodist
Church, 231 East North Loop
Rd. The four programs will
be performed on this “main
stage.” CPMF also performs
two concerts in Boerne and
one each in Kerrville and New

New Asian elephant arrives
at San Antonio Zoo

The San Antonio Zoo recently
received a great, big gift from
Ringling Bros. and Barnum &
Bailey: the zoo is now home
to one of its retired Asian elephants, “Nicole,” a 40-year-old
elephant who is now the newest companion for the zoo’s
56-year-old Asian elephant
“Lucky.”
“Since early 2015, the San
Antonio Zoo has been searching
for a companion animal for our
beloved elephant, Lucky, and we
celebrate the result of that hard
work made possible by a new
partnership with our friends at
Feld Entertainment,” said Tim
Morrow, the zoo’s executive
director and CEO.
Last month, Feld Entertainment Inc., the parent company
of Ringling Bros. transitioned all
of the elephants from its touring
circus productions to the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant
Conservation. Nicole delighted
circus audiences over the last 20
years, and she now has a new
home at the San Antonio Zoo.
“We are very proud to bring
Nicole to the San Antonio Zoo
where we know she will be
well cared for,” said Dr. Dennis
Schmitt, Ringling Bros. chair of
Veterinary Care and Conservation. “When we announced
last year that all our elephants
would transition from the circus
to the Ringling Bros. Center
for Elephant Conservation, it
is partnerships just like the one
with the San Antonio Zoo we
wanted to pursue so families can
continue to see these magnificent
animals,” he added.
Lucky’s previous companion,
“Boo,” passed away in March
2013 at the age of 59. Shortly
after Morrow’s arrival in December 2014, the zoo with the full
support of its board of directors
began a search for a compatible
companion for Lucky. Feld Entertainment’s recent decision to
transition its elephants created
an opportunity for a collaborative partnership to provide
a companion for Lucky and
continue the zoo’s commitment
to the care and conservation of
Asian elephants.
Zoo guests will be soon able
to visit Nicole in her new home.
“Our animal care professionals
are taking great care in the process of introducing Lucky and
Nicole to each other, so either
elephant may be exploring the

The San Antonio Zoo’s home
for Asian elephants exceeds the
space and design standards for
multiple elephants as established
by both of its accrediting organizations, the Association of Zoos
and Aquariums and the Zoological Association of America.
Recently, the zoo completed a
project that extended the existing rain garden along the front
of the elephant habitat. While
undertaking that construction
project, the zoo took the opportunity to make improvements to
the elephant pool and added an
access yard.
“This new addition underscores our firm commitment to
Lucky and the future of our elephant conservation programs,
both locally and in their native
habitats. Our zoo offers a rare
and much-needed opportunity
for people to learn from, connect with, and be inspired by
elephants,” said Morrow. “Zoos

keep our eyes focused on saving
species like the Asian elephants
from extinction so that we can
learn from them for generations

“Mi Casa, Your Casa” en el jardín del Museo de Arte

¿Qué más tentador que una
hamaca bajo la sombra de un
enorme árbol, con el río San
Antonio al lado en una calurosa
tarde de verano? Pues el público que asistió a la apertura
de la exhibición “Mi Casa, Your
Casa” en el Jardín de Esculturas
del Museo de Arte de San
Antonio el pasado viernes 24
de junio no pudo resistirse a
la tentación de tumbarse con
gozo en las hamacas afirmando
el espíritu interactivo de esta
nueva exhibición.
“Mi Casa, Your Casa” es una
instalación de diez marcos rojos
de metal que recrean la forma
más simbólica de una casa. Fue
creada por los diseñadores contemporáneos mexicanos Héctor Esrawe e Ignacio Cadena
en 2014. Esta instalación ha
estado en exhibición en otros
museos de la nación.
Dentro de cada marco cuel-
ga una hamaca, un “asiento”
muy típico de Latinoamérica
que puede servir desde cama,
columpio o vehículo, que, indudablemente, invita al ocio.
De acuerdo a la información
proporcionada durante la apertura, la exhibición “está inspirada en los mercados callejeros de América Latina donde
las conexiones humanas se
construyen a diario… (es) un
espacio para ser habitado, un
escenario para ser observado,
un taller para aprender y un
lienzo en blanco para la libre
expresión y la interacción”.
Y la interacción fue lo que desató el ambiente de la tarde, que
estuvo acompañado de música
en vivo, limonadas heladas y
comida de food trucks.
Los niños retozaron en las
hamacas, algunas madres se
mecieron con los pequeños
en ellas, algunas parejas intercambiaron cariñitos, otros se
relajaron tanto, que era difícil
lograr cupo para disfrutar un
momento la instalación.
Los marcos rojos evocan claramente una casa y sus hamacas el confort del hogar. “Mi Casa, Your Casa” se despliega

La versatilidad de las estructuras se ve vio reforzada
cuando integrantes del museo
empezaron “crear muros” en
ella simplemente usando lana
“Mi Casa, Your Casa” estará
de colores, actividad en la cual desplegada en el Jardín de Eslos niños presentes se unieron culturas del Museo de Arte de
inmediatamente.

El clásico de Roald Dahl “BFG” llega a
la pantalla grande este fin de semana

El talento de tres de los mejores cuenta-cuentos en la historia, Roald Dahl, Walt Disney
y Steven Spielberg se fusionan
para traer a los cines el clásico
“The BFG”.
Dirigida por Spielberg, la
nueva película de Disney “The
BFG” o The Big Friendly Giant cuenta la historia de una
pequeña huérfana llamada Sophie que hace amistad con un
gigante bonachón que se dedica
a recolectar y crear sueños.
Mientras la amistad entre la
pequeña y el buen gigante es
cada vez más cercana, Sophie
llama la atención de un grupo

Balcones Heights Jazz Festival
returns this summer

If you are looking for something to do this summer, the
Balcones Heights Jazz Festival
might be just what you need.
The 23rd annual festival
returns on Friday, July 8 and
will continue every Friday
evening until Aug. 5 with the
opening act starting at 7:30
p.m. and the headliner taking
the stage at 9 p.m.
This year’s line-up is mixed
with jazz, R&B, funk and
straight-ahead jazz. Performances by internationally acclaimed artists include: Tom
Browne, Jeff Lobber, Jeanette
Harris, 3rd Force and Stanley
Jordan. Texas artist Dean
James will be starting off the
festival on Friday, July 8.
This year’s festival will
create a laid back and family
friendly atmosphere, perfect
for the summer, that’s estimated to reach 4,000 jazz
fans.
David Munoz, host of “Sunday Morning Jazz” on Q101.9
will be back this year to host
the event. He’s hosted the
Jazz Festival for the past 22
years and has hosted the “Sunday Morning Jazz Show” for
more than 26 years.
“This year’s performance
lineup is better than ever!
From hand-picking a group of
national performers, who are
new to the Balcones Heights
Jazz Festival, to selecting
artists who bring a unique
sound beyond traditional
smooth jazz, David Munoz
has done it once again, showcasing his more than 20-year

“BFG”, la nueva película de
Steven Spielberg, se estrenó
este 1 de julio uniéndose así
a la celebración del centenario de natalicio del escritor
británico Roald Dahl, autor
de la historia.
De acuerdo a la página web
de Scholastic, Roald Dahl
nació en Llanduff, Gales del
sur, de padres noruegos en
1916 y fue educado en internados.
Más adelante en busca de
aventuras se fue a África a trabajar con Shell Oil. Y cuando
sobrevino la Segunda Guerra
Mundial se enlistó en la Real
Fuerza Aérea (RAF) como piloto de combate. Casi muere
en un accidente aéreo en 1942
y resultó con heridas serias.
Imposibilitado para seguir
volando, es destacado en la
embajada británica en Washington DC como air attaché.
En ese tiempo conoce al escritor británico C.S. Forester,
quien le anima a escribir sus
experiencias en el desierto de
Libia.
Su primer escrito pagado,
basado en su experiencia
volando Gladiator en Libia,
se publicó anónimamente en
The Saturday Evening Post
bajo el título de “Shot Down
Over Libya”, más tarde titulado como “A Piece of Cake”,

Asimismo, escribió novelas
y cuentos cortos para adultos
como “Tales of the Unexpected”, antes de concentrarse en

Dahl empezó a trabajar en la
historia “The Gremlins”, una

Roald Dahl vivió en Great
Missenden, Buckinghamshire,
(Inglaterra) con su esposa Liccy.
Murió a la edad de 74 años
el 23 de noviembre de 1990
y está enterrado en la iglesia
de St. Peter and St. Paul en
Great Missenden.
De acuerdo al sitio oficial

en 1991 se publicaron sus

‘Curious World’ summer tour inspires playful learning

of a new immersive and playful learning experience, “Curious World Tour.”
Kicking off at Brooklyn
Bridge Park , HMH will take
Curious World Tour on a
nationwide adventure, popping up in eight cities in Texas
and California – San Antonio,
Austin, Dallas, San Diego,
Sacramento, Oakland, San
Francisco and Los Angeles –
throughout the summer.
In each market, HMH will
work with local nonprofit organizations to donate books
and resources while engaging

alongside a local artist. Murals
will be donated to education
