On Saturday, April 16th, from
11:30am to 4pm, celebrate the
opening of the new Five Points
Museum of Contemporary Art, beginning with the 2016 Victoria Art
Car Parade with a FREE family
event and parade. Ann Harithas,
founder of the new museum, has
been a judge at the annual Orange
Show Houston Art Car Parade for
over 25 years and is also founder
of the Art Car Museum in Houston. For the 2016 Victoria Art Car
Parade, Harithas has organized
award-winning art cars from noted car artists for display both at
Jam Fest 2016 downtown, and on
North Moody Street in and around
the Five Points Museum with a
new exhibition, Lost Worlds: New
Drawings and Sculpture, by Houston artist Noah Edmundson on
view inside the museum. In addition, students from local schools
participating in the Manhattan
Art Program (MAP) will have

UHV students volunteer at area nonprofits for Day of Service
A group of University of Houston-Victoria students spent Saturday morning giving back to the
community.
Forty-two students took part in
UHV Jags Join In – Day of Service. They worked with three Victoria charities: Golden Crescent
Habitat for Humanity, Food Bank
of the Golden Crescent and AdoptA-Pet.
“Jags Join In is a great opportunity for UHV students to immerse
themselves in service projects,”
said Kaleb Briscoe, UHV Student
Life associate director. “Many of
our students enjoy helping out,
and it gives them a good look into
what kind of volunteer work is
needed in our community.”
The number of students taking
part in Jags Join In was double
from the previous year, said Michael Wilkinson, UHV Student
Life & Services director.
“It’s very exciting to see so
many of them giving back and
making their mark on our community,” he said. “Our students transform themselves in many positive
ways by engaging in service projects.”
As part of the Habitat for Humanity project, students worked
at two sites. One group helped
build a house while another group
cleaned the nonprofit organization’s warehouse. Students who
assisted at the Food Bank stocked
shelves with food products, sorted
boxes and prepared the warehouse
to receive more food.
After volunteering at those locations, some students went to
Adopt-A-Pet, where they spent
time doing everything from wiping
down windows, cleaning kennels
and folding brochures to socializing with dogs and cats available
for adoption.

of curriculum instruction and president of the Adopt-A-Pet Board of
Directors. “It’s important for peo-
ple to see what we do here. It’s not
always warm and fuzzy; we’ve got
to do the dirty work, too.”
Karen Williams, a sophomore
communications major from Seguin, and Makayla Hargrove, a junior communications major from
Austin, spent time playing with a
few of the dogs at Adopt-A-Pet.
“I like to volunteer, especially
when there’s the bonus of getting
to play with animals,” Hargrove
said. “I volunteered at Adopt-APet a few times during my fresh-
man year, and it’s good to come
back and see they’re still here
helping homeless animals.”
Williams grew up around animals on her family land near Seguin. She eventually hopes to
build her own shelter on that land.
“I used to volunteer at a shelter in
my hometown,” she said. “Events
like Jags Join In show volunteers
how kindhearted the people who
run these places are. I don’t think
any person or pet should be homeless or hungry.”

Too Good To Be True

Not too long ago I spoke to a
caller who was concerned about a
possible scam. He told me that he
was contacted by phone and told
that he had won $80,000.00 and a
new luxury vehicle in the Jamaican lottery.
He further explained that in order to receive his prizes he would
have to wire a certain amount of
money to the caller to cover taxes
and processing fees. He just wanted to know if it was legitimate. I
explained to him that this was a
common scam and that unfortunately he had not won anything.
He continued to inquire about it,
as if in disbelief that it was a scam.
He and I then broke it down a bit.
I asked if he had played the Jamai-
can lottery; he said that he hadn’t.
This was the first red flag. Now,
I’m not familiar with all lotteries
out there but from what I understand, you must play to win. The
second red flag was when I asked if
he had ever been to Jamaica and he
replied no. The third red flag was
when he was told to wire money
in order to claim his prize. A legitimate lottery will not require you to
pay to receive your prize.
Since then we’ve had a number of calls with questions about
scams. Lately, because of tax season, it’s been the IRS scam. Local
residents are getting calls from
scammers identifying themselves
as a representative of the IRS.
They are told that they are required to pay unpaid taxes or a
warrant will be issued for their ar-
rest. They also ask you to pay with
a pre paid debit card.
If you get a call like this just remember that the IRS will not call
you. Any contact they make will
be through the mail and they certainly won’t ask you to pay with a
pre paid debit card.
Another scam that we regularly
get complaints on is the tech support scam. The caller identifies
themselves as a representative of
Microsoft Tech Support and tells
you that they have detected a virus
on your computer. They then ask
that you follow a set of instructions that will allow them remote
access to your computer. It’s at this
point that they have access to all
of the information stored on your
computer.
Important things to remember
are: there is no way for Microsoft to know if you have a virus
on your computer and you should
never allow anyone remote access
to your computer.
These are just a few of the many
scams that are out there. These
however have caused the most
complaints to our office over the
past few months.
No matter how convincing the
scammer sounds, slow down a bit,
think about what’s being said and
what’s being asked of you. Don’t
let them prey on your emotions. If
you feel you have gotten a scam
call, simply hang up. Don’t worry
about their feelings because they
certainly aren’t concerned about
yours.

In fact, unearned rewards can be
harmful, because artificially inflating a child’s self-esteem merely
for participation in sport sends the
wrong message, warns psychologist Jason Richardson.
“There are plenty of incarcerated felons with an inflated selfview and there are extremely
successful people grappling with
a more moderate self-concept, so
self-esteem alone is not the measure by which we should prepare
our children for greatness,” says
Richardson, a Pan-Am Games
gold medalist who is also known
as “Dr. JRich” among colleagues. Richardson isn’t alone. Last
year, Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker James Harrison returned two participation
trophies given to his two sons,
awarded not for a specific victory
that they’d earned, but simply for
being student-athletes.
Anyone can give and get a trophy, but the true value of youth
sports is in the occasional tough
lessons – and successes – children
experience through hard work and
merit, says Richardson, author of
“It’s All BS! We’re All Wrong,

He offers practical tips parents
can share with their kids.
• Stop saying “the problem is
…” Fill in the blank. Too many
people say the problem is with the
coach, the school, the other kids,
the equipment, the schedule – and
so on. This kind of thinking im-
plies failure because it immediately rules out your child’s goals.
Instead, say things that rule in
positive outcomes, such as, “I/We/
You can do this!”
• Make failure a teachable moment. Sports can test a kid’s emotional fragility. They may want
to give up with failure, but that’s
a terrible lesson. If your child
missed a free throw that would’ve
won the team the game, encourage
free-throw practice the next day.
Better yet, ask them what they are
going to do differently next time!
Use a coach’s staple: remind your
child that Michael Jordan was cut
by his high school basketball team
during his sophomore year. Parents can always reward persistence
and effort. • Don’t let your child’s ego run
wild. The flipside of low self-esteem due to failure can be cockiness with success. Children have
far less experience keeping the
ego in check, so if he/she is the
best athlete in school, they may
become arrogant. Try to catch this
early; people evolve at different
rates. Temper their ego by showing examples of humility, respect
and gratitude. Use examples of
great athletes who have overcome
slumps or adversity.
• Show them how to be a better student. It may seem odd that
a star quarterback can memorize
every detail of a complex playbook, but has trouble with class

The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC) wants its donors, supporters and the community at large to be informed about
the Zika virus.
With that in mind, the center –
which serves 43 counties across
South Texas – is offering some tips
for the upcoming Spring Break
holiday, as well as the latest in media and regulatory reports about
the virus.
Spring Break
Since the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration recommends that
donors wait 28 days after returning
from areas where the Zika virus
is actively transmitted to donate
blood, STBTC is asking for donations before vacations to Mexico,
the Caribbean, Central America
and/or most of South America.
If travelers do go to areas where
mosquitoes are known to spread
viruses, the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention has recommendations:
• Wear long-sleeved shirts and
long pants
• Treat clothes with a repellent
that has permethrin as the active
ingredient
• Stay in places with air conditioning or window screens
• Use an insect repellent with
citronella, DEET or IR3535 as an
active ingredient on exposed skin

Calling all veterans of the most
recent wars in Afghanistan, Iraq,
Gulf War, and Bosnia.
I am asking you to take time to
read this urgent report on the current state of the local, state and
national veteran organizations.
One of the oldest veteran organizations is the Disabled American
Veterans (DAV). First let me share
some background information on
the DAV.
When service men and women are overseas fighting for our
country, all they want is to come
home. But when our heroes return,
many with life-altering mental and
physical injuries, coping with the
realities of daily life is more of a
challenge than before. Veterans
making the transition back to civilian life must overcome many
obstacles. The DAV provides programs that address their overall
health and well-being. Beyond
helping hundreds of thousands of
veterans (from all eras) access
available government benefits,
the DAV funds rehabilitations and
counseling programs and links
veterans to job training programs
and work to address homelessness.
All DAV services are free!
DAV is dedicated to a single
purpose: fulfilling our promises to
the men and women who served.
DAV does this by ensuring that
veterans and their families can
access the full range of services
available to them; fighting for the
interests of America’s injured heroes on Capitol Hill; and educating
the public about the great sacrifices and needs of veterans transitioning back to civilian life. DAV,
a non-profit organization with 1.2
million members, was founded in
1920 and chartered by the U.S.
Congress in 1932.
As you can see, the DAV was organized by our great grandfathers
after World War I. The founders
found it necessary to form this organization to help and support our
veteran heroes and their spouses
and dependents. When I think about it, I realize
that they organized this veteran
organization with the intent that
its mission statement and administration would be passed down to
future veterans. Let me suggest to
you young veterans that this organization is waiting for your generation to take over the DAV and
keep its mission statement going. Present members are getting
older and the future of the DAV is
in the hands to come in with your
new ideas and new culture and
bring it to a new level that better
serves the current needs of our veterans and their dependents.
DAV has no political action
committee and does not endorse
candidates for political office.
DAV was instrumental in the
formation the first Veteran’s Bureau, a forerunner of today’s Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
I know that some of you have
started forming your own groups
and that’s good because it shows
that you care for you fellow vets
that have served and for those that
are currently in harms way.
So, what’s going to happen to
the this DAV organization that our
great grandfathers formed and has
been evolving through the years
and continues improve on the
ways and means to better serve our
veterans and their families??
WE need you young veterans
to become members of the Local
DAV Chapter 169 and eventually

to Five Points Museum at Moody

Fest and Five Points.
The more than 50 art cars and
low riders on exhibit will display
a variety of painting and sculptural techniques, including welding and metal craft, gluing and
assemblage, and collage. Art cars
scheduled to appear include “Rex
Rabbit” by Larry Fuente and several exquisitely detailed low riders
by the Leal Brother from Corpus
Christi. All of the art cars have
won top honors at the Orange
Show Houston Art Car Parade and
several can be found on display all
year round at Five Points Museum
of Contemporary Art in Victoria.
From April 16 through May
30, 2016, Five Points Museum of
Contemporary Art will be exhibiting Lost Worlds: New Drawings
and Sculpture by Houston-based
artist Noah Edmundson. This exhibition features a range of new
work, with intricate drawings,
metal sculpture, and an example
of Mr. Edmundson’s own art car
work. Evolving from skilled oil
field equipment fabricator, Mr. Edmundson has been working as an
artist for over 30 years. His work
has been exhibited and commissioned throughout Texas and the
United States. He currently is the
director and curator of Houston’s
Art Car Museum.
Five Points Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 1201 North
Moody in Victoria and is open to

UHV to construct classrooms, offices on University North third floor

University of Houston-Victoria
leaders have finalized plans for
the third floor of University North
and will create a one-stop shop for
prospective and current students in
UHV University West.
While the first two floors of University North opened in August,
the third floor was left unfinished.
The UHV Facility & Space Planning Committee has been meeting
to determine the best use for the
space.
The 20,355-square-foot third
floor will house UHV Finance,
Business Services, Human Resources, Small Business Development Center, two 50-seat classrooms and eight faculty offices.
Also relocating to the floor are
budget and capital projects staff,
and the Help Desk. The Bursar’s
Office will remain in University
West.
Wayne Beran, UHV vice president for administration and finance, said the committee first
identified the need for two large
classrooms and eight faculty offices. Next, members discussed what
made the most sense to occupy the
rest of the space.
“We really liked the idea of having a one-stop shop for students
and their families on the first floor
of University West, but to do that
we needed to free up some space,”
Beran said. “The idea is for a student and their parents to walk into
University West and be able to
visit all the offices they need to get
enrolled at the university, so having all Student Affairs staff in one
place made a lot of sense.”
The UH Board of Regents recently authorized Chancellor Renu
Khator to negotiate contracts up to
$6 million to finish the third floor
of University North and make
renovations in the University West
and University Center buildings.
UHV is using capital construction
bonds appropriated by the Texas
Legislature during the 2015 session. These bonds, formally called
Tuition Revenue Bonds, are statebacked debt to finance capital
projects.
The third-floor build-out is estimated to cost about $4 million,

$2 million will be spent on renovations.
“These renovations will give
us more room to operate as the
university continues to expand,”
Svetlik said. “We see this as a way
to solve some of our space issues
until a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics building
is completed in a few years.”
The plan also adds faculty offices elsewhere, plus additional
space for other departments. Moving the Small Business Development Center from the first and
second floors to the third floor of
University North will open up five
additional offices for School of
Business Administration faculty
members on the second floor. In
addition, the current capital proj-
ects suite on the second floor of
University West will be converted
to four faculty offices.
Moving the Help Desk to University North also will free up
more space for Technology Services on the second floor of the
University Center. Likewise, the
relocation of two faculty offices
will provide more room for Marketing & Communications and
University Advancement on the
third floor of the University Center.
Svetlik expects to have an architect in place by the end of March.
After the design plans are completed, UHV will seek bids for a
contractor. Construction could be
completed by the end of 2016,
Svetlik said.
Work on the third floor should
not interfere with classes and
events on the first two floors, although there will be times though
when it’s louder than usual, Svetlik said.
“We’re hoping a lot of the construction work can be completed
during the summer when there is
less traffic in the building,” she
said.
University North is home to the
UHV School of Business Administration, SBDC, Career Services,
Disability Services and the new
Regional Center for Economic
Development. Public events take
place in the building’s MultiPurpose Room, the Kay and Ron
Walker Auditorium, and the Donna and Roger Welder Executive
Conference Room.

and recorded 12 local and visiting bands live to vinyl for Never
Records, inspiring the fest to start
its own label that will record vinyl

for children at the local zoo, magic

There will be a charge for Spring
Carnival booths, games, food and
drinks. A portion of the carnival
proceeds will benefit VC clubs
and the Relay for Life of Victoria
County event.
VC organizations participating in the event include the TRiO
Club, Student Government Association, Associate Degree Nursing – Student Nurses Association,
United Campus Ministry, International Society of Automation and

CREAM OF CABBAGE SOUP
4 cups water
2 tablespoons chicken bouillon
granules
3 cups diced peeled potatoes
1 cup finely chopped onions
1 cup diced peeled rutabaga or
summer squash
½ cup diced carrots
6 cups chopped cabbage
1 cup chopped celery
½ cup chopped green bell pepper
1 garlic clove, minced
1-teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dried dill weed
1-cup butter
1-cup all-purpose flour
2 cups milk
2 cups chicken broth
½ pound process American
cheese, cubed
½ teaspoon dried thyme
Pepper to taste
Additional milk, optional
1. In a Dutch oven or soup kettle,
bring water and bouillon to a boil.
Add potatoes, onion, rutabaga and
carrots. Reduce heat, cover and
simmer 5 minutes.
2. Add cabbage, celery and green
pepper. Simmer, uncovered for
5 minutes or until vegetables are
crisp-tender. Add garlic, salt and
dill.
3. In a saucepan, melt butter. Stir
in flour and cook over medium
heat, stirring, until golden brown.
Gradually add milk and broth, stirring until smooth. Add cheese,
thyme and pepper. Cook on low
heat until cheese melts. Stir into
vegetable mixture. Simmer 5 minutes. Thin with milk, if necessary.
4. Yields: 12 to 14 servings (3½
quarts)
LUCK OF THE IRISH CORNED
BEEF BRISKET
4-5 lbs. corned beef brisket with
seasoning packet
3 quarts water
2 onions, halved and stuck with 2
cloves each
6 carrots, peeled and halved
1 large head cabbage, cut into 8
wedges
2 bay leaves
3 sprigs fresh parsley
12 peppercorns, crushed
12 coriander seeds
11-inch cinnamon stick
1. Place corned beef and seasoning
packet in large heavy pot; add water. Bring to a boil and simmer for
1 hour. Add onions and carrots.
Bring to a boil and skim off fat.
2. Add remaining ingredients,
reduce heat to medium-low and
cover. Simmer approximately 2-4
hours until beef is tender. When
brisket pierces easily, it is ready.
3. Drain the water, place brisket
on a platter and let stand about 10
minutes. Slice diagonally across
the grain and serve with cabbage,
carrots and onion. Serves 8.
IRISH SODA BREAD
2 cups flour
1-teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon nutmeg
1½-tablespoon sugar
6 tablespoons shortening
2/3 cups raisins, brown or golden
or mixed
2 teaspoons caraway
1-cup buttermilk
1. Preheat oven to 375ºF.
2. In a large bowl sift together the
flour, baking soda, salt, nutmeg,
and sugar. Using a pastry blender
or fingertips, work the shortening
into the flour until the consistency
is the same as that of small peas.
Stir in the raisins and caraway and
mix to distribute evenly.
3. Gradually stir in the buttermilk,
¼ cup at a time, using only enough
to allow the dough to come together. Knead the dough for 1-2
minutes.
4. Shape the dough into a round
loaf and place on a greased baking
sheet. Cut an “X” on the top and
over the sides of the loaf. Bake
for 45 minutes or until the bread
sounds hollow when tapped. Cool
on rack.
GREEN VELVET CAKE
1½ cups oil
2 eggs
½ teaspoon green food coloring
1-tablespoon vinegar
1-cup buttermilk
1½ cups sugar
1-teaspoon vanilla extract
2½ cups flour
1-teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
FLUFFY WHITE FROSTING
3 tablespoons meringue powder
½ cup cold-water
2 cups sugar
¼ cup white corn syrup
½ cup water
1. Combine eggs, sugar, oil and
vinegar in bowl. Mix well. Sift
flour and soda together. Add to
egg mixture alternately with buttermilk, mixing well after addition. Blend in vanilla and food
coloring. Pour into 3 greased and
floured 8” cake pans.
2. Bake at 350ºF for 25 minutes.
Cool. Frost between layers, top
and side of cake. Sprinkle chopped
pistachio nuts on top. For Frosting
beat meringue powder and ½ cup
of cold water until stiff, about 4
minutes.
3. Mix sugar, corn syrup and ½
cup of water in a 2-quart saucepan.
Bring to a boil. Cool slightly.
4. Slowly add syrup to meringue
mixture while beating on low. After adding all syrup to the mixture,
turn beaters on high.
5. Beat for about 4 minutes until
stiff and glossy.
