‘A Night to Remember’ honors Tino Duran

On Saturday, May 7, the
Alzheimer’s Association of San
Antonio and South Texas honored La Prensa’s Tino Duran
for all of his hard work and
dedication to the city of San
Antonio.
Over 400 people gathered
at the Fair Oaks Ranch Golf &
Country Club to raise money
to “eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement
of research; to provide and
enhance care and support for
all affected; and to reduce the
risk of dementia through the
promotion of brain health.”
Tino Duran was a tough
Alazan-Apache Courts kid
who was kicked out of six
elementary schools because
he had a discipline problem.
“I didn’t have a discipline
problem,” said Tino Duran,
CEO of La Prensa. “The problem was I only spoke Spanish!
However, I was determined
to succeed, and I mastered
the English language. I became student body president,
ROTC colonel, and later I was
inducted to the Sydney Lanier
High School Hall of Fame.”
After high school, Tino

por U.S. Department of Health
para un programa de becas que
beneficiará a 800 empleados
que laboran en diferentes posiciones en el campo de la salud.
Con este recurso recibirán
entrenamiento para obtener
un mejor nivel en su carrera y,
consecuentemente, mejorar su
nivel económico en beneficio
personal y de su familia.
El martes el Dr. Bruce Leslie,
Chancellor de Alamo Colleges,
informó sobre el fondo en conferencia con los medios de información. Asimismo, apuntó
que los estudiantes elegidos
que cursen carreras en el campo de la salud o empleados
de instituciones médicas o de
asistencia social se beneficiarán
con becas en este programa
de 5 años Health Profession
Opportunity Grant (HPOG).

recibirán entrenamiento para
enfermeras certificadas, técnicos en cuidado de pacientes, asistentes de doctores,
farmacéuticos y personal administrativo y de oficina en
instituciones médicas, para lo

esta iniciativa.
Durante su entrenamiento,

Antonio is adding more destinations where the community
can learn, be fit and preserve
the environment — including a
world-class park on the South
Side.
The San Antonio River Foundation (SARF) celebrated a
groundbreaking ceremony on
Wednesday morning to begin
construction of Confluence Park
at its future site located at 310
W. Mitchell Street. The park,

to date, will provide hands-on
learning, environmental education and community connectivity along the Mission Reach
Ecosystem Restoration and
Recreation Project.
At hand to celebrate the opening of a new $10 million community investment were SARF

ward thanks to leading global
resources company BHP Billiton that provided a $2.4 million
gift for the construction to move
at a rapid pace.
As the project started, Scott
reflected back to a time when
it was an only an idea 10 years
ago to make the park come to
life. Now that the moment has
come, Scott explained that the
San Antonio River Authority
has worked hard for this moment to build a resourceful
place that will work all muscles,
including the brain for the community.

Highlands High senior
for community leadership wins Congressional High
School Art Competition

Bexar County Tax AssessorCollector Albert Uresti was
honored by the League of
United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) District 15 for
implementing creative and
innovative ways to facilitate
the paying of property taxes
for hard working families and
avoiding hardships during tax
season. LULAC District 15
represents over 85 LULAC
Councils.
The recognition award was
presented by LULAC at the
District 15 Convention Luncheon on May 7 at La Hacienda Santa Maria Hall.
“You have been an excellent role model to our Hispanic community by creating
a model of excellent customer
service and great efficiency.
You have been a great friend
and supporter of LULAC,
and we are immensely proud
of your hard work and accomplishments,” wrote Lupe
Torres, LULAC Council 15

celebration this week for Oscar
Pinedo, a graduating senior at
Highlands High School in San
Antonio, who was the winner
of U.S. Representative Lloyd
Doggett’s (D-San Antonio)
annual Congressional High
School Art Competition –the
first such winner from Highlands High School.
Oscar’s original piece, “It’s
Getting Pretty Western Out
Here,” featuring his father rid-
ing a horse, will hang in the
U.S. Capitol in Washington,
D.C. for a full year, providing
him with national exposure
as he represents San Antonio.
Following graduation, Oscar
plans to attend Palo Alto College where he will major in
business and a minor in art.

Living in the moment—best message
for graduates and parents

As a former member of
the North East Independent
School District, I have been
privileged to address several
graduating classes from 19952005. My most recent commencement address was last
year at The Winston School.
Although the themes and
structures varied somewhat,
a core principle remained
consistent: time.
When you’re young with
your cap and gown in hand,
you can’t wait for time to pass.
The world beckons you. This
is true for both high school
and college graduates.
My messages always urged
the graduates to tap the brakes
a bit. Life will come quickly
enough.
To illustrate this point, I
used to talk about my first
year in law school at The
University of Texas at Austin.
I had never missed Mother’s
Day—but that year—I had
decided that with final exams
approaching, mom would understand if I skipped Mother’s
Day in 1981.
I called her and explained
the rigors of law school life
at UT—people were lined up
for the law library to open. If
I came home to see her—then
by the time I got back to Austin—in all likelihood, every
seat would be filled.
Mom understood. “There’s
always next year!” she said
cheerfully.
So, I packed my books into
my car and traveled to the law
school. On the way, I heard a
song that made such an impression on me that I’ve told
graduates about it frequently.
The song began with a
man who decided to skip his
mother’s birthday. He had a
myriad of excuses—his wife
had been sick, they were busy
fixing the house and other assorted reasons. So, he told his
mom, this year, he was going
to skip her birthday.
His mother was very gracious on the phone. She hoped
his wife felt better soon and
wished him good luck with his
home repair projects. She’ll
see him some other time.
When the man hung up
the phone, he felt a twinge
of guilt. He decided to buy
his mother some flowers and
have them delivered on her
birthday.
He approached the town
flower shop, and he saw a
young boy looking very sad
sitting on the steps. “What’s
wrong there, young fella?” the
man asked.
The boy explained. “Today
is my mother’s birthday, and I
don’t have any money to buy
her flowers.”
The man felt badly for the
child and took out some money from his wallet. “Here—
take this—I bet you can get her
some nice flowers with this!”
The young boy’s eyes lit up.
He thanked the man—then
ran off into the flower shop.
He must have examined every
red rose with the greatest care.
Soon, he picked out six of
the most beautiful red roses in
the shop and ran out the door.
He stopped—looked back to
the man—and said, “Thanks
mister! Mom’s going to love
these flowers!”
The older gentleman felt
good about his deed. He
instructed the florist to wire
some flowers to his mother.
After paying for them, he
drove away.
Suddenly, he saw the young
boy racing towards a fork in
the road. If you take one side—
you go back into town. But, if
you take another side—you go
into the town cemetery.
As you might have guessed
by now, the young boy ran
into the town cemetery. The
man stopped the car and followed the child.
The boy came upon a freshly
dug grave. He slowly knelt by
its side. He slowly put each
rose on the grave—then very
gently patted the soil. Quietly,
he uttered, “Happy Birthday,
Mama.”
The man watched this in silence. As he observed the child
pray at his mother’s grave, he
remembered his own mother.
He recalled every sacrifice—
every deed—every moment—
that his own mother had spent
to make him the success that
he was today.
I heard this entire song—
and by the time I approached
the law school building, I
resolved: this would be the
last time that I missed my
Mother’s Day—or birthday—
or any other significant day.
I tell this story to graduates
to let them know a simple
truth. Life is beautiful. Yes—
sometimes, it is difficult. But it
is beautiful—especially when
the people you love the most
are still around.
I implored them to recall
these words—and the story of
the young boy at his mother’s
grave.
Graduates, you can fly all
over the world. You can travel
to ancient cities in Europe.
You can spend time in Asia.
Whatever to you defines paradise—you can discover it
somewhere.
But one day—and this day
will come—even these visions
of paradise will not equal the
moments of sipping a cup of
coffee with dear old dad—or
enjoying a Spurs game with
your mom.
God has blessed us with a
special paradise.
We call it “time.”
And one day, these moments
will be joyful memories—an
encyclopedia of laughter and
tears. Or—as Don Draper
described a Kodak Carousel in
an episode of Mad Men a few
years ago—a “Time Machine.”
Good luck, graduates—from
the bottom of my heart.
Have a wonderful graduation night—and look for the
folks behind the cameras. To
them—you’ve always been
their paradise.

Fundraising efforts for S.A.’s sister
city of Kumamoto, Japan kicked-off
During City Council on
Thursday, 17 community partners successfully kicked-off
fundraising efforts to help San
Antonio’s sister city of Kumamoto, Japan.
Kumamoto was recently hit
by multiple devastating earthquakes that led to incredible
infrastructure damage and the
loss of 49 lives with thousands
injured. This natural disaster
led to the community coming
together to raise funds to help
San Antonio’s sister city in its
time of need.
“It is heartbreaking what
happened to Kumamoto,” said
Mayor Ivy R. Taylor. “But the
warm and passionate response
from many of our community
partners who want to help our
sister city is a testament to the
bond that has united our two
cities for almost 30 years.”
District 6 Councilman Ray
Lopez who used a point of personal privilege to announce the
fundraising efforts said, “I have
led multiple economic development trade missions to Japan
and the culture there is one that
stands close with family, which
is similar to the culture we have
in San Antonio. As a sister city
to Kumamoto, we are family,
and as such, I hope that our
citizens will consider giving to
this cause.”
Led by the Japan-America Society of San Antonio (JASSA),
funds will be used to help 1)
the victims and survivors of
the earthquake, 2) rebuild Kumamoto’s infrastructure and
3) help rebuild the Kumamoto
Castle, a landmark that has
relevance to our sister city akin
to the Alamo in San Antonio.
“In the wake of the earthquake disaster in and around
Kumamoto City, San Antonio
organizations, such as JASSA,
are rallying to raise funds to
help provide relief to the citi-
zens of Kumamoto and to help
reconstruct and rebuild damaged areas,” said JASSA President Martha Fabrique. “JASSA
is happy to help lead the fundraising efforts; any donation
provided by San Antonians
means so much to help support
our Japanese sister city.”
On behalf of Bexar County,
Judge Nelson Wolff provided
words of support to the cause:
“Bexar County has a deep relationship with Japan. We are appreciative of the corporate and
social investments they have
made in San Antonio, but the
fact is these investments would
have never happened without
our sister city, Kumamoto. The
Commissioners Court stands
ready to partner with JASSA
and do our part to support all
those affected.”
The first major contributor to
this effort was also announced:

“We have worked together
to enhance the beauty, enjoyment and stewardship of San
Antonio. With this groundbreaking, we are embarking on
a new chapter to create more
availability to watershed base
and environmental education
programs for citizens of all
ages,” stated the SARA general
manager. “Confluence Park will
be the best place to learn from
a beautiful outdoor classroom
along this wonderful mission
reached project and experience
the ecosystem of the San Antonio River.”
This urban ecosystem restoration project will also increase
Confluence Park’s quality,
quantity and diversity of plants
and animals along the eight
mile stretch in the San Antonio
River, located in the South of
downtown. The process to
make the project possible was
made by Allen who wanted the
park to be thorough enough for
many to seek knowledge about
rain and even to seek shelter
when rain pours.
“The park will be divided
into four ecotype regions, and
each will be planted with native
Texas species that represent the
different ecosystem types within
Central and South Texas,”
explained Allen. “We think
of it as one living organism
where rain will be captured and
translated into an underground
system and will be re-used. The
primary pavilion itself is made
up of a complex geometry that
is designed to funnel water into
an underground network of
channels that then gets pushed
into that system.”
The park will also offer hike
and bike trails along the Mis-

sion Reach section of the San
Antonio River Walk to encourage people to become more
involved with their river and
its stewardship for many years
to come. Once the park is built,
it will give many a future in
learning about the importance
of the environment, as well as
how to save the environment
one generation at a time.
“This park will be an enduring project where generations
will explore, learn, enjoy, create
more memories and continue to
connect them with the history
and culture of San Antonio. It
will empower a generation of
people committed to a sustainable future,” concluded Councilwoman Viagran.
The project is expected to be

UIW to offer top graduating
seniors direct admission to
health programs
The University of the Incarnate Word, a longtime leader
in healthcare education, has
announced a new initiative
available this fall to outstanding high school seniors with
strong academic ability seeking
advanced degrees in nursing,
pharmacy, physical therapy,
optometry or medicine.
UIW’s new Direct Admit
Health Professions Program
provides provisional admission into one of the university’s professional programs
for Texas high school seniors
ranking in the top five percent
of their class after their junior
year.
Students can choose from
the following professional
programs:
• Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) - Ila Faye Miller
School of Nursing and Health
Professions
• Doctor of Optometry
(O.D.) – Rosenberg School of
Optometry
• Doctor of Osteopathic
Medicine (D.O.) – School of
Osteopathic Medicine
• Doctor of Pharmacy
(Pharm.D.) – Feik School of
Pharmacy
• Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) – School of Physical Therapy
The initiative features an
added bonus to help students
attain their goals - a $2,500
scholarship per year for fulltime study, renewable for up
to eight years. This scholarship
is in addition to any UIW academic award for which the student is eligible and continues
into the professional program.
Students will be required to
maintain an acceptable GPA
to continue in the program
and will also be required to
complete a program interview
by the respective professional
school.
“The UIW Direct Admit Program will grant highly qualified students the opportunity
to jump start their careers in
the health professions by allowing them to focus on learning instead of stressing over
trying to get accepted into a
healthcare program,” said Dr.
Lou Agnese, UIW president.
“We want our students to concentrate on getting the finest
education possible to ensure
they are prepared to meet the
growing need for healthcare
providers in our state.”
Students whose high schools
do not record student rankings or those who are homeschooled may still qualify
for the Direct Admit Health
Professions Program if they
meet certain criteria. For more

States Air Force. When his
duty was over, he attended St.
Mary’s University and received
a bachelor’s degree in political
science and later a master’s degree in public administration.
Upon his graduation from
St. Mary’s in 1963, he worked
for the Bexar County Juvenile
Probation Department. A year
later, Senator Ralph Yarborough contacted Tino informing him about his appointment
as executive assistant to the
Lyndon B. Johnson Administration.
“I loved working with Lyndon B. Johnson,” recalled
Duran. “Every position I’ve
ever had, I owe to my heavenly
Father. God is the reason I
was able to do a good job and
work with such great people!”
After his run with the president, Tino went on to hold
multiple high-ranking positions such as executive assistant to Mayor John Gatti,
executive director for the
Housing Authority of Bexar
County, president of the National Association of Hispanic
Publications and executive
vice-president of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce.
“People always ask me how I
made it this far, and every day
I tell them I have a great God!”
On Saturday, Tino touched
the crowd with his faith-filled
speech. Even though he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s two
years ago, it hasn’t stopped
him from having faith in the
Lord.
“My definition of faith is
‘daring the soul beyond what
the eyes can see,’” said Duran
during his speech. “If you
don’t have faith, you don’t
have anything! Every morning when you wake up, ask
the Lord for faith. Raise your
hands, praise him and ask him
to guide you through your
troubles. Even though I have
Alzheimer’s, I know it’s nothing I can’t handle!”

Fit Family Challenge gets families moving together this summer
Every summer since 2010,
San Antonio Sports has provided families the chance to play,
exercise and develop healthy
habits through the Fit Family
Challenge presented by Blue
Cross Blue Shield of Texas.

joined San Antonio Sports officials in challenging families to
get active and learn about their
health and fitness at the kickoff
for the 2016 Fit Family Challenge at City Hall on May 11.
Organized by San Antonio
Sports, the seventh annual Fit
Family Challenge will offer
free fitness activities and health
screenings, as well as incentives to San Antonio families
between May and August. Incentives consist of $25,000 in
cash and fitness prizes, including sports and movie tickets,
$1,000 drawings every three
weeks at family-friendly Saturday Big Events, and a grand
prize drawing at the end of the
summer for a $1,000 gift card.

program aimed at motivating
families to break away from a
sedentary lifestyle, get out of
the house and come together
for fun, fitness-focused events.
“San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge has a track record
in helping families get healthy
together,” said Councilman
Rey Saldaña. “District 4 is
proud to be part of this program with our free D4 Heroes
5K launching it every summer.
Both are free, fun and accessible to everyone.”
The San Antonio Sports Fit
Family Challenge, presented
by Blue Cross Blue Shield of
Texas, is comprised of four
three-week sessions that run
from May 16-Aug. 13. It promotes a healthy lifestyle by
encouraging people to make
changes, such as integrating
a walk into everyday routines
and choosing water over sugary beverages and eating more
fruits and vegetables.
There are weekly free fitness
events located throughout the
city that include Zumba for
adults and teens, and fitness
classes for children three-13
years of age. The program is
open to all families in Bexar
County.
Participants are asked to 1)
exercise as a family at least
60 minutes a day, five days a

choices; 3) keep a fitness journal through a tracking log
that can be downloaded at
fitfamilychallenge.com; and
4) take a health screening four
times over the summer. If they
attend at least three weekly fitness events during any of the
four sessions and take a health
screening, they are eligible for
a prize drawing of $1,000 at
that session’s Big Event. They
also earn cumulative points towards rewards including sports
and movie tickets and $1,000
gift cards.
In an effort to eliminate barriers to participation, the weekly
events take place at schools in
the target neighborhoods. A
grant from the Baptist Health
Foundation provides funds for
faith-based outreach. New this
year, Baptist Temple Church
will serve as a weekly site.

The Fit Family Challenge offers free fitness activities and
health screenings, along with
incentives that will keep families motivated throughout the
summer.”
Yvonne Hernandez has been
participating in the Fit Family
Challenge for four summers.
She started because of health issues. “Fit Family Challenge has
motivated me and has provided
me with the resources to lead a
healthy lifestyle,” explains Hernandez. “Zumba has become
part of my daily routine, an extension of my work day with a
strong supportive crew with my
friends and workout buddies,
the Zumba Chicks. A quote I
saw recently perfectly describes
why I continue to participate in
Fit Family Challenge activities:
‘I work out because I love my
body, not because I hate it.’”

registered to run the Fit Family
Challenge kickoff event, the D4
Heroes 5K, a free, chipped and
timed race offered through the

Comentarios... La caída de Marco y Ted
Hay veces
en que ya no
reconozco a
Estados Unidos. El mismo país que
se fundó con
Jorge Ramos
inmigrantes
acaba de escoger como candidato presidencial a un hombre que
quiere deportar a 11 millones de
inmigrantes en dos años. Esta
no parece la misma nación que
me recibió tan generosamente
hace 33 años y a muchos más
después de mí.
¿Cómo explicamos el fenómeno de Donald Trump? Fácilmente. En Estados Unidos hay
millones de personas que piensan como él y que comparten sus
comentarios racistas en contra
de los inmigrantes latinos y en
contra de los musulmanes. Nunca había recibido tantos insultos
en las redes sociales como ahora
(y espero muchos más después
de esta columna).
Trump está convirtiendo en
normal lo que antes eran comentarios y comportamientos
castigados socialmente. Estamos
en un extrañísimo paréntesis
histórico en Estados Unidos en
que se vale expresar en público
todos tus prejuicios. Los demonios andan sueltos.
Denigrar a las mujeres públicamente, acusar de violadores a
todo un grupo étnico o discriminar contra una religión hubiera
descalificado a cualquier aspi-
rante presidencial hace cuatro
años. Hoy no. Hoy lo convierte
en candidato del partido Republicano.
Por eso hay días en que no
reconozco a Estados Unidos.
Nunca me había tocado cubrir
una campaña como esta. La
recordaré, por supuesto, por los
exabruptos y los extremismos
de Trump. Pero también porque
por primera vez en la historia
hubo dos candidatos latinos a la
presidencia: los senadores Marco
Rubio y Ted Cruz.
Lo peor que hicieron Rubio
y Cruz fue tratar de parecerse a
Trump. No entiendo todavía por
qué dos hijos de inmigrantes decidieron darle la espalda a otros
inmigrantes como sus padres.
(Los padres de Rubio y el padre
de Cruz nacieron en Cuba).
Cruz quería deportar a 11 mi
llones, como Trump. Rubio
incomprensiblemente se opuso
a un plan de legalización de
indocumentados que él mismo
como senador había pensado,
planeado y propuesto.
Rubio y Cruz rompieron
una noble tradición en que los
políticos hispanos a nivel nacional, independientemente de su
partido, siempre defendían a los
más vulnerables, a los indocumentados. Ellos decidieron no
hacerlo. Fue muy triste.
Más triste fue verlos pelear en
un debate presidencial para ver
cuál de los dos tenía la posición
más antiinmigrante. Su deseo
de ser como Trump de insultar
como Trump y, por supuesto,
de ganar como Trump oscureció
las grandes características de
liderazgo que los convirtieron
en dos de los más jóvenes senadores de Estados Unidos.
También recuerdo con pena
ajena cuando Rubio presumió
tener dedos más largos que los
de Trump o cuando Cruz el
mismo día que lo derrotaron
en Indiana y se retiró de la contienda acusó a Trump de ser un
mentiroso patológico y perdió la
cordura en televisión nacional.
Trump los entrampó.
Marco y Ted quisieron ser
como Donald respecto a los
inmigrantes. Pero, afortuna
damente, no hay otro como
Trump.
Como todos sabemos, Estados Unidos es un país que
tiene un proceso religioso para
rescatar a los perdedores. Prime
ro confiesan sus errores en
público, luego hacen un acto de
contrición, prometen no repetir
sus pecados y al final se presentan como si hubieran renacido.
Rubio y Cruz tendrán que pasar
por este proceso de expiación
de culpas. Pero los dos son demasiado talentosos e inteligentes
como para retirarse de la política
después de una caída, por más
estrepitosa que haya sido.
Además, son muy jóvenes y se
pueden equivocar muchas veces
más... hasta ganar. Rubio tiene
44 años y Cruz 45 (aunque los
dos parezcan mayores). De tal
manera que se pueden lanzar en
el 2020, 2024, 2028, o hasta
que lleguen a la Casa Blanca. El
tiempo está de su lado.
Y la demografía también.
Cada mes más de 60 mil jóvenes
hispanos cumplen 18 años, la
edad de votar, y en tres décadas
seremos más de 100 millones
de latinos. Somos un creciente e
indiscutible poder electoral.
Muchos latinos, los conozco,
hubieran querido estar orgu
llosos de Rubio y Cruz y elegir
al primer presidente hispano de
Estados Unidos. Pero nunca se
sintieron a gusto con las posiciones antiinmigrantes de los
senadores cubanoamericanos.
La política es brutal. Convirtió
a dos hijos de inmigrantes en
portavoces de un movimiento
que culpó injustamente a los
indocumentados de los principales problemas económicos y
de seguridad del país.
Lección para la próxima elección: Siempre es mejor ser uno
mismo y poder regresar con los
tuyos sin bajar la mirada. Marco
y Ted pudieron ser los nuevos
héroes de la comunidad latina
y, en cambio, decidieron parecerse al villano. Así perdieron
dos veces.

Just a Thought: Some San Antonio history
As a former
middle school
and high
school history teacher,
I encouraged
my students
Steve Walker over the years
to read history
books on their own for their
own enjoyment.
I also encouraged them to
come up with some historical
facts that they could use to challenge their classmates in a game
of historical trivia. Two of those
high schools were Memorial in
Edgewood and McCollum in
Harlandale.
We would write down some
interesting facts we read and
make questions out of them to
bring to class to see who knew
more history than others. They
were up for the challenge. Each
time we did it, the winner would
earn an extra 100 to average in
their grades for the semester,
which proved to be an added
incentive. It was a fun activity.
In an Express-News article
I remember reading last year,
the writer listed over 40 questions about the history of San
Antonio to see how much the
reader knew about the Alamo
City. Surprisingly, very little
of it referenced the history of
the many contributions of Hispanics to the local community.
It was more on historical old
buildings and businesses, which
was still kind of fun trying to
answer them.
It brought back sharp memories of my classroom filled with
excited students raising their
hands to give an answer in
hopes of winning the competition. I thought today’s column
would address some historical
facts about San Antonio primarily related to our city’s Hispanic
heritage.
Did you know that activist
Adina de Zavala lived at the
Menger Hotel downtown from
1926-1932? She was born in
1861 and she died in 1955.
She was an elementary teacher,
historian and preservationist of
Texas History. Her father was
Augustine, son of Lorenzo de
Zavala, who was the first vice
president of the Republic of
Texas. As a prolific writer, she
authored the history and legends
of the Alamo and other missions
in and around San Antonio.
Question: Who likes to eat
lots of Fritos? They were invented here in San Antonio in
1932. My father was offered
the opportunity to buy stocks
from Fritos really cheap in the
50s, but opted to purchase other
stocks that didn’t do so well.
There went my inheritance!
Another interesting fact about
San Antonio is that from 17311837, 113 Hispanics served
consecutively as mayor before
an Anglo, John Smith, was
elected. In 1842, Juan Seguin
served one year, followed by
another Hispanic mayor, Henry
Cisneros, who was elected in
1981 and served until 1989.
Since then, Ed Garza (01-05)
and Julián Castro (09-14) have
served as mayor.
A number of my government
class students at Memorial volunteered to work for Mayor
Cisneros’ campaign, stuffing
envelopes and passing out fliers. We were an active part of
the first modern day Hispanic
mayor’s election since 1842!
Do you remember the name
of the 80th United States Attorney General from San Antonio?
Hint: He was appointed in February 2005 by President George
W. Bush, becoming the highest-
ranking Hispanic in executive
government up to that time.
Alberto Gonzales was also the
first Hispanic to serve as White
House Counsel, and earlier he
had been Bush’s General Counsel during his governorship of
Texas. Gonzales had also served
as secretary of state of Texas and
a Texas Supreme Court justice.
Local attorney, Roy Barrera
Sr. (68-69) became the first Hispanic Texas secretary of state
followed by San Antonio native Alberto Gonzales (98-99),
San Antonio Congressman
Henry Cuellar (2001-2002) and
hometown icon Hope Andrade
(08-12).
Many voters recall before he
became a congressman, Henry
B. Gonzalez was the first Hispanic to be elected a Texas State
senator. He was followed by Dr.
Joe Bernal and the first female
Hispanic senator from San
Antonio, Leticia Van de Putte.

Hispanic” for the readers of
La Prensa, I sign off with “As

Una comadre mía de México,
que hoy vive en la ciudad de
Santa Ana, California, ha sido
muy fiel a las creencias de la
Iglesia Católica. Su religión
ha dictaminado sus decisiones
políticas desde el momento que
llegó a Estados Unidos, especialmente una vez que adquirió la
ciudadanía norteamericana.
En políticas sociales, en base
a discusiones que tuvimos,
siempre ha demostrado tener
opiniones contrarias al aborto;
no ha aceptado los matrimonios
del mismo sexo y ha sido defensora del papel “tradicional” de la
mujer en la familia.
Por otra parte, en cuestiones de políticas económicas,
debido a que su esposo es un
empresario bastante exitoso (un
migrante boliviano), a menudo
se ha inclinado por las políticas
de mercado. Considera que el
sector privado es el motor de
la economía y que el aparato
estatal simplemente debería garantizar las transacciones entre
las empresas y los trabajadores
y/o viceversa.
No está de acuerdo en la intervención Estatal en la economía.
No le gusta que el gobierno
subsidie o cree oportunidades
especiales para algunos grupos
étnicos en detrimento de las
mayorías. En otras palabras,
mi comadre, quien es absolutamente una persona lindísima y
muy solidaria, siempre pensó válido el dicho que “el que trabaja
duro, tarde o temprano logrará
sus objetivos”.
En base a las conversaciones
que tuve últimamente, he podido apreciar su indecisión en torno a las elecciones presidencia
les de noviembre. Mi comadre
es una ideóloga conservadora,
pero hoy su partido político la
ha dejado con un candidato que
no profesa sus ideales políticos,
especialmente sus creencias
religiosas.
Donald Trump no solamente
ha expresado su repudio hacia
los migrantes indocumentados,
sino que ha insultado a toda
la nación mexicana. A pesar
de que mi comadre no está de
acuerdo con ciertas partes del
proyecto migratorio demócrata,
la actitud irrespetuosa de Do
nald Trump la ha hecho condenar sus comentarios. Siente que
el empresario de la melena rojiza
miente mucho y sus políticas sociales son demasiado liberales.
Como mi comadre, hay mi
llones de estadounidenses que
no comulgan ni con las políti-
cas y actitudes bochornosas de
Trump, ni con el sesgo liberal
de Hillary Clinton.
En tal sentido, estas poblaciones religiosas conservadoras no
tienen una alternativa real en
las elecciones presidenciales de
noviembre. Es una verdadera
tristeza que nuestro sistema
político bloquee sistemáticamente la emergencia de otros
partidos políticos que no sean
republicanos o demócratas.
Estoy consciente que es virtual
mente imposible cambiar el
sistema electoral del país, pero
creo que es un buen momento
para, por lo menos, discutirlo.
Tal vez, en un futuro lejano, mi
comadre y sus correligionarias
tengan la oportunidad de votar
por un candidato adecuado a
sus ideales políticos.

Falta de una alternativa real

Tanto los liberales como los
de centro-izquierda tienen, relativamente, una opción real con
Hillary Clinton en las elecciones
de presidenciales de noviembre.
Lo mismo se puede decir de un
sector conservador –económico
y étnico-radical de la derecha—
que facilitaron el dominio de
Donald Trump en las primarias
del Partido Republicano.
Me pregunto: ¿Qué pasa
con aquel grupo tradicional
de religiosos que normalmente
apoya a los candidatos republicanos? ¿Por quién van a votar
en las elecciones presidenciales?
¿Cuál de los dos, Hillary Clinton o Donald Trump, conseguirá su apoyo? ¿Será que estos
grupos religiosos se quedarán
en casa y no votarán por nadie?
Si nos remitimos a la historia,
podemos deducir que sin los
evangelistas, adventistas, mormones, testigos de Jehová, entre
otros grupos religiosos que exis
ten en el país, George W. Bush
no hubiese llegado a la Casa
Blanca. Es más, difícilmente
hubiese tenido la oportunidad
de gobernar su estado natal de
Texas.

CTRC celebrates cancer survivorship
with 5K run/walk on May 14
In a celebration of cancer
survivorship, people from
throughout San Antonio
who are receiving cancer
treatment or who have overcome cancer can run or walk
for free in the Cancer Therapy & Research Center’s
“Give Cancer the Boot!” 5K
Run/Walk.
The chip-timed run will
begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, at the UT
Health Science Center San
Antonio’s recreational running trail near Gold’s Gym,
7431 Merton Minter Drive,
in the South Texas Medical
Center.
“We hope that cancer
survivors will come out
and walk or run for as long
as they are able with the
hope that some will be well
enough to complete the
route,” said Mary Salazar,
a CTRC nurse practitioner
helping to organize the
event.
The fee for family members, friends and community
members is $20, which includes a T-shirt. “Our hope
is that this fee will help recoup expenses for this initial
run. If there are any profits,
they will go to the CTRC’s
Patient Assistance Fund,
which provides wellness
activities and specialized
assistance for CTRC cancer
patients,” Salazar said.
CTRC is part of the UT
Health Science Center San
Antonio, one of only four
elite National Cancer Institute-designed cancer centers
in Texas.

Estudio sobre administración de ácido tranexámico durante
el transporte médico por aire antes de llegar al hospital
(Prueba STAAMP, por sus siglas en inglés).
University Hospital, AirLIFE y UT Health Science Center San Antonio llevarán a cabo
un estudio clínico de investigación en el sur de Tejas, para poner a prueba el uso del
medicamento ácido tranexámico (TXA) en pacientes de trauma adultos que se encuentren
en estado de shock. Estamos llevando a cabo este estudio para ver si el administrar TXA
en la fase temprana después de sufrir un daño una lesión ayuda a reducir el índice de
muertes en pacientes con daños severos que muestren signos o síntomas de sangrado
significativo, antes de llegar al centro de traumatología. Esta medicina ha sido aprobada
para sangrado en otros tipos de condiciones, pero aún no ha sido aprobada para trauma.
Ciertos tipos de pacientes, daños o herida serán excluidos. Este estudio puede incluir
pacientes incapacitados para dar su consentimiento a participar.

named the 2015-16 NBA Basketball Executive of the Year,
the NBA announced Tuesday,
May 9.
Buford, in his 14th season
as the team’s general manager,
previously won the award in
2013-14 (That year the Spurs
won their fifth championship
by winning the NBA Finals in
five games vs. Miami Heat).
Buford totals 77 points and
received nine of 29 first-place
votes from a panel of fellow
team basketball executives
throughout the NBA. The Portland Trail Blazers’ Neil Olshey
finished second with 63 points
(10 first-place votes), and
2014-15 winner Bob Myers
of the Golden State Warriors
was third with 38 points (five
first-place votes). Executives
were awarded five points for
each first-place vote, three
points for each second-place
vote and one point for each
third-place vote.
Buford assembled a roster
that produced the best record
in franchise history (67-15).
The Spurs won at least 50
games for the 17th consecutive
season and captured their fifth
Southwest Division title in the
past six years. San Antonio
finished the regular season
40-1 at home, matching the
NBA record set by the 1985-
86 Boston Celtics.
Fueled by two-time reigning
Kia NBA Defensive Player of
the Year Kawhi Leonard, San
Antonio led the NBA in points
allowed (92.0 ppg) and defensive rating (96.6 points per
100 possessions). Leonard,
acquired by San Antonio on
draft night in 2011, also averaged a career-high 21.2 points,
ranked third in the NBA in

has begun a succession plan for
current head coach and general
manager Dan Hughes.
Ruth Riley has been named
Stars general manager. She will
be mentored in the position by
Hughes during the 2016 season. Hughes will conclude his
time with the franchise after the
2016 campaign and will work
alongside Riley to hire the new
head coach of the Stars at the
end of the WNBA season.
“I have truly enjoyed every
moment of my 16 years in the
WNBA, but I reached a point
personally and professionally
where it’s time for a change,”
said Hughes. “We are fortunate
to add Ruth Riley. She is very
bright, knows the women’s
game well and has a drive and
passion to succeed.
The future of the Stars is in
good hands, and I look forward
to assisting her as she learns
her new role. I’m excited for
my final season with the Stars
and will be forever thankful to
our players and coaches, the
great employees at SS&E and
our wonderful fans for all of
the support the support my
family and I have received here
in San Antonio during the last
decade.”
A two-time WNBA Coach of
the Year (2001, 2007), Hughes
has coached the most games in
league history (490) in his 16
WNBA seasons and has the
second most wins (230). In 15
years as a head coach – of the
Charlotte Sting, the Cleveland
Rockers and San Antonio –
Hughes has led his teams to
10 playoff appearances, four
Western Conference Finals and
one WNBA Finals.
He is the only coach in
WNBA history to take three different franchises to the playoffs.

Stars to a 24-10 mark, earning
the best record in the league,
the franchise’s first Western
Conference Championship
and its first trip to the WNBA

Riley played 13 seasons in
the WNBA before announcing
her retirement in 2014. She
won two championships with
the Shock (2003, 2006) and
was named to the 2003 WNBA
Finals MVP. Riley was selected
fifth overall by the Miami Sol
in the 2001 WNBA Draft and
was voted to represent the
Eastern Conference in the 2005
WNBA All-Star Game.
Riley was traded to the Silver Stars in 2007, where she
played five seasons from 20072011 and earned the Kim
Perrot Sportsmanship Award
in 2011. Additionally, Riley
earned and Olympic gold
medal with USA Basketball at
the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
Riley played for the Fighting Irish from 1997-2001 and
led the school to the 2001
NCAA Championship. She
received numerous accolades
her senior season including
Most Outstanding Player of
the Final Four, Naismith Player
of the Year, Big East Player of
the Year and Academic AllAmerican of the Year.
“Having played in San Antonio for five years, I know how
committed the organization is
to maintaining success through
a values-based culture that is
emblematic of this city. While
my vantage point has now
changed from the court to the
stands, I still carry the same
championship mentality, competitive spirit and commitment
to community that I had as a
player to this new position in
management,” said Riley.
“It is such a luxury to have a
legendary figure in the WNBA,
Dan Hughes, as a resource
and mentor. I am blessed to
have played in a league that I
love for 13 years, and I look
forward to this new role as the
GM. I am thrilled to have the
chance to return to the best
organization in sports and a
city that feels like home.”
Since her retirement, Riley
has focused on initiatives off
the court as an NBA Cares
Ambassador as well as serving
as a spokesperson for other
organizations. She is involved
in Nothing But Nets, which is
a global grassroots campaign
to raise awareness and funding to fight malaria, a leading
cause of death among children
in Africa.
She is a national spokesperson for NoKidHungry, a
campaign focused on ending
child hunger in America, where
one-in-five children are food
insecure. Additionally, Riley
co-founded inspire Transformation, which takes comprehensive approach to reducing
the effects and instances of
the AIDS pandemic in South
Africa. She also returned to
Notre Dame to earn an Executive MBA Degree from the
Mendoza College of Business
and will graduate in May.
The Stars open the 2016
season at home on Saturday,
May 14 against the Atlanta
Dream. Tipoff is set for 7
p.m. at the AT&T Center.

Wellmann, Fields named to
CoSIDA All-District Team

St. Mary’s seniors Sydney
Wellmann and Hannah Fields
have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District
Team, it was recently announced.
Wellmann, a Brenham, Texas native, has maintained a
3.63 grade-point average while
studying marketing. Fields, a
San Antonio native is a major
in chemistry with a 3.88 GPA.
On the field, Wellman has
accumulated numerous honors this season, most recently
being named to the NFCA AllRegion First Team. She also
has been named the Heartland
Conference Player of the Year
twice been named the national
hitter of the week.
She is batting .396 this
season with 16 home runs,
64 RBI and a .766 slugging
percentage. She has also drawn
38 walks and a school-record
13 hit-by-pitch for an on-base
percentage of .544. Wellmann
has also scored 45 runs and
doubled nine times for the No.
9-ranked Rattlers.
Fields has enjoyed a career
year of her own, batting .328
with 18 RBI and 36 runs
scored. She has doubled twice
and tripled twice in 36 hits. In
the field, she hasn’t committed
a single error in 63 fielding
opportunities.
Matt Smith named to the
CoSIDA All-District Team
St. Mary’s baseball player Matt
Smith has been named to the
CoSIDA Academic All-District
Team. Smith, an infielder named
to the District 6 First Team, has
maintained a 3.36 grade-point
average while studying accounting.
The senior from Austin, Texas
has also shined in the diamond
while switching between second
base, shortstop and third base,
effectively plugging any and all
holes that have emerged in the
Rattlers’ lineup as injuries have
piled up.
Smith has batted .318 this
season in 47 starts, driving in 35
runs and scoring 44 runs. He has
homered once to go along with
17 doubles and a team-high five
triples. The Rattlers are 28-19
on the season, in the Heartland
Conference Tournament.

aniversario de “Noche de Festival” ante un público que llenó
el teatro de Fine Arts Academy.

una velada musical al auditorio

Brigid redefines all-American menu

Brigid restaurant, located off S. Saint Mary’s St.,
opened its doors in 2015 to a
contemporary American fare
using locally sourced, quality
ingredients.
Applying classic techniques
to their menu, the restaurant enjoys evolving modern
American food into dishes
that are new to San Antonio.
For Chef Justin Richardson,
making a menu that involves
re-inventing American cuisine makes him more creative
behind the kitchen and less
anxious about his competi-
tors.
In other words, he believes
that big surprises are important for a customer to see on
the menu, rather than expect
something they have already
tasted.
Recently, La Prensa visited
Brigid while they hosted a
“New Orleans in the 1930s”
pre-fixe dinner event that
included an evening of food,
drinks and music, all inspired by the culture of the
city during the thrilling time
period. As the theme was
set for the night for all to be
entertained, the food was created to offer a different and
memorable experience.

comes to designing dishes,
we come up with seasonality,

the culture,” Chef Richardson
told La Prensa.
To start things off, canapés
were passed and ready to
be eaten including Oysters
Bienville. As you slip them
into your mouth, you taste a
little more spice, allowing it
to survive on its own, without tartar sauce and crackers.
As the band started playing jazz music, the Duck Egg
Sardou with Capicola and
Frisee Salad was brought
out leaving many to wonder
how to eat the salad. All was
spread out, however, once
you splatter the egg yolk all
around the plate, it allows for
all the ingredients to come
together, tasting similar to a
nicoise salad without needing
vinaigrette dressing.
The Golden Trout Amandine was the best dish on
the menu. Paired with green
beans, rice, almonds and
sprouts, one will never find
a crispy, perfectly cooked
trout balanced with healthy
elements of vegetables and
carbs as this one created by
Brigid.
The main dish, a tasty
gateway to Louisiana, was
the Blood Sausage with Red
Beans and Rice. Let me warn
you that this is not Texas
barbecue, but a dish you will
need to be brave to try.
The dish had pork belly,
easily peeled off to eat, and
sausage that tasted rawer
than what Texans are normally accustomed to. I enjoyed tasting a different kind
of rice and beans that added
more spice to the beans and
less spice to the light flavored
rice because it balanced the
whole dish of uncertainty.
All the dishes brought out
a vision that all-American
dishes no longer consist of
ordinary burgers and fries.
Brigid successfully allowed
many to expect the unexpected as they tasted a new
and improved definition of
American food. All we can
expect is that the restaurant
will only have further success
to allow San Antonio’s culinary scene to grow creatively.
“We want to express things
that have not been done in
San Antonio to push the envelope, and we want customers to be relaxed and open to
try something new. We want
people to be pleasant and
calm once they step inside
the restaurant. We want to
bring the product to the table
and make sure that we stay
memorable,” concluded Chef
Richardson.

McNay displays whirlwind ‘Coney Island’

The McNay Art Museum presents “Coney Island: Visions of
an American Dreamland, 18612008,” an exhibit that will bring
the spirit of Coney Island all the
way down to South Texas.
The exhibition, which opened
this week, celebrates of one of the
most popular American amusement parks in the United States
through artists, musicians, poets
and even filmmakers. For Robin
Jaffee Frank, the exhibit’s organizing curator, it was looking
through Joseph Stella’s painting
“Battle of Lights, Coney Island,
Mardi Gras” that captured her
heart to explore more about park
and make it into an exhibition
many will enjoy.
“The modernity of Coney
Island at the turn of the century carried an exuberance and
astonishing style that I used as
initial motivation. After doing
research, I discovered that many
of those artists perceived Coney
Island as a prism in which to
view the American experience,”
Frank told La Prensa. “The works
of art varied widely in style and
mood, but they all seem to
convey together the sense that
Coney Island is not just a strip
in the borough of Brooklyn, but
a singular place for the American
imagination.”
“Coney Island” starts at the
beginning of the park in 1861,
where the wealthy opened the
gates of the park, and let it go
through a transformation of an
entertaining destination for many
to work or have fun. It then leads
to the amusement park closing
of the Astroland Amusement
Park following to a population
decline.
From early depictions of “the
people’s beach” by Impressionists William Merritt Chase and
the John Henry Twachtman to
modern and contemporary images by photographers Diane
Arbus and Walker Evans, Red
Grooms, Yasuo Kuniyoshi,
Reginald Marsh, Jospeh Stella,
Swoon and George Tooker,
Coney Island explores into the
up, down and rising amusement
park capital of the world.
More than 140 objects are on
display including photographs,
prints, films and carousel animals
that many McNay visitors can see
through the Big Apple lens.
With many objects, paintings
and a film in the exhibit, Frank
explains that the editing side of
the exhibit was difficult – yet it
gave her the right direction to
go forward. It made decision
making easier to sweep out the
themes of using historical animals, architectural artifacts and
iconic American paintings.
“I was looking to tell a story
that simply is Coney Island. It
is a place to imagine the future
in which we would later call the
past, conveying changing ideas
about leisure and the mixing of
people of different backgrounds,
including races, classes, national
origins, as well as transitioning
social boundaries… Coney Island is a place of magic and mystery and extraordinary resilience
just as our nation is,” concluded
Frank.
The exhibit will be on display
until Sept. 11 at The McNay Art
Museum located at 6000 N New

A few weeks ago, I had the
opportunity to try out San Antonio’s newest hot spot, iFLY.
I, along with a few of my La
Prensa coworkers, suited up,
took a flight lesson and experienced the thrill of indoor
skydiving.
We learned that “iFLY is a

Worlds Revealed), la exhibición con la que el Witte
Museum estrena su nuevo
Mays Family Center este
sábado 14 de mayo promete
un mundo de actividades para
conocer diferentes aspectos de
esta cultura indígena aún viva.
Los visitantes podrán desde
elegir un nombre y escribirlo
en glifos, experimentar la arquitectura maya construyendo
un arco, formar patrones para
textiles, sentir el peso de una
pelota de caucho como las
utilizadas por los mayas en su
antiguo juego de pelota, entre
muchas otras.
Pero además a través de más
de doscientas piezas originales
provenientes de Belice y otros
museos, así como reproducciones de estelas, pirámides
y muchos mapas y videos, el
público apreciará la majestuosidad de esta cultura que floreció desde el sur de México a
través de los actuales países de
Belice, Guatemala, El Salvador hasta el sur de Nicaragua.

un guía muy particular para
explicar la música y la vida de
la realeza maya.
Asimismo, en la tienda de recuerdos de esta exhibición todas
las artesanías han sido hechas
por mayas contemporáneos y
traídas desde Guatemala.
A pesar que la cultura maya
en su esplendor colapsó, esto
no significa que haya desaparecido. “(Por eso) siempre
hemos dicho que no vamos
a estar interpretando como
si fuera una cultura muerta”,
agrega Sarita Rodríguez.
Y aunque el corazón del
mundo maya más cercano del
Sur de Texas está en la Península de Yucatán (México), Rodríguez afirma que en Estados
Unidos existen comunidades
mayas reconocidas en otras
ciudades como Houston y en
otros estados como Florida.

Daddy Yankee, Don Omar take
part in reggaeton duel in Las Vegas
EFE - Daddy Yankee and
Don Omar, two of reggaeton’s biggest stars, took part
in a musical face-off in Las
Vegas, a clash that produced
no clear winner but did offer
a healthy sampling of that
genre’s primal energy.
Friday night’s show at
MGM Grand Garden Arena
in Las Vegas was the first U.S.
stop on the recording artists’
“The Kingdom” tour, in which
the two Puerto Rican stars
battle it out for the title of
reggaeton king.
The clash, however, was a
bit disappointing for the fans
because after a pair of electrifying solo performances the
two did not appear on stage
together in a head-to-head
contest.
Daddy Yankee got the
crowd moving with “Boricua
Morena” and “Ella Me Levanto” and wrapped up his
performance with a racy and
sweaty rendition of “Gasolina,” one of reggaeton’s first
big international hits.

and “Pobre diabla,” among
other hits.
Daddy Yankee and Don
Omar have few differences,
but on Friday night the former showcased a more aggressive, hip-hop style while
the latter leaned on more
sensual Latin and Caribbean
rhythms.
The tour began in December in Puerto Rico and will
also include stops in Washington, New York, Miami and
Orlando, among other U.S.
cities, organizers told EFE.
