FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 10, 2016 Excuses, Excuses If you get pulled over for speeding, you might have several excuses to use, but did you ever say that you didn't know you had to obey the speed limit? As the saying goes, ignorance of the law is no excuse. That is what Moses is telling the people in the first reading. The laws of God are not difficult to understand. Anyone with a conscience should be able to live with them. By the time of Jesus, the scribes and Pharisees had added many more laws. The scholar who questioned Jesus about eternal life knew what was important: loving God with all your being and loving your neighbor as yourself. If He had stopped there, He would have been all right. But by asking "Who is my neighbor?" He implied that there are limits to love. That's why Jesus used the parable of the good Samaritan to show that love is as simple as helping someone in need. Even today, we find people making excuses for not doing what God asks of us. We want someone else to interpret it for us, hoping they will find a loophole we can use to ignore God's commands. We judge people who need help, saying they choose to be poor or homeless. We say that between work and family obligations, we have no time to give to the community. We sign our kids up for so many sports that we don't even go to church on Sundays. We always have time to watch our favorite TV shows, but there's never enough time for daily prayers. Before you start beating yourself up with guilt, remember that God expects us to take care of our families, to spend time with our children, and even to take time to rest and relax. If we are willing to look at our lives and bring them to God, asking for guidance, we are making the first steps to keep God's law of love. Even Jesus, whom Paul describes in the second reading as the image of God and source of all creation, had to die on the cross to show God's love to the world. Jesus understands the difficult choices we make. Ask for His help and you shall receive. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. July 10, 2016 Saint Eugene Catholic Church Rev. For Baptism, at least two months and for Marriage, at least six months notice is required. Thank you! Please call Parish Office. MASS INTENTIONS If you would like to dedicate a Mass for someone, it may be scheduled either by stopping by the parish office or calling. Since a Mass Stipend is truly an offering, the amount is entirely up to the individual scheduling the intention. The only insight we can offer is that the average stipend is approximately $10.00 per scheduled Mass. The offering is truly up to you. Consideration: A Mass stipend is not required, rather it is a customary offering to the Priest. The spiritual value is in the Mass itself. The inability to offer a stipend should never deter someone from scheduling a Mass. TECHNOLOGY MINISTRY SEEKING MEMBERS We in the Technology Ministry are seeking new members. Our primary function is to help set up microphones and make volume adjustments during the services as needed. Most of our members have had no experience before joining our Ministry, yet quickly become some of our most valued members. Summer is an ideal time to get introduced to what we do as the choir is on hiatus and the music is simplified. Initially you will shadow our regular techs and when ready take a Mass or two. (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) have begun. Sessions will take place on Sundays, in the parish parlor, from 9:40 to 10:40am. The journey of faith begins with questions - your questions. What do Catholics believe? How does Catholicism fit in with other faith traditions? The process begins with an “inquiry” period when questions lead to exploration. Please join us for a fun-filled, faith-filled, Spirit-filled gathering. If you would like to begin this journey of faith, please call our parish office and provide your contact information. (Name, phone number, email address, etc.). A member of the RCIA team will contact you with further information. We will look forward to meeting you and answering your questions. Deacon Mike Zboyovski/828-2545193, ext. 20.
