THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST May 29, 2016 Give Them Some Food Yourselves The Gospel for this feast reminds me of what my aunt used to tell us when we would visit her and share a meal. She always fixed more than enough for everyone (even with her three kids and my parents' eight kids); her favorite saying was, "If you don't get enough to eat, it's your own fault." Perhaps Jesus would say the same as He feeds us with His Body and Blood. Some say that the multiplication of loaves was not done by breaking the laws of physics. Instead, they say that Jesus, when He began to share the little bread that He had, touched the hearts of all those who had brought food with them. They followed His example by sharing their food also--so much that there were twelve baskets left over. While I don't doubt that Jesus could have multiplied the loaves He had, it reminds me of the temptation in the desert, when the devil told Him to make bread out of rocks. If he rejected that temptation, why would He do almost the same thing now? No, Jesus came to change people's hearts, to show them God's love and how to love one another. The miracle of the loaves shows us that Jesus can feed millions with His Body and Blood in the Eucharist. The miracle of changing bread and wine into His Body and Blood is not just so we can feel good about having Jesus so near to us. It is meant to strengthen us to do our best as His disciples. As food and drink help us to keep on working, His Body and Blood help us to keep on loving. Look around as the Communion procession goes by and think about how many are united with Jesus. Let the broken bread and poured-out wine remind you of how Jesus gave Himself up to death on the cross. When the disciples told Jesus about the hungry crowd, He told them, "Give them some food yourselves" (Luke 9:13). And one day they would. When they celebrated the Eucharist after Jesus' resurrection, they gave that spiritual food to the new followers of Christ. We continue that today. With Jesus' strength we can teach all people about the Father's love for them and how they can love each other. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. For Baptism, at least two months and for Marriage, at least six months notice is required. Thank you! Please call Parish Office. MASS INTENTIONS If you would like to dedicate a Mass for someone, it may be scheduled either by stopping by the parish office or calling. Since a Mass Stipend is truly an offering, the amount is entirely up to the individual scheduling the intention. The only insight we can offer is that the average stipend is approximately $10.00 per scheduled Mass. The offering is truly up to you. Consideration: A Mass stipend is not required, rather it is a customary offering to the Priest. The spiritual value is in the Mass itself. The inability to offer a stipend should never deter someone from scheduling a Mass. Fr. Doug May M.M. will lead a discussion following the film. Thursday, June 10th from1:00 to 3:00 pm at St. Eugene. THE JOY OF SOX May 29 is the last day our parish will be collecting NEW men’s, women’s and children’s socks. The homeless very rarely receive the gift of new socks so your donation can help reduce foot and general health problems and bring joy to recipients. Socks will be distributed to local organizations that serve the poor and homeless. This is a great project for families. (Black cotton crew socks with reinforced toe/heel are ideal for men) There will be a collection box in the gathering space. Karen Bradley 828-645-2332. (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) have begun. Sessions will take place on Sundays, in the parish parlor, from 9:40 to 10:40am. The journey of faith begins with questions - your questions. What do Catholics believe? How does Catholicism fit in with other faith traditions? The process begins with an “inquiry” period when questions lead to exploration. Please join us for a fun-filled, faith-filled, Spirit-filled gathering. If you would like to begin this journey of faith, please call our parish office and provide your contact information. (Name, phone number, email address, etc.). A member of the RCIA team will contact you with further information. We will look forward to meeting you and answering your questions. Deacon Mike Zboyovski/828-2545193, ext. 20.
