STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - THE ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In the gospel for today, we hear of the woman who showed great love for Jesus because her many
sins had been forgiven. The self-righteous Pharisees were indignant at her actions and the fact that Jesus
tolerated them. Jesus challenged them and pointed out that those with the greatest debt forgiven have the
greatest love for the one who forgives the debt.
There are two twists to this story. The first, and most obvious because it exactly follows the gospel,
is that if we acknowledge our many shortcomings and sins and our faith in Jesus as our savior gains our forgiveness, then we should love God immensely for his goodness and mercy. Someone who is self-righteous
and fails to acknowledge their sins would see themselves as having no need for God or his mercy. Therefore,
their love for him would be diminished. Given that Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to “Love the
Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind,” the self-righteous then fail
to fulfill the greatest commandment. Therefore, we should admit our sinfulness, accept God’s mercy, and
love him in return.
I view a second twist in the gospel story as recognizing God’s blessings to us leading to love. If we
recognize that all that we are and all that we have is a gift from God, we would thank him and love him in
return. However, if we feel that we are self-made, much the same as if we are without sin we don’t need
God’s mercy, then we would feel that we owe him nothing in return. Let us examine our blessings and give
credit and thanks to the source of all that is good.
We are stewards of God’s blessings to us. If that blessing is forgiveness, we are called to forgive
those who trespass against us as God forgives our trespasses. If it is personal or material blessings, we are
called to return them to God according to his will. This means developing our talents to the fullest of their
potential and returning them in thanks to God.
If we were in the gospel story for today, would we be the thankful penitent sinner or the indignant
self-righteous Pharisees?

As we hear the Gospel today, we realize
that sometimes we are like Simon, as it’s
far easier to see what is wrong in another than it is to see what is wrong in ourselves. But Jesus, who accepts the poor
woman without judging or blaming her, shows us
what Christian love is all about. Please remember
the poor in our community in your daily devotions.
