On Lenten Observance. Here is a text from Fr. Reginaldo Mananzan, SJ explaining some important facts about our Lenten observance of fasting and abstinence.
I am borrowing this from him so we can have some guide to follow.
According to Fr. Mananzan, Canon Law requires the universal Church to observe
penance. Penance is an act of mortification allowing oneself to share in the sufferings
that our Lord Jesus Christ went through for the forgiveness of sins and our salvation.
The canonical forms of penance during Lent are fasting and abstinence.
Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The law on fasting
requires that only one full meal is taken. Two smaller meals may be taken. Snacks are
not permitted however liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed.
If you are 18 years old and above and below 60 years old, you are required to fast.
But if you belong to the age bracket who are required to fast, you may also be exempt from fasting. The exemption applies to those who are very sick, those whose jobs require their attentiveness like policemen, doctors, nurses and those who work more than nine hours. If you are exempted from the observance of fast, you
are, however, asked to offer your pains or your work as a sharing to the Lord’s sufferings.
We will discuss abstinence in the next issue of our bulletin.

The Transfiguration. The Lucan Transfiguration narrative is simple as plain and direct to the point story. The major elements of the story are present. Jesus was with his three disciples Peter, James and John. They
went up to the mountain to pray as a way to end Jesus’ ministry. Then on the mountain Jesus was Transfigured. The disciples saw it. Then they also saw Moses and Elijah were with him. They talked about the exodus
that Jesus is going to accomplish in Jerusalem. A voice from heaven was heard saying, “This is my chosen
son; listen to him.”
Peter, James and John were privileged to see the glory of Jesus in the Transfiguration event. Note that
when Peter saw it, he was drawn to stay there. He suggested that they pitch tents. Sukkot. Pitching tents is a
religious ceremonial. Perhaps in Peter’s mind was to give places of reverence to these prophets and stay close
to their glory.
I think it is heart’s desire for Peter to continue seeing the glory of God through these holy men. And by
suggesting tent-pitching, he did not understand the exodus that Jesus has to fulfill in Jerusalem.
Peter was comfortable to see the glory that is revealed in that event. Naturally he would not want for
nothing except that. So why the need to go down to Jerusalem?

The work of improving our sacred space is going to start this time. The need for the improvement is
basically addressing the need for our worship to become Theologically and Liturgically sound. As Catholics,
we have to consider not just aesthetics and functionality but also the meaning of symbolisms we use in our
worship. The improvements that will be done in the sanctuary space are directed towards making our worship
essentially and truly Catholic so that when we kneel before the altar, we may be able to know very well for
whom we kneel.

Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Chair of St. Peter, Apostle, Feb 22
"The Eucharist is at the very center of our life, such was
the teaching of Jesus. When commenting on the Miracle
of the Multiplication of the Loaves, He told His apostles
that He Himself is the Living Bread that came down from
heaven. He called on the twelve for an act of faith and it
was Peter who answered in the name of all: 'Lord, to
whom shall we go? You have the words of everlasting
life. We have come to believe and know that you are the
Holy One of God' (John 6:69). Christian faith is faith in
the Eucharistic Christ." (Jean Galot, S.J.)
Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament. Adoration is available in the chapel 24 hours
every day. For adoration outside of the 24-hour regular
Thursday schedule, call the office for instructions and to
enlist. Everyone is welcome. Spend as much or as little
time as you can. Thank you for offering our Lord this
special hour. Expect God's blessing, and give Him thanks.
Pray One! Knit One!
The next meeting for Prayer Shawl Ministry will be on

open to anyone that would like to join in the beautiful
journey of prayer and comfort through the making and
giving of a shawl. We have supplies and help for getting
started plus volunteers to help with learning to knit or
crochet. Finished shawls are available and located for
your convenience in an unlocked cabinet in the Gathering
Space. If you have would like further assistance in

Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests, especially (name here). Keep them all close to Your heart and
bless them abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen.”

those who can answer their questions, other miscellaneous
tasks. Bilingual would be a plus!

than us and our Good Friday loose collection will go to help support Christians in the Holy Land. Please give generously
to both.

MEN'S SATURDAY BIBLE GROUP
For the weeks of Lent at least, please consider joining the St.
Mary' Men's bible group that meets once a week each
Saturday at 9.30 AM in the St. Maximilian Kolbe room; the entrance faces the children's Play Land beside the church parking
lot. The group reads and reflects on the gospel of the Sunday
mass. We use a lectio divina approach, rather than studying the
gospel academically. Lectio divina, or "sacred reading" is an ancient Church practice of praying by reading the scriptures. This
method has been revived in the Church today and has become
very popular.
Here's what we do: The gospel text is read slowly and deliberately two or three times with short periods between each reading for prayerful silence and reflection, with pointers on how to
better listen to what the Lord says to each in the silence of the
heart. For more information about the group, contact either of
the following group members:
