“Who Matters!”
Dear Friends,
Many years ago, I heard a quote that has stayed
with me. I’m not even sure who first said it.
“It has been said that God whispers to us in the
everyday occurrences of our lives; God speaks
to us in coincidence; and God shouts to us
in tragedy.” Over the past several months, in
Orlando, Dallas, Nice, Baton Rouge, Munich,
Normandy, and, yes, even in our own city of
Chicago, God is shouting! The psalmist writes, and we sing over
and over today, “If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your
hearts.” So let’s soften our hearts and hear God’s shouts. What is
God trying to communicate to us?
As last weeks Scriptures encouraged us to persevere in prayer,
today’s readings invite us to evaluate our priorities. Too often we
get caught up in the vanity of the superficial. So we are charged to
go deeper and to acknowledge what is truly important, what really
matters. We’ve watched the protests and heard of streets being
closed down because the protesters believe that the lives of their
cause “matter.” I strongly hold that each and every life matters!
While I believe with my whole heart that black lives matter,
and, sadly, so often they’ve been unjustly treated like they don’t,
we must expand the axiom. Black, white and blue lives matter.
Christian and non-Christian lives matter. Familiar and unfamiliar
lives matter. Refugees’ lives matter. Poor and rich lives matter.
Elderly lives matter. Unborn lives matter. When the inhabitants of
this city and world admit this and commit to living the axiom each
and every life matters, we will know peace. Until then, God will
continue shouting.
When we commit to each and every life matters, we will move
beyond ourselves. We will rid ourselves of selfishness and greed.
We will live more generously and will share what we have with
those who are most in need. We will tear down the walls that have
been built around us and will allow mercy and inclusivity to prevail.
When we spend our time amassing our own treasure without
regard for the needs of those around us we say “MY life matters.
My future matters. My comfort and plans for the future matter.
My causes matter.” When we share what we have, letting go of our
attachments to stuff, we change the “my” to “all.” In God’s merciful
loving plan, “all” works better.
Why do we spend our lives storing up passing treasure while
forgetting what matters to God? Why did the fellow in the Gospel
desire to build more and bigger grain barns? Perhaps it’s because he
and we lack faith that God will always provide. Maybe we associate
our “stuff ” with our worth. Perchance we have allowed society’s
“pleasure principle” to be our rule. Whatever the reason we do it,
God is shouting at us to change, to move beyond ourselves, to give
of ourselves, to respond generously to those in need, to welcome
all and to proclaim by the way we live our lives that each and every
life matters!
When we recognize, as Saint Paul did, that Christ is all and is in
all, we can live more openly, generously, and can show respect
for everyone. When I pray the Eucharistic Prayer for Masses of
Reconciliation these words stay with me: “For though the human
race is divided by dissention and discord, yet we know that by
testing us you change our hearts to prepare them for reconciliation.
Even more, by your Spirit you move human hearts that enemies
may speak to each other again, adversaries may join hands and
peoples seek to meet together. By the working of your power it
comes about, O Lord, that hatred is overcome by love, revenge
gives way to forgiveness, and discord is changed to mutual respect.”
Each and every life matters!
This afternoon I leave with nearly forty pilgrims, including four
of our young parishioners (and a few young at heart ones), for our
annual service pilgrimage to Lourdes, France. As usual, we will
pray for your intentions. If you have specific intentions for which
you’d like us to pray, feel free to email the intentions to me directly
at [email protected]. Please pray for us. With the
disheartening news of the priest killed while celebrating Mass on
Tuesday in Normandy, many parents and travelers are anxious. I
believe that the Holy Spirit will guide and protect us. Your prayers
will sustain us.

SUMMER MISSION APPEAL NEXT WEEKEND
There will be a second collection for the Summer Mission Appeal
at all Masses the weekend of Aug. 6 & 7. The collection is for the
benefit of our Sisters and Brothers who work in the mission fields
of our Church. There will also be a special speaker at Masses the
weekend of Aug. 6 & 7 bringing us news of missionaries and their
work.
CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD
Our Children’s Liturgy of the Word program is currently on
summer vacation. It will resume on Sunday, Sept. 11, and take
place on the second Sunday of the month throughout the school
year. This child-centered celebration of the Word takes place at
the 9:45 a.m. Mass once a month. After the Introductory Rites of
Mass, children age 3 to 2nd grade are invited forward to receive
a blessing from the priest. The children and their adult catechists
adjourn to the church basement where they listen to the day’s
Gospel and participate in related art and music activities. Children
return to the Mass after the prayer petitions. Adults interested in
helping should contact Shelagh Donoghue in the parish office.

Gospel, a sinful woman recognizes
this lavish generosity, and it inspires
her to a similar generosity toward
Jesus. A woman . . . brought an
alabaster jar of ointment. She stood
behind him at his feet, weeping,
and began to bathe his feet with her
tears. (Luke 7:37–38)
WOMEN’S FAITH CIRCLE
The Women’s Faith Circle will meet on Tuesday, August 9, in the
school chapel beginning at 7 p.m. You are invited to share some
quiet, prayerful time in a faith group as you take a break from the
daily routine and focus your attention on spiritual growth. The
circle is always open. Come, and bring a friend.
THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A CATHOLIC?
Consider joining our RCIA program. The Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is for anyone 18 and older who would
like to learn more about the Catholic faith and for those who seek
to be baptized, receive First Holy Communion and be confirmed
in the Catholic Church. The RCIA can also help you complete the
necessary steps to become a member of the Catholic Church if you
were baptized in another Christian denomination. RCIA meets
on Thursday evenings, three times per month from September
to April. If you are interested in learning more, if you know of
anyone who might be a candidate for this journey, or if you are
willing to help as a catechist or sponsor, please contact Shelagh
Donoghue in the parish office.

“¿Quién Importa?”
Queridos Amigos,
¿Por qué pasamos la vida almacenando tesoros pasajeros, olvidando lo
que le importa a Dios? ¿Por qué el hombre en el Evangelio deseo construir
graneros más y más grandes? Tal vez es porque él y nosotros carecemos
de la fe de que Dios siempre proveerá. Tal vez asociamos nuestras “cosas”
con nuestro valor. Tal vez hemos permitido que el “principio del placer”
de la sociedad sea nuestra regla. Cualquiera que sea la razón por que lo
hacemos, Dios nos está gritando que cambiemos, que vayamos más allá de
nosotros mismos, a dar de nosotros mismos, a responder generosamente a
los necesitados, a dar la bienvenida a todos y proclamar por la forma en que
vivimos que todas las vidas importan
Hace muchos años, escuché un dicho que se quedó
grabado en mi memoria. Aún no se quien lo dijo
primero. “Se dice que Dios nos susurra durante
sucesos cotidianos de nuestras vidas, nos habla en
las coincidencias, y nos grita en las tragedias.” En
los últimos meses, en Orlando, Dallas, Niza, Baton
Rouge, Múnich, Normandía, y sí, incluso en nuestra
propia ciudad de Chicago, ¡Dios está gritando! Hoy el
salmista escribe y cantamos una y otra vez, “Si hoy escuchas la voz de Dios,
no endurezcas el corazón.” Así que ablandemos el corazón y escuchemos los
gritos de Dios. ¿Qué es lo que Dios está tratando de comunicarnos?
Cuando reconocemos, como lo hizo San Pablo, que Cristo es todo
y está en todo, podemos vivir abierta y generosamente, demostrando
respeto por los demás. Cuando rezo la oración eucarística para las Misas
de la Reconciliación estas palabras se quedan conmigo: “Aunque la raza
humana se divide por la disensión y la discordia, también sabemos que las
pruebas que nos mandas cambian nuestros corazones preparándolos para la
reconciliación. Aún más, por tu Espíritu se mueven los corazones humanos
y hace que los enemigos puedan hablar el uno con el otro nuevamente,
adversarios puedan unir sus manos y los pueblos traten de reunirse. La obra
de tu poder hace, oh Señor, que el odio sea vencido por el amor, la venganza
dé paso al perdón y la discordia se transforme en respeto mutuo.” ¡Todas y
cada una de las vidas importan!
Como la última semana las Escrituras nos animaron a perseverar en
la oración, las lecturas de hoy nos invitan a considerar nuestras prioridades.
Con demasiada frecuencia nos vemos atrapados en la vanidad de lo
superficial. Así que estamos encargados de profundizar y reconocer lo que
es verdaderamente importante, lo que realmente vale. Hemos visto y
escuchado que las calles están cerradas debido a las protestas porque los
manifestantes creen que la vida de su causa “importa”. Firmemente sostengo
que ¡cada vida es importante!
Aunque creo de todo corazón que la vida de los negros importa, y
lamentablemente muy menudo han sido tratados injustamente, debemos
ampliar ese refrán. Las vidas negras, blancas y azules importan. Las vidas
cristianas y no cristianas importan. Las vidas familiares y no familiares
importan. Las vidas de los refugiados importan. Las vidas de los pobres y
ricos importan. Las vidas de los ancianos importan. Las vidas de los no
nacidos importan. Cuando los habitantes de esta ciudad y el mundo admitan
y se comprometan a vivir el refrán de que todas y cada una de las vidas
importan, conoceremos la paz. Hasta entonces, Dios continuará gritando.
Esta tarde viajo con casi cuarenta peregrinos, entre ellos cuatro de
nuestros jóvenes feligreses (y otras personas jóvenes de corazón), a nuestra
peregrinación anual de servicio a Lourdes, Francia. Como de costumbre,
oraremos por sus intenciones. Si tiene intenciones específicas por las cuales
le gustaría que oremos, no dude en enviarme por correo electrónico las
intenciones directamente a [email protected]. Por favor, ore
por nosotros. Con la desalentadora noticia de un compañero sacerdote
asesinado mientras celebraba la Misa el martes en Normandía, muchos
padres y los viajeros están inquietos. Creo que el Espíritu Santo nos guía y
nos protege. Sus oraciones nos socorrerán.
Cuando nos comprometamos a la creencia de que todas y cada una de
las vidas importan, iremos más allá de nosotros mismos. Nos desharemos
del egoísmo y la codicia. Viviremos con más generosidad y compartiremos
lo que tenemos con aquellos que más lo necesitan. Derribaremos los
muros que se han construido a nuestro alrededor y permitiremos que la
misericordia e inclusión prevalezca.
Paz,
Cuando pasamos el tiempo acumulando nuestro propio tesoro sin
tener en cuenta las necesidades de los que nos rodean decimos “MI vida
importa. Mi futuro importa. Mi confort y planes para el futuro importan.
Mis causas importan”. Cuando compartimos lo que tenemos, cuando nos
olvidamos de nuestras cosas materiales, cambiamos el “mi” a “todos”. En el
misericordioso plan de amor de Dios, “todo” funciona mejor.

su nuevo papel como Presidenta del Departamento de Teología de la
Escuela Secundaria Madre McAuley. Le damos las gracias por sus años
de servicio!

LA SIGUIENTE SEMANA ES LA COLABORACIÓN
MISIONERA DEL VERANO
Habrá una segunda colecta para la Colaboración Misionera del
Verano en todas las Misas del fin de semana del 6 y 7 de agosto.
La colecta es para el beneficio de nuestros hermanos y hermanas
que trabajan como misioneros de nuestra Iglesia. También habrá
un orador especial en las Misas de ese fin de semana y nos dará
información de los misioneros y de su trabajo.
LITURGIA DE LA PALABRA DE NIÑOS
Nuestro programa de Liturgia de la Palabra de Niños está de
vacaciones de verano. Comenzará el domingo, 11 de septiembre
y ocurrirá el segundo domingo de cada mes durante todo el año
escolar. Esta celebración de la Palabra centrada en los niños ocurre
en la Misa de 9:45 a.m. una vez al mes. Después de los ritos
iniciales de la misa, los niños de 3 años a 2º grado están invitados
a recibir la bendición del sacerdote. Los niños y sus catequistas
adultos bajan al sótano de la iglesia, donde escuchan el Evangelio
del día y participan en actividades relacionadas con el arte y la
música. Los niños regresan a la Misa después de las peticiones. Las
personas adultas que estén interesadas en ayudar deben ponerse en
contacto Shelagh Donoghue en la oficina parroquial.

El Círculo de Mujeres de Fe se reunirá el martes 9 de agosto, en
la capilla de la escuela comenzando a las 7 pm. Usted está invitada
a compartir un momento de tranquilidad, tiempo para orar con
un grupo de fe, mientras que usted toma un descanso de la rutina
diaria y enfoca su atención en el crecimiento espiritual. El círculo
está siempre abierto. Venga, y traiga una amiga.

Teachers and Subs Needed for Religious Education Program
July 24, 2016
The Religious Education program needs additional adults to
join our team of dedicated and faith-filled volunteer catechists.
Religious Education meets from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on most Saturdays from September through April. Please consider being a
substitute catechist if a weekly commitment is too much at this
time. We provide curriculum materials and training. Classes for
the 2016-2017 school year begin Saturday, Sept. 10.
Students who attended the PreCommunion or PreConfirmation classes during the 2015-2016 school year must register
again for the coming year so they will be able to make First
Holy Communion or Confirmation in 2017.
Registration forms are available on the parish website www.
stjohnberchmans.org or in the Rectory Office.

El programa de Educación Religiosa necesita adultos adicionales para unirse a nuestro equipo de catequistas voluntarios dedicados y llenos de fe. El
programa de Educación Religiosa se reúne de 9 a 10:30 am en la mayoría
de los sábados desde septiembre hasta abril. Si un compromiso semanal es
demasiado en este momento, por favor considere ser catequista substituto.
