Breaking Barriers
who was “looking for love in all the wrong places” found it in Jesus,
accepted his love and became a disciple and evangelist. That’s what
happens when we allow our broken selves to encounter the Lord.
Dear Friends,
“How can you, a Jew, ask me a Samaritan
woman for a drink?” Whenever I read the Gospel
of the Woman at the Well, which begins with
the woman’s response to Jesus’ simple – or not
so simple - request for a drink, I delight in the
entire dialogue and in the ultimate response of the
woman to her encounter with Jesus. Much goes
unsaid in the conversation, and looking a little closer allows us to see
what’s really happening in the woman’s life and how Jesus interacts
with her and heals her inner loneliness.
Lent gives us the opportunity to encounter the Lord in many
ways. One of the people I follow on Twitter is Father James Martin.
A Jesuit author, he just released his newly published books, Jesus, A
Pilgrimage. In a stunt, I’m sure directed by his publicist, he has invited
his Twitter followers to take photographs of his book in the places
where they are. As he receives the photos of his book in interesting,
exotic, or faraway places, he retweets the photo. It is a bit selfpromotional, but I love his play on words: “Jesus is everywhere!” He
means his book, but the person is too. This Lent we should try daily
to find him, and maybe read Father Martin’s book.
Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at the well at about noon.
The heat of the day oppressed at that hour. Most women, scholars
say, would go to the well in the morning to do their washing and
fetching of water for the home. Mornings allowed for more moderate
temperatures. The gathering at the well became for those present a
social function, a time to converse and share with one another the
joys and burdens of life. After doing their chores and enjoying one
another’s company, the women would return to their homes before
the heat of the day would become too burdensome. Our woman
comes at noon, presumably alone. Because of her situation in life and
because of the way others may look at her or the way she may feel
about herself, perhaps shame prevents her from being part of the
morning group.
We encounter Jesus in the Sacraments. In no Sacrament does Jesus
break down barriers more than in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Our guilt and sin weigh us down, but God’s mercy, made manifest
in the person of Jesus and in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, lifts us
up. The Pope and our own Cardinal have encouraged all Catholics to
return to the Sacrament this year – no matter how long it has been
since our last confession. In Boston, Cardinal Sean has even begun a
campaign to get people to come back to the Sacrament. He’s calling it,
“The Light Is On For You.” In every parish, the Sacrament is available
every Wednesday of Lent for 90 minutes. It’s a great message. Come
home to the Sacrament and you will be welcomed as you encounter
Jesus.
This lonely woman Jesus invites, at first meeting, to be generous,
to exercise hospitality. “Woman, give me a drink.” She’s at the well
and obviously has something with which to draw the water, but her
guilt and shame prevent her from responding immediately to his
request. She doesn’t say no, but expresses disbelief that he – or
probably anyone else – would ever want to have anything to do with
her. Jesus begins to break down the barriers that guilt and shame
(and cultural expectations and racism, and…) built up. When Jesus’
says, “Give me a drink,” he begins a conversation that will change
the woman’s life once and for all. Her guilt and shame urge her to
resist his overture, but he persists, out of the great love he has for the
broken and the downtrodden. Ultimately, his love breaks the barriers
that her actions and her feelings built up and she becomes aware of
his love and of his mercy. Aware of his love and mercy, the woman
On Thursday, March 27th we celebrate together the mercy of
God in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We will gather at 7:00pm,
listen to Sacred Scripture, sing some songs, examine our consciences,
and have an opportunity for individual Sacramental Reconciliation.
Please join us in our encountering the mercy and love of the Lord. He
will break our barriers.
Peace,
Our Mission:
Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and
service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place.

TOILETRY DRIVE
When I was a student at St. Symphorosa grammar school, my class made
the Stations of the Cross every Friday in Lent. Following Jesus on his way
toward Calvary made a powerful impression on me. I was deeply moved
when Jesus fell under the weight of the cross— once, twice, three times.
That experience continued to speak to me, especially when I “fell down
on the job” as a parent. As much as we may try, no parent is perfect.
There are times when we will fail. But we can carry on, knowing that
Jesus has walked this way before us. Remember, Jesus received strength
from the Father and his Mother, Mary, as well as assistance from Simon
of Cyrene. Let that inspire you to seek sources of help in bearing your
own particular crosses as a parent. We are not alone. —Tom McGrath

the articles collected in our toiletry drive for distribution. All are
welcome and encouraged to join us!

ADULT FORMATION SESSIONS
By Noreen May Russo
Peace & Justice, Paz y Justicia Commission Member
Led by Deacon Willie Mendizabal and his wife Maria, this formation
class will help you review some interesting topics about the Catholic
Faith. Especially during this Lenten season, it would be a great way
to increase your knowledge of the faith and come closer to Jesus.
Adult Faith Formation Classes will be offered on Saturday, March
29th, from 9am-10:30am and again on Monday, March 31st from
7:00pm-8:30pm. If you have any questions, please call or email
Amanda Sullivan in the rectory office. This class is required for all
parents whose children are preparing for Sacraments this year.
Catholic Social Teaching Principle: Sacredness and Dignity
of the Human Person
Created in the image of God, all people possess an inherent dignity
that comes directly from our creation and not from any action of our
own. Human life is sacred, and the welfare of all people is a priority.

BILINGUAL LENTEN RETREAT
We all have a story, we are worthy of love, and we all can help one another
to make this world a better place. One day I was feeling down with work
and I came across a woman selling a streetwise. I stopped but noticed the
streetwise looked like it had been pulled out of the trash. Instead of buying
the paper I asked the woman if she wanted lunch. She agreed and we had
lunch together. I learned she had a mother and a couple siblings. She grew
up in the neighborhood and went to high school. She recently had a stroke
and was living with her mother. I had to rush back to my job but as I was
leaving I could tell the staff didn’t want this woman to stay in the restaurant
without me. I turned to the woman and asked her “what is your name?” she
replied “Love”. It couldn’t be, I thought and then said to her out loud. She
pulled out her license and there it was, her name, Love. I turned to the staff
as I was leaving and said Love can stay as long as she wants and paid the bill.
Please join us on Saturday, April 5th at 9am for a bilingual Lenten
Retreat. More information can be found on the flyer included in
this weeks bulletin. To RSVP, please contact Guille McMahon in the
parish office or at [email protected].
Reconciliation
Our bilingual Reconciliation Service will be held on Thursday,
March 27th at 7pm. Lent is both a hopeful season and a
penitential one, making Lent the perfect time to examine our
consciences and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation in
preparation to celebrate the joy of the Easter season. Even if it has
been years since your last confession, now is the time to return to
this beautiful Sacrament.

Rompiendo Barreras
Jesús, A Pilgrimage.
Venga a casa
Ella no

Me conmovió
No estamos solos. —Tom McGrath

School News
Spotlight On...
Ms. Lindsey Faucher
Over the course of the next several months, we would like to introduce you
to our amazing faculty. The teachers presented below were asked to answer
two questions: (1) Please provide a brief description of your teaching style or
your goal as a teacher and (2) Please provide a brief description of your best
practice, most favorite lesson, most successful class — the moment when you
shined your brightest!
1.My goal as a teacher has always encompassed the idea
of helping every single child in my class, regardless of
who they are or where they are academically. In my
opinion, school should be a place where children feel
comfortable enough to learn, to grow, to share, to trust
others, and to be themselves. I always hope to create a
space where learning is fun and challenging, where new
knowledge is gained every single day, and where children are able to grow
together as a community in the classroom.
Ms. Melissa Determann
1. My goal as a teacher is to help each student
grow into life-long learners! When they are in
pre-school, they love coming to school and I want
to show them that school is a place they can learn
while having fun!
2. One of my favorite things to do with the children in my class is to create
engaging whole-group activities that not only encourage participation and
involvement, but also teach the idea of working together as a team. For
example, we will read a story that relates to the concept or theme we are
focusing on for the week, and go through each part of the story once we have
finished the book. We will then sequence the story and put the events that
occurred in order together as a whole group. Once the students have had a
chance to ask questions and practice sequencing with the help of their peers and
teachers, they are asked to break up into small groups and use story sequencing
cards to put the events of the book in order without teacher assistance. It
is so wonderful to have all of the children working together to correctly
sequence the story, and it is even better when I see the older children in class
assisting the younger children. Any activity that allows me to see students gain
understanding and strengthen bonds with their peers at the same time gives
me so much satisfaction- it is amazing to see what young minds are capable of!
2. There are so many moments that I have had while
teaching that it is hard to pick just one! I would say
that one of my favorite moments while teaching pre-school has been
seeing them come to school at the beginning of the year, not knowing
anything and then seeing them at the end of the year with their minds
full of everything they have learned. One story in particular is watching
them begin school with no idea how to write their name and then seeing
that moment when they finally do it for the first time on their own! They
are always so excited and you can see the pride they have in themselves!
Seeing them so excited makes teaching that much more enjoyable!

because I have long
wanted to learn and live
by the Catholic faith.
I am so grateful to Fr.

for walking this journey
with me as I have so much to learn about the
Catholic faith. I know through these people I will
learn to be closer to God and to my family!
I was born and raised here in Logan Square. I am a
single mom of three wonderful boys. I have been a
part of SJB since 2008. I was introduced to the school/
church by my sister. I then made the best decision
ever by enrolling my son Carlos in 2nd grade and
two years later my youngest son Jonathyn joined for
Kindergarten. SJB has been a great experience for
my boys and me. The Church, school & community
has had a huge impact on our lives these past few
years and I look forward to becoming a member of
the SJB church and becoming more involved.
