Today’s, “Feast of Mercy” reminds all of us that God’s mercy can overcome sin. Pope Francis has said that God never tires of forgiving us. The problem is that we tire of asking God for forgiveness. On this Divine Mercy Sunday, this Second Sunday of Easter, as we listen to gentle Jesus in his encounter with Thomas and the other disciples, we can reflect on our own lack of faith, on our own sinfulness – but really on the love and mercy of God in Jesus, which conquers all. As a Roman Catholic Church, we have much to celebrate today. On this Second Sunday of Easter, we still rejoice over the Resurrection of the Lord – his victory over sin and death. This whole week was a grand victory party. There really is reason to rejoice, sing, and praise the Lord, because his victory is our victory; his cross and resurrection is our joy! In 2000, when Pope John Paul II canonized Sister Faustina, he declared that the Second Sunday of Easter would be known as Divine Mercy Sunday. So, we celebrate Divine Mercy today too. During his homily, John Paul also made clear that the Image of The Divine Mercy St. Faustina saw, which is to be venerated on Divine Mercy Sunday, represents the Risen Christ bringing mercy to the world. Pope John Paul II said: “Jesus shows His hands and His side [to the Apostles]. He points, that is, to the wounds of the Passion, especially the wound in His Heart, the source from which flows the great wave of mercy poured out on humanity.” By the time our Sunday Masses are underway this weekend, our Church will have two new saints! Saint John XXIII and Saint John Paul II, to be canonized on the Second Sunday of Easter, give us great example of living with Christ. Cardinal George said, “The canonization of blessed Popes John XXIII and John Paul II will be a joyful moment. The history of the Church is the story of holiness. It is a centuries long saga of disciples growing ever closer to the Lord. Both Popes now join the great chorus of those recognized publicly as friends of the Lord, witnesses to the transforming power of God’s grace active in human lives. This canonization will encourage everyone to stay on the path of discipleship.” Pope Francis, discussing their canonization said, “John XXIII was courageous, a good country priest, with a great sense of humor, and great holiness. He was a man who let himself be guided by the Lord… Regarding John Paul II, I would say he was “the great missionary of the Church”: he was a missionary, a man who carried the Gospel everywhere… And to canonize them both together will be, I believe, a message for the Church: these two were wonderful, both of them.” Nearly eighty years ago Sister Faustina experienced visions of the Risen Lord. As he appeared to her, he encouraged her to invite others to trust in his mercy. One night she heard an “inner-voice” that offered her a way of praying for Divine Mercy, using the beads of her Rosary. It has become known as the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Many people find it helpful in their spiritual journey. I share the formula here. As we revel in our threefold festival, Let’s hear the call and respond with joy! 1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross, one (1) Our Father, one (1) Hail Mary and the Apostles’ Creed. Happy Easter! 2. Then on the Our Father Beads say the following: Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. 3. On the ten (10) Hail Mary Beads say the following: For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. P. S. Thank you to all you came on the eve of Palm Sunday to clean our spiritual home in preparation for Holy Week. Your dedication to Saint John Berchmans does not go unnoticed. May God reward you! (Repeat step 2 and 3 for all five decades). 4. Conclude with (three times): Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Our Mission: Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place. 2 April 27, 2014 Second Sunday of Easter THE YEAR OF STRONG CATHOLIC PARENTS (JULY 2013 - JUNE 2014) Parish Announcements RAISING FAITH-FILLED KIDS ONE WORD AT A TIME... ACCEPT CANONIZATION SUNDAY/ANOINTING MASS A lot of the suffering I have known has come from failing to practice acceptance. Acceptance is neither resignation nor throwing in the towel. It is not a passive stance. Instead, it is taking the irrefutable step of saying yes to what is, rather than wishing for something else. Once we say yes to life on life’s terms, we give ourselves the power to choose our response and allow God enough room to act in the situation. Let us pray: “God, I know that this situation is difficult and disheartening. But I will not lose hope. I will rise to this challenge, knowing that even my smallest efforts will be outmatched by your desire for my well-being. Help me accept what is, so that I will be open to discovering with you what will be.” —Tom McGrath Please join us tonight as we celebrate the Canonization of Blessed Pope John XXIII and Blessed Pope John Paul II with a special bilingual Anointing Mass at 6:30pm. During this Mass, the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will be available for all who are suffering in mind or body. All others are invited to come to pray with them and for them. JOIN US AS WE CELEBRATE THE SACRAMENTS Many of the students in both our school and Religious Education program are in the final stages of preparing to receive Sacraments in the first week of May. First Communions will be celebrated at the 5pm Mass on Saturday, May 3rd and the 9:45am, 11:15am & 6:30pm Masses on Sunday, May 4th. Confirmation will be celebrated at 6:30pm on Wednesday, May 7th. Please keep these students in your prayers during these final weeks and consider joining us at one or more of the Masses to share their Sacramental joy! GIVE TO FEED THOSE WHO HUNGER AND THIRST Host an “Earth Dinner”: Start by planning a dinner with as many local, seasonal, and organic ingredients as possible – supporting local and organic farmers is a great way to celebrate Earth Day. Then, get to know the story behind your food. Where did it come from? Who were the farmers? What is the history of each dish’s recipe, or the food itself? Finally, have some meaningful conversation about food, sustainable farming, and your own connection to the food, the earth, and each other. See http://earthdinner.org After Jessica lost her job, it was hard to put enough food on her family’s table. Sometimes her two children went to bed hungry, and she and her husband skipped meals. The Catholic Charities pantry on LaSalle St. provided emergency food until Jessica found work. More than a quarter million people rely on Catholic Charities food pantries in Cook and Lake counties. Last year, the need increased 20%. Please give on Mother’s Day to support Catholic Charities. Mrs. Susie Metoyer Over the course of the next several months, we would like to introduce you to our amazing faculty. The teachers presented below were asked to answer two questions: (1) Please provide a brief description of your teaching style or your goal as a teacher and (2) Please provide a brief description of your best practice, most favorite lesson, most successful class — the moment when you shined your brightest! 1. My teaching style changes with the needs of my students each school year. I act as a role model by demonstrating patience, kindness, and love each day. I show my students how to properly do a task or work through a problem then I’ll help them master the problem by using and adopting demonstrated methods. I try to find a good balance between my role and the needs of my students. Love and patience seems to make my role shine! Mrs. Julie Kurzynski 1. It is my goal to encourage the educational and personal growth of all students. Through personalized assistance and coaching, We strive to inspire self-confidence with our students so that their drive to learn is never dampened. 2. A few of my best practices are to develop my students thinking and problem-solving skills through integration and active learning activities. I plan activities to help my students build relationships through opportunities for communication and teamwork-for example; building with blocks, art, small group projects, writing, dramatic play, group science projects, and singing and dancing. These activities help motivate, engage, problem-solve and prompt my students to learn and achieve and have fun! I strive for a joyful feeling of purposeful movement, industrious thinking and a vital and vibrant atmosphere and environment....But, my best practice of all is to touch lives not just teach! 2. We strive to create an environment that helps to prepare all students for success and influence them to reach their highest goals. It is through lessons of faith, respect for one’s self and others, and love that we are able to build the foundations of a successful life for our students. It is important that they feel safe and emboldened, so that they may grow into the outstanding adults that they one day will be.
