Wayne’s World
Be Not Afraid
Dear Friends,
little convincing, but he agreed to give it a try. He has supported Saint John
Berchmans and many other philanthropic causes quite generously over the
years, and, to his surprise, the pile has not shrunk. God has provided, as God
always does.
Don’t be afraid! Those words of assurance from
the prophet Elijah to the worrying widow of Zarephath
serve well for all of us. Fear makes us cling to our
possessions and limits our generosity. She conquered
her fear, shared what she had - and wanted for nothing.
The two widows in today’s readings inspire me to be more generous. In
my personal experience, the same holds true. When we conquer our fear and
release ourselves of undue attachments, God takes care of us.
I have a wealthy friend who has worked hard all
his life and has amassed a great deal of money. He came
from very modest beginnings; as a child he and his family never knew if
there would be enough - enough food, enough clothing, or enough money to
manage the large family from which he came. Determined to find a better life
for himself, and later for his wife and family, he used and still uses his dynamic
personality and business acumen to succeed financially and otherwise in the
corporate world. He and I have a friendly banter about sharing what we have
and holding on to it.
As you probably read in last week’s edition of the Annual Report, we
still carry capital loans. We are very close to eliminating our debt. For the
third time (due probably to a little bit of luck and a lot of God’s providence)
we are in the debt reduction program of the Annual Catholic Appeal. I am
sure the debt reduction program will not happen again in my tenure as your
pastor - or probably ever. Every cent we raise - and yes you have heard this
before - will be matched and will go against our debt to the Archdiocese.
We are in the final months of this appeal. This will be the official end of our
Legacy Campaign. So far this year we have raised over $500,000. If we raise
roughly $400,000 more, Saint John Berchmans will be debt free for the fist
time in decades. What a goal! I think we can do it.We have just less than three
months.
As you know, I have been raising funds for one philanthropic cause
or another for as long as I can remember. When I was a boy I handled all
of the fundraising responsibilities for my older siblings’ obligations to their
respective schools. In college, I raised money to support a Milwaukee soup
kitchen. As a priest, I have encouraged financial support for the Archdiocese,
for the school at which I was a teacher and administrator, for Catholic
Charities and now for Saint John Berchmans. I follow the mendicant ways of
my patron Saint Francis.
I have plans to reach out to a wide audience to support this effort. I’m
going to invite my family and friends to “be not afraid.” I’m even going to
go to my friend with the pile on his chair! We have the widows inspire us.
BUT, we all have to be “all in” to get it done. I can go to the outsiders, but we
insiders MUST participate. Think about your year-end giving (or early 2016
giving - since we have until the end of January) and consider giving to the
Annual Catholic Appeal again. Give more than you think you can afford. I did,
and am. God will take care of all you need.
My friend, who in his heart of hearts is a good and generous man, often
finds himself on he receiving end of my appeals. When I came to Saint John
Berchmans almost ten years ago, I knew that we needed to raise a lot of
money to erase operating debt and to do the years old deferred structural
maintenance on our hundred-year-old facilities. My friend discovered that I
would soon be asking him to help, so every time I saw him, he reached into
his pocket, retrieved a single dollar bill and handed to me. He did that, mostly
jokingly, to prevent me from asking. He could simply say, “I gave.”
To give to this effort, there are Legacy envelopes on the tables in the
vestibule (or simply write Legacy/Debt on your envelope!) that you can drop
in the collection basket. You may also give online at www.givevcentral.org
(https://www.givecentral.org/location/13/8609). If you have questions on
either the Legacy Campaign or the Annual Catholic Appeal/Debt Reduction
Program, please contact Jennifer Cortez in the parish office.
Once we had a serious conversation about his reluctance to be a major
donor, even though he had the real capacity to do so. He spoke of an image
he had in his mind of having all the money he has made stacked on a chair
in his house. He saw the pile shrinking and panicked about what would
happen when it dwindled to nothing. I told him that I was pretty sure that
would not happen and that when we live generously, God provides. It took a
Peace,

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
THE BLOOD AND THE ROSE
Please join the Spanish community of Saint John Berchmans as we
prepare for the celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
On Sunday, November 29th - after the 11:30am Mass - we will be
showing the movie The Blood & The Rose.
Parish Announcements
A feature length theatrical documentary shot on location in
Mexico and Spain, The Blood & The Rose offers riveting interviews
with top experts in the fields of science, history and theology,
exploring the mystery of St. Juan Diego’sTilma and the miraculous
image that it bears. More than just a story about a distant event,
The Blood & The Rose is an invitation and a calling to emulate St.
Juan Diego in our own day, carrying the message of the Virgin of
Guadalupe – Patroness of the Americas and Patroness of Life –
into the culture in which we live.
FIRST EUCHARIST PREPARATIONS
This Sunday the children preparing to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation
and Eucharist for the first time will be taking part in a Rite of Enrollment at
the 9:45 a.m. Mass. Fr. Wayne will invite all these children to come forward.
He will bless them and ask the parish community to pray for them and their
families as they learn more about the Mass and get ready to welcome Jesus
more deeply into their lives. This year we have nearly 50 children from the
Religious Education program and St. John Berchmans School preparing to
receive these sacraments. The children have made prayer lambs that they will
be sharing with members of the parish. If you are gifted with one of these
lambs, please hold the child whose name you receive in special prayer during
this preparation time.
Admission is free, but a free-will offering will be collected to
defray the costs of our December 12th celebration of Our Lady
of Guadalupe.
FEAST OF OUR LADY OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE
On Sunday, November 22nd, we will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of
Divine Providence, patroness of Puerto Rico. The day will begin with Mass
at 11:30am and a reception will follow in the Parish Hall. All are welcome!
Thanksgiving Day Mass
Please join us on Thanksgiving morning for a bilingual Mass at
9am. In support of our Food Pantry, we are asking everyone to
bring non-perishable food, which will be brought to the Altar
during the presentation of the gifts.
CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
On the weekend of November 21st and 22nd, our parish will hold the
collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD)
soon. The programs funded by CCHD change lives for the 46.2 million
people living in poverty here in the United States. Your donation will
empower local communities and strengthen families who are on the margins.
People with disabilities will find affordable and supportive housing, men and
women reentering society after incarceration will have the opportunity to
learn new skills, and community agriculture projects will receive grants to
become sustainable. Please help us continue this good work by supporting the
collection for CCHD.
What is a Taizé
Prayer Service?
ANNUAL REPORT
Music is an important part of
the prayer life at Taizé. They
have accumulated a large
repertoire of songs, which have become widely used around the
world, most of it written by Jacques Berthier. The music helps to
foster a contemplative mood by the use of short, repetitive refrains
of one or two lines. A solo voice and several instruments provide
added harmony. The repetition is intended to help focus and
encourage contemplation. Some of this music is familiar to us here
at St. John Berchmans, and can be found in our Gather Hymnal,
including, Wait for the Lord, Jesus, Remember Me, Veni Sancte
Spiritus, Nada Te Turbe and Eat This Bread.
Our annual reports were passed out at all Masses last weekend. If you did
not receive a copy, please look for one in the vestibule or ask for one at the
office. It is very important for the future of Saint John Berchmans that not
only show the Archdiocese that we are vital in our mission, but also that we
are financially viable. We have come a long way, but we have a long way to
go and we must ALL do our part. If you have any questions about the annual
report, please contact the parish office.
2ND ANNUAL ADVENT POTLUCK DINNER
Please join the Peace and Justice/Paz y Justicia Commission of the Parish
Pastoral Council at their 2nd Annual Advent potluck dinner. The dinner will
take place in the Parish Hall at 4:30pm on Sunday, December 6th. ALL are
welcome...there will even be an activity for kids. Please bring a dish to share
that is traditional to your family and/or ethnicity, or simply your favorite
dish to bring to potlucks. Following the potluck, all are invited to continue
celebrating Advent at the 6:30pm Mass.
Please join us on Monday, November 30th at 7:00 PM for an evening
of song and prayer as we prepare for Advent, and the coming of the
Lord.

Wayne’s World
No Temer
Queridos Amigos,
¡No temas!
posesiones y limita nuestra generosidad.
Como sacerdote, he
esfuerzo. Voy a invitar a mi familia y amigos a “no temer”.
inspiran. PERO, todos debemos ser incluidos para lograrlo. Puedo recurrir a
www.givevcentral.org (https://www.givecentral.org/location/13/8609). Si

THE BLOOD AND THE ROSE
película The Blood & The Rose.
Anuncios Parroquiales
de México y España, The Blood & The Rose ofrece fascinantes
a presentarse.

Wait for the Lord, Jesús, Remember Me, Veni Sancte Spiritus, Nada te
Turbe, y Eat This Bread.
