Stewardship Thought for
the Week
Today’s readings speak of hospitality.
Abraham, who cheerfully did for his
guests all that desert hospitality
required, was rewarded with his
heart’s desire — a son. Martha also
busied herself with all the details of
hospitality, but grudgingly and with
complaint. Am I a cheerful or a
grudging giver?

Martha and Mary are two sisters; they also have a brother, Lazarus, but he does not
appear on this occasion. Jesus is passing through their village and, the text says,
Martha received him at her home (cf. 10: 38). This detail enables us to understand
that Martha is the elder of the two, the one in charge of the house. Indeed, when
Jesus has been made comfortable, Mary sits at his feet and listens to him while
Martha is totally absorbed by her many tasks, certainly due to the special Guest. We
seem to see the scene: one sister bustling about busily and the other, as it were,
enraptured by the presence of the Teacher and by his words. A little later Martha,
who is evidently resentful, can no longer resist and complains, even feeling that she
has a right to criticize Jesus: “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to
serve alone? Tell her then to help me”. Martha would even like to teach the Teacher!
Jesus on the other hand answers her very calmly: “Martha, Martha”, and the
repetition of her name expresses his affection, “you are anxious and troubled about
many things; only one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which
shall not be taken away from her” (10: 41-42). Christ's words are quite clear: there is
no contempt for active life, nor even less for generous hospitality; rather, a distinct
reminder of the fact that the only really necessary thing is something else: listening
to the word of the Lord; and the Lord is there at that moment, present in the Person
of Jesus! All the rest will pass away and will be taken from us but the word of God is
eternal and gives meaning to our daily actions.
This Gospel passage is more than ever in tune with the vacation period, because it
recalls the fact that the human person must indeed work and be involved in domestic
and professional occupations, but first and foremost needs God, who is the inner
light of Love and Truth. Without love, even the most important activities lose their
value and give no joy. Without a profound meaning, all our activities are reduced to
sterile and unorganized activism. And who, if not Jesus Christ, gives us Love and
Truth? Therefore, brothers and sisters, let us learn to help each other, to collaborate,
but first of all to choose together the better part which is and always will be our
greatest good.

Ministers
(Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion, Lectors, Altar Servers,
Ushers, and Sacristans) on August 24th
from 8:30 am until 12:00 noon at the
main Church. Continental breakfast
will be served at 8:30 am.

Liturgical
ministers are
required to attend. The first meeting
will be conducted in Spanish.

Today, we are asked to support the church’s evangelization efforts among
African Americans and Native Americans in the United States. The Black and
Indian Mission support Catholic American Indian communities on reservations,
in rural
areas
and
inner
cities.
They also
support
African
American evangelization programs particularly in the south. Please be generous
supporting the Black and Indian Mission.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Our Religious Education office is open for registration for the upcoming
religious formation year from 3:00 to 6:00 pm on Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday. Please keep in mind that enrollment is limited.

Marta y María son dos hermanas; tienen también un hermano, Lázaro, quien en este
caso no aparece. Jesús pasa por su pueblo y —dice el texto— Marta le recibió (cf.
10, 38). Este detalle da a entender que, de las dos, Marta es la mayor, quien gobierna
la casa. De hecho, después de que Jesús entró, María se sentó a sus pies a escucharle,
mientras Marta está completamente ocupada en muchos servicios, debidos
ciertamente al Huésped excepcional. Nos parece ver la escena: una hermana se
mueve atareada y la otra como arrebatada por la presencia del Maestro y sus
palabras. Poco después, Marta, evidentemente molesta, ya no aguanta y protesta,
sintiéndose incluso con el derecho de criticar a Jesús: “Señor, ¿no te importa que mi
hermana me deje sola en el trabajo? Dile, pues, que me ayude”. Marta quería incluso
dar lecciones al Maestro. En cambio Jesús, con gran calma, responde: “Marta, Marta
—y este nombre repetido expresa el afecto—, te preocupas y te agitas por muchas
cosas; y hay necesidad de pocas, o mejor, de una sola. María ha elegido la parte
buena, que no le será quitada” (Lc 10, 41-42). La palabra de Cristo es clarísima:
ningún desprecio por la vida activa, ni mucho menos por la generosa hospitalidad;
sino una llamada clara al hecho de que lo único verdaderamente necesario es otra
cosa: escuchar la Palabra del Señor; y el Señor en aquel momento está allí, ¡presente
en la Persona de Jesús! Todo lo demás pasará y se nos quitará, pero la Palabra de
Dios es eterna y da sentido a nuestra actividad cotidiana.
Esta página del Evangelio es especialmente adecuada al tiempo de vacaciones, pues
recuerda el hecho de que la persona humana debe trabajar, sí; empeñarse en las
ocupaciones domésticas y profesionales; pero ante todo tiene necesidad de Dios, que
es luz interior de amor y de verdad. Sin amor, hasta las actividades más importantes
pierden valor y no dan alegría. Sin un significado profundo, toda nuestra acción se
reduce a activismo estéril y desordenado. Y ¿quién nos da el amor y la verdad sino
Jesucristo? Por eso aprendamos, hermanos, a ayudarnos los unos a los otros, a
colaborar, pero antes aún a elegir juntos la parte mejor, que es y será siempre nuestro
mayor bien.

Abraham,
quien
alegremente hizo por sus invitados todo
lo que la hospitalidad del desierto
requería, fue recompensado con el anhelo
de su corazón — un hijo. Marta también
se ocupaba con todos los detalles de la
hospitalidad, pero de mala gana y
quejándose. ¿Doy yo con alegría o de
mala gana?

reservaciones, áreas rurales y centros urbanos. También apoya programas de
evangelización afroamericanos particularmente en el sur. Por favor sean generosos
apoyando la misión Afroamericana e Indígena.
EDUCACION RELIGIOSA
Ya comenzaron las inscripciones para el próximo año escolar de
formación religiosa. La oficina de Educación Religiosa estará abierta los

Consecration in Honor to the
Father of All Humanity
On Sunday, August 11th we are going
to Celebrate, as a community The Feast
of Consecration in Honor to the Father
of All Humanity. This implies that we
honor God our Father, and that we
consecrate ourselves to Him in a very
special way during EIGHT days, at the
end of which we will consecrate
ourselves to Him. During this
preparation of EIGHT days we will
read certain passages from the Bible
and other meditations, we will try to go
to daily Mass and Communion, we will
go to Confession, all of which will help
us to better know, love, serve, honor
and cooperate with the Plan of God, as
did our Blessed Mother Mary and Saint
Joseph her Spouse.
The Mass and Octave will begin on
Monday August 5th, and it will be a
Bilingual Mass at 7:00 pm in the Main
Church, so that more people may be
able to participate. Looking forward to
seeing you there.

Fiesta de Consagración en Honor al
Padre de Toda la Humanidad.
El domingo 11 de agosto vamos a
Celebrar como comunidad La Fiesta de
Consagración en Honor al Padre de
Toda la Humanidad. Esto implicaría
que nosotros honráramos a Dios Padre
y nos consagráramos a Él de un modo
muy especial durante OCHO días, al
final de los cuales nos consagraremos a
ÉL. En esta preparación de OCHO días
haremos lecturas de las Sagradas
Escrituras, meditaciones, procuraremos
asistir todo los días a La Santa Misa,
recibir la Santa Comunión, y el
Sacramento de Reconciliación, que nos
ayudarán a conocer mejor, amar,
servir, honrar y cooperar en el Plan de
Dios, como lo hizo nuestra Madre
María Santísima y su Esposo San José.
La Misa y la Octava empezarán el lunes
5 de agosto y será una Misa Bilingüe a
las 7:00 pm en la Iglesia principal, para
