He put his finger into the man’s ears and spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned… “Ephphatha!” – that is, “Be opened!” Immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. [Mark 7: 33-35] Every now and then, when we gather to give our praise and thanks to God, the day’s celebration is given over to wonder at God’s goodness. Today is one of those days. The scriptures tell of God’s gracious and merciful love. Jesus goes out to the fringes of his world, to foreign territory, to encounter a deaf-mute and heal him. He communicates to him in a way that can reach and touch him with the ultimate spiritual message: be opened! The man receives the message and is healed. Illness, sin, and evil close us down. They shrivel us up so that we are numb and unable to be open to the goodness of life. God’s grace opens us up to new life and healing. Today we pray in gratitude for all that God has done for us and we recognize those who have revealed God’s love to us in their loving service as we ponder who to nominate for the Bishop Gartland Service award. Question for the week: J esus wants to touch us and open us up to the love of God in a new way. Are you open to being touched and healed by the love of God? Are you grateful for how God has touched you? Your Pastor, Fr. Bob Loaves and Fishes Sunday! Thank you, all who brought canned goods for the hungry as part of your Sunday offering. The Anointing of the Sick will be available after each Mass for those who wish to be prayed over. Place your hands on the person in front of you who is being anointed and pray for them first, that God will give them the healing that they need to be open again to the fullness of life. Priests’ Retreat this week: We remember to pray for all our priests this week. We welcome our former pastor, Fr. Thomas Healy, back this weekend to visit with us. The only Mass during the weekdays will be the Labor Day Mass at 9 AM Monday in the Chapel. When you participate, your offering will be securely transferred directly into the parish bank account. And you won’t have to remember to write a check or stop by the ATM before mass! For your convenience donations can be made from your checking account, debit card, or credit card. As is typical for all electronic transactions, the church pays a small processing fee for each transaction. These administrative fees are lower for ACH/check transactions and slightly higher for credit card transactions so please consider using your checking account to make your donation. We will be evaluating online giving for the next 8 weeks to see if it is something our parishioners would like to continue to use. After the evaluation period, the parish will have to pay a $20 monthly support and security fee to E-Catholic. If there isn’t sufficient demand, we may discontinue the service.
