With all the sources of light available in our modern technological world, the humble candle still has pride of place in worship. In fact, the General Instruction on the Roman Missal, which regulates everything having to do with the celebration of the Mass, requires that candles be used (par. 117). Why such an emphasis on candles? Candles, and candlelight, are a sign of Christ's presence in our midst. The Easter Vigil itself, the most solemn celebration of the year, begins with the preparation and lighting of the Paschal Candle, which then leads the whole congregation into the darkened church, the Light of Christ enlightening the world. Throughout the year, the Paschal Candle is used at baptisms and funerals and on other occasions to remind us that Christ, the Light of the World, is with us, and that his love and care cannot be extinguished. From this understanding of the light of Christ flows our use of candles throughout our worship: the candles given to the newly baptized, the candles on the altar, the votive candles that we light as a form of prayer. As a candle burns, it consumes itself, transforming its substance into light. In this way, the candle symbolizes Christ's own sacrifice: Jesus gives himself entirely for us, sacrificing himself on the cross in order that we may have life, allowing himself to be transformed into that light of the world which cannot be overcome, and by which we are led out of the darkness of sin and into a luminous life with God. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation, marking the day when Mary and Joseph presented Jesus to the priest in the temple, following ancient Jewish law. When Simeon receives Jesus, he praises God and says, "My eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel" (Luke 2:40). In this way Simeon identifies Jesus as the Light of the World, and for many centuries the Feast of the Presentation has been the traditional day when all the candles to be used in worship for the coming year are blessed. Our worship, and the whole of our lives, are illuminated by the love of Christ, manifested in his constant forgiveness and embrace, his constant pouring out of himself in order that we might be made whole. The simplicity of a burning candle is a constant, flickering reminder of that love of Jesus which never fails, which draws us as a moth to the flame, giving us life, freeing us from death. In the light of a candle we glimpse him who is our light, guiding us to our heavenly Father. ~ Fr John David Bulletin notices and advertising: All information must be sent to the parish office no later than 8AM on Mondays.
