The Way of Faith: Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Last Thursday our parish began the practice of weekly Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, which will take place between the
end of the 7 a.m. Mass and the beginning of the 6:30 p.m. Mass
each Thursday (except for Thanksgiving Day!). We are thus adding
to our long-time practice of First Friday Adoration, which will continue as it always has.
Adoration allows us to worship Jesus in the silence of our
hearts and opens us more and more deeply to his transforming love.
St. John Vianney tells the story of a local farmer who had entered
into his parish church on his way to the fields one morning to pray,
and had become lost in wonder as he sat before the Blessed Sacrament. By the end of the day a neighbor who had seen the man enter the church but never leave it went in and found him still there in
prayer. When the neighbor asked what he had been doing all day,
the farmer said, "I just look at God, and God looks at me."
This seems to me the essence of why the Lord draws us to
adore him in the Blessed Sacrament. In our busy, hectic, perplexing
lives, we can simply look at the Lord, be present to him, know that
he is there, offer him our joys and fears, our hopes and disappointments. And we know that he is listening, know that in the silence of
his presence we are being healed, comforted, strengthened by the
one who feeds us with his own very same body every time we receive communion at Mass.
There is enormous spiritual power in worshipping, praying before Christ in this way, for the church and for the world. We have
only to remember Pope Francis' call a few months ago for churches
around the world to spend an hour in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament for peace in Syria and the Middle East--and that soon after,
the threat of war with Syria ended. The power of this kind of prayer
is both very personal, and also world-changing.
I encourage all of us to take advantage of praying before the
Blessed Sacrament on Thursdays and First Fridays. Whether it is a
regular hour each week, an occasional visit, or even just a few minutes on the way home from work, I guarantee that spending time in
Adoration of our Lord will bring a freedom and wholeness, a peace
and joy that is unique, even as it strengthens us to be witnesses to
Jesus Christ in the world.
Fr. John David

Book Suggestion for November:
Winning The Discipline Debates
Looking for good advice about disciplining children? Popular
author and psychologist Ray Guarendi weaves his typical
humor and common sense into true-to-life “discipline
scenes” and offers “stage directions” to Mom and Dad.
Readable as a whole or in parts.
Helpful Marriage Tip: Fighting Fair Tip: Hold hands. It may
sound corny but try holding hands when discussing something sensitive. It physically reminds you that you may disagree about something, but that you’re still connected and
committed to each other.

Reaching Out into community
Thanksgiving Food Bags
Thank you so very much for all the food support you
have offered to the Thanksgiving Food Bags!
It is now time to fill the bags and send them out into our
community. We will meet at Manion Hall on
November 23 @ 9am to fill the remaining Bags.
After all the Masses on the weekend of 11-23 & 24 these
bags will available for parishioners to take out into the
community. Ultimately, we have not fed the poor until
these bags are off property.
No sign-up is needed. Your family is invited to find a bag
and take it to the family on the map. It can be challenging to make the decision to take a bag to an unknown
place and family… your smile and well wishes are
desperately needed in situations of struggle and poverty.
Will you bring Christ into the world this Thanksgiving?

them hanging down the windows in the commons.
Please register your angel in the sign-up book. One is
