It is another thing. In the liturgy, God is present....[In the Mass we are] entering into the mystery of God, allowing ourselves to be led to the mystery and being part of the mystery " The Holy Father's words may come as something of a surprise to many of us. Isn't fellowship fundamental to our weekly gathering for Mass? The answer is both "yes" and "no". On the one hand, we come together as an extended family, and there is great joy in seeing each other, encouraging each other in faith, and supporting each other through our time together. On the other hand, the actual celebration of the Mass is not about our fellowship. It is about the gathered community worshipping God through Jesus Christ, who is truly present in our midst in the Eucharist, his Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. In Mass Jesus draws us to the Father through himself, and gives us access to the Heavenly Banquet. The traditional structure of a church building, including our own, is a reflection of this reality. We move from the noisy outside world, into a narthex or gathering space where we great each other in Christ and begin to prepare internally for worship. Then we move into the church, the worship space, where our entire focus is upon encountering the Lord who comes into our midst, teaches us, and makes us whole. This is why sacred silence has always played such an important role in worship. Especially in the modern world, which is constantly noisy, it is very hard to enter into the silence, where Christ speaks to us in his gentle, quiet voice. Jesus never yells. And so, if we wish to hear his voice in our hearts and minds, we must quieten our hearts and minds. Spending five or ten minutes prior to the beginning of Mass in silent prayer opens us to Christ, and to the truly extraordinary presence of Christ throughout Mass. Likewise, throughout Mass there are periods of silence that allow us to recollect ourselves and refocus on Christ. The habit of keeping silence in Mass also helps us to find a bit of silence here and there throughout the week, in which we begin to discover more fully Christ's constant presence with us. I want to encourage us all to deepen the habit of sacred silence both before and during Mass, and throughout the week. When we are able to develop both external and internal silence in our lives, we find a deeper awareness of the immediacy of Christ present with us, and so a deeper trust in and love for the one who first loved us. ~ Fr John David Bulletin notices and advertising: All information must be sent to the parish office no later than 8AM on Mondays.
