SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 9, 2012
SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
DECEMBER 9, 2012
We are now in the Year of Faith which continues through November of 2013. During this year, all Catholics will
have an opportunity to reflect on the Year of Faith through prayer, study of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and
study of the Second Vatican Council documents.
▪ During October and November, Msgr. Holmes presented four homilies on Dei Verbum, Vatican II’s Constitution
on Divine Revelation. Audio and notes for these homilies are posted on our website. In January and February,
2013, Msgr. Holmes will present four homilies on Lumen Gentium, Constitution on the Church.
▪ Nine neighborhood discussion groups are now meeting. Please see our website for complete information.
▪ Copies of the Catechism of the Catholic Church in large-format English edition are available for sale in the parish
office for $15.00.

Bless Our Priests Collection This Weekend
Please remember the retired priests of our diocese by making a gift to the
Bless Our Priests Retirement collection. This collection is used to cover the
basic expenses of our retired priests, including rising medical and longterm care costs. Please return your gift in the special envelope in your
packet, or use an envelope available on the kiosks. Your generosity supports retired priests from all 11 counties of our diocese.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration
On the vigil of the feast this Tuesday, December 11th, the principal Mass
for Our Lady of Guadalupe will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer beginning at 10:00 pm. A presentation of the story and rosary will precede the
Mass at 7:00 pm. Mariachis will play for the Mass and serenade the Virgin with the mañanitas until 1:00 am. Food will be shared after the mañanitas. All are invited to come and take part in these festivities, but be
advised that they are entirely in Spanish and are typically very crowded.
The Hispanic Community would like to extend to English-speaking
parishioners a special invitation to join in a bilingual Mass on
Wednesday evening, December 12th. Msgr. Holmes and Fr. José Luis
Vazquez will concelebrate this Mass, which begins at 8:00 pm at Holy
Redeemer.
Parish Brunch Next Sunday
The monthly Parish Brunch will take place after the 9:00 am Mass at Holy Redeemer next Sunday, December 16th. All parishioners and their
guests are invited to join us for food and fellowship. Donations are
gratefully accepted.
Christmas Altar Flowers
We will be decorating the beautiful sanctuaries at Holy Redeemer and St.
Patrick Churches with flowers for the Christmas season. Plants may be
purchased through the parish and designated as a memorial to a loved
one. Cash ($10 per plant) or checks, payable to Cathedral Parish, may be
placed in the collection basket in an envelope marked “Altar Flowers.”
Kindly include the name(s) of those you wish remembered. Memorials
received by this Sunday, December 9th, will be acknowledged in the
Christmas bulletin.
Children’s Gifts Due Today
Thank you for your contributions of unwrapped Christmas gifts and
cash donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Christmas Toy and Clothing
Drive. This Sunday is the last day for contributions.
Quo Vadis Meeting This Friday Evening
Single men of all ages are invited to the Quo Vadis discernment evening
on Friday, December 14th, 6:30-9:30 pm at the parish rectory (next to Holy
Redeemer Church). Join us for food, social, Eucharistic Adoration, prayer,
small group discussion and a guest speaker. For more information, call

Second Sunday of Advent
December 9, 2012
 FROM THE RECTOR 
Dear Friends in Christ:
In the bulletin of October 28, 2012, I wrote to you about the prospect of
a complete renovation of the Holy Redeemer School building into student housing, especially to serve those associated with St. Paul’s.
As you will probably recall, the reason
we are developing this proposal on the
“fast track” is that the old roof on that
building has failed, and is now beyond
repair. That is the reason that the plastic has appeared on that roof. It’s a stop
gap measure that is intended to keep
water out of the building until we can
move forward with long term plans.
But with the roof in such precarious
condition, we can no longer count on
having usable space for Religious Education in that building. We have asked
Catholic Charities to vacate the old St.
Patrick Convent (just east of the church) by the end of the year, and after the Christmas holidays our Religious Education classes will be held
there. Full information on the new schedule there will be forthcoming
very shortly.
The plan for the renovation of Holy Redeemer School has been developed by Mark Landgraf (Landgraf Construction), working in collaboration with Kothe Real Estate Partners and Insite Consulting Architects
(who specialize in the reuse of historic buildings). Last Wednesday
evening, this group made a presentation on the project to our parish
Finance Council. Scott Berger, who works for the Diocese of Madison
as a consultant on building issues, was also in attendance. I think it is
fair to say that the proposal was received enthusiastically by the Finance Council. They did recommend that we proceed with it.
I also want to give everyone in the parish a chance to be fully informed
about this project – something that requires more space than is available
in the bulletin. So my intention is to publish a very full description of
the rationale for this project and the financial details on the parish website. Given the busyness of this season and our need to move forward
with this project quickly, I think that this is the best way to get the maximum amount of information out to all interested parties. The website
will also allow us to post good questions that parishioners raise, and the
answers.
Your response to the information posted on line will be what I use to
gauge the support of the parish at large. That will be an important element of the presentation that will soon need to be made to the Diocesan
Building Commission.
Please look for that complete summary of the project to be posted on
the parish website by this coming Thursday. Print copies will be available through the office for those who do not have easy internet access.

tanto me cuesta”.
