The March for Life, held each year in Washington, D.C., began as a small demonstration on
January 22, 1974, the first anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade. the
largest pro-life event in the world. The peaceful demonstration that has followed on this
somber anniversary every year since is a witness to the truth concerning the greatest human
rights violation of our time, abortion. The West Deanery (including St. Monica ) will be taking
a bus (or more depending on the number of participants ) to March for Life at Washington

Una Nota de su Parroco
What does it mean to be a holy family?
I think in order to understand how to be a holy family we must at least understand what it means to be “holy”. The
USCCB Catechism for Adults offers this as a definition: “A state of goodness in which a person – with the help of God’s
grace, the action of the Holy Spirit, and a life of prayer – is freed from sin and evil. Such a person, when gifted with
holiness, must still resist temptation, repent of sins that may be committed, and realize that remaining holy is a
life-long pilgrimage with many spiritual and moral challenges. The struggles evident in the lives of saints are
Instructive when trying to explain and describe holiness (p. 514).”
If you are like me, you might have found this to be a little too complicated to apply to our busy and active families. A
simpler definition might be this: holiness is choosing to follow Jesus. We pray to Him and then ask Him to lead us to
where he wants us to be. If we do this regularly we will be seeking holiness. A holy family is one that is trying to do
this together, led ideally by a husband and wife they and their children work to pray together and are always seeking
his will for them as a family.
The Holy Family of Mary, Joseph and their son, Jesus, are held up today as the ideal “Holy Family” yet they had the
same challenges, busyness, and difficult circumstances that we all deal with. They had to go to temple, report for the
census, and at one point flee to Egypt out of fear for their lives. Yet through it all Mary, Joseph and Jesus prayed and
always followed God, never their own will. They teach us that seeking God’s will and following Him in all things is
what it means to be a holy family.

¿Qué significa ser una familia santa?
Pienso que para poder entender lo que significa ser una familia santa debemos por lo menos entender lo que
significa ser “santo”. El Catecismo USCCB para Adultos nos da esta definición: “Un estado de bondad en el que una
persona – con la ayuda de la gracias de Dios, la acción del Espíritu Santo, y una vida de oración – es liberada del
pecado y del mal. Tal persona, cuando dotada de santidad, debe todavía resistir las tentaciones, arrepintiéndose de
los pecados que haya cometido y darse cuenta de que mantenerse en santidad es un peregrinaje de por vida, con
muchos retos espirituales y morales. Las dificultades evidentes en las vidas de los santos son aleccionadoras cuando
se explica y describe la santidad (p. 563).”
Si usted es como yo, usted puede encontrar esto un poco complicado de aplicar a nuestras familias ocupadas y
activas. Una simple definición puede ser esto: la santidad es decidir seguir a Jesús. Orarle y Pedirle que nos lleve a
donde Él quiera que estemos. Si hacemos esto regularmente buscaremos la santidad. Una familia santa es una que
intenta hacer esto juntos, dirigida idealmente por un esposo y esposa y sus niños que trabajan para orar juntos y
buscan siempre cumplir Su voluntad en ellos como familia.
La Sagrada Familia de María, José y Su Hijo Jesús es un ideal hoy de lo que es la “Familia Santa” aunque ellos tienen
los mismos retos, las mismas ocupaciones, y circunstancias difíciles con las que todos tratamos. Tenían que ir al
templo, reportarse en el censo, y en un momento huir a Egipto pues temían por sus vidas. Sin embargo, a pesar de
todo María, José y Jesús oraron y siempre buscaron hacer la voluntad de Dios, nunca la de ellos. Ellos nos enseñaron
que el buscar la voluntad de Dios y seguirle en todas las cosas es lo que significa el ser una familia santa.

RESPECT LIFE
ABOUT THE MINISTRY
Our committee focuses on educating the St. Monica
community about respect for life from conception to natural
death especially in those situations where life is actually
threatened like abortion, euthanasia, stem cell research, and
contraception. (Yes, some contraceptive measures are lethal
for the fertilized egg!)
SPIRITUAL GIFTS REQUIRED: A spiritual awareness of what
the popes have called “The Culture of Death” that we live in
and a desire to love and protect the lives of all people.
SKILLS REQUIRED: Creativity, Organization, Teaching
TIME COMMITMENT: one 2-hour meeting a month and
participation in other events throughout the year.
HOW THIS MINISTRY MAKES A DIFFERENCE
People become more aware of what they can do to foster
respect for human life. Our work can actually save lives and
help heal those who have been wounded by abortion.

O Come Let Us Adore Him!
All are invited to "come... adore Him, Christ the Lord,"
especially the families and children who learned about
adoration this Advent--during special adoration hours
from December 28-31. On Monday, December 28 and
Tuesday, December 29, Adoration will be held from
6-7:30 pm in the current sanctuary space (gym).
On Wednesday, December 30, Adoration will be held in
the PMC from 6-7:30 pm. And on Thursday, December 31,
bring in the New Year in the most special way possible-adoring the Real Presence of Christ from 11 pm-midnight,

Parish Garden Meeting
All interested gardeners are invited to attend the next Parish
Garden meeting on Saturday, January 16 at 10:30 AM in the
Parish Meeting Center (PMC) Room 3. We will be planning
for a large garden of fresh vegetables in the 2016 growing
season to provide people who use the Lord's Pantry with

Curtis serves on the State Council for Indiana SHRM, is Chair
of the Strategic planning committee at Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel, is a member of IndySHRM and the Carmel Rotary,
and serves on the Fine Arts Alliance Steering Committee for
Guerin Catholic High School. In June 2013, JoDee was named
the IndySHRM Professional of the Year.

All Sunday School morning programs, Faith Formation and
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd will meet this
weekend at 9:15 am and 11:15 am. All sessions will NOT

Is the Holy Spirit calling you to share your time and

next Sister Parish mission trip and visit is June 9 - 16.

Doctrina
NO tendremos clases hoy 27 de diciembre o el 3 de
enero debido a las vacaciones de Navidad. Todas las
clases se reanudarán el domingo, 10 de enero.
Reunión del Jardín de la Parroquia
Todos los jardineros interesados están invitados a asistir
a la próxima reunión del Jardín de la Parroquia el sábado, 16 de enero a las 10:30 AM en el PMC (La Casita) en
el salón 3. Tendremos la planeación para un jardín grande para plantar vegetales para la cosecha del 2016 para
poder proporcionar a la Despensa del Señor vegetales

¡Oh Vamos a Adorarlo!
Todos están invitados a "venir a... adorar, a Cristo el
Señor," especialmente las familias y los niños quienes
aprendieron acerca de la adoración este Adviento—
durante las horas especiales de adoración del 28-31 de
diciembre. El lunes, 28 y martes 29 de diciembre, la
Adoración será de 6-7:30 pm en el Santuario (gimnasio).
El miércoles, 30 de diciembre, la Adoración será en el
PMC (Casita) de 6-7:30 pm. Y el jueves, 31 de diciembre,
reciba el Año Nuevo en una manera especial—adorando
la Presencia Real de Cristo de 11 pm-hasta la media
noche, después de esto tendremos un poco de comida
ligera para compartir.

Viaje a Nuestra Parroquia Hermana del 2016
¿Está el Espíritu Santo llamándote a compartir tu tiempo y
talentos con nuestros hermanos y hermanas en
Honduras? Nuestro próximo viaje de misión es del 9 – 16 de
junio. Las tres reuniones de información proporcionarán toda
la información que los feligreses necesitan saber acerca del
viaje. Por favor venga a una de estas sesiones y aprenda
acerca de esta fantástica oportunidad de profundizar su
relación con nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Lepaterique.
Las reuniones se llevarán a cabo el 17 de enero, 21 de
febrero, y 13 de marzo a las 2:30 pm. Si usted está interesado

Legión de María
La Legión de María le invita a todas las personas a que nos
acompañen a recitar el Santo Rosario todos los domingos en la
Iglesia a las 2:00pm (después de Misa de 12:30).
Misa
No tiene que esperar el domingo para asistir a la
Santa Misa. Venga de lunes a jueves a las 5:30. Seguido
de la Adoración al Santísimo hasta las 9:00 pm. Esta Misa
NO cumple con su obligación del domingo.
Inglés Como Segunda Idioma
Clases de inglés como segundo idioma para
principiantes e intermediarios empezarán el 9 de
septiembre. Las clases son cada martes y jueves de
6:30 p.m. a 8:30 p.m.

El Año de la Misericordia: Las Obras Corporales de Misericordia
Las Obras Corporales de Misericordia se encuentran en las enseñanzas de Jesús y nos dicen cómo debemos de
tratar a todos los demás, como de los hiciéramos con Cristo. Estas "son acciones caritativas en las que ayudamos a
nuestro prójimo en sus nesidades” (USCCA). Ellas responden a las necesidades básicas de la humanidad al caminar
juntos en la jornada de esta vida. Las siete Obras Corporales de Misericordia están enlistadas abajo. Después de
cada obra de Misericordia hay también algunas sugerencias y consejos para vivirlos en nuestras vidas diarias.
ALIMENTAR AL HAMBRIENTO
Hay muchas personas en este mundo que no tiene comida. Cuando muchos de nosotros tiramos la comida,
considere buenas prácticas de corresponsabilidad en sus hábitos
alimenticios que puedan beneficiar a otros que no tiene los mismos recursos.
* ¿Tiene comida deliciosa para los días festivos? Done comida a una despensa para que así todos tengan algo para
comer.
* Investigue, identifique y contribuya financieramente a
organizaciones que ayuden a los que no tienen que comer.
* Intente no comprar comida de más. Si usted nota que está tirando mucha de su comida cada semana, el comprar
menos cosas podría eliminar el que las tire y así podría ahorrar ese dinero y donarlo a los necesitados.
DAR DE BEBER AL SEDIENTO
Muchos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo no tienen acceso a agua limpia y sufren de necesidades
básicas. Debemos apoyar los esfuerzos por los que trabajan hacia una mayor accesibilidad de este recurso
esencial.
* Damos por sentado que tenemos acceso a agua limpia. Done a los
Servicios de Socorros Católicos para ayudar a construir pozos de agua para los necesitados
* Organice un grupo de niños involucrados en un equipo deportivo (ejem. futbol) o un campamento de verano. Invítelos a recolectar botellas de agua
para distribuirlas en los albergues familiares. Si los padres pueden
involucrarse, pídales que acompañen a los niños a entregar las aguas a las familias. Haga lo mismo para grupos de jóvenes y jóvenes adultos.
* Haga un esfuerzo por no desperdiciar agua. Recordando cerrar la llave del agua cuando se está lavando los dientes o lavando los trastes puede ayudar,
especialmente en regiones que están en sequía.
DAR ALBERGUE AL QUE NO TIENE
Hay muchas circunstancias que pueden llevar a una persona quedarse sin hogar. Cristo nos anima a salir y conocer a quienes no tienen un hogar,
afirmándoles lo valioso que son, y ayudarles a buscar una solución a los retos que enfrentan.
* Sea voluntario algunas veces en los albergues para los desamparados.
* Done tiempo o dinero a organizaciones para construir casas para los
necesitados.
* Hay tres millones de niños y familias que se mueven, huyen de la guerra, enfermos, hambrientos y viviendo en condiciones inhumanas, y buscan paz y
lugares seguros. Una a grupos parroquiales de niños, jóvenes, jóvenes adultos, y familias para investigar algunas causas y retos que estas familias enfrentan para sobrevivir. Contacte Servicios Sociales Católicos, u oficinas diocesanas de paz y justicia para ayudar con sus investigaciones. Busque maneras
de proporcionar albergue para los desamparados localmente, regionalmente, nacionalmente o internacionalmente.
VISITE AL ENFERMO
Aquellos que están enfermos o que son olvidados o evadidos. A pesar de su enfermedad, estas personas todavía tienen mucho que ofrecer a aquellos
que se toman el tiempo para visitarlos y consolarlos.
* Done sangre o considere donar médula ósea.
* Pase tiempo siendo voluntario en un asilo u hospital .
* Tome tiempo para visitar a los ancianos en su vecindario.
* Ofrezca ayudar a sus familiares con enfermedades crónicas muy seguido o regularmente. Dé a las personas que los cuidan un descanso de sus responsabilidades para que puedan descansar, terminen sus tareas personales, o solamente tengan un buen descanso.
VISITE A LOS PRISONEROS
Las personas en la cárcel todavía son personas, hechas a la imagen y semejanza de Dios. No importa lo que hayan hecho, ellos merecen la oportunidad
de escuchar la palabra de Dios y encontrar la Verdad del mensaje de Cristo.
* Involúcrese en el Ministerio Kairos de Sta. Mónica y lleve la Luz de Cristo a los hombres y mujeres en sus prisiones locales.
ENTERRAR A LOS MUERTOS
Los funerales nos dan la oportunidad de entristecernos y mostrar nuestro apoyo durante tiempos difíciles. A través de nuestras oraciones y acciones
durante estos tiempos mostramos nuestro respeto por la vida, que es siempre un don de Dios, y consolar a los afligidos.
* Envíe una tarjeta de condolencias a alguien que recientemente ha perdido un ser querido.
* Visite un cementerio y ore por sus seres queridos que han fallecido—y por quienes no tienen quien los visite y ore por ellos.
* Pase tiempo planeando los arreglos para su propio funeral—Esto librará a sus seres queridos de un estrés extra al hacer esto en medio del dolor.
DE LIMOSNA A LOS POBRES
Done dinero a organizaciones que tienen la habilidad de proporcionar apoyo y servicios a los necesitados. Haga una investigación y encuentre

The Year of Mercy: The Corporal Works of Mercy
The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all
others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They "are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their
bodily needs" (USCCA). They respond to the basic needs of
humanity as we journey together through this life. The seven Corporal Works of Mercy are listed below. After
each work of mercy there are also suggestions and words of advice for living them out in our daily lives.
FE ED T HE HU NG R Y
There are many people in this world who go without food. When so much of our food goes to waste, consider
how good stewardship practices of your own food habits can benefit others who do not have those same
resources.
 Having delicious food on holidays? Donate to a food pantry so everyone can have something to eat.
 Research, identify and contribute financially to organizations that serve the hungry.
 Try not to purchase more food than you are able to eat. If you notice that you end up throwing groceries
away each week, purchasing less groceries would eliminate waste and allow you to donate the
savings to those in need.
GIVE DRINK TO THE THRISTY
Many of our brothers and sisters in Christ do not have access to clean water and suffer from the lack of this basic necessity. We should support
the efforts of those working towards greater accessibility of this essential resource.
 We take it for granted that we have access to clean water. Donate to Catholic Relief Services to help build wells for water for those in
need
 Organize a group of children involved on a sports team (e.g. soccer) or a summer camp. Invite them to collect bottled water to distribute
at a shelter for families. If parents can be involved, ask them to accompany their children in delivering the water to the families. Do the
same for youth and young adult groups.
 Make an effort not to waste water. Remembering to turn off the water faucet when you are brushing your teeth or washing dishes can
help, especially in regions suffering from drought.
SHELTER THE HOMELESS
There are many circumstances that could lead to someone becoming a person without a home. Christ encourages us to go out and meet those
without homes, affirming their worth and helping them seek a resolution to the challenges they face.
 Volunteer some time at a local homeless shelter.
 Donate time or money to organizations that build homes for those who need shelter.
 There are millions of children and families who are on the move, fleeing from war, illness, hunger and impossible living conditions, and
searching for peace and safety. Engage parish groups of children, youth, young adults, and families in doing some research on the causes
and challenges that these families face to survive. Contact Catholic Social Services, or diocesan offices of peace and justice for help with
your research. Seek ways to provide shelter for the homeless locally, regionally, nationally or internationally.
VISIT THE SICK
Those who are sick are often forgotten or avoided. In spite of their illness, these individuals still have much to offer to those who take the time
to visit and comfort them.
 Give blood or consider donating bone marrow.
 Spend time volunteering at a nursing home or hospital .
 Take time to stop and visit with an elderly neighbor.
 Offer to assist caregivers of chronically sick family members on a one-time or periodic basis. Give caregivers time off from their caregiving responsibilities so they can rest, complete personal chores, or enjoy a relaxing break.
VISIT THE PRISONERS
People in prison are still people, made in the image and likeness of God. No matter what someone has done, they deserve the opportunity to
hear the Word of God and find the Truth of the message of Christ.
 Get involved in St. Monica’s Kairos Ministry and bring the Light of Christ to men and women in local prison facilities.
BURY THE DEAD
Funerals give us the opportunity to grieve and show others support during difficult times. Through our prayers and actions during these times
we show our respect for life, which is always a gift from God, and comfort to those who mourn.
 Send a sympathy card to someone who has recently lost a loved one.
 Visit the cemetery and pray for those you have lost—and for those who no longer have family to visit and pray for them.
 Spend time planning your own funeral arrangements—This will spare your loved ones the extra stress of doing so in a time of grief.
GIVE ALMS TO THE POOR
Donate money to organizations that have the ability to provide support and services for those in need. Do research and find organizations that
put people in need first, rather than profit.
 Skip the morning latte and put that money in the collection basket at church.
 Find a charity that is meaningful to you and volunteer your time or donate.
 This Lent, give up eating out at restaurants. Pack you meals and donate the extra money to charities.
