Page 2 August 7, 2011 Welcoming/Registration Our next parish Registration/ Welcoming will be next Sunday, August 14, after the 10AM Mass in the Commons Meeting Space. You will be given Parish information & a brief tour of the property, and will complete a registration form which will ask which sacraments your family members have received. We look forward to meeting you. THE SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Holy Day of Obligation. However, when it falls on a Saturday or a Monday, as it does this year, the obligation to attend Mass is abrogated (temporarily waved). In this case, Catholics in the United States are not required to attend Mass. Of course, even in those years when we aren't required to attend, celebrating our Blessed Mother by attending Mass is a wonderful way to honor her. We will celebrate Mass at 7 AM on Monday, August 15. Space Worship Center Worship Center Dear OLMC Community, It is with a heavy heart that I will be wishing you all farewell as your Family Life Director. I have greatly enjoyed my time here over the past three years getting to know many of you through the Healing Ministry and People of Faith Gatherings. Everyone has been so warm and welcoming towards me. I will not be a stranger and I wish you all the love, peace, and joy that flows from God’s grace. Many blessings to you all, Jenn Del Corso The New Roman Missal THE CREED, CONT. The changes to the Creed continue this week: “Incarnate” (replaces the word “born”). It means something that is given flesh. We profess that the Word became flesh in the womb of Mary not when Jesus was born as the previous translations could be misunderstood to say. Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit; not simply born of the Spirit. In the words of John’s gospel: “The word became flesh”. We now say that the Son “by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man”. “Suffered death” This replaces two verbs in the previous translation: “Suffered, died”. The literal translation from the Latin is that he suffered and was buried. The word suffered implies his dying. The verb died is not there in Latin and so “suffered death” is used to express what happened to Jesus. The main point is that he really died, and through that gave full meaning to his resurrection. “In accordance with the Scriptures” (replaces in fulfillment of the Scriptures). The previous implies that the Resurrection fulfills Old Testament prophecies, which it does, but the New Testament also proclaims the Resurrection. The revised translation broadens the meaning. “Adored” (replaces worshipped). Adored more readily transfers from the Latin. “I confess” (replaces “we acknowledge”). This is a more forceful expression. Here “confess” means profess belief in--not an expression of sorrow. It is meant to involve the heart as well as the head. “I look forward to the resurrection”. This replaces our former saying of we “look for the resurrection”. It is a clearer translation of the Latin and it meant to show our confidence and belief in God who gives us faith. This concludes the new translation of the Creed. The Creed allows us to express our trust to God. Why? God has first placed his trust in us by offering us his unconditional love. He now invites us to reciprocate back to that love. Next week we will begin the discussion on the Preparation of the Gifts. Page 3 August 7, 2011 Adult Faith Formation WORKSHOP ON THE MASS AND THE NEW ROMAN MISSAL New Words, Deeper Meaning, Same Mass: This THURSDAY NIGHT: AUGUST 11TH we continue our exploration of the words that will be changing in the Mass, beginning on the First Sunday of Advent.
