May 29, 2016 / 29 de Mayo d e 2016 SAINT MARY’S AND SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO PARISHES Parroquias de Santa María y San Carlos Borromeo El Santísimo Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo EUCHARISTIC REVERENCE PART II With the celebration of the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ this Sunday, it may be beneficial for every one of us to examine our Eucharistic practices. Last week, we focused on preparation for the Eucharist. The questions from last week are re-printed for people who did not see them last week. This week, it may be helpful to examine why we are receiving the Eucharist. What do we hope to gain by eating His Body and drinking His Blood? Some of the questions for examination come from the Eucharistic Prayer spoken by the priest. AREAS FOR EXAMINATION II The prayer asks that by partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit… so do I seek to be a peacemaker; a reconciler; one who forgives; one who makes sacrifices for others; an evangelizer after receiving Communion? Do I seek to pursue justice and mercy or do I just feel good after receiving Communion? Does having Jesus in me, encourage me to do the corporal and spiritual works of mercy? Does knowing that I have God within me help me persevere and continue being faithful? Do I show gratitude to God for the gift of the Eucharist… especially in ways which do not bring me human praise but are only known to God alone? Do I let others know, when possible, about the great gift of the Eucharist? Do I strive to continue the Sunday celebration after Mass; refraining from temporal work or manual labor? Do I make extra time for my children, parents, and grandparents, the sick, the elderly, those in nursing homes on that day? AREAS FOR EXAMINATION I How do I prepare to receive the Eucharist? Do I avail myself to Confession when necessary? Am I a peacemaker with others before going to Mass? Do I fast at least one hour before Mass? Do I make an effort to arrive on time or beforehand to pray quietly? How do I dress for Mass? Does my appearance reflect my inner desire to honor God? Do I make the effort to pray and sing? Is attending Mass a weekly priority or is it something I fit in when possible? Do I look at my phone and messages before or during Mass? Would I benefit from reading the Sunday Mass readings online before going to Church Do I invite others to join me at Mass in going to Church? Do I allow my children the gift of going to Mass? Do I do what is necessary so that my elderly relatives and neighbors can get to Church for Sunday? Am I friendly to the other worshippers before Mass without interrupting them if they are praying? Am I reverent when receiving the Blessed Host and Chalice? Have I offered to help out in some way as an usher/ greeter, communion minister, server or lector or am I waiting to be asked? HOME CARE OPPORTUNITY A parishioner, Loyce Namugamma, is starting a home care service. In order to receive approval from Medicare, her company must serve 10 clients for free. If you know someone who could benefit from this assistance, please call her at 857-243 -3814. 2 29 de Mayo 2016 PLEASE PRAY FOR. . . CALVARY CEMETERY MEMORIAL DAY MASS Father Michael will offer the Holy Mass for the dead at the Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum on Memorial Day, Monday May 30 at 9:00 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come and pray for the faithful departed. VETERANS AT MASS THIS SUNDAY 10:00 AM This Sunday the 10 a.m. Mass at St. Mary’s will be offered for the Veterans of Waltham. We welcome members of the City Veterans Affairs Office and veterans who have served in the military both long ago and more recently. Let us remember to help care for those who have returned from battle and those still living in areas of conflict and violence. They can use our support and prayers. The next day, the Veterans Affairs Office will sponsor a ceremony at the Waltham Common at 10:00 a.m. in honor of Memorial Day. CAR DONATION If anyone is selling a used modest car or wants to donate it to the parish, please contact the rectory. We will have priests in the coming months who will need to use one. A car donation to the Church is tax deductible. TRICKED The Social Justice Ministry at New Roads Catholic Community in Belmont (St. Joseph / St. Luke) is presenting the screening of "Tricked," a ground-breaking documentary about the trafficking of young people in the United States. The Boston area is featured in this film which only stresses the fact that this kind of trafficking knows no bounds. The film will be shown on Thursday, June 2 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Parish Hall, 130 Common Street, Belmont. THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON ON EARTH Mother’s Day was May 8, but the whole month of May honors our Mother Mary and our mothers. Someone passed this along to us and we wanted to share with you. The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral - a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby’s body. The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than all other creatures. God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation… What on God’s good earth is more glorious than this: to be a mother? – Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ May 29, 2016 SAINT MARY PARISH My brothers and sisters in Christ, This Sunday is the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ… the Body and the BLOOD OF CHRIST (Let us not forget the Blood of Christ.) In recognition of this great gift... and our obligation to share the Lord with others, we will process with the Blessed Sacrament through the downtown of Waltham. following the 11:30 a.m. Mass. We will bring the Lord into the streets. We will ask him to bless those who do not know him or have forgotten him. We will ask the Lord to bless the places where people come together for commerce and social interaction… that people may communicate and live together in harmony. We will bring the Lord to places where crimes have been committed, where people are caught in the snare of addictions to drugs, where people who have no place to lay their heads at night sleep in doorways. We will ask the Lord to bless all the places of business and storefronts that they may prosper and that their workers may be treated with dignity. We invite everyone to accompany the Lord in this procession. If you do not plan to attend the 11:30 a.m. Mass but want to join the procession, gather at the front of St. Mary’s Church around 12:30 and join us when we come out the front doors. We will make our way to St. Charles where there will be a time for Adoration and Solemn Benediction. – Father Michael THANK YOUS There have a been a number of beautiful events at Saint Mary’s the last few weeks and they would not have happened without the help of parishioners and volunteers. Last month, we were blessed with the diaconal ordination of Rev. Mr. Godfrey Musabe. The day after his ordination, he preached at the 1:30 p.m. Mass which was followed by a lunch in his honor. Many thanks to Betty Atuhaire for organizing the lunch and recruiting all the volunteers to serve and set-up. Last Saturday evening the Youth group put on a great talent show. The show included skits, dancing and singing from many different parishioners and groups within the parish. Thanks to the youth group for organizing the show. Thirdly, thanks to the musicians and those who made last Sunday’s organ recital happen. It was a wonderful afternoon and we hope to have more recitals in the future. HAITI CHURCH REBUILDING We have always relied on the generosity of parishioners who keep putting weekly donations in the Box for St. Peter’s Church which is in the back of the Church. We are looking to have a fundraiser, possibly a raffle, to see if we can raise more money that they need at this moment. If someone has an idea for a fundraiser that we might do as a parish please let us know the suggestion. Thanks to everyone who has not forgotten the Haitians who are still rebuilding from the earthquake of 2010. MASS INTENTIONS Masses intentions scheduled this week are listed below. Freedman THE NAME OF GOD IS MERCY – POPE FRANCIS Pope Francis has put together a book on Mercy. It is very helpful, so we continue to insert some of his thoughts. Q: A re the famous W orks of M ercy of the Christian tradition still valid for the third millennium, or do they need to be reevaluated? A: They ar e still valid, still cur r ent. Perhaps some aspects could be better “tr anslated,” but they r emain the basis for selfexamination. They help us open up to the mercy of God, to ask for the grace to understand that without mercy a person cannot do a thing, that you cannot do a single thing, that “the world would not exist,” in the words of the elderly lady I met in 1992. Let us examine the Seven Corporal Works of Mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, dress the naked, house the pilgrims, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, bury the dead. I do not think there is much to explain. And if we look at our situation, our society, it seems to me that there is no lack of circumstances or opportunities all around us. What should we do for the homeless man camped in front of our home, for the poor man who has nothing to eat, for the neighboring family who cannot make it to the end of the month due to the recession, because the husband lost his job? How should we behave with the immigrants who have survived the crossing and who land on our shores? What should we do for the elderly who are alone, abandoned, and who have no one? We have received freely, we give freely. We are called to serve Christ the Crucified through every marginalized person. We touch the flesh of Christ in he who is outcast, hungry, thirsty, naked, imprisoned, ill, unemployed, persecuted, in search of refuge. That is where we find our God, that is where we touch the Lord. Jesus himself told us, explaining the protocol for which we will all be judged: “whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did it for me” (Matthew 25:40). After the Corporal Works of Mercy come the Spiritual works of Mercy: advise those in doubt; teach the ignorant; admonish the sinners; console the afflicted; forgive offenses; be patient with annoying people; pray to God for both the living and the dead. Let us look at the first four spiritual Works of Mercy: Don’t they have to do with what we have already defined as “the apostolate of the ear”? Reach out, know how to listen, advise them, and teach them through our own experience. By welcoming a marginalized person whose body is wounded and by welcoming the sinner whose soul is wounded, we put our credibility as Christians on the line. Let us always remember the words of Saint John of the Cross: “In the evening of life, we will be judged on love alone.” 4 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Queridos hermanos en Cristo: Este domingo 29 de Mayo, llevaremos al Santísimo Sacramento en Procesión de la Parroquia de Santa María a la de San Carlos Borromeo.
