an island in the background where she sought spiritual rest. She

MISSION STATEMENT
The parish family of St. Canera sees as its mission to
work together and in the larger community to know,
love, and serve God. Based on Scripture, the sacraments, and our Roman Catholic tradition, we seek to
recognize our dependence on God, grow spiritually,
become images of Christ, educate adults and assist in
educating children, and as God’s instruments, share our
faith with and welcome others.

P. Hank

Pope Francis' encyclical on the environment,
Laudato Si': On Care for Our Common Home
Care for Creation
We show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship
of creation. Care for the earth is not just an Earth Day
slogan, it is a requirement of our faith. We are called to
protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God's creation. This environmental challenge has fundamental moral and ethical dimensions
that cannot be ignored.

2nd Reading: Ephesians 1:3-14
Gospel: Mark 6: 7-13
My dear sisters and brothers,
Prophets are usually not received very
well, especially when that prophet is already
familiar to us. We would like to somehow
have someone who is new, mysterious, and
comes from an exotic place. I suspect we
have all had the experience of the “visiting
expert”.
Underlying this lack of credibility of
someone familiar to us is an inability to see
God at work in the everyday, routine moments of our lives. It has
been said that for the believer there are no coincidences. This
saying challenges our perception that God only works “with a
mighty hand and an outstretched arm in our lives. Yet God can,
and indeed does, work in those ordinary, everyday moments that
don’t seem to be directed and produced by Cecil B. De Mille! (For
the younger among you, Mr. De Mille used to produce these huge,
spectacular Hollywood movies.)
Emmanuel continues to abide among us in all the various moments of our lives. He continues to create, redeem and sanctify
the more ordinary moments of our lives.
With fond affection,
Fr. Hank
Note: Thanks to Fr. Hank for continuing to share his reflections during
the past year. Fr. Derek will write the reflections starting next weekend!
