Del Padre Michael Shanahan, nuestro párroco
Last week, I had the opportunity to gather with several
hundred priests of the Association of U.S. catholic Priests
for an annual conference in Rosemont, IL. The purpose of the gathering was to pray together and discuss
many crucial issues facing the Catholic Church in
America today. One significant issue was the gun violence that is destroying the fabric of American culture. We only have to look at our own city to see the
increase in gun violence from past years. The priests
were asked to make a commitment to personal nonviolence in response to this cultural violence. We discussed the meaning on non-violence from our own Catholic perspective as well as several other traditions. As we
collectively embraced this proposal, I found myself reflecting on these well known words from Mahatma Gandhi: “You must be the change you want to see in the
world”. Gandhi put forth these principles of non violence:
• Truth is my religion and non-violence (love) is its only
realization.
• I vow to respect others and the interconnectedness of all
life.
• I vow to understand the “whys” (meaning behind
behavior), for myself and others.
• I seek to move beyond acceptance into appreciation and
celebration of difference.
• I commit to be truthful and authentic and to confront
untruth wherever I find it.
• I take on without complaint any suffering that results
from my confrontation with untruth. I also accept that all
forms of violence cannot be totally eliminated.
• I vow to help my adversary avoid all suffering, especially from our confrontation.
• Beyond personal necessities, I see myself as God’s trustee over my possessions and talents. I promise to use
them to empower others and make things fair for all.
I might consider these principles in light of Jesus’
words in today’s Gospel: “Go and do likewise”. Modern
day prophets may say we are each called to be ambassadors for peace and healing in our marriages, families, parishes, neighborhoods and nation. We are not spectators in
life. We have great potential to contribute to making a
better world.
There are always administrative details to take care
in the parish. You may remember that we will be one of
the many parishes participating in the diocesan campaign
known as “To Teach Who Christ Is”. We will begin this
campaign in the next couple months. There are many
needs in the parish but our recent parish survey indicated
a strong consensus to paint the church. It would be way
too expensive to paint the entire church so we are going to
focus on the sanctuary area. This will be our goal for the
campaign. We will be dedicating substantial resources to
this campaign in the near future.
La semana pasada tuve la oportunidad de reunirme con
cientos de sacerdotes de la asociación de sacerdotes católicos americanos en una conferencia anual en Rosemont,
IL. El propósito de la reunión fue el de rezar y discutir
los muchos asuntos cruciales en la iglesia católica en
America hoy en día. Uno de los más importantes fue la
violencia con armas que está destruyendo la cultura
americana. Veamos nuestra propia ciudad, donde la violencia con armas ha aumentando en años pasados. Se
pidió que los sacerdotes hagan un compromiso a no usar
violencia personal en esta violencia cultural. Discutimos
el significado de la no violencia en nuestra perspectiva
católica así como otras tradiciones. Al acoger colectivamente esta propuesta, reflexioné en las conocidas palabras
de Mahatma Gandhi: “Ustedes deben ser el cambio que desean que el mundo vea”. Gandhi puso en práctica esos principios de no violencia:
• La verdad es mi religión y la no violencia (amor) es su
única realización.
• Me comprometo a respetar a otros y la interconexión de
toda la vida.
• Prometo entender los “por qués” (el significado detrás
de esa conducta), por mí mismo y en otros.
• Buscaré ir más allá de la aceptación hacia la apreciación
y la celebración de las diferencias.
• Me comprometo a ser veraz y auténtico y de confrontar
la falsedad donde sea que la encuentre.
• Asumiré sin quejas cualquier sufrimiento que resulte de
mi confrontación con la falsedad. También aceptaré que
no se puede eliminar totalmente todas las formas de violencia.
• Prometo ayudar a que mi adversario a evitar sufrimiento
especialmente de nuestra confrontación.
• Más allá de las necesidades personales, me veo a mí
mismo como guardián de mis posesiones y talentos. Prometo usarlos para capacitor a otros y hacer cosas justas
para todos.
Podría considerar estos principios en la luz de las palabras
de Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy: “Ve y haz lo mismo”. Los
profetas modernos de hoy dicen que somos llamados a ser
embajadores de la paz y sanación en nuestros matrimonios,
familias, parroquias, barrios y la nación. No somos expectadores en esta vida. Tenemos un gran potencial para contribuir a hacer un mundo mejor.
Siempre hay detalles administrativos que atender en la
parroquia. Ustedes recordarán que seremos una de las
muchas parroquias participando en la campaña diocesana
conocida como “Enseñar Quién Es Cristo”. Comenzaremos
esta campaña en los próximos meses. Hay muchas necesidades en la parroquia pero según nuestra última encuesta
parroquial hay un fuerte consenso en pintar la iglesia. Sería
demasiado caro pintar la iglesia entera, así que nos concentraremos en el área del Santuario. Esta será nuestra meta
para la campaña. Estaremos dedicando recursos substanciales para esta campaña en un futuro cercano.

Emmaus Ministries works with men involved in survival
prostitution on the streets of Chicago. Stories from the
Streets was created by spending time with these men,
listening to their stories and interviewing them, then
crafting their words and experiences into monologues,
stories and songs
Bio: Al and Andy Tauber have been with Emmaus Ministries since 1999 and 2004, respectively. In addition to
the blessing of working at Emmaus, Andi teaches piano,
and Al teaches guitar, bass and drums. Both are involved
in the music group at Living Water Community Church.

An amazing exhibit, brought to us by Blessed Teresa of Calcutta’s religious order of
Sisters, the Missioners of Charity, has over 75 full color panels of her life story; from her
birth and her vocation story, to her serving the sick, poor, lonely, and vulnerable. Come and explore this
woman of God’s life and ministry as we prepare for her canonization in September, 2016. The exhibit is in
both English and Spanish, text and images and is appropriate for all ages.
We will also have with us a First Class Relic of Blessed Mother Teresa. Special Masses and services will be
held throughout the week, including a Mass with Bishop Joseph N. Perry on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 4 PM.
