My dear parishioners,
I love being a priest. The experiences I had the last
few weeks just reinforce that belief. When I was newly ordained and I would teach the schoolchildren, one question I
was frequently asked was “Father, if you weren’t a priest,
what would you be?” My response was usually “I would be
an English teacher or professor.’ Today when youth ask me
that question, my usual response is “There is nothing else I
would want to be.” I cannot imagine myself being anything
else. Being a priest is not something I do, being a priest is
what I am. Whether I am on vacation or hanging out with
friends or reading in my room, I am a priest. Being a priest
permeates my entire being, united to the One True High
Priest, Jesus Christ. I am still amazed after seventeen years
of priesthood, that the Lord called me. Not only has he called
me, he has entrusted to me the sacred mysteries of the faith.
Jesus allows me, as weak and as sinful as I am, to celebrate
the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, where bread and
wine truly become His Body and Blood. Jesus
allows me to forgive sins in His name in the
beautiful sacrament of confession, where I witness his healing power. Jesus allows me to baptize babies and adults into our great Catholic
faith, where sins are washed away and we are
made adopted children of the Most High. Jesus
allows me to anoint the sick where the True Physician brings healing, spiritual and, at times,
physical. Jesus allows me to witness to the Sacrament of Matrimony, where a man and a woman are united to
become one flesh.
The love poured out by Our Lord Jesus Christ is
amazing to me. St. Paul writes “But God shows his love for
us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for
us.” (Romans 5:8) That love continues in the Catholic
Church, in the sacraments and in the priesthood. God cares
enough about us that He gives us the sacraments to participate in His great love. He then chooses men, at different levels of ability and capability, to be stewards of His grace. I
know that I am limited in many ways, but the Lord, in His
infinite mercy, allows me to share in this life. I am humbled
by this love and this grace. Sometimes people will say to me,
“Father, you are a good priest,” but it is not me, it is Jesus
living in me and working through me. The more I am united
to Him, the more effective I can be, the more He can do
through me. The priesthood of Jesus Christ is a great gift to
the Church and to the world. Please join me in thanking God
for this great gift. Please join me in praying for priests and
for more good and holy vocations to the priesthood. Please
pray for all the priests who have served our parish throughout
the last 162 years. Please pray for good and holy priests.

Amo ser un sacerdote. Las experiencias que tuve
las últimas semanas reafirman esta creencia. ¿Cuándo recién fui ordenado yo les enseñaba a los niños de la escuela,
una pregunta que me hacían con frecuencia era “¿Padre, si
no fueras sacerdote, que serías?” Mi respuesta usualmente
fue, “Yo sería un maestro o profesor de inglés.” Ahora
cuando los jóvenes me hacen esa pregunta, mi respuesta
usual es “No hay nada más que yo quisiera ser.” No puedo
imaginarme ser otra cosa. Ser un sacerdote no es algo que
yo hago, ser un sacerdote es lo que soy. Ya sea cuando estoy de vacaciones o pasando el tiempo con mis amigos o
leyendo un libro en mi cuarto, yo soy un sacerdote. Ser un
sacerdote penetra todo mi ser, unido al Único y Verdadero
Altísimo Sacerdote, Jesucristo. Todavía estoy sorprendido
después de diecisiete años de sacerdocio, que el Señor me
llamó. No tan solo me ha llamado, él me ha encomendado los misterios sagrados de la fe. Jesús me
permite, así de débil y pecador que soy, a celebrar
el Sacrificio de la Santa Misa, donde el pan y vino
verdaderamente se convierte en su Cuerpo y Sangre. Jesús me permite perdonar pecados en Su
nombre en el hermoso sacramento de confesión,
donde soy testigo del poder sanador. Jesús me permite bautizar a bebes y adultos en nuestra gran fe
Católica, donde los pecados son borrados y nos
volvemos hijos adoptivos de Altísimo. Jesús me
permite ungir a los enfermos donde el verdadero doctor les
trae la sanación espiritual y en ocasiones físicamente. Jesús
me permite ser testigo del Sacramento de Matrimonio, donde un hombre y una mujer son unidos a ser un solo cuerpo.
El amor que derrama Nuestro Señor Jesucristo es maravilloso para mí. El Santo Pablo escribió “Mas
Dios muestra su amor para con nosotros, en que, siendo aún
pecadores, Cristo murió por nosotros.” (Romanos 5:8)
Aquel amor continua en la Iglesia Católica, en los sacramentos y en el sacerdocio. A Dios le importamos tanto que
Él nos da los sacramentos para participar en su grande
amor. El después elige a hombres, en diferentes niveles de
habilidad y capacidad, para ser administradores de Su gracia. Yo sé que soy limitado en ciertas maneras, pero el Señor, en su Infinita misericordia, me permite compartir en
esta vida. Soy humilde a su amor y su gracia. A veces hay
gente que me dice, Padre, eres un buen sacerdote,” pero no
soy yo, es Jesús viviendo en mí y trabajando dentro de mí.
Entre más unido estoy a él, lo más eficaz puedo ser, y más
puede hacer dentro de mí. El sacerdocio de Jesucristo es un
gran regalo a la Iglesia y para el mundo. Por favor a acompáñenos a darle gracias a Dios por este gran regalo. Por
favor acompáñenme a orar por los sacerdotes y por más
vocaciones buenos y santos al sacerdocio. Por favor oren
por todos los sacerdotes que han servido a nuestra parroquia
por los últimos 162 años. Por favor oren por sacerdotes
bueno y santos.

230 families! Because we have gone over our goal, we will now receive 100% of every dollar raised over our $410,000 target! We want

to our campaign and for those of you who are praying for Generations

pledge form off at the Parish Office. Our commitments to date are a
wonderful testament of the generosity and faithfulness of our parish

Divino Niño Celebration
On Sunday July 17th the parish will celebrate the feast of the
Divino Niño (a great Colombian celebration)! After the 12
Noon Mass in Spanish, we will have a procession around the
parish, food, music, dancing, entertainment and more. Come
honor the infancy of our Blessed Lord and ask Him for continued blessings on your home!
Did you know?
In 1853, Long Island was separated from the
Archdiocese of New York. The new area, which
comprised the whole of Long Island was named the
Diocese of Brooklyn by Pope Pius IX; Bishop John
Loughlin was consecrated the first bishop of the new
diocese. The following year, Bishop purchased three
lots in Winfield for one dollar. Shortly after, St. Mary’s
Parish was established.
Annual Walking Pilgrimage
Walking Pilgrimage and retreat: From August 8‐11 we will
participate in a 4‐day walking pilgrimage from Great Meadows,
NJ to Our Lady of Czestahowa Shrine in Doylestown, PA. Four
days of walking, singing, camping, praising the Lord and growing
closer to Him with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. For
more information contact Father Evans at the rectory.
Bus Pilgrimage to the Holy Doors
As Pope Francis has declared this the year of Mercy,
Brooklyn has established Holy Doors at six churches throughout the diocese. You have read in the Tablet and Nuestra Voz
that other parishes have visited one or some of the Holy Doors.
Now is your chance to visit all six in one day. The comfortable
coach bus will depart the parish on Saturday July 23rd @
6:30AM and return at approximately 9 PM. The bus ticket cost
is $40 for adults and $20 for youths 6 -16 and free for children
5 or younger accompanied by an adult or older sibling. Bus
tickets are on sale at the rectory starting Sunday.
Flower Baskets
Would you like to keep our altar beautiful
during the summer? How about donating a
flower basket for the week? Each basket is
$75 and can be donated in memory of a
loved one or given in thanksgiving. Donations received by Monday of each week
will have the memorial mentioned in the bulletin.

Sr. Mary Conroy’s Food Pantry and Outreach
is sponsoring a raffle for JetBlue tickets to anywhere
JetBlue flies: almost 100 domestic and international
destinations! Two sets of a pair of tickets (4 in total)
will be raffled on Monday, September 19th after the
12Noon Mass. Raffle chances go on sale at the rectory
this weekend for $20/chance. Don’t miss this

Catholic Charities Senior Housing Opportunity
Catholic Charities is pleased to announce that beginning July 18,
2016, the Pierrepont House for the Elderly, a 188-unit building in
Brooklyn Heights, will re-open its waiting list. To enter the lottery,
applicants (or their spouse) must be 62 years or older with limited
income and meet HUD Section 8 income guidelines. Non-elderly
persons with disabilities may also qualify.
