Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Our Scriptures this weekend convey
the beautiful imagery of the Shepherd.
Jesus is with us always as our faithful
shepherd. He will not abandon us.
The Church uses the term ‘shepherd’
in reference to those who serves us in a
significant way as our leaders beginning with Pope Francis. Pope Francis has wonderfully
identified himself with the ‘sheep’ which we know is a
metaphor for all people.
There are messages in the Scriptures for each of us
personally as well as a faith community. In the Gospel,
Jesus invites his disciples to “Come to a deserted place
all by yourselves and rest a while.” No doubt, Jesus and
his disciples were often weary from traveling and speaking with the people. The time was short-lived as the
people followed them to the other side. Here then we see
the compassionate and magnanimous heart of Jesus, the
Good Shepherd.
The reflections above provide the context for looking
at our own lives. Many of us are caught up in a hectic
way of life. We are in fact ‘pulled in many directions.’
We often long for some restful times. Some years ago I
read a wonderful article by Edward Hays entitled “Siesta
Spirituality.” I saved the article because it really spoke
to my heart. Jesus’ call to ‘come to a deserted place all
by yourselves and rest awhile’ is very much connected
with the message in the article.
Here are a few highlights. Taking a brief nap may be
considered beneficial to some while others feel guilty for
doing so. Edward Hays sees this resting time as prayer
and calls it The Prayer of Napping. He says “The Prayer
of Napping is a sign of the ability to ‘let go’ of running
every aspect of our lives. It is an act of trust to allow the
Divine Mystery to take over in the midst of troubles and
deadlines.” Sleep and napping allow us to rest in God.
While we are resting, we are healed and renewed to
participate in his mission.

Thank You to everyone who shared in my vow
celebration this past June 30th. It was a wonderful,
affirming and faith-filled experience for me! I am
overwhelmed at the support, care, and all of the help
that went into the celebration. Thank you to those
who had a part in the set- up, the food preparations
and those who brought food. My family and A New
Genesis Community felt such a great spirit of hospitality from our parish. I am so grateful to be a part of
the St. Philip Faith Community.

A New Genesis Community would like to sincerely
thank the Community of St. Philip Parish for your
hospitality, welcome and generosity on the evening
of Sister Mary Peter’s Vow night. Thank you to
Sister Jane and especially to the Altar Society,
Intergenerational Faith Formation, the Staff and to
all who helped to make that night such a special
time held in much care and love, and an evening we
hold special in our memories! Thank you, we are
grateful and hold you in our care and prayer.

Dear Sr. Jane and Members of St. Philip Parish:
As you know, this year has been designated by Pope
Francis as the Year of Consecrated Life. During this
year, the Holy Father has called religious sisters, priests,
& brothers to a spirit of renewal, & he has invited the
entire church to a sense of gratitude for the life & service
of religious men and women.
We are writing today to thank you, because you & the
parishioners who went before you, prayed for &
nourished the religious vocation that we are able to live
today. When we were growing up, the example &
prayers of this parish helped us to hear & respond to
God’s call to serve Him in religious life.
There were a number of vocations that came from our
parish. We also know that there were men & women
who joined other religious communities & entered
diocesan priesthood as well.
As we continue to celebrate this year & in years to
come, know how grateful we are for your support &
prayer for vocations. We’ll continue to pray for you, our
home parishioners, especially during this year of
consecrated life.

Mensaje de Nuestra Líder Pastoral
Estimados hermanos y hermanas,
Nuestras escrituras este fin de
semana transmiten las bellas
imágenes del Pastor. Jesús está con
nosotros siempre como nuestro fiel
pastor. Él no nos abandonará. La
Iglesia utiliza el término 'Pastor' en
referencia a aquellos que nos sirven de manera
significativa como nuestros líderes, comenzando
con el Papa Francisco. El Papa Francisco
maravillosamente se ha identificado con las 'ovejas'
que sabemos que es una metáfora de todas las
personas.
Hay mensajes en las Escrituras para cada uno de
nosotros personalmente al igual que como una
comunidad de fe. En el Evangelio, Jesús invita a
sus discípulos, "Vamos aparte a un lugar tranquilo
para descansar un poco.” Sin duda, Jesús y sus
discípulos a menudo se sentían cansados de viajar y
hablar con la gente. El tiempo solos fue breve ya
que el pueblo los siguió hasta el otro lado. He aquí
donde vemos el corazón magnánimo y compasivo
de Jesús, el Buen Pastor.
Las reflexiones anteriores proveen el contexto
para ver nuestras propias vidas. Muchos de
nosotros estamos atrapados en un estilo de vida
frenético. De hecho sentimos como si nos
“estiraran en muchas direcciones." Frecuentemente
anhelamos momentos de descanso. Hace algunos
años leí un artículo maravilloso de Edward Hays
titulado «Espiritualidad Siesta.» Guardé el artículo
porque realmente me llegó al corazón. El llamado
de Jesús de “vamos aparte a un lugar tranquilo para
descansar un poco” está muy relacionado con el
mensaje del artículo.
Aquí tienen algo de lo que más destacó. Tomar
una breve siesta puede ser considerado beneficioso
por algunos mientras que otros se sienten culpables
de hacerlo. Edward Hayes ve este tiempo de
descanso como una oración y le llama La Oración
de la Siesta. Dice, "La oración de la Siesta es señal
de la capacidad de 'dejar ir' de efectuar todos los
aspectos de nuestras vidas. Es un acto de confianza
permitir que el Misterio Divino asuma el control
entre apuros y plazos." El sueño y las siestas nos
permiten descansar en Dios. Mientras descansamos,
somos sanados y renovados para participar en su
misión.
¡Que la paz de Dios habite en sus corazones!
