Facelifts on
West Vernor
Like every year around this time, we are
eager for the spring season to start bringing its
warm temperatures and blooming trees to our
homes and neighborhoods. But this year, look
beyond the weather changes to see new visual
changes to our W. Vernor & Springwells and
Mexicantown Business Districts. The investments will transform Southwest Detroit to an
area even more attractive for our residents, visitors and shoppers.
A facade matching grant was awarded to the
owners of Honey Bee Market to renovate the
façade of their original building, which began
operations in 1956. The improvements include an
eye-catching metal/wrought iron sign, a new clay
roof tile over the windows on the east side of the
structure and new colors and light fixtures which
will transform the building and create a more
pedestrian friendly commercial district. Façade
matching grants were also awarded to the owners
of Hacienda Mexican Foods and LA
Insurance buildings. Hacienda Mexican Foods
will have a new entrance, including large new
windows that will allow a better view of the
improved retail area of the business. New canvas
awnings and exterior light fixtures, as well as
new allowed decorative wrought iron security
screens will be installed as part of the renovation
work. In the case of LA Insurance, the new brick,
sign, windows and exterior architectural cornice
will enhance the design and visual appeal of the
building, and the removal of the extra signage

Program. The program helps business and property owners restore their storefronts by providing
grants for architectural services and reimbursement for up to 50% of construction costs. Façade
improvements include updates such as new signage, lighting, and awnings, but can also completely rebuild storefronts. The program uses specific design standards to ensure appropriate
urban design is reinforced. The program was
designed to create a more attractive, pedestrian
friendly and safe commercial main street that

Celebrating Children and Literacy
Día de Los Niños–Día de los Libros
The Mexican Consulate
in Detroit, in partnership
with Vistas Nuevas Head
Start is celebrating the sixth
annual “Celebrate Children
and Literacy” event on
Saturday, April 28, 2012
from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at
Clark Park located on
Vernor and Clark in Southwest Detroit .
In Mexico, this special
day takes place on April 30
of each year. Known as Día
de Los Niños, this day celebrates children, encouraging
traditional, cultural activities, where children learn
about their heritage, the
importance of education and
the spirit of community.
But mostly it is about fun
and family.
In the United States,
April is celebrated as the
Month of the Young Child.
This is an opportunity to
understand the needs of
young children as well as
provide opportunities for
young children to learn and
explore their world in a fun
and positive manner. Vistas
Nuevas Head Start provides
services to over 1400 children in SW Detroit concentrating on early childhood
issues, while supporting the
needs of families. As a
provider of early childhood
education, Vistas Nuevas
understands that children
will succeed with help, support and encouragement
from their families. In order
to assist families, SW community partners provide
support services and continued care as children grow
physically, educationally
and spiritually.
The focus of this event is
to promote literacy within
the family, celebrate the culture of Mexico and the children of the SW community.
It is truly a family event,
everyone is welcome to
attend and all activities are
free. Community organizations and individuals have
been remarkable in their
quick response to participate

Día de Los Niños–Día de los Libros
El Consulado de México en Detroit, en colaboración con
Vistas Nuevas Head Start celebra la sexta edición del evento “Celebrando los Niños y la Alfabetización” el sábado 28
de abril de 2012, de 10:00 am a 3:00 pm en Clark Park,
situado en la W. Vernor y la Clark.
En México, este día tan especial se lleva a cabo el 30 de
abril de cada año. Conocido como el Día de los Niños, el día
de hoy celebra a los niños, fomentando las actividades tradicionales, culturales, donde los niños aprenden acerca de su
herencia, la importancia de la educación y el espíritu de
comunidad. Pero sobre todo se trata de diversión y de la
familia.
En los Estados Unidos, en abril se celebra como el Mes
del Niño Pequeño. Esta es una oportunidad para entender
las necesidades de los niños pequeños, así como proporcionar oportunidades para que los niños pequeños aprender
y explorar su mundo de una manera divertida y positiva.
Vistas Nuevas Head Start provee servicios a más de 1400
niños en Detroit SW se concentran en los temas de la
primera infancia, mientras que el apoyo a las necesidades
de las familias. Como proveedor de la educación infantil,
Vistas Nuevas entiende que los niños tendrán éxito con la
ayuda, apoyo y aliento de sus familias. Con el fin de ayudar

The Center of Music and Performing Arts- Southwest
(COMPÁS) began servicing the community in 2007 as a
program of the SDBA. In its fifth year of operation,
COMPÁS is making changes to better serve its clients
and the surrounding community. Organizers are reviewing class offerings, and class schedules to propel
COMPÁS forward, and in April, organizers will also be
announcing the new Director of the Program.

West Vernor &
Springwells Business
Improvement District
(BID) has contracted with
the City of Detroit Police
Department’s Secondary
Employment Program to
walk and bike the business
district. The officers are
here to address quality of
life issues that residents
and business owners have
been concerned about – loitering, panhandling and
public drinking. Officers

The GREEN is a pilot
effort by the BID to landscape the berms, in particular the side street entryways into the business district. Three locations were

Treatment for this can
include relaxation exercises
or even a bite splint that
can be used to relieve this
harmful process that can
wear away the tooths enamel cover.
Other causes can be
from exposed root surfaces
possibly from receding gums
due to gum disease (peri-
odontitis) or brushing
wrong. For this, stop the use
of whitening or tartar control toothpastes because
they are abrasive and some
contain phosphates, instead
start using a desensitizing
toothpaste; also stop using
hard or medium toothbrushes because they are irritating to the gum tissue and
wear away the root surface.
Only use a soft bristled
brush. They work best
because they can flex
around and in-between the
teeth. Also don’t brush
across the outer rounded
surfaces of the teeth, but
only lengthwise along with
the shape of the teeth,
preferably starting at the
gum with downward strokes
for the upper teeth and
upward strokes for the
lower.
A final cause can be a
new restoration (filling or
crown) in the area. For this
case, uneven bite or a high
restoration or recent injury
will require a dentist’s evaluation and possible balancing or evening of the bite.
In any case if the problem persists visit your dentist for an evaluation and
possible desensitizing treatment.
