Working Families for Transportation Jobs
With the Partnership
for Diversity and
Opportunity in
Transportation (PDOT),
SDBA has been working
for the past two and a
half years to get Detroit
residents and Detroit
based contractors into the
pipeline for transporta-
tion work scheduled in
SW Detroit. SDBA is
focused on host community contractor recruitment
and preparation to secure

COMPÁS Kicks Off Its
Summer Season
COMPÁS(an initiative of the SDBA) has
kicked off its summer
season with some fabulous performances at the
7th Annual Dia de los
Niños/Dia de los Libros
literacy fair on April
27th. The event, organized by Matrix Human
Services-Vistas Nuevas
Head Start, featured
COMPÁS dance instructor Lisa Ouelette and her
tap and belly dance classes. We also collaborated
with the Michigan State
University Community
Music School to present Bridges to Choro,
a Brazilian influenced
ensemble from East
Lansing. On May 25th
the Center’s annual end
of the year recital was
held where all of our
students got to showcase
their talents. What great
things our next generation of performers has in
store!
We have an exciting
summer in store with
many new opportunities to experience arts
road construction contract
work.
The Partnership, supported by MDOT, meets
monthly at FocusHOPE,
and includes over 50 separate organizations from
the community, labor, the
construction industry,
government, nonprofits,
employment and training
entities, and trade associations.
PDOT’s first success
came with the bidding
of the Southfield Fwy
project with the prime
contractor committing to
engaging with the community surrounding the
freeway project. The contractor undertook worker
recruitment in adjacent
zip codes, encouraged
contractors and workers
onsite to use local businesses, and addressed
issues of noise, vibration,
air quality and business
disruption.
MDOT, SDBA and
the city of Detroit are
now prepping the bidding
of streetscape improvements on W. Vernor
from Woodmere to Clark,
which includes all new
lighting. The project will
be a pilot to maximize the
participation of host community (defined for SDBA
as the city of Detroit)
contractors and workers. SDBA is working
with the Skillman funded
Congress of Communities
to reach residents in SW
Detroit to insure they are
informed of eligibility,
training and application
opportunities for MDOT
construction jobs. For

are doing much more
than that.
Scientists believe
that gum disease may
be linked to over 200
other diseases, including
life-threatening ones. So
we have a much better
understanding of how
important oral hygiene is
to overall health.
Cancer: Breast,
mouth, throat, kidney,
pancreatic, and brain cancers have all been linked
to gum disease.
Heart Disease: Gum
disease has been shown
to increase instances of
heart attack and stroke.
Diabetes: Insulin sensitivity can be affected
by gum disease and lead
to unhealthy blood sugar
levels.
Lung Disease: Plaque
bacteria may cause infections or aggravate pre-
existing conditions.
For many years, it
was believed that bacteria
was the only factor that
linked periodontal disease
to other infections, but
more recent studies also
suggest that gum inflammation may be linked to
chronic inflammatory conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis,
and Alzheimer’s.
If there is a family
history of an inflammatory condition, or you have
been diagnosed with one,
it’s important to consult
with both, a physician
and your dentist to manage your overall health.

Scholarships
The Women’s Cultural Collaborative through the
funding entity for SWEEP (Southwest Detroit Women’s
Educational Empowerment Program), intends to increase
the educational possibilities for women of all cultures and
ages living and working in SW Detroit. SWEEP and WCC
were initiated by Religious of the Sacred Heart.
Madonna University will be holding classes in your
­neighborhood at 5716 Michigan Ave. Scholarships are
available as well to attend other institutions of higher
education in the Detroit area to cover costs for tuition and
books.

Workers’ Compensation and
Medical Benefits
When an individual is injured
in the course of employment, the
employer or its insurance carrier is
required to provide the individual
with “reasonable and necessary medical benefits.” That includes services
ranging from transportation expenses
to surgery and almost everything in
between.
The employer has the right to control the provision of medical care for
the first ten days after injury. After
that the injured worker can treat with
a doctor of his/her choice. The injured
worker has an absolute right to select
their own treating physician after ten
days without being required to provide any justification for that choice.
Often, a medical case manager
is employed to assist and monitor
medical care provided to an injured
worker. However, many times case
managers over step their bounds and
infringe on the rights of injured workers. Some give advice to injured workers which is inaccurate, telling the
worker they have certain responsibilities which are not true. Often they
will try and attend medical examinations and actually be in the examination room when the injured worker is
meeting with the treating physician.
An injured worker is not required to
allow a case manager in the examination room.

you have questions about your rights
to medical benefits or any related services out of the Michigan’s Workers’
Compensation Act, contact your local
lawyer and ask for his advice.
