La carrera es un oportunidad para que corra a través de los

to wear the traditional costumes of the Day of the
Dead, and to wear ribbons
in honor of deceased loved
ones. The course winds
through Holy Cross and
Woodmere Cemeteries.
Start/Finish: Both races
begin at Patton Park, located at 2301 Woodmere St

pick-up will be open the
week before the event.
Course Maps: Maps for both
the 10k and 5K will be emailed
to registered runners by October

Dead! Patton Park Recreation

The SDBA Small Façade
Improvement Grant Program
funded by JP Morgan CHASE
helps business and property
owners repair their storefronts
with mini-grants for up to $2,000
(per mailing address). Small
façade improvements include
new signage, lighting, painting,
awnings, window displays and
window and door replacements.
The Small Façade Improvement
Grant Program was implemented in 2010 as part of The SDBA’s
Raise the Bar Pilot Program,
which was designed to address
code and blight violations while
increasing the design and visual
standards throughout the commercial district. The program
uses specific design standards to
ensure appropriate urban design
is reinforced. To date this program has generated a total of
$50,000 in blight removal.
This year our goal is to assist
10 business and/or property owners in Southwest Detroit with
the improvements of their storefronts. If you are interested in

Paving the Way / Sentando las Bases
Southwest Detroit expects billions of dollars in transportation investment in the next several years with the
I-94 project, the Detroit Intermodal Freight Terminal
(DIFT) improvements and the public bridge construction
known as the New International Trade Crossing (NITC).
The Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA)
wants to ensure that local contractors are prepared to
make successful bids for these projects.
To prepare contractors, the Michigan Department of
Transportation (MDOT), U.S. Department of
Transportation (U.S.DOT), and SDBA have partnered to
bring the U.S.DOT Bonding and Access to Capital
Education Program (BACEP) to the State of Michigan,
with a pilot project in Southeast Michigan.
The BACEP, a free service, will consist of two parts.
The first part will be an education and training phase
with workshops tailored for businesses competing for
transportation-related contracts. One-on-one sessions
with local surety bonding professionals and loan officers
will assist participating small businesses in compiling
the required materials for a bond or financing application. The second part will include mentoring and supportive services for participating small businesses to
assist them with cost estimating, preparing successful
and competitive bids, completing paperwork, making
contacts with prime contractors, and more. Through

Aaron Barndollar as Director of the Center of Music and Performing Arts

For the past six years,
Aaron Barndollar has
served as the Humanities
Programming
Coordinator for the Arab
American National
Museum.
“The growth of a
healthy Southwest
Detroit Community is an
important mission of
mine, and I have always
been connected to the
neighborhood,” says
Barndollar. “Throughout
my career I have aided
various endeavors to
increase opportunities for
youth and encourage positive community growth.”
An educator, arts
advocate, artist and historian, Barndollar’s community involvement is vast.
He is a member of the
Kresge Arts in Detroit
Advisory Council;
Community for Latino
Artists, Visionaries and
Educators (CLAVE);
Friends of the Center for

many others. Barndollar
also has 16 years experience as a professional

Governor Rick Snyder honored the Southwest
Detroit Business Association, and the Southwest
Detroit business community as the honorary chair
of the organization’s COMMUNITY INVESTMENT
BREAKFAST.
Held this year at James Group International on
W. Fort St. and Clark, the event was sponsored by

An issue that is important to
parents in these difficult economic times
is the payment of child support. Most
payors of support feel that they pay too
much while the parents who receive the
support feel that it is too little. The law
attempts to set a fair amount based
upon the needs of the child and the
actual resources of each parent.
Under the law. the fair amount of
child support is determined through the
use of a mathematical formula taking
into account the incomes of both parents
and the number of children needing
support. Once this number is determined, the court will use it unless it
creates a result that is “unjust or inappropriate” in a particular case. It is
rare that the court will deviate from the
child support formula. However, some
examples where deviation may occur
would be where the child has special
needs, one parent is a minor, or the
parties have extraordinary high joint
debts or medical expenses.
If you feel your support should be
changed, an attorney should be able to
tell you what amount would be paid
under the child support formula. Then,
you could decide if you should petition
the court for a modification of the
amount paid.

This year’s focus was On the Road to Economic
Growth. Huel Perkins, of Fox 2 News, was the fine
Master of Ceremonies, introducing the Governor as
the special guest speaker. The New International
Trade Crossing(NITC) was on everyone’s mind.
Snyder promised that the cost for construction of the
publicly owned bridge between the U.S. and Windsor,
Ontario, Canada, would be borne by the government
of Canada, and that our neighbor to the north(actually
south from Detroit)has also committed to cover construction costs not met by toll collections with
Canadian funds.
After the Governor concluded his remarks, Perkins
deftly handled questions from the audience. Local
business applauded the new bridge investment, and
agreed that growing trade demand requires more
capacity. Michigan’s CEO indicated that it is the
entrepreneurial spirit and tenacity of immigrant
entrepreneurs that is a key indicator of the state’s
successful economic future. The investment is projected to create 10,000 jobs. The Southwest Detroit
Business Association is working to insure that host
community contractors and residents get into the
pipeline to benefit from those jobs.

Coalition members attended, and have been working
with the Michigan Department of
Transportation(MDOT) and the Governor’s Office, in
both Granholm and Snyder’s administrations. They
are working to guarantee that residents and the community most impacted by the construction of the
bridge and bridge plaza, are fairly treated and the
community is given every chance for rebirth.
