Neighbor Day, Celebrating Neighbors in the NWS
Día del vecino, celebrando los vecinos del NWS
On the afternoon of May 9, you may have noticed a group of youth biking around the
neighborhood in colorful bikes, one in particular hauling a child carrier with a sign
reading ICE CREAM SALE. On that same afternoon you may have also spotted a group
walking around handing colorful notes. What was that all about?

The NWSI was recently inspired by the website GOOD.is to celebrate Neighbor Day.
Basically this means taking the time, a few hours, a day or a weekend, to really focus
on interacting with our neighbors. We often don’t take the time to get to know who
lives next door to us, for a myriad of reasons, causing us to underestimate the value
of these relationships. Neighbors are great and can help build a stronger community,
so that is why we created our very own Neighbor Day in the Near Westside.
One way we instigated neighborly interaction was by having a mobile ice cream sale
on bikes. Ice cream sandwiches and popsicles were sold for 25 cents but the catch
was that you couldn’t buy one for yourself, instead you had to get one for a neighbor
or friend. The price was so low
that people usually ended up
getting more than one sandwich
or popsicle, and sharing them with
friends or family. By the end of our
two hour bike ride, which went
through Gifford, Oswego, Grace,
Merriman, Shonnard, Otisco, and

you to the newly renovated Mundy Branch
Library!! If you haven’t yet visited it please
do, you will be so happy you did.

First a little history about Mundy Library.
To quote from their webpage: “Mundy
Branch was named after Ezekiel Wilson
Mundy, city librarian from 1880 until his
retirement in 1916. It opened its doors in
1917 as a station in Salt City Store at 401
S. Geddes Street. Its location changed
three times before settling into its present
home at 1204 S. Geddes Street in 1988.” I
occasionally visited Mundy when it was at
the 1101 S. Geddes St. storefront, before
it landed at its present location. Mundy is
my library of choice, I go there more often
than any other. Mundy is the newest branch of the city libraries, and now it is even
newer! It serves the Westside, Southwest and Strathmore neighborhoods and their
schools: Bellevue, Blodgett, Delaware,
Roberts, Seymour, Most Holy Rosary,
Shea and Fowler.

Over the years Mundy has become a
community gathering space. They host
neighborhood meetings, afterschool
programming, Tails to Tell read-aloud
to live dogs, mancala tournaments, and
a variety of other social events. It had
become a go-to place, but there were
problems. Lately libraries have become
more a living space than a repository for
books.

Janet Park, Branch Manager, realized
that Mundy was woefully ill-equipped
to handle the increasing daily need
for technology in the library and
neighborhood. In order to adapt to
the need the library required physical
changes to their existing structure. So
Janet went to work. She met with other
agencies serving the neighborhood,
they developed a strategic plan, money
was raised. They acquired: $100,000 in
county bonds, a $40,000 grant from the
Allyn Foundation, the $150,000 from
Skunk City’s Harbor Brook mitigation
funds, $12,751 from an existing grant,
and $125,363 in state construction grant
money. A design consultant was brought
on board; she observed patron usage
and met with the staff. Janet researched
library renovations throughout the
United States. A fresh, new approach is
the result of all this hard work.

When you walk in the first thing that
pops is the vibrant, bright colors
throughout. The book shelves are lower
and you can see throughout the whole
facility. There is a quiet room where
one can go with their own computer
and take advantage of the library’s wi-fi.
There are designated teen and children
areas which look very inviting. And
there is a quiet adult area where you
can sit in comfortable chairs and read
the newspapers or magazines available
nearby. Yes, there are fewer books
now, but remember ~~ you can request
whatever book you want from libraries
all over, not just the county but the state
and beyond! So all the books you would

Meanwhile the other half of our crew
walked around the neighborhood handing
out colorful notes, inviting residents to
interact with neighbors. The notes read,
This weekend in the Near Westside we are
celebrating neighbors! So why not…, what
followed were hand-written suggestions
by our Youth Leadership Team for how to
interact with ones neighbors, for example:
Play Dominoes, Hug Someone, Invite your
neighbors to a BBQ, Offer to help a neighbor
with something, to name a few.

Both activities were run with the help of

able to guide people on how to best fix their
issue.

All of these were simple actions, nonetheless
we are confident they had an impact based
on people’s positive reactions to the notes

eating ice cream. We hope to celebrate our
neighbors more in the coming months, will

In August of 2013, I was given the privilege of being hired as the Near West Side
Community Organizer for the Near West Side Initiative thanks to a generous grant
from Say Yes to Education. From the moment I read the job description, I knew
the job was for me. I would have the opportunity to work closely with the people,
businesses and most importantly the schools in the neighborhood. My entire
professional career has been dedicated to social/human service and public education
in urban settings. The position of Community Organizer allowed me to do it all at
once and I dove in head first.
En agosto de 2013, tuve el privilegio de ser contratado como el organizador
comunitario del Near West Side para Near West Side Initiative gracias a una generosa
donación de Dile sí a la Educación. Desde el momento en que leí la descripción

The timing couldn’t have been better since school was getting ready to start
and I had established relationships with neighborhood school administrators
prior to beginning my work. I was able to convince them all in the value of doing
neighborhood tours with their mostly new school staff to see not only how
beautiful the people and
community are but also
how many great assets
we have right in our back
yard. I cannot tell you how
many teachers’ jaws we
had to pick up off the floor
because of previously
held stereotypes which
they found to be untrue.
Teachers who worked
in the neighborhood for
decades were totally
unaware of the vast
educational and cultural
resources right outside
their schools’ doorsteps.
And the sparks of
innovation and creativity
that were initiated by the
tours are what spawned
many of the great
programs and initiatives
we’ve launched since
then. It really does not
matter how educated or
passionate you are as an
educator – you will never
truly connect with your
students if you do not
know where they come
from prior to stepping
into your classroom. This
is referred to as cultural
relevancy and in my first
few weeks, we closed a
historically wide gap that
will only continue to get
closed further.

Simultaneously, we were conducting a huge neighborhood-wide survey that was
extremely beneficial to me because I was able to know what made the neighborhood
and the residents tick, what they knew of and didn’t know of and how we could
better serve the community. What came from that was the #TURNUPCUSETOWN
Youth Summit at Fowler High School, the NWS Game Night at Blodgett, and the
NWS Lights Up! Christmas decorating contest. We also realized our neighborhood
teachers are a powerful resource to the residents of the community so we wanted to
show them appreciation through teacher appreciation nights. We realized the youth
have little to engage with and take ownership in within the neighborhood so we
developed the youth leadership team.

fue muy beneficioso para mí porque yo era capaz de saber lo que quería el barrio

Not everything worked out and was successful and that’s okay because this whole
process is about trial and error, failing and learning from our mistakes. What I took
away from all of this was that the Near West Side is filled with rich and proud people
who do care about their community. We are fully aware of the drugs and violence
that riddle our neighborhood but the tide is turning – those engaged in negative
behaviors will not rule the neighborhood for much longer…people are fed up and
ready to stand up. And the Near West Side Initiative is ready to stand with all of you.

What will truly turn the neighborhood around
is one thing – education. It seems simple but it
really isn’t. Education in terms of what your rights
are as a citizen of Syracuse and a member of the
Near West Side Community. Education in terms of
supporting your children’s educational needs while
they’re in school. Education in terms of what are
you doing as an adult to further your education.
All of these elements of education is what opens
doors for jobs and social mobility. I get it…most
of the residents have had bad experiences with
education in Syracuse and/or the neighborhood. But
it really is our only way out of the cycle of poverty.
So the challenge for the future is really posed as a
question…how can we help you help yourself? How
can the Near West Side Initiative use our influences
in the city to support your needs to uplift your
family and your community?

home-grown Westsider who went through Seymour,

and come back to replace me as the Community
Organizer. She is the poster-child of what we want
to create…more people like Ashley who grew up
in the neighborhood and are now giving back to
contribute towards making the neighborhood better
than when they were growing up. That’s what it’s
all about. See I grew up in a “hood” so I know how
inner city neighborhoods work but I didn’t grow
up in the Near West Side so it is only right that the
person who is doing the work to make it better be in
the hands of someone who has grown up in it. So I want to thank you all for allowing
me to serve the needs of the people, businesses and schools of the Near West Side
and I believe I’ve done my part – I’ve gotten things off the ground to hand them off
to the person (and people) it all belongs to – Near Westsiders. It’s your neighborhood
and it’s beautiful in so many ways so own it, appreciate it, and make it flourish.

Some of the project objectives were: to increase public access to the latest
computer and digital technology; create a defined space for teens that is both
welcoming and on target with their needs; to provide a physical space that is
conducive to both group and individual computer use and instruction to enhance
the computer literacy skills of library patrons; and increase community use of library
services, materials and equipment by reconfiguring library space without increasing
staffing levels. I do believe they have accomplished these objectives. They were
closed for three months and miracles were performed!

Readiness and Academic Support Programs

While some of University College’s programs help individuals advance their career
by helping them complete an undergraduate or graduate degree program, the
Talent and Education Development Center (TEDCenter) can help build skills to earn
industry-recognized certificates employers are looking for. The TEDCenter programs
are focused on the workforce skills of today and tomorrow.
Known for its College Readiness Evaluation and Work Readiness Programs, the
TEDCenter offers self-paced, online programs that can help determine if you are
ready for college or if you have the skill level necessary for employment. Individuals
who are concerned that their basic reading, math, and teamwork skills are not at the
level they need to be successful, can set skill development goals and learn the tools
they need through the College Readiness Evaluation and Work Readiness programs.
Both programs begin with a one-on-one consultation with a certified trainer to help
guide you. The program is self-paced and measures your progress while increasing
your confidence as you reach your goals. Participants in these programs may qualify
to take the Syracuse University Certificate of Workplace Competency test; giving
successful participants a recognized certificate to attach to their resumes.

The Center offers Social Media programs to help small businesses build their
reputation in the market, and Excel programs to build the skills businesses are
asking for. Some of these programs can be completed online and at an individual
pace providing students with the flexibility necessary to balance work, family,
and personal development. The TEDCenter works with CNYWorks and the U.S
Department of Veterans Affairs to determine which programs meet the eligibility

The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) is a special
admission program that provides a broad range of services to New York State
residents whose financial and educational backgrounds prohibit them from regular
admission to Syracuse University. HEOP assists students with support services and
financial aid to guide them toward successful completion of their college degree.
University College’s HEOP is the only HEOP program New York State serving parttime students. To see if you qualify, contact the University College HEOP office at
