La primera fase del Proyecto Skiddy Park está actualmente en curso,

Nestled in a mansion here on the Near
Westside (yes, we have mansions over
here!!) there is a place to get away from it
all, a hidden treasure. The Spa is located
in an 1880’s Victorian mansion which has
been lovingly restored and still has many
of the original architectural details. When
I was there interviewing Ed Griffin-Nolan
I took some time to look around and
appreciate the stained glass windows, the
beautiful wood floors, the detailed oak
woodwork, the fireplaces and mantels and
the grand sweeping staircase. Ed told me
that before he was there it was Meech
Funeral Home, which I am sure many of you
might remember. And before that it was a
private home owned by a George Barnes;
he and his wife had four children and 20
servants!

The Art of Massage is the name of Ed’s business which originally began in 1997
on Parkway Drive. They were also located for many years in Marshall Square up in
the University area. When Ed wanted to add another location, the Near Westside
was a natural place for him to look, he has been a neighbor of ours for years on
Parkway Drive. He bought it in 2007 and now this is his only location. He and his
wife, Ellen Hoffara, along with partner,
Tim, and son, Dan, did the restoration
and renovation. Ed credits his wife for
having “the eye” and indeed she does;
she also has many lovely paintings
throughout the space.

Besides the work on the inside,
there has been a lot of work on the
environment surrounding the building.
Ed explained to me that they believe
in healing the whole and that would
include healing the earth. Working
with Onondaga County’s Save the Rain
Program these are the things they
have accomplished: they tore up the
parking area and repaved it in such
a way that the rain will now run into
the five gardens they planted: planted
40 cedar trees and seven deciduous
trees in three depressed rain gardens
and two flat rain gardens. Now 80%
of the rain that runs off the building
will be saved from entering into the
city’s sewer system. Also they planted
a green roof with 1,000 sedum plants
which are highly absorbing, this is on
the yoga room in the back.

The Spa at 500 is called “Your place to
relax, restore, renew. They offer a full menu of services such as: Swedish massage,
medial massage, sports & orthopedic massage, pregnancy and maternity massage
and hot stone massage. Their hours of operation are Monday – Saturday, 10 a.m.
To 7 p.m. Or by appointment. To reach them you can call 315-475-9164. The
address is 500 W. Onondaga Street. They have plenty of free parking in the back.

Besides the Spa Ed tells me they also have an event room available for use. It
has been used for occasional fundraisers, as a meeting space, retreats, yoga, for

in your own food or caterer. I have actually been there for a couple of events and it
works very nicely.

There is a salon also located in the Spa at 500; recently I went there and had a
facial and it was lovely. They provide all the usual salon services. Also there is an
acupuncturist available.

Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science began meeting this semester with
local residents to discuss the best way to renovate the field house.
“We want to go into the community and talk to different groups and find out what
they want to see there,” said Brian Luce, the engagement fellow at UPSTATE: Center for
Design, Research, and Real Estate, who is helping organize the project. “It’s not about
what we want to see the field house as, it’s about what they want to see.”
The tentative timeframe of the project, Luce said, is for students to have finalized
designs of the field house at the end of this semester. Currently, there are 32 SU
students involved in the project.
To fund the renovation, The NWSI and UPSTATE are contributing $35,000, which will be
matched by the city’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Programs to make
a total of $70,000. He added that the budget will cover different components of the
project, including students’ design plans and objects that will be built or placed in the
park.

The NWSI has also been involved in the project with the goal of being a liaison between
students and Near Westside residents, said Stacey Lindbloom, the engagement scholar
for the Near Westside Initiative.
Right now, there are four meetings set up between the student designers and the
community, she said. The meetings will allow students to gain a sense of what the role
of the field house should be at the park, Lindbloom said.

The project started with 14 designs but has been narrowed down to three designs. The
three designs range from minimal intervention to a total overhaul of the field house,
Kohen said.

But one of the biggest challenges ParkStudio will face, Lindbloom said, is how to get the

Safety is the biggest concern for Near Westside resident Carole Horan, who lives across

project’s first community meeting.

This input is important because Skiddy Park is in the center of the neighborhood, said

east, there is public housing and to the west are neighboring schools.

An exhibition of artwork by students from Fowler High School was featured at
SALTQuarters throughout the month of February. The works were created during
this current school year by the students of Fowler art teacher Izzy Dugger. Most
students are in the Studio in Art course, the beginning art course needed to graduate
from high school. Others are in 2D or 3D classes as an elective. The assignments
are based on learning the Principles of Design and Art Elements, and the content is
based on the New York State Art Learning Standards, which include art history, studio
art, aesthetics and art criticism.
“La mayoría de mis estudiantes han llegado a mi clase no porque ellos aman el arte,

The exhibit showed the work of students who excelled and pushed themselves to do
more than just what is required to pass, said Dugger.
“I believe that school is not about learning facts, but about learning how to think.
My art classes teach students to think like an artist: look more closely, find beauty
in everyday things [like the still life paintings], make new connections, go beyond
ordinary ways of thinking, generate new perspectives, work hard at the edge of
their potential, concentrate their attention for long periods of time [like in the blind
contour drawings], dream and fantasize [like the tint scale silhouette paintings] and
to create new ideas [such as the informal balance sculptures],” says Dugger.
“Most of my students have come to my class not because they love art, but because
they need it to graduate. Once they get here, they find that it is not an easy course at
all, and they must continually stretch their minds to the point of being uncomfortable
in order to achieve greatness. This exhibition demonstrates the work of those
students.”
The Fowler High School student exhibit at SALTQuarters is part of the collaboration
between the Near West Side Initiative (NWSI) and Say Yes to Education’s aim to
create a “Say Yes Neighborhood” on Syracuse’s Near West Side by capitalizing on the
NWSI’s community revitalization efforts. By stressing the importance of educational
attainment and its connection to urban community revitalization, the “Say Yes
Neighborhood” consists of three schools that feed into one another: Seymour Dual
Language Academy, Westside Academy at Blodgett and Fowler High School. The “Say
Yes Neighborhood” on the Near West Side weaves together the elements of the SALT
(Syracuse Art, Literacy and Technology) District with Say Yes’ educational theory of
change by building bridges of relevancy and real-life applications of learned skills for
neighborhood students.

SaltQuarters is curated and managed by Stacey Lindbloom, a Syracuse University
Engagement Scholar working for the Near Westside Initiative. Through the
Engagement Scholar Program, SU students have the opportunity to work with local
organizations part time while working on a graduate degree.

About SALTQuarters
In 2013, the NWSI, a not-for-profit with the mission of revitalizing the Near Westside
of Syracuse, was funded by ArtPlace, a national foundation focused on Creative
Placemaking, to transform a once vacant restaurant/bar into a hub for artists and
creative individuals. Over the past year, the building has been transformed into
SALTQuarters, a 4,000 square foot building, with two apartments, three art studios
and a gallery space. The building is located at the corner of Otisco and Wyoming
streets, a critical intersection in the neighborhood where residential meets
commercial. In addition to the building, SALTQuarters has a large area of green space
to be used for events, exhibitions and large fabrication. The goal of SALTQuarters is
to generate a creative hub for artistic endeavors that engage with the Near Westside
community.

Healthy Start to the Week

For the past several months, students at Blodgett School have been able to start
their week with a healthy snack provided by Nojaim’s grocery store. Every Monday,
a delivery of fresh apples, oranges and bananas arrives- enough for every student
in the school to have a snack. This collaboration is supported by the Lerner Center
for Public Health Promotion at Syracuse University of which the Healthy Monday
campaigns are a large initiative. Healthy Monday is focused on reducing chronic
disease by encouraging people to use Monday as a day to think about their health
and start or sustain healthy behaviors. While students are enjoying their snack,
Principal Al Hicks shares a Healthy Monday tip during the morning announcements
to encourage students think about how eating healthy foods and staying active can
help them be successful at school.
As part
of the
innovation
zone,
Blodgett
School now
operates
under an
extended
day, so
students
are in the
classroom
daily from
8:00 am
until 3:30
pm. Some
students
eat lunch early in the school day so they may go a long time before their next meal.
Health teacher, Cathy Kline, says that having a snack during the day helps students
stay focused and be productive all day.

This partnership began during the fall of 2013 when principal Al Hicks invited
organizations from the Near West Side neighborhood to meet the teachers and
building staff to begin to identify ways that his
students and staff might collaborate with these
organizations to enrich the school day. “I want
to embed enrichment into the curriculum,” Hicks
says. Bringing physical activity and nutrition
education into the classroom not only helps the
students learn about health, it helps them learn
math and science too.

Nojaim’s grocery store owner Paul Nojaim is
committed to improving the health of the Near
West Side neighborhood and in addition to
providing fruit for Blodgett, he partners with
neighborhood schools to provide grocery store
tours for students to learn about health and
nutrition, and to also learn the business side of
operating a grocery store. The store has also
taken steps to help shoppers make healthier
choices by placing simple, healthy recipe cards
near featured items and transforming checkout
lanes to have fruit and granola bars instead of
chips and candy.
Nojaim sees the weekly fruit deliveries as more than a way to help kids stay satisfied
during the school day, it is also a way to expose them to trying new foods. Nojaim
has begun to include different varieties of fruit like pears, plums and other seasonal
produce in the weekly deliveries. The students are loving the fruit too! Just recently
a Blodgett student shopping in Nojaim’s with a family member tracked down Paul to
express his appreciation for the snack. Together Nojaim’s grocery store and Blodgett
School are planting seeds of health and wellness for students in the Near West Side
neighborhood and oh, how sweet it is!

This summer, beginning on July 8th and running until August 15th, the 4th annual
Teen Art Portfolio Development Program will again offer a 6 –week intensive running
18-22 hours per week. The time, professional instruction, and guidance provided
gives serious art students the extra advantage to get into art programs at the best
colleges and Universities, often with large scholarships. The participants will work 3
½ days per week under the guidance of Syracuse University art professors Yvonne
Buchanan and Dorene Quinn, in converted artist studios at 831 West Fayette St. The
studios are on the bus line and easily accessible.
A great portfolio that shows the skills that programs are looking for in prospective
students is the key to choices, scholarships and future careers in the creative field.
Students selected for the program will participate tuition free, and professional
quality art materials and tools will be provided, as well as presentation portfolios
to showcase student’s work. Students will be prepared for the college application
process, and there will be ongoing mentorship and assistance to help artists select
and apply for college programs. Successful summer participants will also have the
option to continue to study and develop skills under the guidance of the artist/
educators part-time during the academic year, gaining assistance in selecting and
applying to colleges and universities. The program is designed to work with talented
and committed young artists who lack the resources to pay tuition for similar
opportunities. The program is housed in the Near West Side on the “Arts Corridor on
West Fayette Street, however all City teens who meet the criteria are welcome.
Talent Agency will be working with CNY Works for those students who meet the
income guidelines, and if eligible, some students can be paid to participate, however,
any Syracuse City youth is eligible for the portfolio program, based on interest and
ability alone.

Since the early 19th century, railroads have been a stable, reliable, and systematic
mode of transportation in the United States. However, though the railroad industry
is one of the oldest and most established in the country, there are still many dangers
that railroad workers presently encounter on a daily basis. Mary Moran, co-founder
of TiLights, explains that because many railroad journeys can take up to multiple days
or even weeks, much of the activity conducted by railroad personnel is executed
during the night and in the dark. Therefore, visibility of important focal points such
as derails, foul points, and switches becomes increasingly difficult for conductors and
laborers on the railroads, causing the likelihood of accidents to escalate substantially.

Due to these nation-wide hazards, Mary and her husband, originated TiLights in
2009, a company located in the Delavan Center working to make railroad focal points
more visible in the dark and increase productivity for railroad personnel. TiLights
manufactures solar-powered lights mounted on the middle of railroad ties to indicate
focal points needed for safe travel. Because these lights are solar-powered, they
do not require wiring and take very little time to install. TiLights are also extremely
durable and can withstand almost all weather conditions, including circumstances
which occur throughout the winter season. As Mary explains, TiLights are a far
better approach to increasing nighttime visibility on railroads than the more outdated
method of simply painting railroad ties to indicate focal
points.

Though TiLights are an efficient and functional addition
to railroads, these solar-powered lights can ameliorate
visibility in many other settings as well. Mary explains
that TiLights have been or could be useful in marine
applications, mining areas, cross walks, college
campuses, campsites, highways, and any other modes of
transportation.

The Future of TiLights
Since being issued a patent for TiLights in October
of 2013, a document which prevents others from
duplicating or manufacturing the same product, Mary
envisions the business steadily growing within the next
few years. She explains that TiLights will continue to
get the word out about their products through trade
shows and press releases, along with advertising directly
to railroads. Because the lights have been field tested
and proven to be very popular, along with the fact that
human factor incidents have gone down to almost zero
when using the lights, customer interest is likely to grow at a fast pace.

Along with the continuation of advertising, TiLights is planning to bring all of its
assembly to the United States in March of 2014 (assembly previously occurred in
China). This will help TiLights to improve marketing, create a brighter LED, and
be more responsive to customer needs, as custom orders will be completed more
efficiently. This manufacturing move is extremely exciting for the company as it is
expected to increase awareness of its products. Mary also explained that the TiLight
Force, their newest model, will soon be introduced. This light will be magnetically
attached, making installation even simpler. Finally, the business is looking to work
with state and local governments through collaboration with railroad associations to
communicate the need for a law requiring illuminated switches on railroad, which
will help to increase consumer demand for TiLights.
Working with the Near Westside Initiative Business Association

TiLights joined the Near Westside Initiative Business Association about one year ago,
and Mary explains that she has enjoyed attending the monthly meetings and getting
to know more about other local businesses growing in the community. She feels
that belonging to the association is a great fit for her since TiLights and the Business
Association are both young organizations, and she has described their meetings as a
source of social gatherings for the businesses to discuss implications associated with
functioning in the Near Westside community.
Mary has strong hopes for TiLights’ future workings with the Business Association.
She believes that working with other local businesses will help in gaining a conduit of
information for the company, whether involving local or state governments, learning
about concerns and needs of the community, or increasing networking ability. She is
confident that the Business Association will help to open doors for TiLights and looks
forward to continuing her collaborative efforts with this “great group of people.”
Mary sees the Business Association as an “expansive opportunity” for TiLights as the
company continues to grow.

Acerca de las educadoras
Now in it’s fourth year Talent Agency has had notable success in helping students
through the portfolio and application process., with every graduating senior now in a
two or four year college. Students who have applied to 4-year programs have been
accepted with substantial financial assistance and scholarships.
Yvonne Buchanan es profesora asociada de la ilustración en la Universidad de
Syracuse, Facultad de Artes Visuales y Escénicas. Antes de llegar a la Universidad de

About the Educators
Yvonne Buchanan is an associate professor of
illustration at Syracuse University, College of
Visual and Performing Arts. Prior to coming
to Syracuse University in 1995, Professor
Buchanan had a successful career as a
freelance illustrator in New York City. In 2006,
she received a Master of Fine Art Degree from
Bard College in film and video, and is currently
working in the area of video and animation.
Her work is shown in museums and galleries
around the region and nationally. She has
taught illustration, narrative drawing, and
video.
Dorene Quinn is a sculptor and currently
teaches in the Syracuse University sculpture program, she has also served as
a visiting professor at the State University of New York at Oswego, and was a
professor of sculpture, 3-Dimensional Design and drawing for Pratt Institute at the
Utica campus for 15 years prior to her move to Syracuse. Her teaching specialty is
foundational art skills in design, drawing and sculpture. Professor Quinn exhibits her
sculptural work in museums and galleries around the region and nationally.

Did you know that colorectal cancer can be prevented?
Screening can find precancerous polyps that can be removed before they turn into cancer. Screening can
also help find colorectal cancer early when it is easiest to treat. Although colorectal cancer is preventable,
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that as of 2013, one in three adults (about 23
million) aged 50 and 75 were not up-to-date with their recommended colorectal cancer screening. Don’t
wait, being screened for colorectal cancer could save your life!
Free colorectal cancer screening is available through the Onondaga County Cancer Services Program (CSP)
for men and women aged 50 to 64 who do not have health insurance. Free mammograms and Pap tests
are also available for women aged 40 to 64 who do not have health insurance. Screenings are provided at
healthcare provider sites throughout the city of Syracuse and Onondaga County. Call 435-3653 today to
