Talent Agency student earns full ride scholarship to attend Alfred University School of Art

Anthony Griffin, a senior at Syracuse Academy of Science Charter
School, has been awarded a full ride scholarship to Alfred University,
School of Art this coming fall to study sculpture. His tuition, housing,
food, and fees are all covered by the scholarship, plus an additional
stipend each semester during the four-year program.
Anthony started drawing as a form of stress relief, but people started
noticing his skill and a family friend took the initiative to fill out and
submit an application to The Talent Agency on his behalf. He volunteered
for a year and has been working there since 2012 through CNYWorks.
“It’s kept him busy and out of trouble. It’s a really good program,” said his
mother, Lynette. Anthony “spent his days, evenings, almost to night here
with them. Saturdays, Sundays… he’s very involved here.”
Talent Agency Teen Art Portfolio Development, Inc. is specifically geared toward teens who have a lot of ability in the arts, but lack
resources. The program is designed to coach them in developing a
portfolio that makes them competitive to top-notch programs, and their
success rate is staggering. One hundred percent of students who have

Estudiante de la Agencia de Talento gana una beca
completa para estudiar en la Universidad Alfred
Anthony Griffin, estudiante en su último año en Syracuse Academy of
Science Charter School, ha ganado una beca completa para la escuela de artes
en la Universidad Alfred, para el próximo otoño para estudiar escultura. Su
matricula, vivienda, comida y tarifas están cubiertos por la beca, además de
un estipendio adicional cada semestre durante el programa de cuatro años.
Anthony comenzó a dibujar como forma de aliviar tensión, pero la gente

Getting involved
Getting involved
I am pretty sure if you have been reading my column
these last 5 years you know me well enough to realize
I believe in getting involved in neighborhood and community issues. Recently I had the opportunity to attend
a community meeting at the Southwest Community
Center in regards to Consensus. To further explain, here
is a quote from their website (www.consensuscny.com):
“Consensus is helping to shape a vision for more effective and efficient governance across Onondaga County.
Through the Commission's work, the community will
take a leadership role in defining how it wants to be
organized and governed locally – with public services
that meet high quality standards at an affordable price.
our corner //
With data-driven solutions, the region's governance
structures can be modernized to meet the needs of the
21st century, with local resources focused equitably and effectively to help our
economy and protect our community assets. The study process, which began in
June 2014, is expected to be completed in 2015.”
In other words, they are looking at the size, scope and varieties of governance in
Onondaga County. How does this affect us one might ask? So many times as city
residents we forget that we are also county residents and what happens in county
government affects all of us who live in the city ~~ after all we live in the county
as well. One of the most startling facts shared with us is that it costs each of us
approximately $3,900 to maintain these forms of government. Wow!
Other interesting facts about Onondaga County:
• 1 county • 1 city • 15 towns • 19 villages • 36 elected executives
• 174 elected legislators
Looking at these facts you can imagine there is a lot of overlap in our government, much duplication and I also see there can be several opportunities for
streamlining our government.
Onondaga County is the first in New York to launch a community-wide effort to
modernize local government. We could be a leader in our state by successfully
modernizing the way we do business. It would become more efficient financially
and in providing services. It is challenging to consider not doing business the
way we have always done it, but times move on and we need to keep up.
This process is not being completed behind closed doors. And that is important
for all of us to know; the commission wants our feedback, they want us to know
exactly what the data is, what the options could be, in short they want all of us
to be involved. By the time you read this the informational meetings that introduced this to the public have been completed. However you can still be involved
in giving them your feedback and there may be other meetings scheduled as the
work goes on.

alerts and become informed. Then after you understand better what is going
on, share your thoughts with them. This is what having a voice is all about! And

Estoy bastante segura de que si usted ha estado leyendo
mi columna estos últimos 5 años me conoce lo suficiente
como para darse cuenta de que creo en involucrarse en
asuntos vecinales y comunitarias. Recientemente tuve la
oportunidad de asistir a una reunión de la comunidad en

LISTENING: SHORT UPDATE ON THE EFFORTS TO IMPROVE HEALTH IN THE NEAR WESTSIDE

“It takes a village to raise a child.”
This ancient African proverb suggests
that the education of children is a
responsibility of the entire community.
The message in this proverb can be
applied to the Near Westside: growth
and healthy neighborhood development
can’t be achieved without the input of
community members. This is precisely
why we think it is important to meet
and to share different points of view
on the current status of the health of
the community living in the neighbor-
hood, and most important of all how to
improve it.
We are working together. During the
past month, The Lerner Center has conducted meeting with residents in the
Near West Side, as well as with the
staff from community-based organizations and schools. (These community
meetings are part of the work of a grant
awarded to the Lerner Center, by the
New York State Health Foundation, to
improve the health of the community).
The main goal is to learn about current
barriers, and more important of all, the
incentives to become physically active
2
and exercise. Although the conversations have been conducted around the
topic of physical activity, and health,
other concerns, and needs, have been
expressed. We will soon share a report
on the findings.
We are listening. During the meetings, community members have recommended the improvement of the current
available spaces, such as parks, and
improvements in safety. As a result of
these conversations, and past conversations, you will learn in the next edition
of this newsletter, about the future renovations to take place in Skiddy Park, as
well as new ideas to improve the safety
of the neighborhood. The bottom line is:
“your input counts.”

and concerns. We are really grateful for
your participation, for the perspectives
shared, and for teaching us about what
is important for the community living
in the neighborhood. We are truly honored to work with you in improving the

Pedestrian cutthroughs on the NWS

As Near Westside residents know well,
some distinctive characteristics of the
Near Westside neighborhood are beautiful
Victorian architecture, lots of pedestrians, and VERY long blocks. Having such
long blocks can sometimes make a trip
to a friend’s house or the grocery store
around the corner take a lot longer for
walkers. You have probably noticed there
are several informal short cuts, or cutthroughs that have popped up throughout
the neighborhood. One such cut-through is
located between the 500 block of Seymour
Street and the 600 block of Gifford Street
where you may have seen walkers cutting
their own path through vacant lots to
make their trips shorter.
The City of Syracuse has heard from
neighbors and property owners that
they would like to see these informal
short-cuts made into more formal pedestrian walkways. The City is hoping
to respond to these requests, and is
considering making the path between
Seymour and Gifford our first official
pathway by constructing a concrete or
paved walkway, and adding lighting
and safety features. Before any action
is taken, however, we want to make sure
that all neighbors are aware of this possibility, have the opportunity to share

Griffin said that he always knew he
wanted to go to college, but he did not
know it would be for art. “This place has
developed my talents. If you look at my
portfolio, it’s changed so much. I’m really
proud of myself” he stated for a video
about the program. And Lynette agrees:
“If it weren’t for Dorene [Quinn] and
Yvonne [Buchanan, the Founders and
Co-Directors of the program]—they’re
amazing. They took him in and saw more
in him than I did. They saw his talent and
pulled it out, and if it weren’t for them
there probably would be no Alfred.”
Griffin visited several colleges, including taking a trip to New York City, before
deciding to attend Alfred. In Alfred “everyone knows everyone. It’s very friendly.
And it’s small so people know each other.
It doesn’t need a city; it’s its own community. . . . It’s in the middle of nowhere—no
distractions. I get distracted really easily,
so that’s perfect. Everyone thought I was a

As the Near Westside Initiative
continues to celebrate successful
students on the Near Westside Fowler
High School students continue to outdo
themselves.
Fowler High School staff have been
working extremely hard to ensure
that their students are excelling in
their academics and in their person
endeavors. While encouraging students
to be “the best me I can can be” students
like Charles Hickey have taken it upon
themselves to not only excel in school
but to excel in their community as well.
The Near Westside Initiative would
like to congratulate Charles Hicky for
having been selected by school staff as
the March student of the month!
Charles would like to introduce
himself to the community…
Hello, my name is Charles Hickey Jr.
I am a junior at Fowler High School
and I am on High Honor Roll. I work
as a lifeguard for Syracuse Parks and
Recreation. I am currently in training
to be a Water Safety Instructor. On
my spare time I like to volunteer at
Southwest Community Center for
Special Olympics. When they would go
on swim meets I would also travel with
them. My studies are very important to
me. My favorite subject is Math. I would
like to continue my education in college
to become a math teacher in the near
future. I am a shy person until I get to
know you, then I am very outgoing. I
used to look up to my older siblings,
which they supported everything I
did/do. I realize I have to set goals for
myself, which is why I am an extremely
independent person. I was taught at a
very young age how to swim and this past
year I joined the high school swim team.
Also, before I joined the swim team I fell
in love with running, so I was eager to
join the high school cross country team.
I come from a very diverse family, which
is very big. I live at home with both of my
parents, 3 younger brothers, 2 younger
sisters, and older sister with 2 kids.
One’s success is dependent by a
grand combination of factors. Charles
chooses to immerse himself in
positive environments. His choices are
reflective of his positive demeanor.
The Near Westside Initiative would like

to our community and we encourage
our neighbors to congratulate Charles
for all his success and service to our
community!

Yo soy una persona tímida hasta que
llego a conocer a alguien, y después soy
muy extrovertido. Yo solía ver a mis
hermanos mayores, los que apoyaron
todo lo que hice/hago. Me doy cuenta de
que tengo que fijar metas para mí, y por
eso soy una persona muy independiente.
Me enseñaron a una edad muy joven a
nadar y el año pasado me uní al equipo
de natación de la escuela secundaria.
También, antes de unirme al equipo
de natación me enamoré de correr, así
que me quedé con ganas de unirme al
equipo de atletismo a través de la escuela
secundaria. Yo vengo de una familia
muy diversa, que es muy grande. Yo vivo
en casa con mis dos padres, 3 hermanos
menores, 2 hermanas más jóvenes, y su
hermana mayor con 2 niños.
El éxito depende de una gran
combinación de factores. Charles
decide sumergirse en ambientes
positivos. Sus opciones son el reflejo de
su actitud positiva.

Fowler HS student delegates participate in Puerto Rican Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute

Since 1991, approximately seven thousand
high school juniors and seniors from eight
local delegations have gathered to participate
in the Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute. Students
work together with their fellow student delegates to facilitate all aspects of the PR/HYLI
weekend. The institute, which takes place
in Albany, NY, is life changing for many
students. Four of our very own Near Westside
students from Fowler High School represented the 2015 Syracuse Delegation along
with students from the surrounding school
districts. Our students included Moises A.
Gracciano, Mario Cabral, Jayna Delgado
Vega and Keilly Dorbignit-Aloma.
Assemblymen Angelo Del Toro was adamant in helping Hispanic/Latino students
find their voices. From March 21st through
March 23rd, nearly 310 delegates came
together in the Capital District for the experience of a lifetime. The purpose of the
weekend was to develop Hispanic/Latino

Join NWSI for Spring Cleaning in the Neighborhood with Clean Up ‘Cuse

With spring just around the corner,
everyone is excited to see the snow
disappear and to see the flowers bloom
again. The one not-so-beautiful thing
that always appears as the snow melts
away is the large amounts of trash that
have been buried in the snow for the
last five months. This year, the city of
Syracuse is rallying all of its citizens
to come out in solidarity to clean up
our streets and make our city beautiful
once again.
As one of the selected target areas for
“Clean Up ‘Cuse” the Near Westside will
have an opportunity to be spruced up as
we enter the spring and summer months.
To do so, the city of Syracuse needs your
help on Saturday, April 25th from 9am
to 12pm. Volunteers will be meeting at
Ward Bakery Park (on Shonnard Street
between Oswego Street and Slocum
Avenue) at 9am to receive a t-shirt,
some gloves, tools, trash bags, and some
instructions on how to best clean up the
surrounding community.
The main organizers for this event
in the Near Westside are the Westside
Residents Coalition and the Near
Westside Initiative. In addition, several
local businesses and not-for-profits will
bring groups of volunteers to help out.
What is still needed now is you! We
need as many volunteers as possible
to lighten the load and to make it a fun
and encouraging day in the community.
For all your hard work you will be
rewarded with a great t-shirt, some food
and refreshments at the end of the event,
and most importantly, the satisfaction
that you are making your community a
better and more beautiful place to live,
work, and play.

desarrollo saludable del barrio no puede
ser alcanzado sin las opiniones de los
miembros de la comunidad. Es precisamente por esta razón, que creemos que
es de mucha importancia el reunirnos
como comunidad para compartir puntos de vista en el estado actual de salud
del barrio, y como mejorarlo.

GISELLE ROSENTHAL
THE STRENGTH IN OUR SCARS
Ride the Bus is a thesis exhibition by Allison
Kirsch, a graduating senior studying sculpture
at Syracuse University. Kirsch’s work examines
movement through space, capturing motion in
three-dimensional sculpture. For this exhibition,
she is working with a variety of sculptural media
to reevaluate the lack of interaction that occurs
on public transportation. The show will be on
view from April 9-11 from 6-8 pm, with a reception April 10 from 6-9 pm.
Giselle Rosenthal is a sculpture student graduating this spring from Syracuse University. Her
work explores ideas of biology through imaginary situations suggested by sculptures. The
work for this exhibition is centered on bodily
issues such cancer cells and psychological
disorders presented in playful interactive structures. Her work will be on view April 23-25.
Join us during National Mental Health Awareness
month for a multimedia exhibit exploring the enticing, yet false salvation of self-harm and the strength
and beauty that grows from breaking free of harmful impulses. The Strength in Our Scars is inspired
by artist Elizabeth Droge-Young’s experience with
clinical depression and reactions to feeling silenced
when something desperately needs to be communicated. The show will be on view Fridays 5-8 pm and
Saturdays and Sundays from 2-6 pm, with a reception May 1 from 5-8 pm.

por Allison Kirsch, una estudiante de escultura
