SEYMOUR ACADEMY HOSTS ANNUAL SPAGHETTI DINNER
LA CENA DE ESPAGUETIS EN LA ACADEMIA BILINGÜE SEYMOUR

Students at Seymour Dual Language Academy were thrilled to see their teachers serving dinner
plates at the January 15th Spaghetti Dinner. This year’s Spaghetti Dinner was brought to the
families in part by the Parent Teacher Organization Group and the extraordinary staff at Seymour.
Dedicated Seymour parents brainstormed innovative and creative ways to fundraise for their
school and get parents into the building to interact with the staff on a different manor. Their
brainstorming efforts brought a Spaghetti Dinner into fruition.
The Spaghetti Dinner was prepped and served by Seymour staff with love. The staff took turns
throughout the day making sure the food was well taken care of - keeping in mind to stir the sauce
in the schools kitchen every two minutes.
Approximately 100 parents and students indulged in delicious plates. The mission of the Parent
Teacher Organization Group was completed as school staff, students and parents had fruitful
conversations over dinner.
"It was a joy to see all the staff students and family come together breaking bread enjoying
each others company. Food is a common love that we all share and it was a very peaceful event people should do more of it, "said Miss Worsen.
The night ended with basket giveaways. Seymour staff put together a total of twelve gift baskets
to be raffled off to families. The baskets ranged from spaghetti dinner kits to educational games
and stuffed animals. The winners of the baskets were overwhelmingly grateful for their winnings.
The night was a complete success - thanks to all the hard work put in by both Seymour school staff
and school parents.

Los estudiantes de la academia bilingüe Seymour estaban encantados de ver a sus maestros
sirviendo platos en la cena de espaguetis del 15 de enero. La cena de espaguetis de este año fue
llevado a las familias, en parte, por el grupo de la organización padres/profesores y el personal
extraordinario en Seymour.
Padres dedicados pensaron a ideas innovadoras y creativas para recaudar fondos para su escuela
y para obtener que los padres llegaran al edificio para interactuar con el personal en una manera
diferente. Sus esfuerzos de intercambio de ideas trajeron una cena de espaguetis a buen término.
La Cena de espaguetis fue preparado y servido por el personal de Seymour con amor. El personal
se turnaban durante todo el día por lo que la comida estaba bien cuidado - teniendo en cuenta
revolver la salsa en la cocina de la escuela a cada dos minutos.
Aproximadamente 100 padres y estudiantes disfrutaron de los deliciosos platos. La misión del

It has been nearly five years
since I started writing to you
from Carole’s Corner. I have
written about myself, the
neighborhood, changes I have
seen, things I hope for. You have
read about new neighbors, new
businesses, new programs, a
little history has been thrown in once in a while and always I
share the many things I have been thankful for. I had so much
fun when I wrote to you about house colors and shopping local
– like right here in our neighborhood! It was good to bring to
you the challenges of living in the city and asking for what we
need; equally good to challenge you to do your part of living in
the city by voting and speaking up. I have learned so much by
writing this column; I have learned to keep my eyes wide open
and experience new people and new things. I have seen things
in a new way that have been right under my nose all the time
I have lived here! My hope is that you have begun to see our
neighborhood in new ways as well and that is has increased your appreciation as well as participation.
This past year I have been changing things up in my life, letting some things go, learning new things
and trying to reclaim some time for myself so I may pursue other pleasures. I came to learn later in
life that I have artistic abilities and this is definitely an area I want to pursue. You will likely see me
around the neighborhood with my camera looking for the perfect shot, watch out – it might even be
you! I also want to pursue some more writing; have seriously been considering starting a blog. If I
do you will certainly read about that in future columns because I am pretty sure this piece of heaven
which we call the Near Westside will be featured prominently. I am sure by now you all know I am a
very optimistic woman and I am always noticing new and enticing things happening around us. And I
like to share these observations.
So, I have decided to share the writing of this column. I have introduced Karaline Rothwell to you a
couple of times and I am sure many of you also have come to know her. She is my neighbor, a delight
to have here on the Near Westside! She is very active in making positive changes in our world and I
so appreciate her enthusiasm and energy. She will be writing every other month as will I. Karaline will
bring a new perspective to this space, new observations and perhaps even new challenges but I am
sure she will keep it positive and bright.

Han pasado casi cinco años desde que empecé a
escribir a usted desde la esquina de Carole. He escrito
acerca de mí mismo, el barrio, los cambios que he
visto, y las cosas que espero. Usted que ha leído
sobre los nuevos vecinos, nuevos negocios, nuevos
programas, un poco de historia ha sido lanzado en de

NEAR WESTSIDE PEACEMAKING PROJECT:

In December 2014, the Near Westside Peacemaking Project (NWSPP) graduated its first group of
peacemakers. Peacemaking is a traditional Native American approach to conflict that focuses on
healing and restoring relationships, rather than finding fault or deciding guilt/innocence. Twenty
volunteers completed a 10-week training program (over 20 hours!) that included topics such as the
principals of peacemaking, the history of the Near Westside, the art of storytelling, an introduction
to the justice sytstem, mock circles, and a two-day workshop with Native American expert
consultants. The volunteers were recruited through community outreach at neighborhood events,
church functions, school activities and other meetings. Being a peacemaker requires commitment to
completing the training program and participating in peacemaking circles. Many of the peacemakers
live on the Near Westside, seven are native Spanish speakers, and all have a familiarity with the
neighborhood and believe in the community’s ability to resolve conflict.
Marilyn Goulet is a member of St. Lucy’s Church and the Westside Peddlers. Marilyn decided to
become a peacemaker because she wants to “help people heal” and “get [people] to peace.”
Marilyn didn’t miss a single training session. She “loved every bit of it,” particularly the “building of a
community, sharing a meal.” Marilyn especially enjoyed the workshop with Native American expert
consultants Wendy and Leroy Hill. For her, Wendy and Leroy exhibited the importance of “listening
deeply to every person’s story without judgment.”
Eduardo Santos came to Syracuse in 1996. He has been working on the Near Westside for the
past five years. Although encouraged to attend the training by his employer, Eduardo quickly
started to feel like being a peacemaker was an opportunity to “give back and make a change in the
community.” Eduardo hopes the peacemaking program will “heal broken relationships between
family members, friends and neighbors in the community.” For Eduardo, the training experience
changed his approach on how to resolve conflicts. He learned “to listen like a ‘heart with big ears,’
not to judge, and to try to understand the root of the conflicts.”
The first floor of 601 Tully Street is the future home of the NWSPP! The peacemaking program will
accept referrals from community members, the Syracuse Housing Authority, the courts, schools,

s we quickly roll into 2015, it is always good to look back at 2014
and see all the great projects/events that took place over the past
year. Once again, it was a packed year, full of exciting progress and steady
improvements made in the Near Westside. Here are some of the highlights:

PRIMARY CARE CENTER WEST
In January St. Joseph’s hospital opened their brand new
clinic known as Primary Care Center West. The new
clinic is 16,000 square feet and offers comprehensive
medical services and is accepting new patients.

In August the Near Westside had its annual Multicultural
Block Party in Skiddy Park. Over 1500 people attended this
past year! There was great live music, dancing, food, and
games. It was wonderful to see the neighborhood come
out and celebrate the diversity present in our community.

In October the Near Westside Initiative (NWSI) was honored
with the Mayor Richard M. Daley Legacy Award for Global

States Green Building Council. Representatives from the
NWSI went down to New Orleans to receive the award for
all the great work happening in the neighborhood.

WEST STREET IMPROVEMENTS
This past summer the State Department of Transportation
made significant improvements to West Street. On each
side of the street a lane was reduced, parking was installed,
and a bike path was created in the service lane. Look for
a pedestrian crosswalk coming in 2015 at Otisco Street!

The week before Thanksgiving, Near Westside partners and
volunteers met at Blodgett School for our annual Thanksgiving
dinner. Over 400 people attended the dinner and more than
30 volunteers made the event a wonderful success.

The Near Westside Initiative wrapped up another great year with
its annual holiday party and holiday light contest on December 18.
Residents packed La Casita Cultural Center for a night full of food and
fellowship. The event also featured performances by Bomba y Plena,
La Casita’s dance troupe, as well as student performers from the
center’s Mi Musica program. Students enrolled La Casita’s Bilingual
Literacy Program also sang holiday songs in English and Spanish.

concurso de luces el 18 de diciembre. Los residentes llenaron el Centro
Cultural La Casita para una noche llena de comida y compañeros. El evento

In addition to the night’s spectacular performances, residents also
had the chance to cast their ballots for their favorite light displays
from NWSI’s second annual holiday light contest. This year’s contest
featured 18 participants in two different categories: one for residents
that decorated their homes with lights, and one for residents that
decorated the doors to their homes. Julia McKinney took first place in
the Tower Residents category. In the Home Resident Category, Lisa
Edel took first place and Ellen Parks took second. Each of the women
received a gift card to Nojaim’s. NWSI would like to thank all those who
helped make both the light contest and the holiday party a success!

PENNIES AT THE QUARTERS OPENS AT SALTQUARTERS
Open for one week only, join us at SALTQuarters Gallery and experience
a space-altering installation made from colorful fields of pennies. Ten
thousand pennies will be suspended in sections within the small gallery,
allowing visitors to pave their way through the space toward the exit.
Inspired by the Near Westside’s resilient beauty in the face of economic
challenges, artist-in-residence, Brendan Rose hopes the pennies can
inspire deliberation about the real and perceived values of beauty within
the city. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, February 7 from
7-9 pm with the gallery being February 8-13 from 1-6 pm.
