WCNY and Symphoria, with assistance from the Near Westside Initiative, are
bringing a celebration of music for all ages to the Near Westside on Saturday, May
30. The event is part of Symphoria’s SPARK series of concerts offered outside typical
concert venues. Using space in the WCNY courtyard as well as the Near Westside
parking lot across from the courtyard, music, including music with a Latin flair,
will fill the air from 4:30 pm until 7 pm.
The evening will include performances by Symphoria’s brass and string quintets,
percussion ensemble, and chamber orchestra. Get up on your feet to join the drum
circle or the dancers, applaud music being made by musicians from the Near
Westside. There will be an instrument petting zoo, activities offered by neighborhood
organizations, and dancing by the talented dancers of La Casita Cultural Center.
Food trucks will be on hand offering a variety of popular summertime fare or bring
your own snacks or even a picnic dinner! Admission to the lawn chair seating area
is free. Tickets for limited seating in the courtyard are available at http://www.

MILITARY AND VETERAN SERVICES
Easter Seals New York’s Syracuse office
operates two vocational programs in
Central New York: the Homeless Veterans
Reintegration Program and Vets2Jobs.
These programs follow a holistic, strengths
based service model that is veteran
centered to provide soft and hard skills for
entry or re-entry into the work place.
Homeless Veterans Reintegration
Program (HVRP)
Funded through the Federal Department of
Labor, the HVRP serves veterans who are
housing insecure or homeless. Following
a work first model for job placement,
the program offers assessment, career
counseling, job readiness, resume writing
and interview practice in order to move
veterans into sustainable employment.
Through an Individualized Employment
Plan, referrals are made to housing, legal,
education, and other services, as well as
to the Veterans Administration for benefits
and health care. Veterans have access to
peer mentors, as well as mentors from the
business community to assist with re-entry,
demilitarizing resumes, and assimilating

into civilian work culture. Veterans are
provided with follow up services for a full
year after securing employment.
Vets2Jobs
Vets2Jobs began in 2013 via funding from
BNY Mellon, serving all veterans with
a special focus on post- 9/11 veterans.
Services include assessment, career
counseling, job readiness, resume writing,
and interview instruction. Participants
receive an Individualized Employment
Plan with referrals to resources ensuring
the veterans’ ability to find, secure and
maintain gainful employment. Veterans’
resumes are demilitarized for job placement
success. Peer mentoring is provided to
ensure veterans are educated about the
civilian workplace. Vets2Jobs offers mock
interviews with local hiring managers as
well as career networking events that
match veterans and organizations with
job openings. Unlike traditional job fairs,
Vets2Jobs events allow veterans to spend
one-to-one time with employers who
actually have open positions.

On April 16th, 2015 the Central New
York Sales and Marketing Executives
awarded Robert J. Daino, president and
CEO of WCNY Public Media, with the
2015 Crystal Ball Award. This prestigious award is bestowed annually by
CNYSME to a local businessperson for
their contributions to the sales and marketing profession and for efforts and
work in the areas of community development and support.
A Syracuse native, Robert Daino was
a clear choice for the Crystal Ball Award
this year, as an innovative entrepreneur,
a community provider/leader and a volunteer. Daino’s made a tremendous effort to
revitalize the Central New York community. As President and CEO of WCNY, he
was instrumental in renovating the CASE
building in the Near Westside and relocating WCNY there in a state-of-the-art
collaborative work space with integrated
green technology. He included in the renovation Enterprise America, a learning center where middle and high school students
can learn about true life strategies in a
city-like environment.
Daino also spearheaded Centralcast,
LLC, the first collaboration of its kind
within PBS that serves as a cost-savings
model for the entire PBS system. This
groundbreaking approach for the delivery
of television content provides as many
as 200 streams of television that can be
delivered across the country, managed
directly from WCNY’s Broadcast and Education Center in Syracuse. This innovative
system controls the content for all stations
in New York and New Jersey, WHYY in
Philadelphia, WTVI in Charlotte, along
with an upcoming launch for PBS Hawaii.
Daino started his professional career at
General Electric in Salina, where he worked
for 10 years before becoming founder, president and CEO of PROMERGENT and ServeCentral LLC. He was appointed president
and CEO of WCNY, a PBS broadcasting
affiliate, in June of 2005.

Talent Agency: Providing a pathway to college art school

Syracuse, NY -The college application process is daunting no matter who you are
or what your background might be. Filling out the applications and financial aid
forms, securing transcripts, and recommendations...it’s a laundry list long enough
to intimidate the most confident high school senior.
It’s particularly daunting if you’re applying to an art or design school, where a
portfolio review - a critical evaluation of selected works completed during the high
school years- is an essential component of the overall application. But compiling a
portfolio demonstrating proficiency in a variety of areas - from technical skill and
versatility of media to concept development - is as much an art as it is a science.
That’s where Talent Agency: Teen Art Portfolio Development, Inc.comes in.
In 2011, artists/teachers Dorene Quinn and Yvonne Buchanan started the Talent
Agency, an organization dedicated to working with economically disadvantaged
kids from the City of Syracuse in the development of a competitive portfolio. The goal
is to compile a representative sampling of their artwork that will then be submitted
as part of their college application packet to art schools.
The participants have to make a big commitment of time and effort to make this
all come together. They attend workshops in painting, digital media, animation,
sculpture, woodworking and drawing for six hours a day, four days a week for six
weeks during the summer. During the school year, there are two three-hour after
school sessions on weekdays and a five hour workshop on Saturdays. Students
participate in the program in addition to attending school, completing homework,
jobs, etc. The program, which started with seven students, will accept up to 25 for
this summer’s workshops.
During the four years Talent Agency has been in existence,16 kids have successfully navigated the portfolio development and college application processes into colleges, including Syracuse University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of
Buffalo, Alfred University and Onondaga Community College. Quinn and Buchanan
are currently working with another crop eager to begin the application process.

Quinn says many of the kids come from difficult family situations and have little
or no home support in tackling the challenging process of applying to college. All of
the kids come from economically disadvantaged homes - that is one of the criteria
for acceptance into the program - and most are the first from their families to even
consider going to college.
It’s important, Quinn says, to recognize that Talent Agency isn’t focused solely
on recruiting students to become artists, although many program participants are
drawn to the program because of its focus on the visual arts. While students are
learning how to develop ideas they can realize in a variety of visual media, they are
also learning discipline, perseverance, gaining self-confidence and working and
growing within a community of like-minded individuals; skills they can apply to
whatever field they choose to pursue.
“Not all of the kids will major in art,” Quinn explains. “We don’t recruit them to
become artists. We recruit them to be productive. We create an environment where
they can succeed.”
According to Quinn, the kids who stick with both the summer and the after school
programs have a 100% rate of entering college and half of the kids who attend the
summer program return for the school year program.
To sustain the program, Talent Agency has partnered with On Point for College,
Say Yes to Education, CNY Works, New York State’s Educational Opportunity
Program, and Syracuse University for a variety of resources. Graduate students
from SU teach art classes and counsel the kids working under the supervision of
experienced teachers. Talent Agency recently received their 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit
status, have established a board of directors and are fund raising. The program is
tuition free for eligible applicants.
The ideal age for students to become a part of Talent Agency’s programs is the
summer between their sophomore and junior years, what Quinn calls a “rising
junior.” They are currently recruiting for the 2015 summer session. Interested

Quinn dice que muchos de los niños provienen de situaciones familiares difíciles y

Agency: Teen Art Portfolio Development, Inc. pueda ayudar.
En 2011, las artistas y profesoras Dorene Quinn y Yvonne Buchanan fundaron el
Talent Agency, una organización dedicada a trabajar con niños de escasos recursos
de la ciudad de Syracuse, en el desarrollo de una cartera competitiva. El objetivo es
reunir una muestra representativa de sus obras de arte que luego se presentara como
parte de su paquete de solicitud de la universidad a las escuelas de arte.
Los participantes tienen que hacer un gran compromiso de tiempo y esfuerzo
para que todo esto sale bien. Ellos asisten a talleres de pintura, medios digitales,
animación, escultura, carpintería y dibujo durante seis horas al día, cuatro días a la
semana durante seis semanas durante el verano. Durante el año escolar, hay dos sesiones de tres horas después de la escuela durante la semana y un taller de cinco horas
el sábado. Los estudiantes participan en el programa, además de asistir a la escuela,
hacer sus tareas, trabajos, etc. El programa, que comenzó con siete estudiantes, aceptará hasta 25 para los talleres de este verano.
Durante los cuatro años que Talent Agency ha existido, 16 niños han navegado

Welcome spring! Now that the weather is regularly
welcoming us outdoors, please keep an eye out for a
few participatory and community art making going
ons in our neighborhood with SALTquaters’ Near
West Side Artist in Residence Moira Williams.
Moira invites you to share your stories, memories and thoughts about our neighborhood in Paul
Nojaim’s Super Market throughout the month of May.
Each story will be recorded and local historians at
the Onondaga Historical Association will help pair
our stories with historical information. Then the
recordings will become a community CD available to
borrow in the Onondaga County Public Library.
We received a Cornell Urban Birds Grant for our
neighborhood to create a small bird and people community orchard. Moira is working with the Westside
Academy at Blodgette School, PEACE INC., Nanette
Bergevin from the Ceramics Guild and Kristen Casey
with the MOST program to create several small bird,
butterfly and pollinator gardens in our neighborhood
and a small people and bird orchard. The orchard
location is in the triangular shaped piece of land
next to the ProLiteracy building and will include
a sculptural piece made with clay beads, birdhouses and a natural trellis to grown
bird attracting vines on. We will be holding an Urban Bird watching celebration on
Saturday May 30th for everyone to join in and get to know our local birds and meet
new neighbors. All Near Westside neighbors are invited to participate in the clay
bead making and the upcoming bird, butterfly and pollinator garden planting. Please

participar en la elaboración de bollas de arcilla y la siembra del jardín para pájaros,

The Celebrating Success Series
recipient for the month of April,
Abshiro Abubeker, is recognized for
taking advantage of opportunities
and approaching challenges with
enthusiasm. Her free time is filled with
activities such as volunteering in the
library and participating in STEM
programing. Abshiro is described by
her teachers as a true ”Westsider”.
Abshiro has an influential demeanor;
she carries the power to motivate not
only herself and her fellow students
but she encourages and tests the
knowledgebase of her teachers to be.
Abshiro’s greatest supporters are those
who she supports - being her parents,
teachers and counselors.
Abshiro understands the reason her
family has settled in the United States.
She puts forth ALL her efforts to prove
she can achieve all she sets forth in
front of her to her Role Model. Abshiro
is involved in DECA, book club, SHPE,
Hillsides Works, bridge building
competition (where her team received
fourth place!). Abshiro is currently
focusing her efforts in building a boat
for the cardboard boat race. Abshiro
says her father is the guiding light
in her life because she recognizes the
obstacles her father had to overcome to
provide for the family.
Abshiro knows that she is worthy
of receiving the title Student Of
The Month based off of her earlier
successes. Abshiro has set a solid
foundation under her feet having
already passed eight regents while
working to complete three more this
spring. She’s been taking college level
classes in hopes of lessening her load
freshman year as she pursues her
studies in criminology.
The Near Westside Initiative would
like to encourage you all to congratulate
Abshiro when you see her!
