Skiddy Park 3 on 3 Tournament
Brings Together NWSI Teens and
SCPD Officers on the Court
Marking the anniversary of the new playground and basketball
courts installed at Skiddy Park, a lively and fun 3 on 3 basketball
tournament was held at the park on Saturday, May 18th. Over
40 teens, between the ages of 13 and 17 came out from 1pm to
5pm to play head to head with their neighbors. However, this
tournament had one major twist: each team got to select one
police officer or fire fighter to join their team in a chance to win
the whole tournament, take
home a trophy, and have
bragging rights.

Marcando el aniversario del nuevo parque infantil y canchas de
baloncesto instaladas en el parque Skiddy, un animado y divertido
torneo de baloncesto se llevó a cabo en el parque el sábado, 18 de
mayo. Más de 40 adolescentes, entre las edades de 13 y 17 salieron
desde las 13:00 hasta las 17:00 para jugar cara a cara con sus

This month I want to introduce you to
Keren Cepeda. She and her husband, Omar
Couvertier, are the new restaurateurs / bakers
in the neighborhood. Recently they opened
Omi’s Bakery, located at 523 Marcellus Street.
This used to be Consuela’s, they have now
taken over. Recently I went in to get a pastry
and discovered a new taste treat in the
neighborhood and someone new to bring to
you.
Este mes quiero presentarle a Keren Cepeda. Ella y su esposo, Omar Couvertier, son
los nuevos restauradores / dueños de panadería en el barrio. Recientemente abrieron
la panadería de Omi, ubicado en 523 de la calle Marcellus. Esto solía ser de Consuela,

When asked how
it was that they
came to Syracuse,
specifically the Near
Westside, Keren
told me that “God
brought us here.”
Their family, Keren and Omi (everybody knows Omar as
“Omi”), and their two children (daughter in Kindergarten and
son in pre-K) live in Corcoran Court. She and Omi are pastors
of Iglesia Pentecostal Peniel at 115 Valley Drive. They came
here to be pastors; “it was a good move.” After they moved
here many of their family came to live in the neighborhood.

Keren was in the business of baking already when they lived
in Puerto Rico. So it was a natural move for her to take over
this place. They have switched the menu somewhat and will
change the menu on a regular basis. I was happy to learn
they will have fish and seafood on Fridays and Saturdays.
She loves baking and loves doing special order cakes and
desserts. Since they have taken over the restaurant they
have seen business pick up.

She told me they are comfortable here, they feel comfortable

there is “positive movement happening” here.

The Skiddy Park 3 on 3
tournament was sponsored
by the Near Westside
Initiative, the Westside
Residents Coalition, and
the Syracuse Police and Fire
Departments. The event
was part of the groups’
ongoing efforts to improve
the relationships and
communication between
the police department and
the youth in the community.
Based on what was seen
on the court, including
high-fives, hugs, and chest bumps, the tournament was wildly successful in getting
the Near Westside teenagers to engage with the police and firefighters in a fun and
informal way.

off of a stolen ball, Joshua

shot for the Westside Ballers

congratulated one another
and the tournament
concluded with the
Westside Ballers receiving
their 2013 Skiddy Park 3 on 3 Tournament Champions trophies.

Artists, politicians, community activists and neighborhood residents crowded into
SALT Quarters for Wednes-day’s opening reception of the artist live/work building
on the Near Westside. Maarten Jacobs, director of the nonprofit Near Westside
Initiative, told those gathered in the art gallery about the transformation of the
building at 115 Otisco St. It had been a one-time restaurant/bar before it was
renovated into a 4,000-square-foot building with two apartments, three artist studios
and a gallery space on two floors.
The project was funded with a grant from ArtPlace, a national foundation committed
to transforming communities through art and cultural projects. The NWI was one of
2,000 applicants and one of 45 to receive funding, said Jacobs.
The grant also included money for stipends for two artists-in-residence, one from
Central New York and the other from outside the region. Jacobs said 40 applications
were received before two artists were selected. He announced John Cardone, of
Syracuse, and Peter Edlund, of Brooklyn, as the two artists who will move into one of
the building’s apartment in June.

flood plain. Edlund also plans an exhibition of his “Forgotten New York,” paintings of
landscapes and botanicals also translated from the Native American place-names, at
601 Tully.

An effort to curb diabetes on Syracuse’s
near West Side by combining nutrition
and health care is getting a boost from
Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.
The insurer is providing a $103,713 grant
to a project designed to improve the
health of people at risk of developing
diabetes.

higher rates than whites.

health center. That program promotes healthy eating, exercise and weight loss.

health center’s existing building on Seymour Street. St. Joe’s, which re-ceived a state
grant to cover the cost of the project, expects to open the new center in January.

As a parent you do many things to keep your baby safe. Getting your pertussis shot can help protect your baby from
pertussis. Pertussis (also known as whooping cough) can cause severe coughing spells, often followed by a “whoop”
sound as the person tries to breathe in. Adults and older children can spread pertussis to your baby. Although the
disease is usually mild in adults, it can make young children very sick. You can protect your baby by:
• Asking about the pertussis shot during your pregnancy. This vaccine is recommended for EVERY pregnancy and
should be given between the 27th and 36th week of pregnancy.
• Keeping your baby’s shots up-to-date so they can build protection against pertussis.
• Making sure anyone in close contact with your baby is vaccinated, including the newborn’s father, siblings,
grandparents, and other care providers.

After the artist introductions were made, everyone stepped outside to christen the
new building with what has become the tradition of throwing a pinch of salt on the
ground. It’s a nod to the past when the area had salt flats and salt workers lived
in the neighborhood. Visitors toured the building’s artist studios and apartments,
listened to live music and gathered around the Fresh Crepe Co. and Recess Mobile
food trucks parked on the property.

the screening.

Each student is reflective of Fowler’s unique diversity. Within Fowler’s student
body, more than 25 different languages are spoken and students’ home
countries range from around the world; a large number are considered refugees.

true story of Fowler truly lies in the students. What makes the school is not the

High school students were paired with college mentors to learn the technique and
process to craft a film. Stu-dents were expected to work outside of class with SU
students and therefore had to manage their time well and plan in advance. The
high school and college students also met with Prof. Breyer
weekly to discuss storytelling and receive feedback on their projects. Participating
high school and college students will be present and speak
during the evening’s screening.

from Syracuse University

In the summer of 2008, weeks before
he started his senior year at Fowler
High School, David Minney received a
mailer about the Say Yes to Education
program.
The mailer offered what then seemed
an impossible prospect: if Minney
met the academic standard, he could
receive four years of tuition-free
college at several schools in New York
State, Syracuse University among
them.

schooling. They were the first at SU to graduate with help from the program,
which started in 2008. Another 139 Say Yes students are enrolled at SU.

Syracuse University Project
Advance courses - essentially
college freshman courses
designed for seniors in high
school.

“I wouldn’t have gone to Syracuse without the grant,” he said. “(Without it) I
would have definitely gone to college, but likely a state school.”

He said he expects it will take time for the Say Yes program to prove its
effectiveness.

Contemporary Colombian Abstract Painting
La Casita tiene nueva exposición de pinturas
abstractas contemporáneas colombianas
Transfiguración del arte: Pintura abstracta contemporánea colombiana es una
colección de óleo y piezas de acrílico sobre lienzo mostrando tres artistas colombianos
contemporáneos que exploran el arte no figurativo. La exhibición se concibe como
una oportunidad de construcción de puentes y el intercambio artístico entre artistas
que residen en el país y en la diáspora, en Colombia, México y los Estados Unidos.
Incluye pinturas de Fernando Manrique, Rafael Ordoñez y Esperanza Tielbaard
Pazmiño, todos los cuales exploran las posibilidades de textura y composición en el
arte abstracto.
Transfiguring Art: Contemporary Colombian Abstract Painting is a collection of oil and
acrylic pieces on canvas showcasing three contemporary Colombian artists exploring
of non-figurative art. The exhibit is conceived as a bridge-building opportunity and
artistic exchange between artists residing at home and in the diaspora, in Colombia,
Mexico, and the United States. It includes paintings by Fernando Manrique, Rafael
Ordoñez, and Esperanza Tielbaard Pazmiño, all of whom explore the of textural and
composition possibilities in abstract art.
The artistic proposals of Manrique, Ordoñez and Pazmiño share an interest in
communicating the rich sensory experiences and of the conceptual suggestions
possible in pictorial abstraction. Their works explore alternative ways of engaging
reality and ask viewers to see through the senses as they travel through interweaving
forms, suggestive textures, and provoking compositions. Their canvases challenge
accepted distinctions between abstract and figurative painting, as well as between
purist and committed art from Latin America, since they incorporate issues of
identity, technology, nature, and affect as themes to be explored through the senses.
Las propuestas artísticas de Manrique, Ordoñez y Pazmiño comparten un interés en la
comunicación de las ricas experiencias sensoriales y de las propuestas conceptuales
posibles en la abstracción pictórica. Sus obras exploran formas alternativas de
tratar la realidad y piden a los espectadores a ver a través de los sentidos a medida
que viajan a través de formas entrecruzadas, texturas sugerentes, provocadoras y

About the Artists

Esperanza Tielbaard Pazmiño is a Colombian artist who now resides in Baldwinsville,
New York. Born in Cali, Colombia, her formal art education began in Colombia
learning oil painting, drawing, sketching techniques and continued in the United
States with the exploration of glass making. In 1985, she returned to Colombia,
setting up her own studio to work with glass and other media. Her two mentors,
Maestro Oviedo and Hernando Tejada, were very prominent Colombian artists; both
became a solid source of inspiration and encouragement to continue her art career.
Esperanza Tielbaard Pazmiño es una artista colombiano que ahora reside en
Baldwinsville, New York. Nacido en Cali, Colombia, su educación artística formal se
inició en Colombia con la pintura al óleo, dibujo, el bosquejar técnicas y continuó en
los Estados Unidos con la exploración de la fabricación del vidrio. En 1985, regresó
a Colombia, creyó su propio estudio para trabajar con el vidrio y otros medios de
comunicación. Sus dos mentores, Maestro Oviedo y Hernando Tejada, eran muy
prominentes artistas colombianos, ambos se convirtieron en una sólida fuente de
inspiración y estímulo para continuar con su carrera artística.
Rafael Ordoñez Franco was born in Roldanillo, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. His artistic
education was gained through the attendance and study at many creative workshops,
such as Rayo Museum, where he studied under internationally acclaimed artists
Umberto Giangrandi and Gilberto Acevez Navarro. There he developed skills in the
artistic techniques of painting, drawing, engraving, and calligraphy. He has displayed
his work both in solo and group exhibits in a variety of arts institutions in Colombia,
Mexico, and Ecuador including Museo Rayo in Roldanillo, Columbia, Museo Art
Moderno in Cuenca, Equador, and Museo Agora in Fresnillo, Mexico.
Rafael Ordoñez Franco nació en Roldanillo, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Su formación
artística se obtuvo a través de la asistencia y el estudio en muchos talleres creativos,
como Museo Rayo, donde estudió con artistas de renombre internacional Umberto
Giangrandi y Gilberto Acevez Navarro. Allí desarrolló habilidades en las técnicas
artísticas de pintura, dibujo, grabado, y la caligrafía. Ha expuesto su obra tanto en
exposiciones individuales y colectivas en diversas instituciones de arte en Colombia,

Fernando Manrique Martínez was born in Santiago de Cali in 1959. His formal
art education took place at the Instituto de Bellas Artes of Cali between 1980 and
1985. Since then he has participated in numerous collective exhibitions throughout
Colombia, Argentina and Spain, and has also presented individual shows in Colombia,
Peru, Bolivia, and Russia. Through this exhibit, Manrique hopes to help activate “a
fruitful exchange with other Colombian and U.S. based artists, an artistic and cultural
exchange, as well as to present my technique and style.”
Fernando Manrique Martínez nació en Santiago de Cali en 1959. Su educación
artística formal tuvo lugar en el Instituto de Bellas Artes de Cali entre 1980 y 1985.
Desde entonces ha participado en numerosas exposiciones colectivas en Colombia,
Argentina y España, y ha presentado exposiciones individuales en Colombia, Perú,
Bolivia y Rusia. A través de esta exposición, Manrique espera ayudar a activar “un
fructífero intercambio con otros artistas colombianos y con sede en EE.UU., un
intercambio artístico y cultural, así como para presentar mi técnica y estilo.”
