Happy New Year to my fellow Near
Westsiders! I know, it’s February but we’ve
haven’t been in touch yet this year. And,
what does your 2014 look like? I have spent
some time thinking about this and I know
there is some excitement building for our
beloved neighborhood. Like improvements
on our very own West Street!!
¡Feliz año nuevo a mis compañeros del Westside! Lo sé, es febrero, pero no me he
comunicado con ustedes todo este año. Y, ¿cómo se parece el 2014 para usted? He
pasado algún tiempo pensando en esto y sé que hay algo emocionante creciendo en

The buzz in and around so many cities lately
is “shop local, eat local, keep your money
local” and I agree. Whenever possible
I make the choice to do this. We have
treasures right here under our noses and
sometimes we don’t even realize it. I keep
learning about new businesses, new groups,
new services, right here, right on the Near
Westside. So, in 2014 I would like to use this
column to begin to scratch the surface of what is available for you, keeping it local.
And, maybe we can even dream a little about what we would like to see here in our
neighborhood available to us, and the rest of the city. Why not be trendsetters?
Let’s think in terms of everyday needs and wants, looking at our daily
requirements, be it food or services. And after that we can expand to the extras
and niceties that complete our life. So many of these can be acquired right here,
practically at our doorstep.
This is what I want to do this year. Introduce you to what’s readily available, by our
neighbors and friends. So look for information in this column this year. I know quite
a bit about the neighborhood but you probably know as much or more, so please
help me out by sending me an email and here is my address: carolesnwscorner@
gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you and looking into your suggestions.

Labeled as a “primary care center,” St. Joseph’s West places an emphasis on
food and nutrition education for low-income families and individuals, which
comprised more than 75 percent of the center’s patients in 2012. Syracuse’s
West Side is one of the city’s poorest neighborhoods, with a predominantly
working class and refugee demographic that often have Medicare, Medicaid or
no insurance at all, according to a Jan.15 article on Syracuse.com.

Bob Seigart, the partner in charge of the project at Schopfer Architects, said
even if a deal had been struck with their landlord, the building didn’t lend itself
to expansion. Ultimately, the demand for care required a larger facility.

Apart from the smaller size, the previous building lacked “space and support

necessary to properly care for the nearly 9,000 annual patients, Howell said.
“The whole system is (centered) around family care,” added Marylin Galimi,
director of engineering and con-struction at St. Joseph’s. “Pediatrics, behavioral
health and adult services all under the same roof to be able to take care of the
whole family.”

purchasing healthy foods. Eligible patients can enter to win gym memberships,
bikes and other re-wards meant to promote a healthier lifestyle.
“The doctors can prescribe change and I can reward you for changing,” Nojaim
said.

While construction officially began in early 2013, Seigart said Schopfer and St.
Joseph’s had planned to build the family center since the summer of 2011. The

taxes on anyone in the area.

Are you interested in helping to paint a mural on the intersection of Tully Street and
Oswego Street? A number of organizations including 601 Tully, Westside Academy,
Syracuse Parks & Recreation, Syracuse University and others are partnering to plan a
large-scale street mural where 601 Tully, the school and Skiddy Park meet.

Saint Paul, Minnesota residents coined the term “Paint the Pavement” and have
supported a number of local street murals. According to paintthepavement.org,
benefits of these mural projects include: increase in communication between
neighbors, lower crime rates and traffic calming affects.

Tan pronto como llegó a Syracuse, hace más de dos años, Angela Arrey-Wastavino,
una educadora y artista profesional, decidió convertirse en un miembro activo de la

As soon as she arrived in Syracuse more than two years ago, Angela Arrey-Wastavino,
a professional artist and educator, decided to become an active member in the
community and devote her time and energy to empower students.
A month ago, she
started a sustainable art
workshop called “Paper
or Plastic?” the second
in a yearlong project
to promote waste
reduction through
artistic development.
Through Dec. 21, ArreyWastavino will teach
Syracuse teenagers
four times a week at
Near Westside’s SALT
Quarters gallery how to
create sculptures using
recycled materials.
“It’s my favorite area
because I know that
children have very
few opportunities to
participate in activities
that demand other
type of, for example,
materials and visits to
galleries or museums,”
she said.
The initiative, which
was funded through
the New York State
Council on the Arts’
Decentralization
Program, has drawn
students as young as
12 and as old as 19.
Although the overall goal is to educate teenagers in the arts and the importance of
respecting the environment, the workshop serves participants according to their
age and needs. High-school students concentrate more on building their portfolios,
whereas the focus with middle-school students is on developing their visual
sensitivity, Arrey-Wastavino says.
Kalyse, a seventh-grader, and Biddie, a sixth-grader, are two of Arrey-Wastavino’s
youngest students. They began taking lessons with her in the summer, when
they participated in the workshop “P.E.A.C.E. Bringing Peace: Beautifying Our
Neighborhood.” During their first week at “Paper or Plastic?” they built an abstract
sculpture resembling a wasp hive with cardboard and paper cones, which is currently
exhibited at SALT Quarters.

Despite their age, Kalyse and Biddie say they want to pursue an arts education.
“Both of them have characteristics that not many kids have these days; they follow
instructions very carefully, they listen very well, they share their concerns, they
communicate properly, and therefore the results of what they do are exceptionally
good,” Arrey-Wastavino said.

In recent years, Syracuse’s Near West Side has seen a resurgence of interest from
artists, businesses and young urban
tradesmen, all looking for a creative,
palpable environment. The standard
narrative of the neighborhood’s
rejuvenation has featured the repurposing
of industrial infrastructure into facilities
that fit the more modern state of Syracuse
economics. An area that once buzzed with
factory machinery now plays home to
yoga studios, coffee shops, artist studios
and educational facilities.

steadily building their portfolio since.
They’ve already begun recording with

Nestled among Fayette Street’s wall of Dickensian brick facades, the single-story
building is easy to miss. It sits back from the road, halfway between pillars of NWS
rejuvenation like the Gear Factory and the new WCNY building.

The studio’s whereabouts are marked only by a cylindrical yellow sign standing guard
over the building like a 50-gallon water tower. But inside, the studio is an impressive
piece of modern design. The building formerly housed a carpet factory, and the trio
used leftover materials to build pieces of the studio.

The patchwork walls in the recording room are built from more than 100 discarded
warehouse pallets. The heavy double doors that mute any sound were ripped out
of a National Grid building when it underwent a remodeling. The go-betweens used
to isolate a musician’s sound are built from carpet racks left behind by the previous
tenants.

Of course there are cables, instruments and microphones, but even those have a local
connection. Masingale builds many of the mics himself. The drum kit and piano were
donated by Signature Music down the street.

On the ceiling is a curtain track for heavy, sound dampening curtains. It’s shaped like a
dog bone for the stu-dio’s moniker.
On the other side of the glass sits the studio’s piece de resistance: a Wheatstone mixing
board built in Syracuse 25 years ago. It’s situated on a shelf for a model home taken
from National Grid.
“This thing was designed to be bulletproof,” Rothwell says. “That’s why it’s still around.”
Wheatstone is an audio manufacturing company that was located in Syracuse from
1986 to 1991, when it moved to North Carolina. Its products are renowned for being
“overbuilt,” Masingale says. He estimates the board would have cost $250,000 in the
1980s.
The walls of the control room are lined with burlap to deaden the sound. The molding
came from the law offices above the former Wise Guys building downtown.
Moving up in the world
StudioDog began as a home studio out of Rothwell’s basement. For several years he’s
run the studio as a pro-ducer. Masingale and Cappelli record there with their band, The
Goonies, a self-described “Near West Side hip-hop group.”
Rothwell himself grew up on the Near West Side and lives there still. He took an
interest in music thanks to Signature Music. About a year ago, he decided to grow his
studio beyond his home.

“It got too hard to do it at home,” Rothwell said. “I’ve got neighbors.”
In June, the three began the expansion effort. They spent six months bartering and
haggling for the materials needed to turn the worn-down warehouse into a viable audio
recording studio.
In all, they estimate $5,000-$10,000 spent out of pocket. Most of that cost? Things
like nails, concrete and gas for their truck. Nearly every substantial piece of the studio,

New kids on the block
With the addition of Studio Dog, the city’s west side is quickly becoming a hotbed of
local music. Within a half-mile of Studio Dog are two other studios: the elegant Subcat
Studios on West St. and Jeff Moleski’s “world famous” operation, MoleTrax Studio on
Marcellus St. Masingale says Studio Dog falls somewhere between the two.
“Subcat has the whole ‘L.A.’ vibe going on,” Masingale said. “We’re not trying to be
that. We’re a community recording facility.”
Also in the neighborhood is the Gear Factory -- which serves as rehearsal space for
several local bands -- and Signature Music, whose founder, Dick Ford, was a mentor to
Rothwell.
“Dick was a big part of my lifelong love for music and my career,” he says. “And he’s
been a huge advocate of this studio.”
Down the road, the three men have visions of how the studio will fit into the
community. Primarily, they’re planning to hold several block party style concerts in the
modest parking lot once the weather perks up.
“How can we benefit the community and the neighborhood?” Masingale asks. “That’s
what we’re here to figure out.”
